"Not a simple deal": Fabrizio Romano gives important update on Marcus Rashford's future

Manchester United have suffered a disappointing first half of the campaign with underperforming players leaving Erik ten Hag under pressure at Old Trafford.

Last year’s star man, Marcus Rashford, has been one of those yet to produce anything like the form he found in Ten Hag’s first season.

The United forward has only scored four times this season after his 30-goal-haul last time out.

He has also found himself in hot water with the boss after being spotted in a Northern Ireland nightclub the night before reporting ill for training.

United have since dealt with the matter but the future of the 26-year-old now looks insecure at the club.

Speaking on his Daily Briefing podcast, transfer-guru Fabrizio Romano says United might be tempted to cash in on the player but nothing will be decided before the summer.

“I think his future could be the subject of some discussion this summer, but it’s important to clarify that it’s not something that will be decided now. I’m sure we’ll start hearing stories in the next weeks and months, but at the moment Manchester United are not thinking about it,” he said.

Romano also spoke on the complications of moving on a player like Rashford but despite the complexities, headmits it will be an option for United.

“It’s also not easy at all to sign a player like Rashford – a big name at Manchester United, on a big salary and long-term contract.

It’s not a simple deal at all, so at the moment nothing is happening, nothing has been planned for the summer. In terms of possibility, yes, but it’s not something that’s been discussed or guaranteed yet,” he added.

Given United’s changes with the sporting structure at the club, Romano believes it will “take some time for United to decide their summer strategy” and expects staff to come on board before any players.

Rashford now faces a huge second half to the season and could be fighting to save his career at Old Trafford.

United have not confirmed whether he will be available for selection against Wolves on Thursday, a fixture in which he started on the bench last year due to another disciplinary matter before coming on to score the winner in a 1-0 win.

Ten Hag will be hoping for a similar outcome this week to fully put the situation to bed.

"Couldn’t believe...“: United players and coaches react strongly to Rashford’s latest antics - report

Senior members of the Manchester United dressing room are said to be “angry” at the latest controversy involving team-mate Marcus Rashford.

The 26-year-old missed training on Friday morning as Erik ten Hag’s squad were beginning preparations for the crucial trip to Newport County in the FA Cup. Rashford was too ill to report for duty, having only arrived back that morning after a trip to Belfast.

While this was sanctioned by the club, they were under the impression their forward would be returning to Manchester on Thursday. Instead, reports suggest Rashford went out Wednesday and Thursday night in the Northern Ireland capital, with sources indicating the player went on a ‘12-hour tequila bender‘ before arranging a private jet to fly him home at 7am on Friday morning.

Rashford was then made to train alone at the club’s training ground on Sunday while his team travelled to Newport County. United would win the game 4-2 in an exciting, if somewhat concerning, manner, confirming their place in the 5th round of the FA Cup.

The competition constitutes the last opportunity for the club to salvage some semblance of success this season, having already crashed out of the Champions League and Carabao Cup, while languishing in eighth place in the Premier League.

It’s likely for this exact reason why Rashford’s team-mates are believed to be so furious with the England international.

The Daily Mail reveals sources at Old Trafford say senior members of the dressing room are “unhappy” with his behaviour. “The players were told he was too ill to train, and then it came out that he’d been in the nightclub. They couldn’t believe that he would do that given the situation the club is in,” one source contended.

Similarly, these feelings appear to be mirrored by the club’s coaching staff. TalkSPORT reveals they are “concerned [that] Rashford’s lifestyle is having a negative impact on his career.”

During Ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford, Rashford has been involved in two more minor behavioural incidents. The first was being dropped after arriving late to a team meeting ahead of a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The second was earlier this season, after Rashford went out to a nightclub to celebrate his birthday following the dismal 3-0 defeat in the Manchester Derby. Ten Hag described this incident as “unacceptable” at the time but contended it was an “internal matter”, mirroring the words he tensely used in a pre-match interview at Newport County when pressed on the incident.

This latest controversy is on a different level to the previous two, however. Yet it appears to have already been dealt with by the club.

Following “showdown talks” between the player and club officials, including Ten Hag, United released a statement last night indicating Rashford had taken full “responsibility for his actions” and the matter had been “dealt with internally”. The forward is now back in training and in contention for Thursday night’s game against Wolves.

The expediency of this decision comes as a surprise considering the almost flagrant unprofessionalism Rashford displayed during the incident.

Ten Hag’s interviews and press-conferences during his near-twenty months at the helm of Old Trafford have been constantly dominated by messages about attitude and work ethic. For his star forward to have defiantly defied these principles, but face a minor slap on the wrists, feels an odd response.

One wonders if Anthony Martial and Mason Mount were fit and in form, or Antony wasn’t utterly useless, would the Dutch manager have acquiesced so easily to a situation which must have enraged him privately. Needs must hey Erik?

"New sense of impetus": INEOS feel-good factor sweeping through Old Trafford

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is being credited with positively shifting the mood around Old Trafford since his partial takeover was announced.

This is according to The Daily Mirror, who claim “Sir Jim Ratcliffe has only been to Manchester United’s training ground a couple of times but there has already been a change in the mood”.

INEOS gave United fans an early Christmas present when it was announced on Christmas Eve that they had completed a deal to buy 25% of the club.

While the club awaits ratification of the deal from the Premier League next month, it has also been reported that INEOS’ remit will extend beyond football matters, taking more direct control away from the Glazers.

The Mirror claim that this feel-good factor has also extended to the players.

“United players are enjoying training, insisting the sessions this week have never been better and the changes at the club have ‘put everyone on their toes'”.

“Ratcliffe has spoken to the players but did not read the riot act – it was more informal talks – but there is a new sense of impetus, drive and the atmosphere at Carrington is good. His lieutenant Dave Brailsford has also given a speech to the club’s football staff making it clear that they expect high standards – and it will be tough to get where they want to go”.

It has already been relayed here that both Ratcliffe and Brailsford left a very positive impression on staff when they met with them a few weeks ago.

United have only played twice in January, an FA Cup tie against Wigan and the Premier League clash against Tottenham a couple of weeks ago.

The players have been on a winter break and some went to Dubai to recharge their batteries.

“The mood is being credited partly to the players, partly to the manager Erik ten Hag and partly to INEOS who have been welcomed in by staff and supporters alike”.

“Insiders believe they have come back with a desire to reset and are absolutely determined to make the second half of the campaign better than the first”.

This will be music to the ears of many fans, who have also been left impressed by the contrast that INEOS have set with the Glazers to date. After meeting with supporters, Ratcliffe was described as “highly impressive”.

Nonetheless, the proof will be in the pudding. The Red Devils must start by putting away Newport in the cup this weekend and then by launching an assault on the Premier League to push towards the top four places.

"Some sort of dip": Roy Keane compares Klopp news to Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement

Former Manchester United captain, Roy Keane, has claimed that he is not surprised that Jurgen Klopp has announced he will leave Liverpool in the summer but he has queried the timing.

It was reported yesterday that the German would stand down as manager of Liverpool football club after eight seasons.

The coach claimed that “we aren’t young rabbits anymore” and that he would not have the required energy to start a ninth season in Merseyside.

The Liverpool Echo report that the Irishman stated, “He’s a character, we’ll miss him – the type of football he’ll play. But I’m not that shocked, the demand on those managers it takes its toll.”

The ITV pundit did question the timing of the announcement, however.

“There was a lot of chat about who might come in, a different challenge for Liverpool now is the timing,” Keane said. “The timing that the manager has made the decision and we’ll see the reaction there will be from this group of players, the timing is slightly different but we know what a brilliant manager Klopp is”.

The Anfield side are still competing on four fronts this season, so it seems a strange choice to announce such a momentous change for the club bang in the middle of it all.

The United legend also compared Klopp’s announcement to when Sir Alex Ferguson announced his original decision to retire in 2002, which he thankfully had second thoughts about.

“The timing is different,” added Keane. “The manager back at United did it at the start of the season and we were on the back of winning three titles in a row maybe that was some sort of dip. Subconsciously I thought it would’ve affected the dressing room at the time, we had experienced players, we thought we’d get on with it then he made the decision that he was coming back, we kind of just rolled with it.”

What is clear is that the former Borussia Dortmund coach will leave a massive hole at Liverpool and now they have the unenviable task of trying to replace him.

Manchester United fans know better than most the difference a top class manager can make.

The likes of Xabi Alonso and Roberto Di Zerbi have been linked to the soon-to-be vacant role but whoever takes on the role will have a mountain to climb to live up to the controversial German.

United target with a "higher vertical leap than Ronaldo" has lots to prove - The Athletic

Brian Brobbey is the latest Ajax player to be the subject of longing eyes from Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has been linked to Manchester United recently and is said to be keen on a move to England, albeit in the summer.

The Athletic have subsequently responded with an analysis of what type of player United may be getting if Ten Hag gets his way and the 21 year old makes the switch to Manchester.

“Blessed with a low centre of gravity and powerful thighs, he is a potent physical threat in the penalty area. Strong and pacy (but not lightning quick), he can be a powerful ball of muscle when barrelling through on goal. When he was 14, he was found to have a higher vertical leap than Cristiano Ronaldo”.

However, his physical dominance over Eredivisie defenders can come at a price according to the American outlet. “He knows how much stronger he is than the defenders he faces every week, meaning he has a tendency to ‘cheat’ himself in more frantic moments, relying on that strength to bail him out of
situations he wasn’t adequately focused on”.

This strategy is unlikely to work in England against stronger, faster and savvier defenders. The fact he lacks the sheer pace of Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho means he will need to reinvent himself to be a threat.

Statistics demonstrate he is a “useful focal point” for his side’s attack and likes to exchange simple passes with team-mates as he scores highly in link-up play and ball retention. “His back-to-goal game is impressive (again, when facing defenders in the Dutch league) and he has deceptively good hold-up play for his 5ft 10in (180cm) frame”.

“Brobbey can look like a goalscoring marvel. He’s a volume shooter: taking many attempts and — eventually — scoring a decent number of goals. He likes to do most of his work inside the penalty area”. This can be seen where he ranks incredibly highly statistically in both receptions in opposition box and shot volume.

The problem is, United don’t currently create a lot of shots. If they did, Rasmus Hojlund would most likely be on many more goals.

Furthermore, “his shot map for last season illustrates a clever penalty-area mover who can get into the six-yard box with pleasing regularity. How well he’ll do in front of goal when playing for a team who don’t dominate possession as well as Ajax remains to be seen”. United currently sit 7th in teams with the most possession in England.

Another potential weakness for Brobbey is the fact he is a “streaky” scorer. When on form he can seem one of the elite young attacking talents in Europe but when he is off the boil, he can be incredibly frustrating. United already have plenty of players who fit this particular bill.

The Athletic notes that this “inconsistency” and a proneness to pick up “niggly muscular injuries” has led several managers to discount him as a consistent starter.

There are also serious question marks over the striker’s ability and desire to press, which is in theory, a supposed hallmark of Ten Hag’s style as he aims for his side to be the best “transition team in Europe”.

The Athletic warns that while Brobbey has done well individually in a struggling Ajax team, where he has found the net 15 times in 26 games, you should treat these numbers cautiously. They note that seven of his fourteen goals have come in five recent games against bottom half opposition.

A series of Dutch legends such as Ronald Koeman and Marco van Basten have flagged up some serious concerns about the striker’s natural goal scoring instincts.

Brobbey is seen as a “talent to be an effective cog in an already well-oiled machine, capable of generating goalscoring chaos in a way few other players in the Netherlands can. It is harder to predict whether he can be a sparkplug in a malfunctioning engine, or whether it’s even reasonable to ask him to take on such a role”, The Athletic continues.

“Physically and technically, Brobbey is capable of the jump to a Premier League club”. However, if he were to be given the chance at Old Trafford to prove himself in England, “the onus would fall on him to show suitors he is more Kudus than Antony”.

With United already gambling on one expensive youth project in Rasmus Hojlund, it is far from certain that another in Brobbey is the answer Ten Hag is looking for.

"Ready to leave this summer": United linked with superstar striker who could lead INEOS revolution

Manchester United have been linked with a sensational move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

Ekrem Konur (ESPN) contends United are one of a number of clubs across Europe believed to be interested in the 25-year-old, including Chelsea and Real Madrid. The reporter reveals Osimhen is “ready to leave” Naples this summer as he plots his next move.

Napoli have suffered a downturn in form this season after the emotional high of their first Serie A win in thirty-three years last season.

Under Luciano Spalletti, Gli Azzurri established themselves as one of the best, and most effective, teams in Europe. They finished sixteen points clear of second-place Lazio in the league, only losing four games all season.

Osimhen was fundamental to this success. Thirty-one goals and four assists in thirty-nine appearances in all competitions made the Nigerian one of the most deadly strikers in Europe.

Spalletti would depart at the end of the season, however, to take on the Italian national team role. His replacement – Rudi Garcia – did not gel well with his new team, leading to a dramatic reversal in Napoli’s fortunes this year.

Garcia was sacked after just sixteen games and replaced by Walter Mazzarri in November.

Napoli have not fared much better with the managerial change, however. They languish in 9th in Serie A, twenty-one points behind leaders Juventus. Mazzarri also saw his side depart the Coppa Italia in the round-of-sixteen, courtesy of an embarrassing 4-0 loss to Frosinone.

Naturally, Osimhen’s form has mirrored his team’s.

Eight goals and two assists in eighteen matches is a reasonable return given the circumstances, but a long way from the heights of last season. It would still make the striker the top scorer at Old Trafford, however.

United are believed to be targeting a “top-class striker” this summer as part of the INEOS’ sporting team’s plans to overhaul Erik ten Hag’s squad. Only Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Burnley have scored fewer goals than United in the Premier League this season.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reported to want a new centre-forward at Harry Kane’s level to buttress this misfiring forward line. While this will not be possible, as Kane exists in a class of his own, Osimhen may constitute the next best thing who will be available in the summer.

The 25-year-old recently revealed he has “already made up my mind” over his next move this summer. He’s also believed to have a long-standing interest in the Premier League.

Unfortunately, he has referenced Didier Drogba as a hero of his with Chelsea reported to be at the front of the queue for his services. Similarly, Old Trafford officials want their new centre-forward to be able to play with Rasmus Hojlund, rather than instead of. As such, a traditional number nine in the mould of Osimhen may not fit this mould.

The Peoples Person wouldn’t put too much faith in this link, despite how exciting a move it would be.

United set to "step up" pursuit of Spanish international, would transform Ten Hag's midfield - report

Manchester United are said to have significant interest in Real Sociedad midfielder, Martin Zubimendi.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the sports journalist Dean Jones claimed, “there’s not really any part of the squad that is not under examination right now as they look towards the summer”, and while the centre back position has been discussed in the media, “also the centre of their midfield will change”.

Manchester United look to be largely inactive in the winter window as they wait for the Premier League’s ratification of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s deal to be part owner of the football club.

However, INEOS reportedly plan a big summer window of change and that is when interest in the Basque midfielder could escalate.

“They have got a few names already. Four or five names, to be honest, that they’re continuing to explore for the midfield. I think that they’ll also get involved in conversations around players like Zubimendi, who they have a level of interest in”.

“I think they might even step that up as we get through the season”.

GIVEMESPORT assert that “it’s understood that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready” to bring Real Sociedad’s Zubimendi to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window as the 24 year old has a £52m release clause in his contract.

United have a long-standing interest in the player as they had been linked to the player back in May last year when the club were left “impressed” after the Spaniard’s display against the Old Trafford side in the Europa League group stage in 2022.

However the Basque club would only agree to sell the player if his release clause was met.

Furthermore, Erik ten Hag reportedly sent scouts to watch Real Sociedad duo Martin Zubimendi and Takefusa Kubo during an October contest against Mallorca.

The San Sebastian native has been in good form for his local side, playing 20 La Liga games this season, scoring four goals and having one assist to his name to date.

With INEOS reportedly looking to get rid of Casemiro to clear up wage space and Financial Fair Play wiggle room, bringing in a younger player like Zubimendi, likely on significantly lower wages, could make a lot of sense to bolster the midfield department.
