Antonio Conte has claimed that Michy Batshuayi is still getting back his sharpness, while explaining why he has been overlooked recently.
The Belgium international was left on the bench for Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium on Tuesday, with the Italian preferring to lead with Eden Hazard in Álvaro Morata’s absence.
Hazard enjoyed a successful spell in the role, flanked by Willian and Pedro, who both found themselves on the scoresheet.
Despite rampant speculation over Batshuayi’s long-term future, Conte claims that he has been played much more this season, and “is a part of the squad.”
The 24-year old has scored seven goals this season, starting six of his 15 appearances for the Blues. On Batshuayi taking time to reach full match fitness, Conte said;
Don’t forget he played in the Community Shield and we started the season with him. I try to make the best decision for the team.
He was out for three weeks. He had a problem with his ankle. Then he struggled to find the right physical condition. Now he is starting to stay in good form.
Next up for Chelsea is Southampton, who will travel to Stamford Bridge to face the Blues’ on Saturday.
