Manchester United will open contract talks with Jose Mourinho in January amid rumoured interest from Paris Saint Germain, according to reports.
The 54-year-old’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has been reportedly contacted by the French giants over the possibility of taking the reigns from Unai Emery in the summer.
Mourinho, in turn, reiterated his commitment to honouring his three year contract at Old Trafford, but reports have continued to prompt speculation of a potential move.
But according to the Daily Record‘s David McDonnell, the club will respond to Mourinho’s demand for greater backing in the transfer market amid interest from PSG by opening contract talks in January with a view to offer the Portuguese a package that reflects the progress made over the last year and enables him to compete with Manchester City in the transfer market.
The length of Mourinho’s contract is not a primary matter of concern here. His deal can easily stretch to four years and, well, you find it hard to imagine him staying for any longer than that.
At stake here, therefore, is what level of backing and freedom will Mourinho receive to build the team he wants, and perhaps even reassurances that what happened with Ivan Perisic – a target deemed vital to his plans but one that the club couldn’t secure – doesn’t repeat itself in the summer.
