Manchester United are prepared to let Marouane Fellaini leave for free next summer as negotiations over a new contract continue to drag on, according to reports.
The Belgian was linked with a move to Turkey during the transfer window but Jose Mourinho made it clear that he wasn’t prepared to let him leave.
However, his future at Old Trafford hangs in the balance after he rejected an initial contract offer tabled by the club in September.
And according to the BBC‘s Simon Stone, Man United are prepared to let him leave for free in the summer rather than see him depart in January.
Fellaini hasn’t rejected a new contract at United per se. The Belgian could still commit his long term future to the club on the condition that they meet – or eclipse – the terms proposed by any other potential suitors, which seemingly hasn’t happened yet.
Either way, seeing the Belgian leave wouldn’t be a surprise, even if Mourinho deems him to be a valuable member of the squad. His next contract will definitely be his last big one and he may, after five seasons at Old Trafford, desire a new challenge.
And Mourinho appears to be preparing for this eventuality: reported interest in Carlos Soler, Leon Goretzka, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Leander Dendoncker suggests that the Portuguese will look to inject some youthful zeal into his side’s midfield next summer.
