There weren’t too many positives for Arsenal fans from the Europa League match with FC Köln on Thursday evening.
The Gunners put in a poor performance in a poor match which they ultimately lost 1-0 to a contentious penalty.
The good news was that other results meant that Arsene Wenger’s men secured top spot in Group H but that wasn’t the only positive.
Danny Welbeck made his first start for the Gunners since his return from injury but there was some worry about the player’s fitness when the Englishman was brought off at half-time. Now, Arsene Wenger has explained his decision.
“It was planned before the game that he would only play 45 minutes,” Wenger said after the match.
“He has only just come back from injury, and we have three more games on Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday again. Medically, the risk was a bit too high to play him for longer because he has been out for a while.
“He has no problem. Of course, he was ready to stay on and frustrated to come off, but he’s in good shape.”
It was good to see Danny Welbeck back out on the pitch and it’s a relief that his substitution was pre-planned and not the result of another injury.
