David de Gea 6 – Had very little to do aside from gather a couple of tame first half drives. Distributed the ball nicely.
Antonio Valencia 6 – Didn’t let the visitors make any headway down his flank, mopping up any counter-attacks well, but failed to exercise much influence going forward.
Victor Lindelof 7 – An accomplished performance from the Swede: manipulated the ball with composure and looked lively across the turf, producing an excellent tackle on Anthony Knockaert to stop a potentially dangerous break in the second half.
Chris Smalling 5 – Looked unhinged by Glenn Murray’s physical presence at times and lacked a measure of urgency at times.
Ashley Young 7 – It was fitting that the Englishman was the man who broke the deadlock in the second period. Bombed forward with precision and intent on the left hand side all evening, firing a litany of dangerous crosses into the box and linking up well with players further forward.
Nemanja Matic 5 – The Serbian was due a bad day at some point. Failed to offer any impetus going forward and looked stagnant on the ball for large parts of the game.
Paul Pogba 6 – Displayed his usual intent and innovation on the ball, always looking to pick out teammates further forward, but struggled to break Brighton down in the second half. Supporters will be pleased to see him complete 90 minutes.
Juan Mata 5 – A muted display from the Spaniard. Couldn’t take up any dangerous positions in behind Brighton’s midfield and it meant Jose Mourinho’s men couldn’t string together many clear cut attacking moves. Hooked off after an hour.
Anthony Martial 6 – Produced some dangerous crosses in the first half and moved the ball around accurately, only to flag slightly as the game went on.
Marcus Rashford 7 – Another bustling, fearsome display out wide from the youngster. Took Brighton’s back four on with hunger and stretched them more than any other player.
Romelu Lukaku 5 – Battled hard all afternoon, striving for every loose ball and inch of space, but his movement and lack of presence in the box is becoming a concern.
Substitutes
Zlatan Ibrahimovic 7 – His entry on the hour mark engendered a shift in mood around Old Trafford. Brought innovation, intent, and a touch of swagger to the encounter.
