Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday was another classic example as to why manager Erik ten Hag’s flawed high-transition style does not work.
His current squad lacks pace in defence and in midfield but that has not stopped the Dutchman from asking all his forwards and midfielders to push high up while the defenders sit deep.
This has led to the opposition having a field day with all the space in the world available for counter-attacks with Liverpool having 28 shots as compared to the Red Devils’ nine.
The 20-time English league champions have conceded 308 shots in their last 14 games and it is clear that this style is unsustainable.
Casemiro not the best fit
And Casemiro has struggled to stop this onslaught on his own with the Brazilian looking like he has lost a yard of pace and is not a fit for this system unlike last season when the club tried to play a possession-based style.
The former Real Madrid superstar often indulges in silly last-ditch tackles which completely takes him out of the equation and something that the coaches have failed to iron out from his system.
Não entendi algumas críticas pesadas ao Casemiro por ontem. O problema defensivo do Manchester United é estrutural. E por melhor e mais animador que o Mainoo seja, ele ainda deixa muito espaço e tem uma leitura naturalmente (18 anos) por vezes falha do jogo.

Due to Sofyan Amrabat’s disastrous loan season, Ten Hag has had to keep relying on the 32-year-old but TNT Sports journalist Fred Caldeira has come out fighting in Casemiro’s defence.
The journalist claimed that more than the five-time Champions League winner, it is Ten Hag’s fault for United’s defensive problem this season.
He even went on to blame Kobbie Mainoo for leaving too much space in the middle which Casemiro alone cannot cover.
EtH’s system to blame
“I didn’t understand some of the heavy criticism of Casemiro yesterday. Manchester United’s defensive problem is structural.
“And as good and exciting as Mainoo is, he still leaves a lot of space and has a naturally (18 years old) sometimes flawed reading of the game,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Ten Hag’s system deserves brickbats but Casemiro is past his prime and injuries have also affected his pace and a parting of ways is the best course of action at this stage.
INEOS are reportedly not too impressed with the club for paying over the odds for such a short-term fix and they will look to recoup as much money as possible with Saudi Arabian clubs circling.
