Man United legend discusses differences between both Manchester clubs

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has insisted that fierce rivals Manchester City are not the bigger club ahead of the derby on Sunday.

The Red Devils take on the Sky Blues away at the Etihad and whoever wins will not only tilt the title in their favour but will also claim the bragging rights to the city.

The two club’s recent clashes have heated up in recent years, highlighting the gap of quality that used to exist between the pair has slowly diminished.

Sir Alex Ferguson once dubbed them the ‘noisy neighbours’ and after their first title win in the 2011-12 season, most expected City to go on and dominate the league in a similar manner to how United used to.

However, the Citizens have only won the title once since then and have failed to consistently challenge or build on any sort of momentum.

According to Sky Sports, Ryan said: “No. There are more academy players coming through at United than there are at City. United won two trophies last year, and City haven’t won any for a couple of years.

“They are obviously very good, and with the spending power that they have got, every year they get closer, but still United, with the record that they have got, to go with the top manager and the top players, are still on top, but the gap is closing.

“With that spending power, and the coach that they have got, they will be very difficult to stop them over the next couple of years, because they are playing unbelievable football.

“But until you win that trophy, you can’t start comparing them to Arsenal’s Invincibles or other teams who have won the Premier League.”

Manchester United have also struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement after the 2012-13 season, failing to win the title and changing personnel more often than any other time in their history.

David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal both failed to elevate the club to the same levels of the legendary Scotsman but Jose Mourinho’s side are currently challenging for the title.

The appointment of the Portuguese manager has seen the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League arrive at Old Trafford last season.

Van Gaal also managed to land the FA Cup trophy just before losing his seat at Old Trafford so the trophy cabinet hasn’t been entirely empty.
