Marouane Fellaini is set to miss the busy festive period of games for Manchester United to allow him to recover from a recent injury fully.
The Belgian has been suffering from a knee ligament problem since going on international duty in November, and will now be out of action until at least the New Year, according to the Telegraph’s James Ducker.
Fellaini had been in one of the best spells of his Man United career before the blow. He has never been more important than now, and after three seasons of looking like a liability, a mistake waiting to happen, Fellaini has been consistent.
With star man Paul Pogba injured from mid-September until mid-November, Fellaini stepped in. A completely different player, of course, but he did well, enough to earn himself that starting spot ahead of Spaniard Ander Herrera.
Pogba is back, and Nemanja Matic has recovered from a small knock. Fellaini isn’t first choice, but he’s a valuable option to have. That’s particularly true of United are looking to play as they did against Manchester City in a 2-1 defeat, launching the ball forward to be controlled up top.
Fellaini likely would have been used every other game during the Christmas period. United travel to Bristol City in the EFL Cup quarter-final next Wednesday after an away Premier League fixture vs West Brom at the Hawthorns on Sunday.
There’s a third consecutive away game within the space of seven days on Saturday, December 23, against Leicester City.
Jose Mourinho will then have to deal with fixtures on Boxing Day, December 30th and on New Year’s Day.
