Manchester United legend Lou Macari has called on his former club’s players to stand up in Paul Pogba’s absence.
United have struggled without the Frenchman when he got injured but also when he missed matches due to his suspension.
Pogba picked up a red card in the Red Devils’ win over Arsenal and has missed matches vs Manchester City and Bournemouth.
Without him, Jose Mourinho’s men lost to City and managed to grab a win but put in a lacklustre display vs Bournemouth.
Mourinho has even admitted that he has no one like Paul in his side but Macari believes the club’s other midfielders should step up.
According to Inside Futbol, Lou said: “We shouldn’t have to rely on Paul Pogba, we are Manchester United. He is always going to be missed, but there are enough good players there and they have got to rise to the occasion now.”
When the season started, many pundits hailed Manchester United’s squad depth with Jose seemingly having two reliable options per position.
Since then though, expert opinion has changed and many have called for the Portuguese manager to invest in United’s squad once more.
Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick, Scott McTominay, Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic all represent the club’s senior midfielders at the time.
Carrick is expected to retire at the end of the season while Fellaini’s contract runs out in the summer.
McTominay is still a youngster and learning his trade whilst Herrera has failed to live up to last season’s excellent performances.
Only Pogba and Matic represent reliable options in midfield according to Mourinho’s standards but Macari insists we have the players needed to rotate.
With the Frenchman only having one match left to serve from the sidelines, many will be expecting United to excel once more once he returns.
