Arsenal legend explains why Mesut Ozil will join Man United

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has noted that Mesut Ozil would “light the place up” if he joined Manchester United over the summer.

The German’s future at the Emirates hangs in the balance: talks over a new contract haven’t progressed since March, and reports have suggested that Jose Mourinho is keen on working with him again.

Ozil himself has publicly stated that he was currently focused on his endeavours at Arsenal but manager Arsene Wenger refused to rule out the prospect of him leaving for free next summer.

And Wright, speaking on Sky Sports, claimed that the 29-year-old would benefit from reuniting with Mourinho.

“If Ozil goes somewhere like Manchester United with the players they’ve got on form he will light the place up,” he said.

“He’s not the player who when the team’s playing badly – if you’ve got players playing poorly in front of Ozil he’s got nothing to hit.

“And I don’t think Arsene Wenger has got the best out of him consistently up to this point.”

If last weekend’s North London derby taught us anything, it is this: that those who cannot appreciate Ozil cannot fully appreciate the beautiful game itself.

He was nothing short of mesmerising, skimming across the pristine turf in almost regal fashion, nullifying the power and speed of Spurs with pure genius. Watching raw talent prevail over graft was a wonderful nod in the direction of the artistic potential of this game we love.

And yet, at the same time, the whole thing was somewhat upsetting to watch: Ozil rarely receives the right conditions around him in order to produce performances like that on a regular basis at Arsenal, and you cannot help but wonder whether Mourinho – the man who oversaw the best spell of the playmaker’s career – could offer a preferable alternative at Old Trafford next season.
