Conte ready to help national team managers after Drinkwater criticism

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte has leapt to the defence of midfielder Danny Drinkwater, who rejected the chance to feature in the England squad last week.

As reported by the Independent, Conte admits that the issue was not as big as it was made out to be.

He was injured and also he wasn’t really 100 per cent fit to go with the national team. If someone asks me I can explain and if the coach wants to take the same decision it is ok but it is important to have more relationship between the coach and the coach of the national team but it was the same for us with Eden Hazard and then I spoke with Roberto Martinez (Belgium coach) and then he played yes.

Drinkwater, who has been struggling with injuries since the start the of the season, has barely featured for Chelsea following his deadline day move from Leicester.

Gareth Southgate turned to Drinkwater after several first-choice players dropped out of the squad with their respective injuries, however, the midfielder turned down the chance to focus on his own recovery.

Conte says that he would like to help the national team managers when it comes to selecting Chelsea players because he knows the difficulties they can face from his own experiences in Italy.

I am ready to help every single national team coach because I had this fantastic experience and I understand very well the problems and I am more open than before when I was the coach of Juventus but sometimes there isn’t the communication.

It’s a pity that a player had to pay for this misunderstanding. Drinkwater was very honest and he doesn’t deserve to be attacked because he was very honest. In this situation every single player wants to go with the national team. We have to appreciate his behaviour and commitment.
