Manchester United’s Spanish midfielder Juan Mata has admitted that he’d love to stay and finish his career at Old Trafford.
The talented attacking midfielder has been with the Red Devils for a couple of seasons now, since David Moyes’ ill-fated reign in particular and has become a core part of the squad.
Moyes initially spent big on Mata in the hopes that the former Chelsea man would rescue his career at the club.
Since then though, Juan has proven his versatility in the attacking third, playing in behind the striker and the right wing successfully.
Louis Van Gaal was the manager who shifted him out wide but he still managed to put in decent performances, cutting inside and playmaking as always.
Speaking to ESPN, Mata said when asked if he’d like to finish his career at Old Trafford: “Why not? I’m 29 and hopefully I can play football for some more years.
“It would be great to play until I’m 40 like Ryan Giggs. But that’s still a bit far, still 11 years.
“I’m happy here. The club is massive, the support we have is massive. I’ve been settled down in the city since year one. Now it’s my fourth year in Manchester.
“You never know what can happen in football and in life. But my feeling now is that I’m happy here and I wouldn’t have any problem continuing here for more time.”
There were huge concerns that Jose Mourinho’s arrival at the club would spell the end of Juan’s United career but the Portuguese manager has squeezed the player into his plans.
Impressing in Mourinho’s first season in charge, he has since dipped in form and has hardly done much to shout about this year.
Often a focal point of the Red Devils’ attacks, Mata has been more of a bystander than an active contributor these past few games.
His performances have been even more disappointing given Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s own dip in form with United looking awfully short of any flair in the attacking third of the pitch.
Although Juan has been safe so far, one question’s whether Jose would stand for such passive performances and the Spaniard will have to pick up his displays if he wishes to remain at the club.
