Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has hinted at Antoine Griezmann leaving the club to Manchester United in the latest update on this transfer saga.
Griezmann was initially linked to the Red Devils during the summer transfer window, even publicly saying his move would be likely.
However, the Spanish club were soon banned from transfer activities and the Frenchman opted to remain loyal to his employers.
United’s pursuit of Antoine was very much widely advertised and many expected it to be just a matter of time before he switched clubs.
Since then though the rumours have continued to rumble on and Cerezo has add fuel to the fire with his latest comments.
According to Calcio Mercato, Enrique said: “If a player asks me to leave it is because he has better financial options elsewhere.
“I do not know anyone who stays at one company if another company were to arrive and offer to double his salary.”
Manchester United though face stiff competition from Barcelona, despite Atletico Madrid fans unlikely to take the move well.
Although not fierce rivals, Antoine Griezmann would be moving to a direct competitor for the La Liga title.
However, if Cerezo’s comments are anything to go by then the Frenchman would be unable to turn down the higher wages he’d receive at Barcelona.
United should be able to compete with the Spanish club for Griezmann and have the added bonus of having one of his best friends in the footballing world in Paul Pogba.
The pair’s relationship is well documented and it could just give the Red Devils the edge they need with the Barcelona news likely to just be rumours to help Antoine get a better deal.
Jose Mourinho’s side would hardly hold back on offering the versatile attacker whatever wages he desires but the club will still have to work to deliver a player most expect to move to Old Trafford.
