Victor Lindelof has revealed that he is quickly developing as a player under Jose Mourinho, labelling the Portuguese as the best coach in the world.
The Swede arrived at the club back in June for a fee of £31m and suffered a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, picking up widespread criticism for his horror show against Huddersfield Town.
But he has made important progress in recent weeks, starring for Sweden as they reached the World Cup at the expense of Italy and making his first Premier League start of the season against Newcastle United.
And Lindelof, in an interview with United Review, was quick to stress that he was learning plenty from Mourinho at Carrington.
“He’s a very good coach, in my opinion the best in the world, and for me to be able to work with him is a pleasure,” he said.
“All of the staff and coaches as well, they are great and I am learning a lot from them. I’m just trying to do my best to work hard every day and listen to them because they know a lot about football, so it’s about listening and learning.”
United supporters will always have high standards for new players and there is nothing wrong with that. Expecting the very best is an integral aspect of the club’s philosophy, after all.
But we can also be guilty of having slightly short memories. Only managing one Premier League start by late November can appear tantamount with not being adequate at first, until you realise that the likes of Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Laurent Blanc amongst others hardly looked the part during their first few months at the club as well.
The arc of history is long, as they say, and Mourinho’s record with defenders at previous clubs suggests that we should be confident in this latest investment eventually bearing fruit.
