Manchester United will place emphasis on securing a ‘magician’ forward during the January transfer window to appease Jose Mourinho’s concerns about a lack of creativity going forward, according to reports.
Mourinho only saw one attacking signing arrive over the summer in the form of Romelu Lukaku, who has only managed one goal in his last 11 appearances.
Strenuous efforts were made to secure the services of Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic, but the Croat ultimately elected to sign a new deal at the San Siro.
And according to M.E.N’s Samuel Luckhurst, the club will place emphasis on signing a ‘magician’ forward to combat the current absence of raw creativity in attack to keep up with Manchester City.
When we say ‘magician’ forward, what do we mean? Not somebody who can cut themselves in half, of course, but rather a player capable of pulling a rabbit out of the hat – in a footballing sense, obviously.
Here is an example from the greatest footballing magician of all time. With Barcelona 1-0 down to Valencia and set to see their lead at the top reduced to just one point, Lionel Messi, with seemingly nothing on, picked up the ball and did this to silence a rocking Mestalla.

Absolute perfection. That ball could not have been better placed or weighted. Barcelona will win La Liga because they have Messi, and only because he feels like it.
And while United have no hopes of securing a player of such extraterrestrial brilliance, the essence of what they need can be seen in that clip – somebody capable of producing the perfect touch at the perfect time whilst under enormous pressure.
Antoine Griezmann, Gareth Bale and Mesut Ozil appear to be the three most obvious options, but where exactly this source of wizardry will come from remains a mystery.
