Hindsight is 20-20: Why Erik ten Hag is not to blame for Man United's current crisis - opinion

We all know the arguments. On the one hand, Manchester United are breaking nearly a century’s worth of unwanted poor performance records this season, they are embarrassing to watch and the freefall can’t be allowed to continue. The worst players are those manager Erik ten Hag championed, he seems unable to fix things and must be sacked.

The other side of the argument is just as simple. What is happening to Ten Hag in his second season is exactly what happened to Louis van Gaal in his second season, to José Mourinho in his and to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about two seasons in as well (given he started and left halfway through a season). It can’t be the manager every time, the argument goes. It’s the toxic environment of the club, it’s the owners, it’s the players …

Team selections and deployment

Ten Hag has been nailed by fans this season for his over-reliance on Scott McTominay in midfield, but since mid-November, injuries have meant the only other options are Sofyan Amrabat, who has struggled to settle, and Kobbie Mainoo, a talented but untried 18 year old who himself missed a huge chunk of the season, and part of pre-season, with injury.

The minute Christian Eriksen returned and Mainoo had sufficient minutes for full match fitness, McTominay, despite being United’s leading goalscorer at the time, was consigned to the bench. It is hard to see what Ten Hag could have done differently where McTominay is concerned, apart from recall Donny van de Beek or promote another youngster such as Dan Gore.

It is indisputable that Ten Hag has made some bad calls. Yesterday he brought McTominay on at half-time for Mainoo and it proved to be a disaster. Both Forest’s goals came from runs into the box that should have been covered by the defensive midfielder. Mainoo probably would have been in the right position. McTominay was not.

But hindsight is a wonderful thing. At half time in a stale 0-0 when Forest had hadly forced a save out of Andre Onana, Ten Hag could have been forgiven for thinking Mainoo protecting the defence was somewhat overkill. Forest were offering so little, but United needed to create more chances themselves. He may have reasoned that McTominay has been a defensive mid at United for nearly six years and that even he can do the basics there, but he can also nick a goal. He can also offer height on corners and set pieces and make late runs into the box.

And if that version of McTominay had turned up, nobody would be lambasting the manager for the sub. The problem is, the worst version of McTominay turned up. He did not do the basics. Ten Hag rolled the dice and lost. But to say it was a bad decision is easy in retrospect.

Ten Hag has also been roundly criticised for his preferential treatment of winger Antony. Again, the Brazilian started yesterday and again, he was appalling. But Antony would have been on the bench had Rasmus Hojlund not fallen sick. Antony would have been on the bench had Anthony Martial not been sick. Antony could well have been on the bench had Jadon Sancho not decided to jeopardise his own career. Antony could well have been on the bench had Amad Diallo been match fit.

The fact is, when it comes to Antony, the only player that he has been preferred to, of late at least, is Facu Pellistri. Ten Hag may have his reasons for that, we do not know what he sees in training.

Injuries

The Athletic’s Carl Anka says that “Ten Hag will cite injuries decimating his team’s ability to play to their best, but it is a mitigation that can only go so far in a 2023-24 season where every Premier League club has suffered an increase in injuries.” This is surely wholly unfair. How many other clubs’ injuries have seen them have to start with 10 different centre back partnerships this season? And with a new goalkeeper, who will always take time to build up an understanding with his defence?

We saw Liverpool fall apart when Virgil van Dijk was injured last season. Just one player. We have seen City come off the rails when first Rodri and now Erling Haaland joined Kevin de Bruyne on the treatment table. Ten Hag has lost the whole spine of last season for much of this – notably Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, but so many others besides.

We can blame Ten Hag and say it is his tough training methods that has led to all these injuries, but this is speculation and most likely unfair.

Recruitment

Some fans argue that Ten Hag should be sacked for his failure in the transfer market alone. His signings, they say, have been a massive failure. The Telegraph’s Ian Whittle says “Antony is the £85m dud that will define Erik ten Hag’s tenure.” And of course it is an open secret that the Dutchman wanted the player on his team. But he surely did not expect the totally inept John Murtough (the supposed director of football at United) to spend £85 million to get him. If Murtough had paid a sensible amount – even £40 million, nobody would have had such high expectations of the Brazilian, and nobody would be nailing Ten Hag for wanting him.

The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell points out that United had valued the player at just £25 million and that “Ten Hag undoubtedly wanted to sign Antony, but sanctioning the outlay came from above.”

The same is true of Rasmus Hojlund. It was Murtough, not Ten Hag, who forked out £72 million for a player who had been told he could leave Atalanta for £50 million. This left no money for Ten Hag’s requested second striker, a more experienced player such as Mehdi Taremi of FC Porto. Indeed, Ten Hag reportedly wanted Harry Kane or Victor Osimhen initially and ended up with little more than an academy prospect in Hojlund. Is this his fault?

As for his other signings, Lisandro looked to be United’s best defender since Nemanja Vidic before his injury. Ten Hag is being slated for signing Casemiro when his legs have gone, but nobody was saying that this time last year when he was being heralded as the best midfielder in the world. Again, hindsight is a fine thing, but nobody expected the Brazilian to age so quickly – if indeed that is what has happened.

Andre Onana has had a dodgy start to his Old Trafford career but that was true of the likes of David de Gea and even the great Peter Schmeichel. Was Ten Hag wrong in choosing him to replace the woeful De Gea? He was shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or last season and none of us were objecting when he was selected. Hindsight.

Likewise, we were all excited to land Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount could yet still be an inspired signing, we do not know yet because of his injuries.

Ten Hag was also desperate to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong but the club pulled the plug and left him with the inept pair of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot. Murtough’s mind-blowingly outrageous overspending – and inability to sell Harry Maguire – left the Dutchman unable to sign the centre back he so desperately wanted, too.

And let us not forget, going back to McTominay, that Ten Hag tried to sell him, but Murtough messed up those negotiations as well, holding out for a ridiculous sum that the otherwise keen West Ham refused to pay.

On top of all this, there is there is the biggest question of all when it comes to recruitment: why was Ten Hag calling the shots in the first place and should he be blamed for decisions that should have come from a director of football?

Ten Hag himself virtually begged for a DoF in May this year at a presser. Laurie Whitwell again:

“It was put to him that the most important person at a club should be the manager, just like Sir Alex Ferguson before him at United and Pep Guardiola now at neighbours Manchester City. ‘I don’t know if that is true,’ Ten Hag said. ‘About City, (Txiki) Begiristain does a very…’

There was an interjection: ‘That club is built for Pep Guardiola.’

Ten Hag replied: ‘Yes but I think still, don’t underestimate the role of Begiristain.’”

Whitwell noted that “his repeated insistence on recognising the work of Begiristain, City’s director of football, felt telling.”

Other mitigating factors

It also seems fair just to mention that the fiasco over the club’s takeover must have made life difficult for the manager. There is uncertainty among staff and his CEO, Richard Arnold, has left the club.

The Glazers’ refusal to invest money in the club has meant that United are now nearly at the limits of financial fair play rules, where they could have had significantly more. This has led to the Wout Weghorst-type loan deals of last season and the unlikelihood that the Dutchman can strengthen his squad this January, despite there being an obvious, desperate and urgent need.

Ten Hag was also left high and dry by Richard Arnold’s botched handling of the Mason Greenwood saga. The manager would have been planning on integrating him into the side and the decision to loan him out came very late in the day. He then also had off-field issues with two other right wingers, Antony and Jadon Sancho, land one on top of another.

And finally, it was hard for anyone to foresee Marcus Rashford’s crash from his 30-goal world beating form of 2022-23 to his shocking form this term. Unless a manager is expected to have psychic powers, it is hard to see how Ten Hag can be held responsible for that.

None of these are excuses, they are simply facts.

Nobody really knows whether or not Erik ten Hag is the right man for the job at United. But what we do know is that many, if not all of the problems he faces were there before he joined and will be there after he has left. So in many ways, sacking him is not the answer right now. Allow him, and INEOS, time to perform the “open heart surgery” that interim manager Ralf Rangnick called it, and then judge him.

Graham Potter looked like an amazing manager at Brighton but clueless at Chelsea. Roberto de Zerbi looks like an amazing manager at Brighton now, but is this the opposite effect to United? A club built with an excellent structure, with a great sporting director (Dan Ashworth, now at Newcastle) making the job easy for the manager? Would De Zerbi, or anyone else, prosper in the vipers’ nest and improve things at United?

Italian ace opts to ignore United's advances and signs new deal at Inter

Inter Milan’s Federico Dimarco has signed a new deal and expressed his desire to stay at Inter Milan, despite interest from Manchester United.

This is according to Tuttomercatoweb, who relayed comments the right-back made to Inter Tv after putting pen to paper on a new contract at the Italian side.

Both United and Real Madrid were credited with interest in the player in the summer after the full back enjoyed a successful year, winning two trophies and reaching the Champions League final.

However, back in October, it was reported that the Serie A side had no intention of selling the player and subsequently offered him a new deal, which he has now signed.

The Milan-born defender’s contract now runs until 2027 and he is now very much first choice at the club. He played 50 times for Inter in all competitions last year and has already racked up 16 appearances this campaign. (All statistics via transfermarkt)

Reports had suggested that United were keen on the player and were willing to offer Anthony Martial as part of a deal to bring the defender to Old Trafford but such an opportunity seems impossible now.

Speaking to Inter’s official TV channel, Dimarco stated, “I’m actually happy with what I’m doing, the team’s objectives are more important. I’m happy with how we’re going, and we hope to continue like this”.

He added, “there have been many beautiful moments in these years spent together, if I have to think of one, I think of the Italian Cup final, after the victory against Juve, when I sang together with them”.

The right back seems very content in the north of his homeland and finished by asserting, “if I had to say something, I would tell them that they have to put up with me for a few more years”.

Hardly the words of a man who was ever itching for a move.

United will need to keep searching for a right back to improve depth and they have previously been linked to players such as Denzel Dumfries and Vanderson

Dimarco will no doubt be enjoying his season as the Nerazzurri sit top of Serie A and are safely qualified for the next round of the Champions League – the type of form United fans can only dream of right now, especially after yesterday’s soul-crushing defeat to Nottingham Forest.

“Focused on prawn sandwich brigade”: Maguire offers Ratcliffe advice on Old Trafford rebuild

Football finance expert, Kieran Maguire, has claimed that Manchester United should make the sensible choice and rebuild Old Trafford instead of simply giving the iconic stadium a makeover.

According to Football Insider, Maguire claimed that “it would be more sensible for Man United to build a new £2 billion stadium than it would be to renovate Old Trafford”.

The question over what to do with Old Trafford is even more pertinent when a week ago to the day, Sir Jim Ratcliffe was confirmed as the new part owner of the football club.

According to a previous report by Football Insider, the British billionaire is weighing up whether to expand the current stadium to 90,000 seats or opt for a complete rebuild.

The academic believes that not rebuilding the stadium will “will ignore the needs of United’s ‘hardcore’ fanbase. My fear is that if additional money is spent on the existing stadium, it will be mainly focused on the prawn sandwich brigade”.

Maguire goes on to explain that normal match-going fans who have had to put up with “the leaking roof, inadequate catering facilities, archaic toilets” would continue to be marginalised if the stadium is only refurbished.

Were the current stadium to have its attendance extended, “the focus will instead be on building an extra four or five thousand additional seats and trying to ensure that those are at prime prices”.

This is exactly what the INEOS group will want to avoid. The Glazers have been seen for years as only interested in themselves and how to commercialise the club whilst ignoring fans’ needs. A redevelopment that only panders to the richest and ignores the everyday followers would be disastrous and no departure from the American family’s regime.

The finance guru backed up his assertions by pointing to the examples of other top clubs and how new stadiums have breathed life into their projects.

“We’ve seen the transformation happen at Spurs. We’ve also seen the work being undertaken at Real Madrid and Barcelona”.

Manchester United have certainly slipped behind the Spanish giants in recent years and due to the Glazers’ criminal mismanagement of the club, are in serious danger of falling behind teams like Tottenham in the long run, both on and off the pitch.

“While Old Trafford is iconic and historic, it’s not fit for purpose. A 21st-century stadium for one of the most iconic clubs on the planet is the sensible thing to do,” Maguire asserts.

The academic’s opinion is also mirrored by the chief architect of the Red Devils’ investigation into what to do with the stadium. Populous CEO Chris Lee, whose company was also behind Spurs’ new stadium, also claims that “a new stadium will be the most ‘cost-effective’ option for Ratcliffe”.

The Peoples Person relayed the news that Lee believes that “the building is reaching the end of its natural life – the cabling, the electricity supplies, everything is nearing its sell by date. And the interiors are very cramped and difficult in places”.

Moreover, building a new stadium on adjacent land to the current arena is viable and there is the scope to do “something really innovative and exciting. There would be no space constrictions”.

The general consensus amongst experts seems to be quite clear. Rebuild Old Trafford to give the everyday fans and club what they deserve. A 21st century stadium that can be best in class. What better way for the INEOS group to set itself apart from the Glazer regime?

"A special player": Forest boss sings praises of United ace before crucial clash

New Nottingham Forest manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, has been incredibly complimentary of his compatriot and Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes.

According to The Mirror, the new Forest boss claimed that Fernandes is “a big player, a special player”.

“I don’t want to say too much but he’s definitely one of the best players in the Premier League. He’s so competitive,” the 49 year old said.

The coach waxed lyrical over the player’s desire to win and whilst admitting it is not everything in football, it is “something I think all professionals should have”.

The Portuguese international has been one of, if not the best signing United have made in the post-Ferguson era and had a wonderful first couple of seasons for the club, as he took to English football like a duck to water.

While his statistics are not as impressive as they once were, the 29 year old is still an absolutely integral part of the side. This could be seen in the team’s first goal versus Villa when he won the ball back by pressing high up the pitch and played a great ball into Marcus Rashford, who could square for Alejandro Garnacho to finish.

However, the former Sporting Lisbon player has faced a massive amount of criticism from a variety of pundits about his leadership credentials and his visible complaining on the pitch.

The Peoples Person has recently relayed statistics that show Bruno Fernandes has created 100 chances from open play in the league this calendar year and this is 29 more than Mo Salah in second place.

Espirito Santo admitted that the media is split on the player but he went on to speak of the pride the Portuguese nation has over the midfielder.

“People in Portugal have a lot of respect for him. He plays for the national team, he’s captain of Manchester United and, as Portuguese, we are proud of him,” he said.

“Especially to the young generation, he represents a lot of good. Not only him, but Cristiano (Ronaldo) and all of these players – we’re very proud they’re doing so well around the world.”

The Forest boss was also quick to highlight that the Red Devils are much more than Fernandes and the rest of the team is just as effective. He was also wary of United’s character in their comeback victory over Aston Villa and knows his Forest side will need to be at their best to get a result.

Manchester United fans will certainly be hoping their captain can live up to Espirito Santo’s billing and put in a display to keep his critics quiet, just for a little bit at least.

Greenwood offered Messi's iconic shirt to lure him to Camp Nou - report

Barcelona are looking to land controversial Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood and are prepared to pull out all the stops to do so.

According to The Sun, the Catalan giants are prepared to pay £40m to secure the services of the 22 year old.

The England international has adapted very well to Spanish football and is certainly pulling up trees at Getafe.

The coach of the Madrid-based team, Jose Bordalas, has always been very complimentary of the forward and claimed the side were “happy and content” with how the loan has worked out so far.

The striker has played 14 games and created 16 chances so far. He has also been productive as he has scored three goals and assisted four more for the Spanish side.

The Peoples Person relayed recently that Getafe have been so impressed with the attacker that they want to break their transfer record and sign him up.

However, other top Spanish sides such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid are also apparently circling.

The Sun has added a new layer of interest to the story by asserting boldly that “Barcelona are ready to offer Mason Greenwood Lionel Messi’s iconic No 10 shirt as part of a £40 million summer transfer swoop”.

“Now Barcelona want to use it to help lure Bradford-born Greenwood to the Nou Camp”.

Interestingly, the article also asserts that the player still retains a hope of returning to Old Trafford one day but they admit this is unlikely.

United academy graduate, Ravel Morrison, has also recently thrown his weight behind a potential return for Greenwood to the Red Devils and until it is confirmed one way or another, there will be constant speculation about the topic.

What is for sure is, if Greenwood is not welcome back at the club, taking up the number ten shirt at one of the biggest clubs in world football would surely be hard to turn his nose up at.

No returns: Erik ten Hag says tomorrow's squad will be "similar" to the last one

Erik ten Hag says there will not be many additions to his squad ahead of Manchester United’s trip to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest tomorrow.

Asked about players returning from injury, the boss said “It will be a similar squad as we had against Aston Villa.

“Mid-January we expect many players back. Mason [Mount], Casemiro, Martinez, Malacia, so we expect Harry Maguire, of course. We expect many players to return in January.”

The manager was attending the pre-match press conference ahead of the game and was asked if he had spoken to the INEOS team who will take control of football business at United following Sir Jin Ratcliffe’s 25% investment in the club.

“I didn’t have the time to speak with them but it will come & I look forward (to it). They want to work with me, I want to work with them. We’ll have conversations, meetings, so we will see.”

Asked if he expects them to be regulars at United’s training complex at Carrington, he replied:

“I’m focused on the game so far, so I said no, in this moment I don’t want to have distractions but in the coming days, weeks, there will be time for this, and then I’ll know more.”

The manager was pressed on whether the change in structure will motivate his team.

“We always want to win, it doesn’t matter who is the leader. We are appointed here in this area, we need a winning culture no matter who is in the lead, no matter who is the owner. But, of course, owners can inspire you.”

Ten Hag was also asked whether Andre Onana would be allowed to join up late with the Cameroon squad for AFCON in order to play against Wigan in the FA Cup.

“We’re talking, we have good relationships with all the federations,” he responded. “It’s also about Sofyan (Amrabat) and Hannibal.” It is interesting to note that he did not mention Amad Diallo, who is expected to be named in the Ivory Coast squad.

United’s match against the in-form Forest kicks off at 5.30pm tomorrow.

Picture: Teenage darts sensation pays homage to his United hero in social media post

Luke Littler, the teenage dart sensation, is a huge Manchester United fan and is not afraid to show it.

The 16 year old has caused waves in the sport by racing into the fourth round of the PDC World Darts Championship.

The United fan will be aiming to go even further in the tournament but according to The Sun, has already “bagged” £35,000 for his work so far.

However, what will be of more interest to Red Devils’ fans is what Littler wants to do after the tournament.

The youngster claimed, “for Christmas, I got stuff for my Xbox, a controller, some gift cards and two tickets for the Manchester United stadium tour. So I will go to that after the Worlds. I’ve never done Tour before. Just watched a few games there”.

To compete at the highest level of your sport at the tender age of 16 not only requires extraordinary ability but also total confidence. Littler didn’t disappoint with his next comment.

When asked if he would be going on the stadium tour with the Sid Waddell Trophy, he retorted, “hopefully I’ll show them how to win one”.

Having only been born in 2007, Littler would have been six years old when his side last won the Premier League and a mere one year old when they last lifted the Champions League.

The darts sensation has also demonstrated his love for the club by celebrating like Marcus Rashford. After winning his match on Wednesday night to secure his passage to the next round, he “pointed his finger on his head like the forward does every time he scores a goal for the Red Devils”.

Littler posted a photo of his celebration on Instagram alongside one of Rashford to make it clear to all he was emulating his hero.

The post has already attracted over 17,000 likes and a huge amount of comments from his 55,000 followers.

He joins the growing list of celebrity United fans including A-listers like Rory Mcllroy and Julia Roberts.

"He can leave Man United": Fabrizio Romano gives update on exciting youngster

It’s that time of the year when teams with African players start sweating about losing their marquee talents to the national team.

The African Cup of Nations begins January 11th and Manchester United have a few cases of their own whose future is becoming clearer.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Hannibal Mejbri will not be going to the AFCON with Tunisia.

It is because the club is in the process of sorting out a loan move for the player and all interested parties want him to be available for the January/February period.

The three clubs mentioned are Olympique Lyon, Sevilla, and Freiburg from France, Spain, and Germany respectively.

Mejbri is expected to sign a contract extension before leaving, indicating that United see a future for him at the club.

Therefore, a loan move makes sense, since United are already out of two competitions so the fixture list isn’t going to be as daunting.

Furthermore, in Casemiro, Mason Mount, and Sofyan Amrabat, the numbers in midfield are about to be beefed up so the opportunities for youngsters will dry up.

After spending last season on loan in the Championship, it is a mark of the midfielder’s growth that first-division clubs in three different countries are taking an interest in his services.

With Casemiro’s advancing age, Amrabat’s loan unlikely to be made permanent, and Scott McTominay’s future in perennial doubt, a window could open for the Tunisian next season.

United would undoubtedly appreciate his commitment to making it at United by withdrawing from the Tunisian national team.

Now it is up to the player to impress at his loan club, whichever it might be, till the end of the season so he can return in the summer as a legitimate midfield option at the club.

United sitting “in first place” for one of the hottest young stars in Europe - report

Manchester United are in pole position to sign Joao Neves from Benfica, but any deal may be about to get quite a bit more expensive.

This is according to reports from two Portuguese sources, O Jogo and Correio da Manhã.

O Jogo state that Man United are in “first place” to sign the talented young midfielder but there is a hitch.

Benfica are intending to offer the 19 year old a new deal which will increase his release clause from €120m to €150m.

Moreover, Neves will expect to see an increase in his current wages too. The player also only recently signed a new deal in August to reflect his strong performances and to fend off a variety of circling clubs, which includes the Red Devils.

The talks with his agent Jorge Mendes are ongoing, and there’s optimism that a deal will be reached for him to sign a new deal as soon as the beginning of 2024.

Correio da Manhã add to the story by claiming that the midfielder has no desire to exit in January but gives United fans a glimmer of hope by asserting the Old Trafford side are the “most committed” to signing the player.

The paper reports that the youngster has “closed the door” to a winter exit and wants to continue his development in the Portuguese league.

The central midfielder believes he hasn’t fulfilled his true potential yet and he is currently at the best place to do so.

It is little wonder as his side are sitting second, one point behind city rivals, Sporting Lisbon and despite a poor Champions League campaign, have qualified for the next stage of the Europa League where they will take on Toulouse.

The Peoples Person has relayed similar information in the past on the Portugal international when Catalan papers suggested that Barcelona believe that his agent, Jorge Mendes, is obsessed with bringing the youngster to the Premier League.

Should such a release clause be agreed in any new deal, it is hard to see any other league being able to afford it.

Therefore, for United fans there is mixed news. The good is that the club lead the race for the player but the bad is any deal would not happen to at least the summer, if even then. Additionally, if any agreement were to take place, it would probably be a massive outlay of around €150m.

Whether INEOS would sanction such a deal is questionable as The Peoples Person relayed that the chemicals company is unwilling to make the mistakes of the past and splurge huge money on players.

No doubt there will be many more twists and turns in the road in any potential deal for Neves in the future.

7 Clearances, 3 Interceptions: Talented United loanee puts in valiant effort despite derby heartbreak

Will Fish put in a brave effort at the heart of the Hibernian defence, but he could not stop a last-gasp winner for bitter rivals, Hearts, yesterday.

The Manchester-born defender has been an ever-present in the Hibs first eleven and of all Manchester United’s loanees this season, he is playing the most football by far.

The fruitful loan continues to prosper as despite the loss, the 20 year old will have gained valuable experience from such a tense and dramatic game.

The match started off in frenetic fashion as both sides were awarded a penalty for handball within the first 15 minutes of action. However, both clubs hit the post with their efforts and the game remained at 0-0 by half-time.

The second half saw Fish’s Hibs get on top slightly and a rapid counter attack was set up after the United academy player won a header in dominating fashion to spring a lightning quick break. However, striker Dylan Vente was denied by the Hearts keeper.

The home side pushed for a winner at Easter Road but it was the Tynecastle side that found one in late fashion.

Hearts’ captain, Lawrence Shankland, ran at the Hibs defence and despite Fish’s efforts to close his man down, the Scot curled in a wonderful top corner finish in the 93rd minute. This understandably sparked wild celebrations from the team in maroon and white.

Nonetheless, the Manchester born player should be proud of his efforts. Sofascore gave him a 7.2 rating, which is impressive in a game of this magnitude for one so young and when you consider Hearts are currently the third best team in Scotland, after Celtic and Rangers.

The youngster stood up tall for his team and was one of the most highly ranked players in his side.

He played the full 90 minutes and made a mammoth seven clearances to keep the Hearts’ attack at bay. Fish also blocked the ball twice and made three crucial interceptions. He also showed great composure by only giving away two fouls all game and not receiving a yellow card in such a competitive derby.

Despite only making one tackle in the match, he was a wall as no player was able to dribble past him.

Fish was not so strong in his duels though as he only won 50% of his four ground efforts and an unusually low 40% of his five aerial ones. This is typically an aspect of the game he excels at.

The United man was able to contribute offensively as he successfully dribbled the ball forward and was credited with making one key pass in the game. However, his pass rate accuracy of 66% was not his best night’s work.

All this means Hibs remain sixth in the table, while their cross-city rivals moved up to third place. They now lie eight points behind their neighbours.

Fish and company will be aiming to bounce back next Tuesday when they welcome Motherwell to Easter Road.

Despite the tough loss in a tight encounter, the United loanee certainly proved his worth to his side and from a United perspective, picked up more valuable experience in professional football.

"The common denominator": Shearer has no doubt who is to blame for United's problems

BBC sports pundit, Alan Shearer, has claimed that the vast majority of Manchester United’s problems stem from the ownership of the Glazer family.

Writing in The Athletic, the Newcastle legend claims that a football club is just like any other business and “what happens at the top of the organisation filters down to the shop floor”.

The all-time leading Premier League goal scorer stated that “uncertainty has taken root, on and off the pitch” and “ultimately, players want to run onto the pitch with their minds clear and from the outside looking in, fogginess has been ingrained for a very long time” at the Old Trafford side.

Shearer states that players “loathe” uncertainty, and while it remains to be seen what control INEOS will have at the club whilst the Glazers are still there, it is a step in the right direction. He claimed that players “sitting in the dressing room before a match, you want to know exactly what your role is and feel confident in your ability to fulfil it. You want to look around and know the players sitting near you all feel the same”.

“The common denominator” to foster such a culture is clearly the owner, according to the former England international.

“When that vibe is persistently gloomy or divisive, it seeps into your bones”.

Shearer claims that if owners give players the best of everything, it is much more difficult for them to “shy away from responsibility”. This is something numerous United teams have been guilty of over the years as they have thrown successive managers under the bus.

The Newcastle legend tells a story about his former coach, the late-great Sir Bobby Robson who once told his side, “If I give you my wrist, you’ll take my arm, if I give you my arm, you’ll take my shoulder”. For too long this culture has thrived at Old Trafford.

Shearer draws a comparison to his own spells at Newcastle United and Blackburn. He claims to have had a “brilliant owner” in Jack Walker at Blackburn and it was “similar” at St James’ Park under Sir John Hall, Douglas Hall and Freddy Shepherd. However, the player also had some experience of the toxicity he claims exists at United under the Floridian family.

Describing when he returned to Newcastle as caretaker manager in 2009 he stated, “it was toxic, a total shambles and relegation was staring us in the face. Negativity was tangible; you could smell it and feel it, players had been bombarded with different ideas and their heads were swimming and discipline had frayed. The tone was dictated by Ashley’s appointments and decisions”.

Shearer finally backs up his point on the ownership by taking swipe at the transfer policy that saw the club spend so much on a player like Antony and the mishandling of the Mason Greenwood situation demonstrate a “lack of clarity and leadership (that) eats away at the fabric of a place”.

United fans will be hoping that the news of INEOS’ investment and the fact the chemicals company is already involved in transfer and managerial decisions points to the fact that, at last, there is a genuine change in direction.

Video: Onana’s crazy celebration tells significant story about United’s dressing room

Manchester United have had a very challenging season, but a stirring second half comeback win against high-flying Aston Villa has allowed fans to be a little more positive for a while at least.

After two goals from the electric Alejandro Garnacho, the moment every United fans has been waiting for arrived.

A corner was swung in and the Villa defence could only clear it to Rasmus Hojlund, who hit a sweet first time strike right into the corner of the net.

The 20 year old boyhood fan ran to the Stretford End, visibly holding back tears to celebrate his first Premier League goal. As his teammates left him to return to their positions, the Dane let out a Viking roar which would have been probably as much relief as joy.

Old Trafford erupted and nobody was excited as United’s eccentric goalkeeper, Andre Onana.

Onana, like Hojlund, was an expensive summer signing that has faced a plethora of criticism since he joined the club. However, one thing you cannot blame “the boss” for having is a lack of passion.

Echoing scenes from the last gasp victory versus Brentford in October, the Cameroonian keeper can be seen in a social media video running all the way from his goal to celebrate passionately at the Stretford End with his teammates.

Many pundits have taken delight in stating that there is no togetherness at the club and a lack of leadership in the team. While this may be hard to argue against sometimes, many United fans will point to some clear examples of a side that despite their massive struggles, are still together.

Scott McTominay has recently stated that despite reports, there is not the toxicity in the dressing room of other years. Moreover, Bruno Fernandes’ decision to hand over his penalty to Marcus Rashford and his player of the match award to Jonny Evans does not paint the picture of a team at war with one another.

Even recently, Raphael Varane could have selfishly taken the credit for his player of the match award against Liverpool after a long time out of the team. However, the World Cup winner instead, decided to credit all of the backline for the award in an instagram post.

Wins like last night will go far to dispel the idea that the team lacks unity.

Manchester United fans will hope the media will not have another chance to sharpen their knives after the final game of 2023, away to Nottingham Forest this coming Saturday.

Ten Hag may need to reassess his transfer strategy given this incredible stat from Aston Villa win - opinion

Manchester United academy graduates proved to be the driving force behind their team’s 3-2 comeback victory over Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

While United went 2-0 down in the first half after conceding two soft goals, the team picked themselves up fairly soon after, ramping up their attacking efforts and scoring three goals in the second half to make an unlikely comeback and thereby end what has been a poor run of form.

Eight United academy graduates featured in the game, with some of them making all the difference as United clinched three points.

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jonny Evans, and Kobbie Mainoo all started against Villa, while Hannibal Mejbri, Scott McTominay, Dan Gore, and Willy Kambwala all came off the bench.

At the heart of United’s comeback was Garnacho, who showed his clinical finishing ability.

While the 19 year old’s goal soon after the second-half kick-off was ruled offside, he continued to show mental resilience, not allowing his disappointment to get the best of him.

The Argentine’s grit paid off as he scored two goals to draw United level with 19 minutes left to play.

Mainoo was another decent performer, showing composure in the midfield to aid United’s buildup play, while Rashford showed his desire to solidify his place back in the starting lineup with an aggressive attacking display.

Although United’s vulnerability in defence during the first half certainly raised a few eyebrows, veteran centre-back Jonny Evans was instrumental in preventing the home side from conceding further goals.

Evans’ goal-line block was one of several occasions when the 35 year old came to United’s rescue, proving that he still has what it takes to provide stability in defence.

While Hannibal, Gore and Kambwala were all late substitutes, they all showed composure by retaining the ball and shutting down the Villa attack in order to hold on to claim the victory.

If there’s one thing that was proven in what could potentially be United’s turning point this season, it’s that there is plenty of talent from United’s academy that Erik ten Hag can draw from in order to build a highly-capable squad.

With so many academy graduates excelling and numerous recent transfers continuing to struggle, perhaps Ten Hag should reassess his transfer strategy while also reconsidering his squad selection going forward.

United plotting swoop for dazzling 20-yo taking his league by storm - report

Manchester United are one of the parties keen on completing a transfer swoop for PSV Eindhoven star Johan Bakayoko.

It’s understood that Erik ten Hag is keen on acquiring attacking reinforcements.

To say the United forwards have struggled to put the ball into the back of the net this season would be a massive understatement.

United have scored the second least goals in the Premier League – only 18.

The Red Devils have failed to score in their last four matches. The last time this happened was in the autumn of 1930.

In particular, the right-wing position has been a major area of weakness all term. Antony has yet to register a goal or an assist this campaign.

With each passing game, the Brazilian appears to be a big-money flop United could find themselves stuck with.

Compound this with the fact that Jadon Sancho has missed months of football due to suspension and it’s clear Ten Hag has a problem on his hands.

Marcus Rashford has previously been tasked with playing in that position but just like Antony, struggled to have an impact.

Ten Hag’s last remaining hope may likely be Amad Diallo who recently made his return to team training after picking up an injury during pre-season.

According to SPORT1 journalist Christopher Michel, the 20-time English champions are interested in Johan Bakayoko.

“Manchester United have their eye on Johan Bakayoko. The 20-year-old has impressed on the right wing in Eindhoven and has strong stats with four goals and 13 assists in 27 competitive matches.”

“His market value is estimated at 40 million euros.”

During Arsenal’s clash vs. PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, Bakayoko did well and was a constant headache for the Gunners’defence.

The 20-year-old’s strengths lie in his incredible dribbling ability and knack for fashioning chances for others on the pitch.

He boasts of an amazing pace and a wonderful left foot. Bakayoko is also very technically gifted and can hold up the ball well if required.

Ratcliffe wants magical 20-yo Ligue 1 star to replace Antony at United - report

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is hoping to use his connections in French football to take Lyon’s, Rayan Cherki, to Old Trafford in 2024.

This is according to footbaltransfers.com, who claim they have been told that “Ratcliffe would like to bring Cherki to Old Trafford in 2024”.

The 20 year old is someone the Red Devils have been watching a while, but it is claimed that Ratcliffe’s ownership of French club Nice will give United an edge over rivals to secure the youngster’s services.

The Peoples Person relayed back in November that Manchester United would likely need to go head-to-head with Premier League rivals, Newcastle United, if they wanted to sign the talented player.

The French forward can play numerous positions across the front line having played attacking midfielder and right winger this season.

Whilst he has not scored a goal yet this season, he does have two assists to his name.

The outlet claims that “Cherki has mostly played in a No.10 position for Lyon this season, but he would likely be used on the right flank if he does join Man Utd, due to the presence of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount.”

What is clear is that Manchester United need help in this area of the pitch.

Mason Greenwood has been loaned out to Getafe and despite some calls to bring back the Englishman, it is unlikely Ratcliffe and INEOS would want to give themselves the PR headache, especially so early into their new regime.

Moreover, Jadon Sancho’s exile and likely sale, coupled with Antony’s appalling form, has left the Red Devils embarrassingly short of right wing options.

As the winter window rapidly approaches, the club needs new attacking threats and has been linked to strikers such as Timo Werner, Serhou Guirassy and Donyell Malen.

However, it is unlikely that the Red Devils will have many funds available despite Ratcliffe’s Christmas Eve takeover announcement, so it is probable any move for Cherki may have to wait until the summer.

"Do not expect...": Sir Jim Ratcliffe has decided his transfer strategy at United - report

There is euphoria around Manchester United after boyhood fan Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25% stake in the club was confirmed.

The INEOS chief penned a heartfelt statement upon completion and with him taking control of sporting matters completely, there is hope again at Old Trafford.

However, fans might have to temper expectations a bit, if recent reports are to be believed.

The Telegraph reports that INEOS has learned from its past transfer mistakes at other clubs and “huge transfer splurges” should not be expected at United.

It is a pertinent point, considering the aimlessness with which they approached their first few months at Switzerland’s FC Lausanne Sport and France’s OGC Nice.

Particularly at Nice, it looked like the transfer team mainly relied on contacts back in England to sign players whose peak was behind them.

Players like Kasper Schmeichel and Aaron Ramsey were purchases which prompted fans of the club to roll their eyes at the transfer strategy.

However, since those gaffes, INEOS has learned its lesson, with a proper sporting structure created at the club, headed by one of football’s highest-rated upcoming directors, Florent Ghisolfi.

As a result, after some initial discontent among Nice fans, the pivot is now paying off as the club sits second in the table, just five points behind giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Therefore, while the report that INEOS won’t make huge transfer splurges might not be received well at first glance, it could be exactly what United need.

After blowing through a billion pounds in a decade with scattergun recruitment, perhaps a measured policy of shrewd transfers is exactly what the club needs.

Ed Woodward once deemed Old Trafford as an “adult version of Disneyland”. It’s about time Manchester United got back to being a football club.

Sky’s claim about Glazers' ongoing future at United will enrage fans

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has no formal agreement in place to buy more than the 25% of the club he currently has.

Manchester United fans received an early present on Christmas Eve when it was announced that Ratcliffe’s 25% partial takeover was official.

However, according to Sky Sports, there is “no formal agreement for Jim Ratcliffe to buy more Glazer shares in the future”.

It was assumed by many that the INEOS billionaire would not have entered into such an agreement without some sort of guarantee of a pathway to future ownership of the club.

However, this does not seem to be the case.

Sky Sports claim that if the billionaire were to want more control at the club, “under stock exchange rules he would have to offer that to all shareholders”, before being able to take the necessary steps.

Ratcliffe has already made his first appointments by welcoming Sir Dave Brailsford and Jean-Claude Blanc to Man United’s UK club board.

Moreover, United are very shortly expected to appoint a new director of football, with names such as Paul Mitchell and Dan Ashworth discussed.

Many fans will be worried however about the Glazers maintaining control and The Peoples Person commented recently that with the announcement of the European Super League’s legality, this could well result in the American family deciding to stay on to milk the club further of any future profits.

However, Sky Sports do claim that “Ratcliffe has right of first refusal if Glazers do decide to sell any more shares”.

In addition, sources close to the deal have told The Telegraph that while the business and footballing side are “inextricably linked”, “Jim isn’t going to do a deal like this and then have his hands tied”.

This will ease Man United fans’ worries, as the worst case scenario would be a lame duck Ratcliffe organization that takes all the blame, while the Glazers continue to drain money away from the club.

Consequently, many fans will hope that in the not too distant future, the INEOS chief will make more public statements about his future intentions in regard to buying a larger stake in the club. Until he does, the shadow of the Glazers will continue to loom over the Mancunian side.

4 goals, 3 assists: this Ten Hag reject has outscored United’s whole forward line this season

Former Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga scored for Nottingham Forest against Bournemouth on Sunday, continuing to show fine form for his new club.

Elanga left Old Trafford for Nottingham Forest in July, with Man United reportedly receiving £15 million for the 21 year old.

While the Swedish international impressed as a substitute for United last season, even providing an assist in the 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford, it was ultimately determined that there would be no place for the up-and-coming winger in United’s lineup this season.

Still, given his impressive performances this season, it could be argued that allowing Elanga to leave United may have been a grave error, especially given the team’s lack of goals.

As reported by The Peoples Person, United have failed to score in their past four matches in all competitions; their longest goalless streak since November 1992.

In stark contrast to his former teammates, Elanga has been clinical in front of goal this season.

Elanga’s first goal for his new club was monumental, being the winner in a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, before scoring against West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion. (Transfermarkt)

He has also proven to be strong in support for Forest, providing two assists in a 2-2 draw with Luton Town.

On Saturday, Elanga yet again proved his worth.

While Forest lost 2-3 to Bournemouth, it was Elanga who scored to provide his team with a 1-0 lead early in the second half.

But while United appeared to have lost out on some significant talent, perhaps the most alarming development is the fact that Elanga does not appear to regret “downgrading” to a smaller club.

“At the end of the day I have to think about myself and would I want to stay another year coming in and out from the bench or be a starter at a team on the rise, improving and getting better,” Elanga reflected, adding that, “I have not regretted that decision one bit.”

While Elanga’s strong performance this season shows his personal career growth, it is also indicative of a larger problem at United, with Ten Hag’s players appearing to underperform no matter what lineup is selected.

Perhaps Ten Hag’s troubles with start to subside once several key players return from injury.

Former loanee Wout Weghorst blames Ten Hag for scoring drought at United

Former Manchester United loan signing Wout Weghorst has blamed Erik ten Hag for his struggles at Old Trafford last season.

Weghorst joined United temporarily for the second part of the 2022/23 campaign after Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious departure.

United paid Besiktas a small fee to part with the Dutchman’s services.

However, the striker scored just two goals for the Red Devils. He struggled to make an impact in terms of putting the ball into the back of the net, but he earned plaudits for his work rate and relentless defensive effort.

Weghorst also doubled down as a playmaker in some games, most notably at the Camp Nou against Barcelona.

When his loan tenure came to an end, United decided not to make his stay permanent.

He is currently plying his trade in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim.

Weghorts spoke to the media and said, “They were super successful months in which we hardly lost. I was also very important for the team, as both a focal point of play and hard-working link between midfield and attack.”

“Only my goals were lagging behind. That gnawed at me and was the reason why I lost my starting place.”

“The Premier League is by far the toughest league in the world, with the best defenders. But we were rarely the dominant side creating chances. And the way we played was also different from what I was used to.”

The 31-year-old added, “‘In Germany and Turkey, the teams always played for me. I was the end of the line, while at United I mainly had to ensure that others could excel. I think I managed that very well. But whichever way you look at it, I would have liked to score much more often.”

This term, he has managed four goals in 12 league appearances for Hoffenheim. Meanwhile, to say the current forwards available to Ten Hag have been struggling would be an understatement.

BBC presenter rips into United stars for disgraceful reaction to youngster’s error

BBC Radio 5 presenter, Mark Chapman, has lambasted Manchester United players’ reactions to the second goal they conceded versus West Ham.

The 20-times English champions lost their eighth Premier League game of the season in a convincing 0-2 loss to David Moyes’ West Ham.

It means United fans will be tucking into their Christmas dinner with their side sitting in eighth and with a goal difference of minus five. Yum.

It led to pundits such as Peter Schmeichel claiming he still doesn’t know what the supposed plan was against the Hammers.

Chapman however, took exception to one detail in particular.

According to The Daily Mail, the presenter “hit out at the United players while discussing the second goal with pundit Mark Warburton and the way they reacted to teenager Kobbie Mainoo who was at fault for the goal”.

Chapman stated, “I’m just watching the TV pictures of the aftermath, and he took it well did Kudus, but the ball was given away by Kobbie Mainoo, and that can happen to a young player, it just rolled under his foot”.

It seemed particularly unfortunate as youth products, Kobbie Mainoo and Willy Kambwala, were the only bright sparks of the defeat. The young French centre back was especially impressive on his first ever first team performance after being thrown into the deep end due to Raphael Varane’s injury.

Chapman went on to claim, “He’s (Mainoo) there biting his shirt, knowing that he’s the one who has made the mistake, and the player that goes up to him to give him a little tap and go ‘right, come on’ is Kambwala, the centre half who is 19 and is making his debut.

“Not one of the senior players, the young lad who is making his debut!'”

Warburton also agreed that the United players’ response would be of great concern for Erik ten Hag.

This is not the first time, nor most likely the last, this edition of Man United has been called out for a lack of leadership. Former player Paul Scholes was left baffled by the team’s inability to control itself in the 3-3 draw with Galatasaray last month that saw the Old Trafford side sacrifice a two goal lead twice in the game.

Moreover, Bruno Fernandes has also faced a barrage of criticism from pundits on his credentials as club captain.

Manchester United have a boatload of problems, but few are more pressing than the lack of leaders in the team. Yes, it is true that the club is suffering a huge number of injuries that has robbed the outfit of natural leaders like Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez.

However, there is no way a youngster like Kobbie Mainoo should be left to hang out and dry like that. It speaks volumes to the problems the club is suffering right now. If the club has any ambition to fight its way back to the top, incidents like this must come to an end.

Below Deck Manchester: What Ratcliffe bought for a similar price to Antony

British billionaire, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is on the verge of completing his 25% stake buyout of Manchester United.

However, according to The Mirror, the Mancunian side won’t even be his “most glamorous purchase”.

That honour goes to his “amazing superyacht, known as Hampshire II. The stunning vessel is worth a staggering $150million (£120m)”.

“Hampshire II is 256ft long, 41ft wide and weighs a staggering 1,887 gross tonnes. It can cater up to 14 people with seven guest cabins and 23 crew members onboard”.

The ship, which was built in the Netherlands, has copious features, as one would expect from such an expensive item.

It boasts a helipad and a beach club with “stunning” terraces and sea views.

Naturally, the rooms are steeped in luxury and Ratcliffe has his own dining table to wine and dine elites. No doubt, many United fans would be imagining the INEOS owner trying to sell the idea of playing for the Red Devils to the likes of Kylian Mbappe on said yacht.

The vessel has more than just the traditional signs of luxury, however.

“The superyacht has many unique features. There is a deck that can be transformed into a playing field for sports – such as football – and there’s a zip line which goes down from the crow’s nest. Ratcliffe’s active lifestyle explains his interest in the Red Devils”.

This is not the first time The Peoples Person has relayed information on the British billionaire’s personal wealth, as the INEOS owner also has Michael Schumacher’s first ever Ferrari Formula One car nestled safely in his garage.

United are yet to announce Ratcliffe’s 25% investment in the club which had been expected before Christmas.

Whilst tales of Sir Jim’s wealth will impress some, it is what his company does to sort out the dire mess the club is in, on and off the pitch, that will interest the majority of United fans, who have been left exhausted by the current owners and players.

Confirmed United XI vs West Ham: 19-year old Willy Kambwala in shock debut at centre back

Kobbie Mainoo will continue his sensational start to life in the Manchester United first XI as he plays alongside Scott McTominay at the London Stadium today.

Christian Eriksen is back in the squad and on the bench after a spell on the sidelines.

United’s defence sees the return of Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right back due to Diogo Dalot’s suspension at the hands of Michael “book him Danno” Oliver.

Youngster Willy Kambwala is a shock starter for United as their defensive injury crisis has left them with no senior centre backs except for Jonny Evans.

Kambwala partners Evans at centre back, with Luke Shaw at left back and Andre Onana in goal.

Manager Erik ten Hag revealed that Victor Lindelof has undergone surgery and will be out for a month. He joins Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia on the physio’s table. This means that Sergio Reguilon is the only fit backup defender in the entire squad. Raphael Varane is a last minute withdrawal.

In midfield, Mainoo’s presence means Sofyan Amrabat drops back, with Bruno Fernandes in the number 10. Eriksen will hope to get half an hour from the bench as he works his way back to full fitness.

Casemiro is back in light training but Ten Hag does not expect him back in contention for a start before mid-January.

Donny van de Beek is on the bench despite having agreed a January loan move to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Up front, there is still no place for struggling Marcus Rashford, who is on the bench.

Alejandro Garnacho and Antony keep their places on the left and right wing, respectively, and Rasmus Hojlund will hope to get off the mark up front in his 14th Premier League game.

Anthony Martial remains unavailable and Jadon Sancho remains exiled.

Amad Diallo has been working hard in training but has failed to make the bench.

The subs’ bench comprises Altay Bayindir, Rhys Bennet, Reguilin, Amrabat, Eriksen, Hannibal, Van de Beek, Facu Pellistri and Rashford.

Kick off at the London Stadium is at 12.30pm GMT.

Former United defender set for shock return to old club after horror show in Turkey

Former Manchester United defender Eric Bailly could be set to leave Besiktas in the January transfer window.

Despite only signing for the Turkish giants in September, the 29-year-old is already open to a move.

Transfer-guru, Fabrizio Romano claims Villarreal are working on an offer for the Ivorian in the upcoming window.

It would be a return to familiar surroundings for Bailly who played for the Spanish side before moving to United in the summer of 2016, for a £30million fee.

However, despite impressing in spells, injuries plagued his career at Old Trafford and the Ivorian international left the club after making just 113 appearances over a seven year stay.

Via a loan move to Marseille last season, Bailly officially left United at the end of his contract this summer.

However, things haven’t quite gone to plan for the defender since his move to Turkey with Bailly finding himself out of the first team squad.

The Sun report Bailly was one of five players axed from the first team following a heavy 3-1 defeat to rivals Fenerbahce, with Besiktas citing “poor performance and incompatibility with the team”.

This has left the centre-back out in the cold and unlikely to add to his eight appearances for the club.

Bailly’s agent has since slammed the club’s decision claiming Bailly’s “rights are being violated”.

It all points towards a short stay in Turkey for the former United man and although no official talks have taken place yet, it would be surprise to see him still at the club come the end of the January window.

4-2-3-1: United will open the floodgates against West Ham with this attacking line-up

A number of Manchester United’s walking wounded are starting their recoveries but most will not be quite in time for tomorrow’s trip to London to face West Ham.

Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Christian Eriksen and Amad Diallo are all back in some form of training, but unlikely to make the squad.

Harry Maguire and Tyrell Malacia are definitely out, while Victor Lindelof and Anthony Martial’s mysterious absences have not been clearly explained by manager Erik ten Hag.

Diogo Dalot is suspended after his controversial red card against Liverpool last weekend.

If Lindelof remains unavailable, the defence almost picks itself, with Andre Onana in goal, Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right back, Luke Shaw at left back and Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans at centre back.

Sergio Reguilon is the only other fit senior option.

In midfield, with Bruno Fernandes returning in the number 10 role, Ten Hag will have to pick two from the three fit stars, Scott McTominay, Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo, to fit in behind him. Another excellent performance from the 18 year old at Anfield could – and should – see him start.

We think it will be McTominay alongside him, who seems to have won Ten Hag’s trust despite a number of lacklustre performances. Amrabat has hardly set the world on fire so far this season, either.

Hannibal may be an option but could also lose his place on the bench if Eriksen is seen as fit enough for a few minutes’ play.

What Ten Hag will do with his misfiring forwards is probably the biggest question. Does he stick with eager beaver, Rasmus Hojlund, despite his failure to score a single Premier League goal in 13 games?

Martial is rated by premierinjuries.com as having a 25% chance of playing. He could provide an alternative. Marcus Rashford could also play up front.

Rashford may alternatively be reinstated on one of the wings, but we think Ten Hag will stick with Antony on the right and Alejandro Garnacho on the left despite their poor returns of late.

Facu Pellistri is another option.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted XI for tomorrow’s lunchtime kick-off:
