World Cup winner explains why Jose Mourinho should manage Italy

Former Inter Milan defender Giuseppe Bergomi believes that Jose Mourinho would be an ideal candidate for the Italy job.

The post has been left vacant after manager Giampiero Ventura was sacked following Italy’s first unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign in 60 years.

Mourinho himself has been linked with a move elsewhere in recent weeks amid reports claiming Paris Saint Germain had contacted his agent, Jorge Mendes, over the possibility of installing the Portuguese as a replacement for Unai Emery next summer.

And Bergomi, who won the World Cup with Italy in 1986, told Tutti Convocati de Radio 24 that Mourinho would be the perfect man to resurrect the Azzurri in preparation for the 2020 European Championships.

“Italian football needs a deep reconstruction. I ask myself if we are still a great football power or not,” he said.

“In terms of the coach, I think Mourinho would be the correct choice. He might seem like someone who provokes, but some would say the same about Roberto Mancini.

“In the short term the best thing to do would be to pick an important coach, who can take on two roles.”

You may think that the meticulous, necessarily pragmatic planning that needs to go into every training session and game would appeal to Mourinho.

International football is not about building; no manager has enough time to imprint his identity in any meaningful sense. Success or failure is essentially dictated by how well you can prepare a group of players in a limited space of time.

And perhaps this type of management would indeed appeal to Mourinho. And yet, for now at least, you sense there is absolutely no chance of the Portuguese leaving the week-by-week chaos and intensity of club football. The press conference room, the pitch, the training ground – the general smell and feel of constantly battling at the very top – is where Mourinho feels most comfortable, and that won’t change for some time.

Either way, it appears as if Carlo Ancelotti, who has already been given an interview for the job, will take the reigns for Italy just two months after being sacked by Bayern Munich.
