Gary Neville has slammed a number of decisions from Manchester United on Saturday evening as they threw away a lead against Leicester City.
The former-captain criticised decisions from Jose Mourinho, Chris Smalling and David de Gea as their collective effort allow Harry Maguire to score a 94th-minute equaliser at the King Power Stadium. Neville said he couldn’t believe what he was seeing late on in the game while commentating on Sky Sports.
Smalling picked up an injury in the final 10 minutes, but refused to go down for some minutes before eventually leaving the pitch, only to return and allow Maguire to escape his attentions and score to see United drop points once more.
“You can’t believe it, he cannot believe it. And I have to say, have I just seen what I have just seen?
“It’s an unbelievable cross from Albrighton,” Neville conceded. “But Chris Smalling has just come back onto the pitch into a central defensive position, I cannot believe he’s gone back on in there into a position to pick up the best header of the ball at the back post.
“You see him limping there at the back post with Ashley Young, and it’s incredible,” Neville said, shocked by United throwing away a chance of three points again.
“He had a chance in the first half Maguire, it’s an unbelievable finish to this match. The quality is wonderful from Albrighton, the finish is fantastic.”
Neville obviously believed Smalling should have either stayed off the pitch or gone into an attacking position and allowed someone else to mark Maguire instead of him, unable to move as well as needed to defend properly. Similarly, Mourinho should have instructed Smalling better.
The Sky Sports pundit also questioned David de Gea’s role in the goal.
“You have to question whether De Gea should be out there,” Neville said. “It’s three yards out from goal. But take nothing away from Leicester, a wonderful moment for those fans.”
