Phil Jones is confident of recovering from an injury sustained over the international break in time to face Newcastle United on Saturday, according to reports.
The defender, with his leg strapped up, started for England against Germany last week but only managed 25 minutes before coming off, prompting Manchester United fans into something of a fury.
Gareth Southgate admitted after the game that Jones was still carrying a calf problem that forced him off against Huddersfield Town last month.
But according to the Guardian‘s Jamie Jackson, tests with the club’s medical staff on Monday has left Jones feeling optimistic of facing Newcastle over the weekend.
News of this latest injury not being serious is good news, of course, but we should perhaps take cautious note of the fact that Jones, in one way or another, always seems to be carrying some sort of knock.
This is generally the case with footballers at the highest level and especially defenders of Jones’ forthright nature, yet with the Englishman it feels worryingly prevalent.
Perhaps Mourinho, to avoid this vicious cycle from propagating itself, needs to tone down the number of minutes he gives the defender over a particular period of time, starting with giving Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling – both of whom didn’t feature during the international break – the nod for Saturday’s contest.
