Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas is hoping that the club’s supporters show some respect towards visiting manager Rafa Benitez on Saturday, despite his mixed history with the club, the Evening Standard report.
Saturday’s game will be Benitez first time back at the Bridge since his brief stint as manager at the club, an appointment that was met with backlash from the home supporters.
Benitez joined the club to replace the popular figure of Roberto Di Matteo, who had previously guided the Blues to the Champions League title before losing his job the following season. That, coupled with comments about the club in the past made Benitez an unpopular choice among many supporters.
However, despite being the last Chelsea manager to win a European trophy, he is unlikely to get a warm welcome back to Stamford Bridge in the opposition dugout, something Fabregas is urging his fans against.
When asked about Benitez’s return, the Chelsea midfielder said:
I wasn’t at Chelsea when he was at the club but he is a person who has always worked very hard. I think in the past about players such as Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Petr Cech, Frank Lampard, basically everybody. The supporters have always been respectful to them and it is spot on. Benitez won the Europa League for Chelsea and deserves some credit for that.
Chelsea are looking to carry on their recent good form in the league and will hope to make it seven unbeaten when they take on struggling Newcastle in Saturday’s early kick-off.
