Henrikh Mkhitaryan is being played out of position by Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, Tim Sherwood has claimed.
The BT Sport pundit, formerly manager of Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, was discussing the Armenian after he was dropped for a third consecutive game.
Mourinho publicly slated Mkhitaryan’s recent performances ahead of Saturday afternoon’s victory against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Mkhitaryan came on as a second-half substitute.
“He’s being asked to play a role he’s not accustomed to. He needs to play as a No.10,” Sherwood said on BT Sport Score.
“If he was in Man City’s team he would open up teams week in, week out.”
Mkhitaryan has been played at number 10 more times than on the right flank this season.
Last season, certainly, the Armenian was constantly shunted onto the right flank.
Even when he played there, though, Mkhitaryan drifted in with frequency. Sherwood’s claim is an odd one, but Mkhitaryan has been severely out of form.
Mourinho said in midweek that he had given the 28-year-old too many chances, claiming he had been poor for five or six games before he dropped him for Anthony Martial in United’s starting line-up.
Mkhitaryan was hardly fantastic after replacing Martial in the 71st-minute, steaming down the right flank at one point before a poor touch took the chance away from him when he should have crossed to Romelu Lukaku.
More is needed from him, because based on current form, he’d be nowhere near Manchester City’s side, as Sherwood claims.
