Arsene Wenger has refused to rule out the prospect of Mesut Ozil leaving Arsenal in January amid rumours of a potential move to Manchester United.
Negotiations between Arsenal and the German over a new contract haven’t progressed since March, prompting speculation of a move away at the end of the campaign.
Jose Mourinho, who developed a good relationship with Ozil at Real Madrid, is thought to be open to signing the playmaker on a free once his contract expires.
But Wenger, when asked about Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, recently admitted that the pair could leave mid-way through the campaign.
“No decision has been made on that front,” he said.
“Do we let anyone go in January? We’ll have to think about that to see where we stand with them at the end of December.”
If you decided to spend your Tuesday night watching Jake Livermore scythe Brazilian players to the ground then I feel sorry for you.
Not only because you actually put yourself through 90 minutes of England playing football, but also because, over in Germany, there was a tantalising contest with France unfolding during which Ozil was a delight to watch.
When you place him in the right system and make him feel wanted, the results can be salutary. The precision and timing with which he releases passes all over the pitch is mesmerising – something you would specifically pay to see in its own right.
And, needless to say, he needs a change at club level. The mood at Arsenal feels too abrasive, too toxic, and too groundhog day for Ozil to truly thrive in the middle.
Surely Mourinho, currently struggling for creative zeal at No.10, will at least be contemplating a way to accommodate him at Old Trafford next season.
