“Nowhere near right”: Former United star says 26-yo is “very fortunate” to be in the starting XI

Former Manchester United full back, Paul Parker, has claimed that Marcus Rashford would be lucky to be a substitute for England in Euro 2024.

The United striker has endured an incredibly tough season to date, where he has only found the back of the net five times for his club.

The player’s form has been lambasted by pundits and fans alike and the player is reportedly not even on speaking terms with his boss, Erik ten Hag, after his 12-hour drinking binge in Belfast.

Speaking to Gambling.com, Paul Parker gave his thoughts on Rashford’s potential role for England at the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament in France.

“At best, he [Rashford] could be a sub,” Parker said.

“He hasn’t got a right to start a game of football for his country. It would be absolutely ridiculous if it was to happen”.

“You can’t pick someone who is not right at the tournament, who is nowhere near right. At the moment, he’s very fortunate he’s playing for his club”.

The United academy product has already been warned by pundits that his poor form may result in having little role for England in the future.

Parker’s former teammate at Old Trafford, Paul Ince, has claimed that the attacker needs to mature if he wants to be a significant part of his national team’s assault on the Euros.

Elaborating further on Rashford’s issues with the English team, the former defender stated that not only his form but also the intense competition due to the quality in the England squad was an obstacle to a meaningful contribution this summer.

“He shouldn’t be starting for his country at the moment. Especially given the players that are around, he should be worried if he’s going to make the squad,” he said.

Rashford not being in good enough form for an England call-up is one thing. Parker’s claim that “he’s very fortunate” to be playing for United is another.

Many United fans would attest to the fact he is only in the team due to the lack of options out wide, as only Alejandro Garnacho has impressed this season.

It would certainly benefit both his club and national team if the 26 year old could somehow rekindle something of the form he showed last season as he broke the 30 goal barrier for the first time in his career.

"That's small change": Ex-United star urges Ratcliffe to speedily pay up for "key cog" who'll transform the club

Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Tim Howard has encouraged his former club to stop dithering and just pay up the money to Newcastle for the services of Dan Ashworth.

Ashworth is INEOS’ number one target to assume a maiden sporting director role at United.

However, Newcastle have so far proven stubborn in their resolve to let the 52-year-old fulfill his wish of joining the Red Devils for a fresh challenge.

When Ashworth asked his bosses at St James’ Park to let him leave, the Magpies responded by placing him on immediate gardening leave.

In a subsequent interview, new United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe branded Newcaste’s behaviour as “stupid”, “silly” and “absurd”.

Eddie Howe’s side are understood to want a hefty compensation package worth around £20million to let their executive formally switch allegiances.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person noted that Newcastle seem to have had a change of heart and are now open to agreeing a compromise that is favourable for all concerned parties.

Should the Tyneside outfit stick to their guns, the earliest Ashworth can start work at Old Trafford is in the 2026 January transfer window.

According to Tim Howard who wrote for The Daily Mail, United should treat the Ashworth situation like they would a player transfer and just fork out the money needed to finally land him.

Howard, who is also the sporting director of Memphis 901, emphasised the importance of the role within clubs. He explained that sporting directors fundamentally decide the club’s identity, approach in the transfer market, how money is spent on improving the team and training facilities and also handling vital player and staff affairs.

The former goalkeeper noted that when he first got to United in 2003, he quickly realised that the players were very well taken care of – almost to the point of being “pampered” – so that their sole focus remained on football and performing on the pitch.

Howard encouraged United to replicate this extremely successful model that worked wonders during Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure.

He wrote, “Back then, it was seamless. But United has not got that right for a while. Instead, the club has just papered over the cracks: bring in a new manager, bring in new players. But that wasn’t the issue: it was at the top. Which is why it would be such a coup if United hires Dan Ashworth.”

“He has had success elsewhere – it was on Ashworth’s watch that Brighton unearthed gems such as Moises Caicedo, Leandro Trossard and Kaoru Mitoma. And then, with a big budget at Newcastle, he found the likes of Alexander Isak and Sven Botman.”

“Sure, he won’t be able to sprinkle fairy dust around Old Trafford and fix everything. But the sporting director has always been the key cog – particularly at Manchester United.”

“So if Newcastle want £20million to let him go, that is small change. Instead of spending £100m on a striker, when he plays in a dysfunctional team, I’d rather pay £20m for a guy who can create an ethos and a holistic way of running the club.”

Howard added, “Don’t pay it, and United will still be in the same position – getting played off the park by Luton and losing at home to Fulham. Appoint Ashworth, give him the support he needs, and I have no doubt that United will be back – in a very short period of time.”

The 44-year-old opined that the 20-time English champions have it within themselves to challenge for top honours and silverware in two or three years, but only with the right and proper structure.

As per Howard, the first item on Ashworth’s agenda once he arrives at the club should be changing the environment.

“You are tasked with bringing the right players in. That means sorting contracts, scouting at games or on tape. It’s also on the sporting director to streamline the operation: are the current crop his style of players? Some will have to be pushed out of the door as Sir Jim Ratcliffe tries to raise $130m with a summer clearout. And is Erik ten Hag his manager?”

“Those are the big questions. But a lot of your time is spent almost babysitting – making sure that everybody is manageable and everybody feels like things are moving in the right direction.”

Howard stated that while the spotlight will undoubtedly be on Ashworth, he possesses a huge advantage that will prove invaluable in the discharge of his duties under INEOS – United are a big and historic club that naturally draws people in without much convincing.

Ratcliffe tells reporters “no topic” is “off-limits” in huge culture change from guarded Glazers

Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly informed journalists that under his regime, the club would communicate better, be transparent and no issue would be rendered off limits.

Earlier this month, United confirmed via a public statement that Ratcliffe completed his partial investment into the club.

As a result, he is now a minority co-owner of the Red Devils. It’s thought that Ratcliffe has already assumed full control of sporting operations at Old Trafford, which he intends to subject to a radical overhaul.

After the appointment of Omar Berrada, the next item on the agenda for INEOS is the recruitment of more key personnel to occupy crucial positions that will then comprise the new and improved structure.

The likes of Dan Ashworth, Julian Ward and Jason Wilcox are some of the candidates being considered to spearhead Ratcliffe’s vision to transform United and restore the club to its past glories.

Following the announcement that his deal with the Glazers was over the line, Ratcliffe granted an interview to members of the press.

In the interview, the Oldham-born billionaire outlined his ambitions and future plans for the 20-time English champions.

He also spoke about other contentious issues such as Mason Greenwood, nation-backed states in the Premier League and United’s FFP struggles, just to mention a few topics.

In the eyes of most supporters, Ratcliffe’s openness and candid nature were a breath of fresh air.

Since their leveraged buyout of United in 2005, supporters grew accustomed to the Glazers barely communicating with them.

The American family are notorious within the fanbase for staying silent and constantly failing to address supporters’ concerns and grievances. They have a bad reputation for keeping their cards close to their chests, often for their own selfish reasons and at the expense of United’s progress and development.

The Glazers have proved dismissive of the plight of the Old Trafford faithful who have remained loyal and unwavering in their commitment to the team despite years of underperformance and mediocrity.

It has therefore been a different and freeing experience that Ratcliffe has so far demonstrated an eagerness to communicate with supporters and even take their opinions into account. After all, he is also a self-confessed boyhood United fan.

According to The Athletic, the 71-year-old British businessman has made it his mission for United to be frank, honest and not shy to take things head on.

The newspaper relays, “The 71-year-old billionaire was introducing himself to United fans via the media and told journalists that no topic was off limits.”

“He aims to run United’s football operations through plain speaking — as evidenced by his private addresses to staff, fans, and players — and communicating in a way the Glazers never did.”

“So, he did not want to dodge the Greenwood issue, however delicate.”

The early signs of Ratcliffe’s era are certainly very promising.

Mason Greenwood “has no great desire to play for” Man United again - The Athletic

Mason Greenwood would reportedly think twice about re-joining Manchester United even if the club were to offer him a means of coming back.

Greenwood was controversially suspended in January 2022 after he was arrested on suspicion of raping and assaulting a woman.

He was then charged with the offences but the case against him was eventually dropped, with the Crown Prosecution Service citing the withdrawal of key witnesses.

United subsequently launched an internal investigation into the matter and had provisionally planned to bring him back until their plans got leaked.

Following backlash and public outrage, club bosses led by former CEO Richard Arnold reversed their decision and decided to send the Englishman to Getafe on loan for the 2023/24 campaign.

He has been impressive in La Liga and has scored seven goals and registered five assists in 25 games. His exploits are believed to have earned him admiration from the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid. Both teams are considering making a summer transfer swoop for the United loanee.

It was thought that Greenwood does not have a future at Old Trafford but in his first interview since being officially declared United co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe opened the door to the possibility of the Englishman returning.

Ratcliffe said that a fresh decision on the player will be made in the summer and all the facts will be considered.

The INEOS billionaire explained that it’s important to judge fairly based on a number of considerations, including the values of the club.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Ratcliffe’s words were heard by Greenwood and if United were to call him, he would reject Barcelona and hop on the quickest flight back to England to play for his boyhood team.

However, according to The Athletic, the opposite is actually true and Greenwood is not too sure about the prospect of lining up for the Red Devils once more.

“Ratcliffe’s words have reached Greenwood, but sources with an understanding of the player’s thinking say that even if United could facilitate a return, he would be reluctant to accept.”

“Whatever the public perception, he felt United could have supported him better over his case and is said to harbour no great desire to play for the club again.”

“He also recognises he would face greater pressure and scrutiny if he returned, and staying in La Liga therefore holds major appeal.”

The newspaper adds that amidst all this, Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford are taking a look at the matter and are aware of how sensitive it is.

“[Ratcliffe and Brailsford] have not ruled out a Greenwood return, according to sources who, like others referenced in this piece, were speaking anonymously to protect relationships. They are said to understand that if Greenwood played for United again, fans would require an explanation.”

“They have also resolved to come to a decision and stick to it, mindful to avoid a repeat of the conflicting messages that came out of United last August.”

The Athletic also suggest that Ratcliffe’s public statements may have been geared towards propping up the Englishman’s value on the transfer market.

By virtue of admitting a return is on the cards, United’s hand in negotiations is automatically strengthened rather than informing everyone that he’s not wanted.

Laurie Whitwell and Guillermo Rai divulge that United have kept in “regular contact” with Greenwood and his family members.

Apparently, just a fortnight ago, football director John Murtough held talks with Greenwood’s dad, Andrew, who handles the player’s affairs.

Club chiefs are planning to make their way to Getafe to deliberate with the Spanish giants over the Carrington academy graduate’s future.

The Athletic note that Getafe are eager to keep the player either on another loan or even permanently, as long as the transfer fee is low.

There are fears within Estadio Coliseum that Greenwood could be priced out of a move. His contract expires in 2025 but United have the option of triggering a 12-month extension clause.

"It is very quiet": United missing their leader both on the pitch and in the dressing room - report

Manchester United’s injury curse has returned with a vengeance and Erik ten Hag is struggling to pick a strong side for the FA Cup tie against Nottingham Forest.

The Cup is the last shot at silverware and guarantees Europa League qualification, something that is looking difficult judging from their display against Fulham on Saturday.

A top four finish looks difficult while injuries to Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Rasmus Hojlund are threatening to derail the momentum that had been built up in the New Year which had seen the Red Devils remain unbeaten till the Cottagers arrived at Old Trafford.

Raphael Varane has struggled to lead the back four in the Argentine’s absence and the manager even hinted that Harry Maguire and the Frenchman were doubts for the Forest game.

Lisandro’s injury has been a huge blow

It has been clear for a while for all to see that the team really struggles to fulfill Ten Hag’s demands whenever the 2022 World Cup winner is not around.

There is no fluidity while playing out from the back as the team does not have a centre-back who is as comfortable on the ball as the Argentina international.

His aggressiveness usually translates onto to his fellow defenders and they are often seen high-fiving each other but that has stopped now that the former Ajax star is injured.

He is likely to be out until March but there are concerns that he might not play again this season. Ten Hag is adamant that will not be the case.

As per Talksport journalist Alex Crook, the club have not only missed Martinez on the field, even off the pitch, the dressing room lacks a strong voice currently.

Dressing room doesn’t function the same way

“It’s interesting you mention Lisandro Martinez, he is a real fans’ favourite as much for his industry and leadership as for his footballing ability.

“I am told when he is not in the dressing room, and he has missed a lot of games this season, that it is a very quiet dressing room. There aren’t too many leaders out there. You can see that on the pitch,” Crooks was quoted as saying by The Boot Room.

The manager trusts the 26-year-old a lot and the centre-back seems to run the dressing room effectively and his absence must be hitting the Old Trafford side hard.

Martinez leads from the front and how Ten Hag will be hoping to get back his general at the back before the season concludes.

His position is on the line and finishing in the Champions League places is imperative if he wants to remain in the job. And without the defender, Ten Hag’s system simply does not work.

Ten Hag will be counting on his out-of-form attackers to secure progress in the FA Cup

Manchester United travel to Nottingham Forest this evening in a bid to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Erik ten Hag has another extensive injury list on his hands and will be hoping his patched up XI will have enough to get past Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

With Rasmus Hojlund missing, United’s attack looked toothless against Fulham in their previous game and with Bruno Fernandes now a doubt, things have got even more difficult.

Coupled with major defensive injuries, Ten Hag will have to set his team up with caution to protect a back four that is unlikely to have played together much, if at all, this season.

United will need to navigate the early exchanges and quieten down the home support who will be sensing a famous night under the lights at the City Ground.

Morgan Gibbs-White is Forest’s chief creative force and showcased his qualities in Forest’s league win against United in December.

Casemiro is one of the few star passed fit for the contest and will be tasked with dealing with the 24-year-old, as well as setting up attacks for United.

It’s a big night for the Brazilian who’s ability to compete amid the frantic nature of English football has been called into question in recent months.

Kobbie Mainoo will bring calm to Casemiro’s storm and the pair will be key if the Red Devils are to take the sting out of the game and keep the ball for Ten Hag’s side.

Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho will provide United’s main attacking threat with Rashford likely to be employed through the middle again meaning a recall for Antony on the left hand side.

The out-of-form Brazilian should come back with a point to prove after being omitted from United’s recent games. He enjoyed a rare good afternoon at Forest last season and Ten Hag will be desperate for his £90 million man to come good tonight.

Despite the injuries and lack of form there is undoubted quality in United’s front line and getting the ball to the attacking trio should still cause Forest issues.

Forest do not keep many clean sheets and isolating the full-backs should give United’s wide men the chance to shine.

Additionally, Rashford has a good record against tonight’s opponents and if he catches fire through the middle, could be the matchwinner again this evening.

Even on off days, Rashford’s pace will always be a major threat and if United can get last season’s top scorer into goal scoring positions, it may be the perfect night for him to finally kick start his season.

However, keeping the ball and defending well will be the first order of the day this evening and don’t be surprised to see another 30 minutes at the end of regulation time, with penalty kicks a major possibility.

One that slipped through the net: former United triallist impressing for arch rivals

Former Manchester United trialist, Mason Cotcher, is on trial at Leeds United.

The 17 year old did not make the grade at United but could be on his way to bitter rivals Leeds permanently, if he impresses during his stint in Yorkshire.

The former Sunderland player certainly got off to the perfect start.

According to the Sunderland Echo, “Cotcher started and scored the only goal of the game as Leeds under-18s defeated Sunderland 1-0 in the Premier League under-18 north competition”.

During his time at the Black Cats, Cotcher pitched in with 10 goal contributions in 19 appearances for the under-18s.

The player was also brought into Tony Mowbray’s squad for the FA Cup third-round win over Shrewsbury Town at the start of 2023 but departed the club last summer.

After leaving the North-East club, it was relayed here that Cotcher had joined the Red Devils on a trial basis.

After the loan departure of Joe Hugill, a space had opened up in United’s u21s which is currently being filled by Ethan Wheatley after he stepped up from the u18s.

However, Cotcher was not deemed worthy of being kept on by the coaches at Carrington and he has since got an opportunity across the Pennines.

Should Leeds decide to sign up the player, Sunderland will be compensated.

The paper reports, “youngsters who have not yet signed professional terms are free to move between clubs with compensation tribunals taking place if clubs cannot agree on a financial package between them, which means Sunderland will be compensated for their part in Cotcher’s development should the player sign for a new club”.

Cotcher has so far featured twice for the England under 17 team and will be hoping he can do enough to sign professional forms at his new club to start his footballing career in earnest.

United's born-again hero reveals advice that Sir Alex gave that "always stuck with" him

The second part of Manchester United defender Jonny Evans’ interview on the United podcast has been released this weekend and he has delved into a few more details about his time at the club.

The Northern Ireland international has been a crucial part of the side and an experienced head this season as United have been ravaged by injuries, especially to the backline.

With fresh injury concerns for Harry Maguire, who will definitely not play tonight against Nottingham Forest and Raphael Varane who is a doubt, Evans may be asked to step in once again in a pivotal moment in the team’s campaign.

Reflecting on his opening games for the Red Devils back in 2008/2009, Evans praised the influence of Rio Ferdinand on his assimilation into the first team.

“Rio was so calming on the pitch. He didn’t get mad or criticise. He was always very encouraging and made me quite relaxed,” he said. The Belfast born defender also believed that he shared “some similar traits” to the legendary defender and due to that, they could relate to one another.

Evans also delved into the pride he felt at being handed the United number six shirt when Wes Brown left the club in 2011. When asked by the interviewers if he felt he had made it once he was given such an iconic shirt he replied, “yeah. I made it. Wow, I’m at United and I’m number six”.

The interview went into somewhat darker territory, touching on the 1-6 drubbing to Manchester City in 2011. The afternoon was even worse for the Ulsterman as he was sent off early in the second half with the score at only 0-1. Mario Balotelli had been let in behind the United defence and Evans tugged at his shirt and as the last man, the referee had no choice but to brandish the red card.

“It was a dark day for everyone involved. I thought I’d been playing quite well in a sense, up until half time”.

Discussing the situation in further depth, the defender recalled watching the Citizens goals fly in on a television from the dressing room at Old Trafford, as United were ruthlessly put to the sword.

“I don’t know, what do you even think at that moment in time?”.

However, Evans praised Sir Alex Ferguson’s reaction to the game. One might have expected the defender to have received the famous “hairdryer treatment” but there was none of that.

“He (Ferguson) never took anything out on me. Obviously I felt a huge responsibility for that, regret”.

The Scottish manager did pass on some sage advice for the then young defender.

Evans recalled that his manager took him to one side and told him, “next time, trust your keeper”. The Northern Ireland legend claimed that this advice “always stuck with me”.

He also credited the manager’s choice to put the player right back in the team after he had served his suspension and he described the decision as a massive “show of faith really”.

Finally, United’s current number 35 spoke out on the difficult time David Moyes had at the club.

“It was a difficult situation to come into for any manager. How could Moyes come in and follow Sir Alex?”.

Evans will be hoping he can get some action tonight and help his side progress to the quarter finals of the FA Cup and perhaps dream of winning the trophy he never did as part of the United squad the first time around. He would however captain Leicester City to an impressive FA Cup triumph in 2021.

Bombshell: Marcus Rashford made available for sale by Ratcliffe, fans will be shocked - report

Manchester United’s unbeaten start to 2024 came to an end against Fulham on Saturday with the Cottagers clinching a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

Despite the Red Devils coming into the contest on the back of four consecutive wins, the performances were far from convincing and it always felt a reversal was just around the corner.

Injuries to Luke Shaw and Rasmus Hojlund before the game did not help matters, nor did manager Erik ten Hag’s obstinate tactical stand.

The result meant United failed to close the gap with Aston Villa in fourth and remained sixth, three points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who now have a game in hand.

Ruthless Ratcliffe

INEOS who are officially in charge of sporting affairs are desperate to see the club finish in the top four as it will give the new regime a better chance at attracting the best players.

Even the manager’s future depends on it and Sir Jim Ratcliffe is expected to be ruthless, unlike the Glazers, as he seeks to drag the club back to the top of English football.

Plenty of behind-the-scenes changes are already in the pipeline and the British billionaire is also expected to carry out a summer clearout with many players deemed not good enough.

Under the American family, players were safe in knowing their future was secure even if they did not perform while the manager would get the boot.

INEOS have other plans in mind and as HITC Football put it, “very few” of the current squad are “untouchable” when it comes to moving them on.

Superstars are not exempt

The Peoples Person has already relayed reports which have stated the exodus is likely to go into double digits but Graeme Bailey has suggested even the heads of superstars are on the chopping block.

One player who is on huge wages and recently signed a new long-term deal is Marcus Rashford, who impressed one and all with a splendid last season where he tallied 30 goals to his name.

However, as has been the case with the Englishman ever since he broke into the first team, he usually blows hot and cold and often does not deliver after a season of promise.

This term, the Mancunian has managed only five goals thus far and more than his on-field heroics, he has made the headlines for his crazy off-field antics.

From partying after the Manchester Derby debacle early on in the season to reporting sick after a 12-hour tequila bender, the England international has disappointed his teammates and the fans.

While the player himself wants to stay on and try and impress the new minority stakeholders, displays like the one against Fulham, where he cut a disinterested figure, are not the best look.

Rashy in danger

And it seems Ratcliffe is not taking kindly to his actions and if he does not pull up his socks, he could see his future at his boyhood club slipping away.

“Indeed, that means that someone like Marcus Rashford – who only signed a new long-term contract at the start of the season – would be allowed to leave.

“He has not taken up the role expected of him within the squad as a senior figure, and the club would be open to his exit.”

Based on current form, the 26-year-old looks like a player who is not interested and is not enjoying himself. It will be interesting to see how long of a rope INEOS give him.

The likes of Paris Saint-Germain, who are long-term suitors and need a wide forward now that Kylian Mbappe is set to leave, and surprisingly, Real Madrid have been linked with a summer move.

Mason Greenwood pleads for resolution to increasingly awkward situation - report

Mason Greenwood has requested the probe by Liga officials into Jude Bellingham’s alleged slur towards the English forward be dropped.

Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since being arrested on suspicion of rape, assault and making threats to kill in January 2022. He was later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in October 2022. These charges were then dropped in February 2023 following the Crown Prosecution’s decision to discontinue the case.

Greenwood has always denied the charges brought against him.

Towards the end of the summer last year, proposals by United officials to reintegrate the 22-year-old into their first-team squad were leaked by The Athletic. This led to massive public backlash and a hasty retreat by Old Trafford executives, who instead panickily decided a move away from the club was the best option for Greenwood.

The 22-year-old then joined La Liga side Getafe on loan at the end of the summer transfer window. He’s played 25 times for his newly adopted side this season.

Earlier this month, during a tense game between Getafe and Real Madrid, Bellingham appeared to mouth the words “r-pist” at Greenwood, following a challenge between the two players.

The match finished 2-0 to los Blancos but Getafe officials complained to La Liga authorities over the alleged incident. Manager Jose Bordalas also offered a staunch defence of Greenwood as a “great guy” in a press-conference.

“I know the same thing that you know. It’s not up to me, it’s the club, La Liga and the Federation that have to make an assessment about it. The only thing that I can say is that I ask for respect from Mason Greenwood because he is a great guy. He is a man who respects everyone and has exemplary behaviour,” Bordalas revealed.

In response to the complaint, La Liga issued a statement confirming their intention to investigate the matter:

“Getafe yesterday transferred the complaint to the La Liga match director and La Liga, as it always does on these occasions, has requested an expert report on lip reading to investigate the matter and act on the basis of what can be proven beyond doubt (by the lip reader).”

At the time this investigation was launched, which could see Bellingham receive a lengthy ban if found guilty, it was reported Greenwood “wanted no fuss of any kind.”

The Sun now contends the 22-year-old forward wants the probe into Bellingham’s insult dropped completely. The report quotes a source close to to the player, who reveals Greenwood has directly communicated to Liga officials he does not wish for them to pursue the matter any further.

“Mason has told them he doesn’t want Jude to be punished and has asked them to drop it. He doesn’t want bad publicity and wants to get on with playing football,” the source states. “He was very upset at the time as he didn’t expect it from someone like Jude. But he knows he’s always likely to be a target for that kind of stuff so he’s accepted he’ll need a thick skin.”

A stir was made over a potential return to Old Trafford for Greenwood, following comments by Sir Jim Ratcliffe – the club’s new co-owner, and sole controller of the football operation at United.

When asked about the situation with the 22-year-old, Ratcliffe replied, “It’s a fresh decision. I can talk about the principle. I am not going to talk about Mason. I am familiar with it. The principle is the important one. We will have other issues going forwards.”

“You are dealing with young people who have not always been brought up in the best circumstances, who have a lot of money and they don’t always have the guidance they should have.

“What we need to do when have issues like that is understand real affects not the hype then we need to make a fair decision in the light of the club’s values. That’s what we need to do and that’s how we will deal with it. We need to look at facts, judge fairly and take into consideration what the values of the club are.”

The Daily Mirror reveals these words “sent shockwaves through the club”, with the British billionaire potentially risking the ‘feel-good’ factor the early stages of the INEOS revolution at Old Trafford have produced.

United’s key defensive transfer target wants triumphant return to Barcelona

Manchester United’s defensive issues throughout the campaign have left Erik ten Hag under major pressure at Old Trafford.

A long injury list and loss of form across the back four have hamstrung United all season, leaving the decision not to strengthen the defence last summer in question.

United will certainly be looking for defensive reinforcements in the upcoming window with a raft of players being linked with a move.

Nice centre-half Jean-Clair Todibo is one of those reportedly targeted by United and the player is open to move in the summer.

However, the Frenchman has spoken on leaving Ligue 1 but it seems as though United are not the only team on his mind.

Todibo spent an unsuccessful period with Spanish giants Barcelona from 2019-2021 and despite struggling for minutes in his first stint,he sounds keen on a return to the Nou Camp.

“A return to Barcelona? Why not? I don’t regret it, not at all. FC Barcelona is still a great experience. I learned a lot from Gerard Piqué, Samuel Umtiti, Clément Lenglet… It did me good. I discovered the very, very high level,” he said.

The 24-year-old cited the quality of the players in front of him at the time as the reason for his lack of game time first time around.

“I didn’t have the desired minutes because there were very, very big players in front of me. I also had a coach, Ernesto Valverde, who was under pressure, so it was normal for him to put Gerard Piqué instead of an inexperienced 19-year-old,” he added.

Todibo has certainly found his feet in recent years after performing to a high level with Nice.

The Frenchman is now one of the most sought after defenders on the continent and United will do well to capture his signature.

Before then, United will be desperate to end the season well with Champions League qualification vital to their transfer budget for the upcoming window.

"We need them": United manager predicts big role for two under-used starlets

Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag, has spoken of the importance of both Omari Forson and Amad Diallo in the upcoming matches for the Red Devils.

With United’s fitness problems continuing to mount up, Rasmus Hojlund’s injury has meant that Marcus Rashford has had to move into the centre forward position and Alejandro Garnacho has moved back to the left wing, after playing since the new year on the right.

This means there is a vacancy to fill on the right hand side of the attack.

The penny has seemingly finally dropped for Ten Hag that his expensive flop, Antony, is not good enough to fulfil the role and other options will be needed.

Academy product, Omari Forson, made his Premier League debut at the weekend but got little chance to impress as the whole team suffered to find any sort of rhythm.

Amad Diallo also got a rare outing off the bench when he was given the final ten minutes as the Red Devils searched for a goal.

Speaking after the game to the BBC (via the club’s official website) the Dutchman praised both his young players’ performance in the loss.

Commenting on Forson’s first Premier League start he stated, “I think it was reasonable. He had some good actions. He was reliable in defending and had some good actions in possession. I saw, for his first time, he did well.”

The former Ajax coach also spoke highly of Diallo’s role in the game in spite of the limited time he was on the pitch.

“Amad looks very sharp. I think it was a good sub [performance] from him. I think that’s good for the future”.

The 54 year old then added how important the two players would be over the course of the next few weeks until the Mancunian team’s injury woes subside a little.

“We need them because we have our problems in the frontline. So it’s about them, to show they can contribute to this team, that they can have an end product but also to show [re]liability.”

It will be interesting to see who the increasingly under-fire coach opts for on the right wing on Wednesday night, in what is a crucial cup tie against Nottingham Forest.

Lose that and one feels that Ten Hag will really be feeling the heat.

100% aerial duels won, 88% pass accuracy: United loanee returns to form in crucial victory

Will Fish and Hibernian secured an incredibly welcome 2-1 victory over Dundee yesterday afternoon at Easter Road.

The win was the Edinburgh club’s first in the league since the 9th of December.

The Hibees put in a dominant display where they had 16 shots to seven and enjoyed 60% of the ball.

A penalty from Dylan Vente was cancelled out by a fine 78th minute strike from Dundee’s Luke McCowan.

However the Edinburgh side found a winner shortly after from Myziane Maolida, after some nice work on the counter.

Fish did not have a particularly troubling afternoon as Dundee rarely threatened, but put in a much more solid effort than his last time out against Aberdeen, where he made some crucial errors in the match.

Sofascore gave the United player a 7.1 for his afternoon’s work.

The centre back made 5 clearances for his team in total and won all four of his aerial duels in the box.

However, the academy product really made his mark on the game from an offensive standpoint.

Fish had 54 touches and completed an impressive 88% of his passes during the match.

The central defender also connected on six out of his eight long ball attempts, proving once again how he is developing on the ball.

He will be disappointed not to have added to his solitary goal of the season, as he had two shots on target and really should have buried both.

The first attempt was after some head tennis after a corner and the ball broke kindly to the defender but he could only sidefoot it straight at the keeper from around the penalty spot.

The second effort arrived after another corner in the first half when he rose like a salmon but headed an unmarked effort right down the keeper’s throat.

The Mancunian has been a revelation during his time in Scotland and earlier this week, both Ipswich and Middlesbrough were linked with a summer move for him.

The youngster will next be in action in a crunch game against cross-city rivals Hearts on Wednesday night, where Hibs will be looking to avenge their Christmas defeat at the hands of the old enemy.

3 saves, 81% pass accuracy: United loanee puts in strong display in spite of team's loss

Radek Vitek and Accrington Stanley narrowly lost 0-1 at home to Crawley Town yesterday afternoon.

A Harry Ransom goal in the 68th minute was enough to take all three points home for the Reds.

Stanley had less possession with 47% but absolutely dominated the chances created as they came up with 23 efforts and had 10 shots on target but could not find a way through.

In contrast, Crawley only managed nine shots in total and four on target but found the all-important winner that the home side could not.

In what was a much busier afternoon for Vitek’s opposite number, the Czech keeper was given a score of 6.9 on Sofascore.

The 20 year old made three saves in the game and two of these were from inside the box.

The keeper also made one punch and a clearance for his side.

He was beaten by one long range effort but it luckily hit the right-hand post.

For the goal, there was little the United Youth Cup winner could do.

The ball was floated in from a corner and from close range was glanced into the bottom right hand corner, nicking the edge of the post to highlight just how far out of reach it was for the United player.

Furthermore, the glaring sun in the keeper’s eyes hardly helped the situation.

Vitek did put in a much better display than recent games with his feet, as he had a much improved passing accuracy of 81%, connecting on 26 out of his 32 passes.

What’s more, he was also able to make one key pass during the game.

The result means that Accrington stay in 14th in the division and will travel to Walsall on Tuesday night, hoping to find their first win in two games.

United eye "fundamental piece" in Inter's title charge to bolster pitiful defence - report

Manchester United have expressed an interest in signing Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni.

The Red Devils’ defence has been questionable at best this season as they have conceded 56 goals in all competitions and we have not even entered spring yet.

Yesterday afternoon’s 1-2 defeat at home to Fulham once again proved the weakness of the side in this department as Fulham, much like Luton the week before, cut through the team at will.

The future of numerous centre backs such as Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are all up in the air so naturally, the Mancunian side has been linked to a plethora of centre backs.

Jarrad Branthwaite is thought to be the top target and there have also been serious links to Nice’s Jean-Clair Tobido and Lille’s Leny Yoro.

However, Fichajes have added another name to the mix, Alessandro Bastoni.

The Italian international has enjoyed a fantastic season where his side sit top of Serie A and have only conceded a miserly 12 goals in 24 matches.

According to the Spanish outlet, “Premier League giants Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United are all eyeing” the talented defender.

“Bastoni has been a standout figure for Inter, starting 19 Serie A matches this season and playing a crucial role in the team’s success in the previous campaign, where he helped secure the Serie A title”.

Understandably, the Champions League finalists would like to keep their prized asset as they push for domestic and European titles.

“Inter are in no hurry to sell him, as he is a fundamental piece in the search for the Serie A title under the direction of Simone Inzaghi”.

Nonetheless, as is usually the case, a huge offer from England could change the Nerazzurri’s stance.

“It is rumoured that a significant offer of around €100 million could tempt the Italian club to consider selling him”.

Fichajes sum up the situation in an optimistic way for the English teams and claim, “in short, Bastoni’s future appears to lie in the Premier League, with several top clubs showing interest in securing his services and Inter facing the temptation of an offer for one of their most valuable assets”.

This is not the first time United have been credited with an interest in the player as they were linked to him last spring, alongside their cross-city rivals.

It is clear that INEOS do not rate the current set of defenders and there will certainly be movement in the summer in this regard. Bastoni would most likely be a popular choice due to his experience and sensational form of late.

United "favourites" to land World Cup winner on a free transfer in the summer-report

Manchester United are looking to bring in Real Betis midfielder, Guido Rodríguez, on a free transfer in the summer, according to a new report.

The 29 year old was a member of the 2022 World Cup winning Argentinian squad and he is in his fifth season in La Liga representing Betis.

Casemiro’s form has fallen off a cliff recently, demonstrated by his recent disastrous performance against Luton Town.

Consequently, it has been reported that United are looking at options to replace the midfielder in the summer window, as the Brazilian is reportedly more and more open to a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.

Spanish outlet Fichajes claim that the Red Devils could be about to swoop in and take advantage of Rodriguez’s reluctance to sign a new deal at Betis.

The outlet claims, “in the run-up to the next summer transfer market, Real Betis finds itself at a crossroads with respect to Guido Rodríguez, who since January 1 has been free to negotiate his arrival at zero cost to any club that may be interested in his services”.

“The Argentine player has attracted the attention of several high-level teams in Europe, including Manchester United, who according to the latest reports are positioned as the main favourites to acquire his services at zero cost for 2024/2025”.

However, United will not get a free-run at the player as it is reported that both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid offer a chance to remain in La Liga.

The website elaborated on the positives of the move for the Spanish team claiming, “Betis has been facing financial difficulties in recent times, and the departure of Guido Rodríguez, who has played 158 games so far, could be an opportunity to clean up the accounts”.

It is safe to assume that they are referring to clearing up the wage bill as any move for Rodriguez would be a free transfer.

This is not the first time that the Red Devils have been credited with an interest in the player.

In August last year it was relayed that United had opened talks with Betis about the signing of the midfielder for around €20m.

Furthermore, it was also reported in November that United were working hard to sign the South American in January as a result of Casemiro’s injury earlier in the campaign.

The Mancunian side have also been linked recently with a move for another Argentine World Cup winning midfielder, Exequiel Palacios, to take over Casemiro’s role as Kobbie Mainoo’s partner in the midfield.

Palacios would certainly be a better age profile at only 25 but the free transfer element could certainly swing in Rodriguez’s favour, to open up the possibility of signing more players to fix the numerous holes in the Red Devils’ squad that have been exposed this year.

Last-minute CL wonder goal will have left United scouts buzzing at brilliant Brazilian

Manchester United are hoping for a busy summer with INEOS preparing to take charge of their first transfer window at the end of the season.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team are well aware of the reinforcements required on field as the lead they club into a new dawn.

As ever with United, the transfer rumour mill will go into overdrive as the window draws closer and a raft of players will be linked with a move to Old Trafford.

As reported by Sport Witness, the latest on the the list of potential targets are Porto duo, Alan Varela and Galeno.

United sent scouts to Portugal for the midweek Champions League fixture with Arsenal and would no doubt have been left impressed with the pair.

Both players completed 90 minutes with Galeno scoring the decisive goal in the final seconds of the game – a fine, curling 25 yard strike.

The winger has been in fine form for the Portuguese side this season, particularly in Europe with Wednesday’s goal his fifth in the competition.

At 26, the Brazilian is approaching his peak years and would bring some experience to a youthful frontline at United having racked up over 200 games for in Portugal, for Porto and Braga.

Fellow South American Alan Varela is the other player of interest with the busy Argentine midfielder also enjoying an excellent night against Mikel Arteta’s side.

The 22-year-old has been outstanding since his move from Boca Juniors last summer and his tenacious style of play looks tailor made for the Premier League.

Varela would certainly give United’s midfield more of a bite and could well be seen as a long term replacement for Casemiro.

However, should United plump for one, or both, of the Porto men, they are likely to face stiff competition for their respective signatures.

Premier League rivals Aston Villa and West Ham United also sent scouts to watch Porto’s impressive victory and no doubt would have been impressed by the pair.

United will de desperate for a strong end to the season as they attempt to finish in the Champions League qualification places which will help aid their transfer strategy in the summer.

Erik ten Hag’s side are unbeaten in 2024 and hope to carry that good form into Saturday’s clash with Fulham at Old Trafford.

4-2-3-1: this refreshing young United side will cruise past Fulham tomorrow

Erik ten Hag now has to face most, if not all of the rest of this season without two of his best defenders, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw.

Both missed a substantial part of the first half of the season and after battling their way back to fitness, they have both suffered serious setbacks.

The question is, what will the manager see as his best starting defence for the rest of the season in the pair’s absence?

Harry Maguire had worked his way into being one of the first names on the teamsheet after a fine patch of form, but a horror show against Luton on Sunday saw him hauled off at half time. His deputy, Jonny Evans, was superb in the second half and surely did enough to keep his place.

Raphael Varane is also in good form and will undoubtedly start alongside him if fit and available.

With Aaron Wan-Bissaka also unavailable, Diogo Dalot could remain at right back with a makeshift left back such as Victor Lindelof or Sofyan Amrabat brought in. However, Fulham are generally quicker from the right flank with the likes of Harry Wilson than from the left, which is usually occupied by either Bobby de Cordova-Reid or the 35-year-old Willian.

So we think the much faster Dalot will be switched to the left, with Lindelof playing right back.

16-year-old Harry Amass has been training with the first team but a place on the bench at best seems the most likely reward for his endeavours at this stage.

Andre Onana will, of course, be in goal.

In midfield, another star to be substituted at half-time on Sunday was Casemiro, whose form is surely an area of concern. If he is dropped, Sofyan Amrabat is the like-for-like replacement but we think that as it’s a home game, the more attacking Scott McTominay might be given a start alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

Christian Eriksen is another option. Mason Mount is almost certainly still unavailable.

Bruno Fernandes will play in the number 10 role.

Up front, business as usual is expected with Marcus Rashford on the left flank, Alejandro Garnacho on the right and the on-fire Rasmus Hojlund up front.

Antony, Omari Forson and Amad Diallo are other options but Anthony Martial remains out injured.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted starting XI for tomorrow’s 3pm kick-off:

High-profile United stars in danger as incoming director makes his vision clear to INEOS - report

Dan Ashworth is reported to have told Old Trafford officials they need to significantly lower the average age of the Manchester United squad during his interview for the Sporting Director role at the club.

Ben Jacobs (CaughtOffside) reveals the Newcastle United director, who was placed on gardening leave by the Tyneside club following United’s approach for him, made reference to the aging nature of Erik ten Hag’s squad as an area of concern.

The reporter reveals sources indicate Ashworth claimed “the average age of the squad must be brought down by 1.5 years” as part of the expected overhaul this summer at Old Trafford.

The average age of United’s squad this season has been 26.1, which ranks as the 9th oldest in the league.

Aston Villa and Manchester City rank 8th and 7th respectively, with an average of 26.5 and 26.7. By contrast, however, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are joint 17th, with the London rivals’ squads both averaging at 25.3. Liverpool’s average age is 25.7, putting them in 11th.

With City and Liverpool reaching a critical juncture in their team’s evolution – as City will need to soon replace Kyle Walker (33) and Kevin De Bruyne (32), while Liverpool will need to plan for life after Virgil van Dijk (33) and Mohammed Salah (31) – both of United’s rivals will likely be lowering their average age this summer as well.

The two London clubs – Arsenal and Spurs – are in healthy positions with young squads who are set to improve with the passage of time, rather than decline.

As such, Ashworth’s observation during his interviews for the executive role at United will have resonated with the INEOS Sport team. There’s evidently congruity between the two parties in Ashworth’s judgement, demonstrated by the fact they are so aggressively pursuing the Newcastle director to lead their revolution at Old Trafford.

United’s squad is not necessarily old, so much as it is aged in particular areas; in other positions, Ten Hag’s team is almost too youthful, and requires more experienced heads to help guide a selection of talented youngsters.

At centre-back, Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire will both turn 32 next season. Victor Lindelof will turn 30 in the summer, while Jonny Evans reached 36 in January. A younger, more physically capable centre-back to partner the 25-year-old Lisandro Martinez will be prioritised this summer.

It’s a similar story in midfield, where last season’s first-choice triumvirate – Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Bruno Fernandes – are increasingly close to the embrace of Father Time. Casemiro and Eriksen will both turn 33 next season, while Fernandes will hit the dreaded 30 threshold.

The signing of Mason Mount (25) and the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo (18) offer energy and youth in equal measure, but further investment will be required to replace the midfield elders in Ten Hag’s team.

The Dutch manager’s insistence on a press-heavy style this season, predicated upon dominating transitions, also lends itself more readily to younger legs. Casemiro and Eriksen have struggled this year in a philosophy they are ill-suited to, and both players were the subject of interest from abroad in January.

With Ashworth drawing closer and closer to confirmation as the club’s new sporting director, a combination of youth and physical capability will be at the forefront of United’s thinking this summer as they begin to revamp their first-team squad; as will the departure of some of the older players in the dressing room.

Fabrizio Romano offers glimmer of optimism over injured United star’s return

Manchester United believe Luke Shaw will return from injury just before the end of the season.

The 28-year-old defender was forced off the pitch just before half-time, during his side’s 2-1 win over Luton at Kenilworth Road. Ominously, Shaw headed straight down the tunnel into the away dressing room for an immediate assessment by the United medical staff.

After the game, Erik ten Hag cut a worried figure in his post-match interview.

“I can’t tell. We have to wait minimum until tomorrow to see what’s going on. When you come off, it doesn’t look great,” the Dutchman revealed when asked about Shaw’s condition.

Sources at the stadium also spotted the full back limping heavily as the United team departed Kenilworth Road.

After more comprehensive tests were conducted earlier this week, initial reports had suggested Shaw may be ruled out for the remainder of the season. It was revealed he had suffered a relapse of the hamstring injury which had sidelined him over the Christmas period.

However, Fabrizio Romano now contends Old Trafford officials “expect” their defender to “return just before the end of the season.” The transfer guru adds Shaw is hopeful he will “be ready for the Euros”, and that the United medical staff will be closely monitoring him on a weekly basis.

While this still a significant blow for United’s fortunes this year, the fact the club are expectant Shaw will return before the season ends – rather than ‘hopeful’ – offers a glimmer of optimism.

Ten Hag’s side close out the year with back-to-back games against Arsenal (H) and Brighton & Hove Albion (A) in the final two weeks. Both games could very well be pivotal for United’s hopes of securing Champions League qualification.

Similarly, the club’s last chance of success this season lies with the FA Cup. United will play Nottingham Forest next week in the fifth round and will be expecting to progress through to the quarter-final stage.

With Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Arsenal having already departed the competition, there will be quiet optimism over United’s chances at making it to the final, as they did the previous year. This will take place on May 25th, six days after the final league game against Brighton.

Shaw’s expected return date offers some hope he may still play a key role at a key moment in determining United’s success this season.

“Not naive”: Shearer predicts what will happen in United’s stand-off with Newcastle over Ashworth

Alan Shearer has predicted that a compromise will be struck between Newcastle United and Manchester United over Dan Ashworth.

It was reported last week that Ashworth had agreed to join Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s new-look United and was subsequently put on gardening leave by Newcastle this week.

In a massive interview given by Sir Jim Ratcliffe yesterday, The Peoples Person relayed that the new owner of the Red Devils labelled the Magpies’ decision to give the football director such a long period of gardening leave, until 2026, as “silly”.

However, it has been reported that Newcastle’s private stance may not be as steadfast as their public one.

It was relayed here that the Geordies are now ready to reach a compromise for the talented executive.

Sources close to Football Insider stated that after negotiations on Wednesday, the Magpies were likely to meet INEOS in the middle over the former Brighton man’s future.

Speaking to The Rest is Football podcast, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has weighed in on the issue.

The all-time leading Premier League goal scorer praised Ashworth’s previous body of work by stating, “he’s had a really good career when you look at what he did at Brighton, what he did with England. Newcastle did that to Brighton in terms of they wanted him badly at the football club. He had to go on gardening leave at Brighton before he could take over at Newcastle”.

Delving into the matter further, Shearer predicted that his former side will eventually release their employee from his contract and suggested that keeping Ashworth on such a long leave would be futile anyway.

“We’re not naive enough to think that once someone goes on gardening leave then they’re not working for that other football club. My guess is that a compromise will be had, they’ll [Manchester United] pay a fee. He’s done a really good job at Newcastle, but when you think about what he knows in terms of players’ contracts, clauses in their contracts, who Newcastle might have to sell, who they want to buy – he’ll take all that info with him to another football club”.

The former England international also revealed what a big blow Ashworth’s decision is for the Magpies.

“It’s a tough one, but it is what it is. If you do well at your job then someone is going to try and poach you. Manchester United, they’re a huge football club and they’re going to go on to bigger and better things under this new ownership model that they’ve got. It’ll be sorted out one way or the other, he’ll eventually leave, United will pay a fee and Newcastle will get someone else in to do that job.”

After calling Ashworth a 10/10 sporting director yesterday, Ratcliffe has certainly nailed his colours to the mast on who he thinks can help United out of their current malaise.

United legend invited to special committee to advise on crucial stepping stone for club - report

Manchester United have invited former player-turned-businessman, Gary Neville, to help advise on the regeneration project around Old Trafford.

It was reported earlier this week that United had given the green light to proposals to regenerate land surrounding Old Trafford.

The plan is called the “Trafford Wharfside Development Framework” and aims to build new homes, hotels, and shops, and better connections between Trafford Wharfside and Manchester city centre.

According to Matt Lawton at The Times, “Gary Neville has been invited by Manchester United to join a special committee to oversee the regeneration of Old Trafford and the surrounding area”.

The former United number two has made a name for himself in the business world after his playing days came to an end in 2011.

The former defender has of course been a successful pundit at Sky Sports for over a decade now and he is reportedly paid £1.1million a year, which is only behind Match of the Day stalwart, Gary Lineker.

This is only part of his post-retirement story however, as the former right back is also co-owner of Salford City football club and also has a part ownership of Hotel Football which he co-owns with Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and his brother, Phil Neville, as well as the GG Hospitality Management Company.

The man from Bury has also recently appeared on British TV show, Dragon’s Den.

The show specifically focuses on people who want to create money-spinning ideas and the fact he was invited on the show, highlights the respect people have for his business acumen.

Neville has been a vocal critic of United and specifically, the Glazers’ lack of investment around The Theatre of Dreams.

Speaking on the lack of investment in and around the football club in 2021, he advised that the way forward for the club is “regeneration; a new stadium, new training facilities, a women’s stadium, an academy stadium”.

“You’ve got to make everyone believe they are on a journey to excellence and that culturally you’re connecting with people not just on a local or national level, but globally. Locally to start with, then you build a national community, then you build an international community,” he had said.

It may not be the stadium yet, but certainly regeneration of the area of Old Trafford could seriously be the beginning of the fostering of a local community that Neville has spoken so passionately about in the past.

Optimism among the fan base is high as it was announced last night that INEOS are officially the new minority owners of the club.

Michael Owen: Rasmus Hojlund showed why he's better than Darwin Nunez last weekend

Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker, Michael Owen, has claimed that Rasmus Hojlund’s opening strike against Luton Town was a more efficient shot selection than that of Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez against Brentford.

Both players have enjoyed successful seasons to date, as the two strikers are locked on 13 goals for their respective sides in all competitions.

The two players are also no strangers to criticism for their wastefulness in front of goal.

Roy Keane spoke of Hojlund’s poor finishing versus Wigan at the start of January. However, he has recently been much more positive about the Dane by claiming after his strike against West Ham that “he’s obviously got a lot of confidence, he’s on a good run, brilliant goal”.

Rio Ferdinand has also claimed that “he is cooking right now”.

The Liverpool forward has scored goals during his time in England but has also been ridiculed for his inefficiency in front of goal and has been described as “one of Jurgen Klopp’s biggest conundrums”.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Owen claimed that both goals had similar contexts but that Hojlund’s was a much better finish.

“A long punt or clearance, just like the Liverpool goal. Exactly the same position now. Everything is the same, isn’t it?”.

“What does he (Hojlund) do? In fact, it’s probably easier to chip the goalkeeper from here (in comparison to Nunez’s). He has got another four or five yards to get the ball up and down, so it’s the easier finish but still not the right finish”.

“But what does he do? Much more efficiently. He goes around the goalkeeper, that’s what I am saying. That finish, whether you like slotting, dinking or going around like that. In the long term, you are going to score far more goals doing the right percentage finish each time and that’s what Hojlund has just done”.

The Premier League winning striker with United blasted Nunez’s decision to chip the keeper and claimed, “there are no rights or wrongs in finishing in many ways. Apart from the Nunez one, it’s just wrong in many ways. You just can’t do that and score big numbers. It’s just incredible”.

The 2001 Ballon d’Or winner is a controversial figure amongst both United and Liverpool fans but if he knows one thing, it is how to finish, as he netted 222 goals in spite of his career being blighted with injury.

From Hojlund’s perspective, it is vital that he does not let the recent increase in positive media attention get to his head and he must continue to do what he is doing, and that is putting the ball in the back of the net for his boyhood club.

"A unique opportunity": United legend has pick of 3 top-tier clubs following huge career decision - report

Former Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea, has three options if he were to make a move back to La Liga in the 2024/2025 season.

The Spaniard has been without a club since negotiations for a new deal with United broke down in the summer and he was replaced by Ajax’s Andre Onana.

The 33 year old has been linked with copious clubs ranging from Spain, England, the United States and Saudi Arabia.

However, no deal has come to pass and the Madrid born keeper still finds himself without a club.

It was also recently reported that the keeper has made the decision that he only wants to continue his playing career in Spain.

Fichajes claims that the Spanish goalkeeper “seems to be leaning towards a return to his native country, with there currently being three possible destinations in which the goalkeeper could fit perfectly throughout the next season”.

The Spanish outlet states, Sevilla, Real Betis and Barcelona offer “a unique opportunity for the experienced Spanish goalkeeper”.

The player has been linked to all three clubs in the past but at this point, it may be easier to find teams the legendary keeper has not been tipped to join.

Sevilla were credited with an interest in the player to replace Yassine Bounou in July.

The Andalusian side are struggling and currently languish in 15th spot in the table and have conceded 37 goals in 25 games. The prospect of signing such an experienced keeper on a free transfer might just be appealing to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan team.

Neighbours, Real Betis, have also been linked to the player, as it was relayed here that in November the Liga club were in talks to sign the player.

Betis are enjoying a much better season than their rivals as they sit seventh in the league and have only conceded 25 goals this year. However, the potential signing of such a famous player would be a big attraction for los Verdiblancos.

Finally, a switch to Barcelona as a potential back up to Marc-André ter Stegen is also on the cards.

The Catalans have endured a tough season to date for their usual high standards as they sit eight points off the top in third and have conceded 34 goals in the league this year.

El Blaugrana have been very active in the free agent market the last two seasons due to their financial difficulties, so a move for the former United keeper may just attract them.

As we approach March, it is unlikely the player will sign a deal for a club this season, so it will be interesting to see what develops over the coming months in regard to a move back to La Liga for the former Spanish number one.

Newcastle may stop Ashworth from joining United at any price until this happens - David Ornstein

Newcastle United are not only concerned about the financial element of Manchester United target, Dan Ashworth’s compensation package to leave the club, but also the impact it could have on their summer transfer plans.

In a flurry of activity over the last week, Ashworth has asked to leave Newcastle, after agreeing a deal with Manchester United to become their new sporting director.

However, the Magpies will not let the former technical director go easily and have reportedly demanded a gigantic compensation package of over £20m, if he is to released out of his contract to start work at Old Trafford this year.

Naturally, the Red Devils have baulked at such a price and believe they can negotiate the fee down. While the formal talks take place, the Englishman has been officially placed on gardening leave.

However, journalist David Ornstein, speaking on the BBC’s Monday Night Club claimed, “the conversations I’ve had today suggest Newcastle are most sensitive about this coming summer window”.

“If they can block off Dan Ashworth from working for Man United and communicating with them during that period then beyond that perhaps things will be okay. The two points I have garnered are that they want the money to be right and they don’t want him working for Man United in this summer window”.

“Beyond that, he wouldn’t be privy to the finer details of the plans, even though he has spoken in the past about how they work on multiple windows in advance so he’ll have an incline but then everyone in this industry knows what everybody else is doing”.

This new information could mean that talk of having to wait to 2026 is not a likelihood but it may mean, regardless of the money United offer, Newcastle could well refuse to release him until the beginning of the new season at the earliest.

The Red Devils of course have experience of this when they lost their Chairman, Peter Kenyon, in October 2003 and he took over at rivals Chelsea the next month as Chief Executive Officer.

According to The Standard, Kenyon “made a significant impact in the transfer market by beating United to the signings of Arjen Robben, Michael Essien and Michael Ballack”.

Newcastle will most likely want to avoid the same scenario.

Having poached Ashworth from Brighton in 2022, they know the talent of the man they are losing and probably fear what he can do with his insight knowledge of their transfer plans.

The 52 year old is one of the most respected men in the business and United legend, Rio Ferdinand, recently stated, “I think he’s the best. He’s so calm, he’s so sure in what he’s doing. He’s so focussed, diligent, he knows the market”.

What is clear is that INEOS have got their man and Ashworth will be the next sporting director of Manchester United. However, recent complications and reports suggest that the Red Devils may have to wait until at least after the summer window to welcome their new recruit into the fold.

Both sets of United fans will be waiting with bated breath to see what happens next as this fascinating story unfolds.
