United at serious risk of missing out on highly sought-after manager as PL rivals close in on his signing - report

Manchester United are at risk of missing out on one of football’s most-coveted coaches to bitter rivals Liverpool – Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim.

Pressure is mounting on Erik ten Hag following a very underwhelming season from United.

The Red Devils suffered their 12th defeat of the Premier League season on Thursday night at the hands of Chelsea in heartbreaking style.

Ten Hag’s men had a 3-2 lead with 99 minutes and 17 seconds gone, before conceding two Cole Palmer goals in the 100th and 101st minutes. It was the latest a side has ever led in a Premier League match and gone on to lose the match.

Even more worrying for United is that it was the second time in less than a week that the club lost a lead in added time following their 1-1 draw against Brentford last weekend at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The defeat at the hands of the Blues was United’s 17th of the campaign across all competitions – the most since the 1989/90 season. As it stands, finishing within the top four places seems to be an incredibly, almost impossible task to achieve.

Following the club’s humiliating exits from the Champions League and the Carabao Cup earlier in the season, the FA Cup represents United’s only hope of lifting some silverware and restoring some of the pride that has already been lost.

It has been suggested that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS could make a managerial change as they seek to start the new era on a clean slate.

Already, United have been linked to managers like Gareth Southgate, Julian Nagelsmann, Zinedine Zidane, Graham Potter, Thomas Frank, Carlo Ancelotti, Gary O’Neil and of course Amorim.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the 20-time English champions are likely to find it very difficult to lure Amorim to Old Trafford as he is the leading candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Klopp is set to step down as boss of the Merseysiders at the end of the season and  Liverpool are believed to have identified Amorim as the best person to occupy the Anfield dugout.

La Liga giants Barcelona also retain an interest in the Sporting Lisbon gaffer but it seems that Liverpool are in pole position to secure his services.

This is pointed out by Foot Mercato (via Fichajes) who explain that United’s old foes have already opened talks with Amorim as they seek to pip all other rivals to his signature.

The speed at which Liverpool are moving to land the 39-year-old coach poses a real danger to Ratcliffe and INEOS, who may find themselves losing out on one of the best tacticians around.

Each day that elapses without the United bosses reaching a decisive verdict on Ten Hag’s future provides teams such as Liverpool with additional opportunities to secure Amorim and other top-tier coaches, potentially leaving INEOS with less desirable alternatives.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Sporting’s crucial top-of-the-table match against Benfica on Saturday, Amorim was asked about the rumours claiming he could be on his way to England.

He was questioned on whether he would follow Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso by confirming he would stay. He replied, “I can not guarantee that I will stay at Sporting next season. I can’t say that like Xabi Alonso did. We have time to discuss my future, we will do that at the right time. Now to focus on winning titles and then we will see what happens.”

He went on to state that his “future has been planned” for some time now and both he and Sporting will make a decision once they’ve achieved all their objectives for the season.
