Manchester United’s players and coaching staff were reportedly involved in a clash with their Manchester City counterparts after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat.
The Reds’ goal was peppered constantly throughout the first half, but Marcus Rashford scored a clinical equaliser just before the break after David Silva had put the visitors in front at Old Trafford.
Nicolas Otamendi scored from another set-piece mishap from Man United to condemn Jose Mourinho’s side to defeat, their first at home since September 2016, also against Man City.
The aftermath, according to the Daily Mail, wasn’t pretty. Mourinho was reportedly hit on the head with a bottle and doused with water having complained about the constant timewasting and petty play from the opposition.
The Portuguese complained as he walked past City’s dressing room on his way to his post-match press conference, only to be confronted by City goalkeeper Ederson.
United’s players, meanwhile, weren’t pleased with how City’s players and staff ‘rubbed their noses in defeat’ in the tunnel. A ‘melee’ ensued, according to the Mail, between more than 20 players and staff between both sides.
It’s been suggested that some players attempted to swing punches at each other with Old Trafford security staff forced to step in and disperse the scrap.
The Mail quote a United insider as saying: “nobody minds celebrating but the lads deemed that excessive.”
More details will surely follow on a throwback to the days of scraps in the tunnel before and after key clashes against Arsenal.
