Andreas Pereira has revealed that he joined Valencia on loan this season in order to receive more minutes on the pitch.
The Brazilian, having enjoyed a strong loan spell at Granada, elected to remain in La Liga for another season – a decision disputed by Jose Mourinho – and joined up with manager Marcelino on deadline day.
And he has enjoyed a superb start for Los Che, making ten appearances so far this season and claiming three assists.
Speaking to ESPN earlier this week, Pereira was quick note that joining Valencia was the best thing for his career at this moment in time.
“I wasn’t going to be a starting player at United this season,” he said. “I felt that by coming here I would play more minutes. By playing I’ll get better, I’ll evolve. That is better than being on the bench where I get frustrated and it starts to work against me.”
“Here, I’m playing, I’m happy and I’m getting better. People see that, United see that, and it will help me, Valencia and Manchester United.
“If I go back then I’ll be a better player. I’m under pressure here, but in a positive way. I play against big teams in big stadiums. We’re second in the league.”
As time ticks on, with Valencia continuing their inexorable march in La Liga, the likelihood of Pereira moving back to the Premier League is quickly diminishing.
Just imagine, after all, what Pereira would be doing this weekend if he had remained in Manchester: possibly a place on the bench against Brighton but more likely featuring for the reserves, playing in front of a few hundred people, in the freezing northern rain.
In Spain, however, he finds himself preparing for a top of the table clash against Barcelona in front of 55,000 people, playing for a side teeming with attacking fervour and desire.
And why, I ask, would Pereira ever want to abandon such a golden opportunity to assert himself on the biggest stages in place of further anonymity at Old Trafford?
