RB Leipzig currently lead the race to sign Benfica starlet and Manchester United target Umaro Embalo, with the Bundesliga side prepared to table £11.6m for his services, according to reports.
Portuguese media outlet Record claimed last week that Man United had reached an agreement with Benfica to sign the 16-year-old.
But his agent later confirmed that, while contact between the two clubs had been made, there was no deal in place for Embalo.
And according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Leipzig have overtaken United in the race to sign the youngster after preparing a £11.6m bid.
You would think that shelling out north of £10m for a 16-year-old with no first team experience is strange, but the fine line between ambitious business and absurdity has all but vanished over the next year or so.
Leipzig would tell you that this bid constitutes the former: Embalo is, after all, a player pursued by several big clubs and has impressed with his performances in the UEFA Youth League this season, displaying a superb low centre of gravity and capacity to take on opponents.
We may have to get used to his name over the next few years, but whether United will be prepared to match Leipzig’s bid remains to be seen.
