The fortress of Old Trafford has fallen down many times this season across all competitions.
The loss against Arsenal, a limp one at that, was just another game added to a list of home losses that have continued to erode the aura around the once-imposing stadium.
However, such has been the Glazers’ apathy towards this historical landmark, the scenes after the game were much more embarrassing than the score during it.
The infamous “leaky roof” finally surrendered to the thunderous rain of Manchester, with sections of Sir Bobby Charlton Stand getting soaked.
The water even came through into the away dressing room, perhaps symbolic of the rot that has set in at the club under the Glazers.
Now, BBC Sports’ Simon Stone reports that United have launched a priority cleanup mission to get the ground ready in quick time.
United host Newcastle on Wednesday and everything is being done to make the affected sites of the stadium usable for that game. Stadium is drying out but mopping up is also taking place at a rapid rate.
The cleanup operation is also symbolic of the Glazers’ reign on the pitch, where they would rather keep sticking short-term plasters on wounds instead of investigating and fixing the cause of the problem.
The roof at Old Trafford has been a problem for decades and it is just one of the many issues with the ground.
It is why Sir Jim Ratcliffe made it his mission to prioritise the development/relocation of the stadium as soon as his stake was confirmed.
That is not something that can be done overnight but at least the stadium is deserving the attention is deserves.
In the meantime, mopping up the Glazer-created mess to get ready for another game in two days will have to do. Fans will just hope players put in the same effort as the workers are putting in readying the stadium for the game!
