"The missing piece": Ratcliffe pushing hard for spellbinding Serie A star to complete "world-class attack" - report

Manchester United co-owner and INEOS boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe has identified Rafael Leao as the winger that the club needs in order to build a “world-class front line” this summer.

As has been the case during previous seasons, the media has linked United with a growing array of attacking options for the upcoming transfer window.

From the likes of Ivan Toney to Jonathan David, the abundance of strikers reported to be targeted by the club makes sense given the current predicament at Old Trafford.

With Anthony Martial believed to be set to leave the club at the end of the season once his contract expires, Monaco and Marseille are both believed to be looking to swoop him up.

Should this scenario indeed become a reality, then United would be in short supply of forwards, solely relying on Rasmus Hojlund, who himself only arrived at the club this past summer.

Still, the striker position is not the only one where United need reinforcements. Both Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood appear unlikely to play for the club again, meaning yet another winger may be required.

Instead of signing two players this summer, one in each position, there are some versatile attackers with the ability to play effectively in both positions, thus solving both problems simultaneously; such as Rafael Leao.

TEAMtalk relayed reports from Spain suggesting Ratcliffe is interested in signing the AC Milan attacker this summer. The report alleges United view Leao as the “missing piece” in their attack who can help to create a “world-class” front line.

Back in October, The Peoples Person covered a report indicating United have been monitoring Leao, following an impressive previous season, in which he scored 16 goals and bagged 15 assists.

This season appears to be no different, with the Portuguese star scoring six goals and contributing eight assists in 27 Serie A matches. He scored two goals in two Coppa Italia appearances, while providing an impressive three goals and two assists in just four Europa League matches (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, signing Leao could prove to be a major challenge for United, with the player signing a new contract with Milan earlier in the season – a sign of his satisfaction at the Italian club.

Ratcliffe may have to put together a lucrative offer in order to lure Leao to Old Trafford in the summer. Still, with FFP issues rearing their head, it remains uncertain as to how United will approach the summer window.
