Arsenal to Match 21-Year-Old Streak If They Fail to Beat Tottenham in North London Derby
Arsenal will play host to Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday’s early kick-off hoping a win at the
Emirates Stadium will pull them within a point of their north London derby opponents.
Arsene Wenger’s side have seen the north London power balance shift gradually in favour of
Tottenham over recent years, and after failing to beat their greatest rivals in their last three
meetings at the Emirates, Arsenal are at risk of reviving an undesirable streak.
A 3-1 defeat at Manchester City before the international break left the Gunners stranded in sixth,
level on points with Liverpool after 11 matches, while Spurs are matched with Manchester United
in their hope to hound down leaders City.
Wenger’s men are under far greater pressure to snatch a result on home soil, and failure to win
would see the Gunners match a winless run they haven’t mustered in more than 20 years.
That’s because it was back in 1996 that Arsenal last failed to beat Tottenham in four successive
home matches. In four matches between May 1993 and April 1996—back when Highbury was still
the Gunners’ home—the Gunners lost once before drawing their next three clashes.
It was in that 1993 encounter that Teddy Sheringham set Spurs on their way before a John Hendry
double helped complete a famous victory, not to mention Tottenham’s biggest win at Arsenal
Manager Mauricio Pochettino now sits at the helm and will be wary of the fact Spurs have only
beaten the Gunners on their own turf once since then, in 2010 when a late Younes Kaboul winner
stole all three points for the visitors.
But Arsenal have been imperious at the Emirates of late and have won their last 10 Premier
League matches at home, not to mention they’ve scored at least twice in their last eight games at
However, Tottenham are a team on the tear at the moment and have won five of their last six
league matches, not to mention defeating Real Madrid 3-1 in the Champions League group stage.
Arsenal may be in sight of pulling level with a winless derby streak they’d rather steer clear of, but
leadership is needed in fixtures such as this if Wenger’s men are to revive their spot as title
contenders.
