Video: United man inconsolable at full-time after Champions League horror show

Manchester United’s Champions League journey is dangling by a thread after a draining 3-3 draw against Galatasary on Wednesday.

From a neutral point of view, the game was a thriller with end-to-end drama which saw United twice take a two goal lead before eventually throwing away the three points.

Alejandro Garnacho continued his form by opening the scoring in the first five minutes before Bruno Fernandes lashed United into cruise control midway through the half.

However, by half-time United had seen their lead halved thanks to a Hakim Ziyech free-kick that curiously found its way past Andre Onana.

The ball struck the middle of the net after Onana gambled on the strike coming over the wall and United were back under the cosh.

Scott McTominay restored the two-goal advantage early in the second half but Onana’s nightmare was set to continue.

Ziyech again lined up a free kick from 25 yards out and this time his tame effort was inexplicably spooned into his own net by the United keeper when it was easier to save.

Onana was then beaten at his near post, albeit from a thunderous Kerem Akturkoglu strike and United were pegged back to 3-3.

This time United couldn’t find a riposte and Onana was left shouldering the responsibility of leaving their qualification dreams in tatters.

A video was later posted on X, showing the Cameroonian looking inconsolable at the full-time whistle.

The 27-year-old was seen throwing his gloves to the floor and pulling at his jersey after a performance that was hard to defend.

Onana looked to have regained some form after his last-gasp penalty save against Copenhagen last month, kicking of a string of good performances.

However, last night’s horror show has left United needing results to go their way to get out of a group they really shouldn’t have made a mess of.

Bayern Munich travel to Old Trafford on the final matchday with United needing to beat the German giants and hope Galatasaray and Copenhagen draw in Denmark to secure progress through to the knockouts.

Onana will now have to dust himself down with the games coming thick and fast for Ten Hag’s men, starting with a testing trip to top four rivals Newcastle on Saturday night.

Galatasaray's first goal shouldn't have stood as officials miss big rule break

Manchester United are staring at the barrel of elimination from the UEFA Champions League after another collapse, this time at Galatasaray.

Despite having two-goal leads two times in the game, player errors and lack of game management inexplicably condemned them to a draw.

Now, their destiny lies outside their own hands and players have rightly taken the brunt of the blame, particularly goalkeeper Andre Onana.

However, it has now emerged that the referee failed to notice a rule being broken for the Turkish side’s first goal, which would have ruled it out.

Hakim Ziyech was the scorer from a free kick where Onana’s bad positioning led to him being wrong-footed as the ball went to exactly where he had been standing before the kick.

Still, the goal shouldn’t have stood because as per the rules, if three or more players are in a defensive wall, all attacking players must remain at least one metre from the ball till it is in play.

For the goal, United had a four-man wall so this rule should have come into effect.

A Galatasaray player was standing close to the wall and beIN Sports later tweeted that he was standing just 61 cm away from the wall.

Therefore, he was directly hampering the wall’s ability to shift or jump, thereby breaking the rule.

Unfortunately for United, the rule wasn’t enforced at the time, nor was the play called back, which likely means that the officials forgot about it.

It changed the momentum of the game as United didn’t go into half-time leading by two goals, while the goal being approved meant Onana’s head was already gone due to his positioning error.

It continued a theme of contentious decisions going against United throughout the group stages this season.

While the players and the manager haven’t helped themselves in the slightest with their performances, the reality remains that luck hasn’t favoured the team at all either.

Paul Scholes believes this United goalscorer needs to “take responsibility” for Galatasaray loss - report

Paul Scholes has lambasted Bruno Fernandes for the Manchester United captain’s post-match interview.

The former United midfielder criticised the current one for not taking responsibility for his role in the 3-3 draw with Galatasaray last night.

The result leaves United’s hopes of progressing to the knock-out stages of the Champions League dangling by a thread, with Erik ten Hag’s side needing both a victory over Bayern Munich in the final fixture, as well as Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen to draw.

It feels unlikely even to the most optimistic of fans.

In the aftermath of last night’s game which appeared, at times, to resemble two amateur boxers swinging wildly with no care for technique in the twelfth round, Fernandes admitted United have fallen foul of the same mistakes they had in previous Champions League matches.

Speaking to TNT Sports, the captain revealed: “It was another game where we could have closed the game. We had too many chances, as I’ve said, and mistakes by ourselves. It’s too bad, to be honest.”

“I don’t want to be too negative, but what we’ve been doing in the Champions League is not enough. We have to control our games every time, it’s not the first game we’ve had like this,” Fernandes rued.

While any objective analyst may look at those comments and think they are a fair assessment of yesterday’s match, Scholes took a different approach in the TNT Studio.

The former midfield maestro turned average pundit asserted: “I know in his interview he is talking about mistakes, but he made two big mistakes tonight by giving two stupid fouls away that lead to two goals.”

Fernandes conceded both free-kicks which ultimately led to Galatasaray scoring twice to claw their way back into a game United had appeared in firm control of. This, of course, ignores the absolutely calamitous errors by Andre Onana for both of these free-kicks; efforts which have no business every becoming goals at Sunday League level, let alone the most illustrious competition in club football.

Scholes went on to contend that the “full team, including himself as the captain, have to take responsibility – it’s a game they should win.” Fernandes’ constant use of the subject pronoun ‘we” in his post-match interview would normally indicate a person accepting his role within a wider group but maybe Scholes knows something different.

The fact United’s performance had looked so promising prior to Onana’s mistakes was also, in large part, because of Fernandes’ brilliance going forward. A superb one-two with Rasmus Hojlund allowed the Portuguese midfielder to assist Alejandro Garnacho’s opener, before his own emphatic rocket from thirty yards into the top corner put United two-nil up.

Scholes did not seem keen to acknowledge either of these contributions, nor lay the responsibility for either of Galatasaray’s free-kicks solely at the feet (or lack of hands) of Onana.

"He will get his chances": Ten Hag offers important update on Onana's potential replacement - report

Erik ten Hag has praised his collection of shotstoppers at Old Trafford as a “very good keeper group” in the aftermath of last night’s Champions League debacle, and contended Altay Bayindir would “get his chances” amid uproar about Andre Onana’s performance.

Manchester United’s future in Europe’s premier competition hangs by the thinnest of threads following the calamitous 3-3 draw with Galatasaray in Turkey.

United twice led by two goals – first 2-0 and then 3-1 – only to squander both leads. A two goal advantage is often called the most dangerous lead in football and Ten Hag’s team tried their very best to prove this old adage true yesterday.

Or, rather, Ten Hag’s goalkeeper did.

Andre Onana gifted Galatasaray two goals at points in the game when his team were cruising through an inexplicable combination of errors.

United took an early lead through the irrepressible Alejandro Garnacho, who rifled home a vicious finish with his weaker foot from a tight angle. This was quickly followed by an equally emphatic rocked from Bruno Fernandes’ right boot, putting United in the oh so dangerous position of two-nil up.

A free-kick was then conceded which Hakim Ziyech, formerly of Chelsea, proceeded to hopefully hit through a flagrant gap in United’s wall. Onana took a misstep to his left and the ball went to his right; the Cameroonian stumbling slightly as the ball sailed past him in what should have been a routine save.

The remainder of the first-half became frantic and pressurised as the home team (and fans) were reignited, after United’s excellent performance had largely blunted them.

Ten Hag’s team began the second half in improved fashion with Scott McTominay adroitly finishing off a brilliant team move, largely spearheaded by the right-hand side combination of Antony and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. United, once again, looked in control with a cushion of two goals.

Enter Mr Onana.

Another free-kick was conceded but this time further out. Yet Onana still managed to convert a simple catch from an overhit cross into a goal for the opposition. Arguably, the goalkeeper should have been presented with the Man of the Match award for the home team at full time.

With Galatasaray back in proceedings, against the run of play, for the second time, United began to tire while their opponents found new energy. Shortly after, an equaliser was found through a scorching shot by Muhammed Aktürkoğlu. Even for this one questions were asked of Onana’s positioning, though this pales in comparison as an error to the previous two goals.

United were unable to find a winner as the game reached a frantic denouement, though they had the chances to secure the desperately needed three points. While a draw does not rule out qualification to the knock-out stages, it makes it feel a starkly remote possibility, with United needing both to beat Bayern and for Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen to draw.

An away trip to the hostile RAMS Stadium is difficult at the best of times; it becomes near-impossible when your goalkeeper switches allegiance to make the game a 10 v 12 man match.

After the game, Ten Hag refused to blame Onana directly, instead referring to the collective defensive mistakes involved in each goal. This was nothing more than a manager protecting their player, however, with fans and the media baying for blood in last night’s aftermath.

Nonetheless, the Dutchman did offer fans some potential respite, with the calls for Bayindir to start the next game overwhelming on social media.

Ten Hag said:

“…we are very pleased with Altay, he gets used to the Premier League, he gets used to European football – which is tough when you’re coming from Turkey. But we are very pleased with that process, he’s doing very well.

“He has to be patient, but if he works well, if he keeps his progress, he will get his chances and then he has to take this.”

With Onana looking increasingly likely to depart for the African Cup of Nations in January, Bayindir was always pencilled in to take the starting berth in goal for United at some point.

If Onana’s performances last night continue, Bayindir may get his chance at the number one slot far earlier than January.

United "open to letting" Sunday's hero leave as early as January - report

Manchester United’s game against Galatasaray in the Champions League will be a do-or-die contest and Erik ten Hag’s side need a win to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages alive.

United head into the contest on the back of their most convincing win so far this season — a 3-0 triumph against Everton in front of a raucous Goodison Park crown on Sunday.

The show was stolen by academy graduates Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial also getting on the scoresheet.

Martial’s future

The Frenchman scored his ninth goal against the Toffees and also won the penalty which was converted by the Mancunian.

The France international has been mainly used as a backup for Rasmus Hojlund but it was good to see him deliver with the Dane not fit for the contest.

Hojlund is in the squad for the Galatasaray game but Martial might still get his chance on Wednesday. However, his future seems to lie away from Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old has flattered to deceive since his big-money move back under Louis van Gaal and despite Ten Hag trusting him last season, a combination of poor injury record and lackadaisical attitude meant he hardly ever made the difference.

The former Monaco starlet was on the market in the summer but no team came forward due to his massive wages and his less than stellar fitness record.

Despite the Everton goal, which was his second this campaign, Football Insider have claimed United are open to moving him on in the winter transfer window.

His current deal lasts until next summer with the Reds holding the option of triggering a one-year extension but no calls regarding the same have been taken so far.

“Anthony Martial’s future at Man United is yet to be decided with his contract up at the end of the season, sources have told Football Insider.

United open to selling Martial

“It is believed Man United would be open to letting Martial leave the club in January – if they receive a suitable offer.

“But a well-placed source has told Football Insider that will only happen if the Red Devils can first bring in another striker in the new year.”

With the former Atalanta star yet to open his account in the Premier League, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s entry delayed, Martial might still be of use this season.

Fans still regularly sing his name but it is high time that the French star is allowed to find a new home and United should bring in someone more suited to the demands of being a target man.

Three Spanish clubs battling it out over permanent Mason Greenwood deal - report

A host of Spanish sides are thought to be interested in securing Mason Greenwood’s services this summer, according to a report by The Sun.

The British tabloid contends the forward will find himself at the centre of a “summer transfer flurry” in La Liga, after impressing in the first few months of his loan to Getafe.

Two goals and three assists in ten league games has put Spanish clubs on notice with the quality of his most recent strike particularly eye-catching.

Both Valencia and Real Sociedad are both thought to be “monitoring” Greenwood with a view to making a move once his current loan deal has expired, though this interest is expected to rise should the 22-year old’s performances continue their current trajectory.

Getafe are hopeful of keeping the forward, however, who has become something of a sensation amongst the club’s fanbase. Getafe officials are reportedly targeting April as a deadline to initiate further talks with their Old Trafford counterparts over Greenwood’s future beyond this season.

As explained in greater detail elsewhere by The Peoples Person, Greenwood has settled well into life in South Madrid, enjoying both the lack of overt media presence, as well as the relatively low pressure environment of Getafe.

The coaching staff also appear to be managing the forward’s minutes in a carefully mediated manner, enabling Greenwood to build up his fitness slowly and deliberately. They reportedly expect his fitness to reach optimal levels by January.

The Sun reports the words of a source who reveals how happy both the player and his newly adopted club are with his initial few months in Spain.

“Mason has done brilliantly since he moved to Spain and is really catching the eye after a strong start to his time at Getafe. There are a number of clubs looking at him in Spain with scouts from Valencia and [Real] Sociedad seemingly at the front of the queue.”

“It is highly unlikely Mason will return to Manchester United. That ship has sailed, and he looks set to enjoy the next phase of his career in Spain where he has really settled and found his feet both personally and professionally.

“He owes a huge debt to Getafe for the help and support they have given him, and it’s possible he could make his move there permanent at the end of the season. But if he carries on playing like he is, other bids and offers are likely to come in, leaving Mason, and the club, with a decision to make.”

Greenwood will have one year remaining on his contract with United come the summer, though the club reserves the right to extend this by a further twelve months. Such a move may reignite the controversy which saw Old Trafford officials hastily reverse their ill-advised decision to try to reintegrate Greenwood into Erik ten Hag’s squad, however.

As such, a clean break in the summer with a permanent move to La Liga appears the most logical and palatable option for both parties. Which team in Spain Greenwood joins remains less obvious, given the attention the forward appears to be generating across the league.

Sir Alex Ferguson makes £1.2 million investment to bring him closer to his family - report

Sir Alex Ferguson has bought a new £1.2m valued house to be closer to his family in the wake of his wife’s recent passing.

This is according to the The Mirror, who have claimed that the former Manchester United manager has purchased a house in “an idyllic village next door to son Darren so he can be near his grandchildren”.

The Peoples Person relayed recently that after the death of his beloved wife, Ferguson had put his property that he had shared with Lady Cathy, up for sale.

The mansion was sold for £3.5m and had been the couple’s home for over 20 years.

The house was located in the nearby village of Wilmslow and even had a “Ferguson clan” tartan carpet in the games room.

As fast as one of his legendary team’s counter attacks, it appears the great manager has found a new place to call home.

Sir Alex snapped up the detached five-bedroom property in Goostrey, Cheshire. Interestingly, “England footballer Raheem Sterling previously lived in the village, which first appears in the Domesday book of 1086”.

Estate agents say of the five-bedroom home: “This impressive, deceptively spacious detached home is… positioned within a very private, gated and secure plot. It boasts approximately 7,000sq ft”.

It will certainly be a tough adjustment for the greatest manager of all time.

Ferguson met his late wife in 1964 and they had been together ever since until her death a few weeks ago.

Sir Alex described her as a “bedrock” in his life and credited her for providing the stability at home that allowed his managerial career to flourish.

The couple had three sons, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Now, hopefully the great man can enjoy being a great-grandfather, grandfather and father from an even closer distance. He probably has a few interesting tales to tell.

Sky Germany confirm United's interest in Bundesliga wonderkid

Manchester United’s struggles in the opening parts of the season have largely been down to the lack of goals in Erik ten Hag’s side.

United are comfortably the lowest scorers in the top half of the Premier League but still find themselves in the mix for the Champions League places.

Ten Hag’s troops are also only six points away from the top of table and will be hoping for an upturn in attacking fortunes going into the new year.

With the January window fast approaching, Ten Hag will be desperate to add to his attacking options with Jadon Sancho surely heading for the exit door.

Bayer Leverkusen forward Florian Wirtz is one of the players linked with a switch to Old Trafford after setting the Bundesliga alight since bursting into Xabi Alonso’s first team.

Leverkusen are flying high at the top of the German league having dropped only two points from their opening 12 fixtures.

Wirtz has been a key figure in Leverkusen’s impressive form, contributing to eight goals in the league including a couple of wonder strikes.

Sky Germany have confirmed United’s interest in the 20-year-old with lead journalists Florian Plettenberg and Nico Ditter providing an update.

“The Red Devils are scouting him, according to Sky information, but have not made an offer, nor have they been in contact with the family. However, this will still be done,” the report says.

However, should United earmark Wirtz as their man, they will face stiff competition to secure his signature, with European giants Bayern Munich and Real Madrid also registering interest.

It’s also reported Leverkusen have slapped a €120 million price tag on the star to warn off potential suitors and they hope to keep hold of him until the end of the season, at least.

Wirtz can operate from multiple attacking positions but predominantly plays on the left side of the attack at Leverkusen.

His return to form this season is a welcome one after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the last campaign which could have derailed the young man’s career.

However, Wirtz has shaken off any fitness issues to get back to his best and catapult Leverkusen into an unlikely title race in Germany.

David Ornstein drops huge multiple updates on status of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's bid

Since it was all but confirmed that Sir Jim Ratcliffe will be taking over 25% of Manchester United and sporting control to go with it, fans have been in an anticipatory mood.

However, in true Glazer fashion, the official announcement still hasn’t arrived.

Now, David Ornstein, in an interview with NBC Sports, has given some important updates on the process and the personnel associated with it.

Ornstein says that fans shouldn’t hold their breath on a sale going through this week, as “lawyers take time, Glazers take time”.

He added that there are no serious concerns about the process though, which is still ongoing and expected to proceed smoothly, just with time.

He went on to some personnel-related decisions that could come with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival.

Ratcliffe favourite Sir Jean Claude Blanc is expected to become the United CEO in the worst-kept secret about United’s new management so far.

In a blow to United’s plans in the winter window, Ornstein also said that even though their bid is expected to be ratified before January, it’s too soon to be handing them executive powers.

Therefore, INEOS will only come in January in an advisory capacity and won’t take firm decisions, or execute them.

Finally, a big name was ruled out by Ornstein from the Sporting Director race.

Former Liverpool man Michael Edwards, the architect of their modern team, was touted as a potential name to watch out for by many outlets.

However, Ornstein has now confirmed that Edwards is expected to refuse the Sporting Director job because he is looking for a sole football CEO/director job that covers a much larger remit.

In that scenario, Paul Mitchell and Dougie Freedman are expected to lead the race.

Two jaw-dropping performances, nine players: United's academy dazzled in Everton game

As the dust has settled on Manchester United’s 3-0 victory versus Everton on Sunday afternoon, it is pertinent to highlight that three of United’s successful 2022 Youth Cup team were in the matchday squad.

Two of said players made massive contributions to the result and look to be two of the most promising stories of the season to follow from a Man United fan’s perspective.

Alejandro Garnacho scored “the best overhead kick ever” according to some, which crucially broke the deadlock in the third minute.

Another player from the starting line-up of the victorious Youth Cup side, Kobbie Mainoo, had pundits waxing lyrical over the 18 year olds afternoon’s work. Ian Wright claimed he just thought “wow” and the notoriously hard to impress, Roy Keane, even effused that it was challenging not to get excited about the midfielder’s full debut.

The third was striker Joe Hugill, who made the bench due to an injury to Rasmus Hojlund. The youngster didn’t get the chance to make an impression on the pitch, but after scoring in United’s pre-season tour, the attacker will hope to be get more opportunities in the first team.

Manchester United’s youth team won the coveted Youth Cup final in May 2022 at Old Trafford versus Nottingham Forest. Rhys Bennett and a double from Alejandro Garnacho saw the Red Devils win 3-1 on the night and claim the silverware. It would be a record extending 11th time the club has won the trophy and the first time since a Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard inspired triumph in 2011.

The Old Trafford outfit has a proud history of blooding youngsters and the academy has educated some of the finest players to play the game. United’s commitment to youth can be seen in their unmatched record of naming an academy graduate in every squad since the 30th of October 1937.

In fact, four academy-grown players started the game, including Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay. Another, Hannibal Mejbri was on the bench, hence six in total to add to the names of Garnacho, Mainoo and Hugill, were in the squad.

Additionally, four more players in the matchday 18 may not have been part of the Man United youth system but were signed for the first team as teenagers. They are Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot and Facundo Pellistri.

In fact, to highlight the production power of the youth system at the club, two of Everton’s starters and one bench option also came through the ranks at United. James Garner, Dwight McNeil and former Youth Cup winner, Michael Keane.

There has been criticism of late of the team and their movement away from using the academy. Erik ten Hag has splashed the cash since his arrival in May 2022. The Dutch coach has spent £407m on new signings and has been critiqued here for abandoning players like James Garner far too early to fund moves for lesser players from other team’s academies.

Nonetheless, Sunday’s game provided a road map forward. The roles of Mainoo and Garnacho demonstrate that the youth system at United is still working and if used, can still be a vital characteristic of the side. Whilst, splurging on talent is necessary to reach the top, opportunities should still be given to the very best of the academy. It is in the club’s DNA.

Finally, with the under 18 team in scintillating form and huge talents like 16 year old Shea Lacey at the club, there is much to be excited about. If not left to rot, the youth system will continue to flourish and produce talents for the first team, like it always has since 1937.

United star makes BBC Team of the Week after incredible effort against Everton

Manchester United’s secured an impressive three points on Sunday, beating a fired up Everton side by three goals to nil at Goodison Park.

The game was played against a fiery backdrop with the home faithful vehemently protesting against the unprecedented ten point deduction handed out by the Premier League for breaking Profit and Sustainability rules.

However, United managed the atmosphere well, largely down to taking the lead just past the two minute mark through an Alejandro Garnacho wonder goal.

When Diogo Dalot lofted in a deep cross into the Everton box, there looked to be no immediate danger to Jordan Pickford’s goal.

However, Garnacho had other ideas, scurrying back to get into position in order to leap into the Merseyside sky and unleash an unstoppable bicycle kick into the top corner.

It was an absurd goal that silenced the home fans and allowed United to gain control of what looked like an extremely tricky fixture on paper.

The Goal of the Season contender was a carbon copy of Wayne Rooney’s famous winner in the Manchester Derby over a decade ago and was enough to earn Garnacho a place in Garth Crooks’ Team of the Week.

Technically, Garnacho’s effort arguably trumped Rooney’s, a goal which Sir Alex Ferguson described as the “greatest goal” he’s ever seen.

The occasion of Rooney’s strike outweighs yesterday’s but there is no question Garnacho’s strike will be a contender for the coveted Puskas award come the end of the season.

Outside of the goal, it wasn’t the Argentine’s greatest performance but the quality of the strike meant there was no way he could have been left out of the selected XI.

Garnacho was the better of United’s front three who curiously all managed to get on the score sheet despite not enjoying the best of individual games.

Andre Onana, Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo were all unfortunate to miss out on Crooks’ team, with the trio United’s best players on the day.

Crooks’ team was heavily influenced by Manchester City’s clash with Liverpool as Ederson, Nathan Ake, Erling Haaland were joined by Trent Alexander-Arnold in the line up.

Jamaal Lascelles made up a back three with Michael Olise and Anthony Gordon chosen as wing backs. Mohammed Kudus and Declan Rice made up the midfield with João Pedro making up the front line after his brace for Brighton.

Erik ten Hag will be hoping for more of the same from Garnacho and his teammates with United facing a daunting run of pre-Christman fixtures, starting with the must-win trip to Turkey to save their Champions League campaign on Wednesday.

"He’s a special player": Ten Hag and Bruno blown away by United gem's Everton display

Manchester United secured their most comfortable win of the season so far, trouncing Everton 3-0 in front of a raucous Goodison Park on Sunday.

The night will be forever remembered for Alejandro Garnacho’s sublime overhead kick, a worthy candidate to win the Goal of the Season award.

The Argentine will rightfully claim all the plaudits but it was Kobbie Mainoo who quietly stole the show, putting in a performance far beyond his years.

Not to forget, the 18-year-old was returning from a major ankle injury and was making his first-ever Premier League start in a hostile environment with the fans baying for blood.

Mainoo stole the show

The England U-19 international’s work rate and desire were top-notch as he covered almost every blade of grass while showing incredible positional awareness.

Whenever the full-back was caught higher up the pitch, the academy sensation dropped in to cover for him while he always asked for the ball in the middle of the park and dropped in as the third centre-back during the build-up.

No wonder manager Erik ten Hag had so many plans for Mainoo only for the midfielder to suffer a freak injury during pre-season against Real Madrid.

United have seen Casemiro struggle this season while in his absence, Sofyan Amrabat has flattered to deceive but Mainoo could be about to solve all of the manager’s headaches.

Now that he is back and put in such a top-class display, the United boss was full of praise for the breakthrough star while tipping him to play a major role in games to come.

“He has a lot of abilities and it was a really disappointing moment in pre-season when he got so badly injured. For him but also for our team because I know he can progress a lot if he plays many of such games as today.

“I know young players will develop very quickly and we thought it was the moment to bring him in. We prepared him properly but he did a great job and now he has to build on this.”

Not only the manager but the skipper Bruno Fernandes was also blown away with what he saw from the academy graduate.

He not only praised his displays on the pitch but also what he has been seeing in training including the teenager’s attitude.

Earns praise from ETH and Bruno

The Portuguese also claimed that learning from the best in the business — Casemiro and Amrabat were proving pivotal in Mainoo’s development.

“I always talk about Kobbie. I think he’s a special player too. What he puts on the game, what he gives to the team, it’s known to anyone in the squad.

“I think he has great players in front of him to learn from because he plays with one of the best in the world like Casemiro. Also Sofyan Amrabat who plays in that position – that is really good and he’s getting everything from them.

“He wants to learn, is eager to learn and I think that’s probably the best capability he has because he wants to learn every time. He’s eager to listen to everyone to get better and better.”

United will now hope he can continue to produce the goods as they enter a pivotal week in their season with a do-or-die Champions League encounter against Galatasaray up next followed by an away clash against Newcastle United.

"Absolute rubbish": Roy Keane blasts Ten Hag for praising United star

Manchester United returned to action with an impressive 3-0 victory against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

The game will be remembered for an outstanding Alejandro Garnacho strike that opened the scoring and set United on their way to their best performance of the season so far.

Marcus Rashford doubled United’s tally before Anthony Martial’s cool finish killed the game off with just over ten minutes remaining.

Rashford confidently scored from the penalty spot after being handed the responsibility by captain Bruno Fernandes who recognised the need for a boost in the forward’s confidence.

Erik ten Hag praised Fernandes for the gesture but former United captain Roy Keane wasn’t impressed with the manager’s words of praise.

As reported by the Mirror, Keane curiously took issue with Ten Hag for praising his captain, labelling it as “absolute rubbish”.

“He’s giving toffee out there to Bruno for passing on the ball for the penalty. Absolute b***** rubbish. Absolute rubbish coming out with that,” blasted Keane.

It was a change of tact from Keane who had previously praised United’s forwards for winning the game that looked like a potential banana skin.

Keane was also quick to remind United that despite the solid showing at Goodison, they were still way behind the leading lights in the league and need to improve.

“Manchester United are sixth now – if you went back a few years, if you were sixth you’d be embarrassed.

“But obviously they seem happy with sixth. They have a long way to go. Manchester United have to be competing with the best teams,” he said.

Despite Keane’s pessimism, yesterday’s win means Ten Hag’s troops have now won five of their last six in the league, leaving them just six points off the top of the table.

United’s next league game will see them travel to Newcastle in what will be another acid test away from home, with Eddie Howe’s side in good form after dismantling Chelsea by four goals to one on Saturday.

United face “hefty” competition from Premier League rivals for Portuguese ace - Ben Jacobs

Manchester United have been continuously linked to defenders since the close of the summer transfer and well-known journalist, Ben Jacobs, has reported an update.

The Red Devils have been linked with copious defenders with The Peoples Person reporting recently that the most credible links are those of Goncalo Inacio and Jean-Clair Todibo.

Despite a positive 3-0 away win against Everton last night and a highly credible 15 points from the last 18 available in the league, the season has been somewhat of a rollercoaster for the Mancunian side.

Poor performances in the Champions League and an early Carabao Cup exit have been coupled with a defensive injury crisis with Lisandro Martinez and Jonny Evans missing large amounts of gametime. Raphael Varane has also seemingly fallen out of favour and has been linked with moves to Germany or back to France in the January or summer window. Therefore, Harry Maguire has been an unlikely hero as he has been a mainstay of the United defence in their recent upturn in form.

Nonetheless, it is unlikely Erik ten Hag will be happy to maintain Maguire and Victor Lindelof as his first choice centre-back pairing for much longer, hence the links to other defensive targets.

It has been suggested that Inacio could be that target according to givemesport.com. The website claims that “the young defender has a £52.5m release clause, meaning United can prise him away from the Portuguese club if they cough up the cash”.

Ben Jacobs has stated that Inacio is certainly on United’s list but “there is Premier League competition for him as well from several clubs”. The football writer also claims it is likely Tottenham Hotspur will make a move for the player.

Jacobs states that the Old Trafford outfit needs to find the balance of what they want to do this January window and whether or not they want to be aggressive in the window or wait until the summer, as they typically do.

He states their decision is down to “depth and due to the fact they can’t really afford to miss out on Champions League football versus finding the right name and waiting until the summer.”

The Portuguese defender certainly has a growing reputation in the game. Talent scout, Jacek Kulig, has recently labelled him a “complete player”.

Interestingly, Jacobs also asserts that Edmond Tapsoba’s name will continue to crop up as the winter window edges closer.

Tapsoba has already been linked to Man United before, most notably during the summer transfer window when it seemed Harry Maguire was on his way to West Ham. However, the player from Burkina Faso, has continued to be linked to a move to Manchester United or another English club. The Peoples Person has reported though that high-flying Bayer Leverkusen have no interest in selling the player until the end of the season.

The Old Trafford side clearly want a defender, and Goncalo Inacio may just be that man. However, whether the club opt to make a move in January or the summer, they will inevitably face stiff competition for the player’s signature. Hopefully the appeal of Old Trafford will be too much for the Portuguese star to turn down.

This crucial tactic will be the key to victory for United against Everton today

Manchester United travel to Everton for their first game back from the international break hoping to carry on their decent form in the Premier League.

Four league wins in five have eased the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag who, despite overseeing an underwhelming start to his second season in charge, will find himself five points off top should United win this afternoon.

However, it will take a big effort from Ten Hag’s troops to come away with the three points with a raucous atmosphere awaiting them at Goodison Park.

The game is to be played against the backdrop of an unprecedented ten point deduction handed out to Everton by the Premier League for breaking Profitability and Sustainability rules.

Therefore, United’s chances of getting the win will come down to how they handle the atmosphere in the stands, as much as any clever tactics from the manager.

This set of United players are not well known for their ability to play in hostile atmospheres and on a day where cool heads will be required, Ten Hag will need his experienced players to play well.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is fit for the hosts and poses a major threat with his physicality particularly in a Sean Dyche side.

The white hot atmosphere will only further serve Dyche’s tactic of playing long to the striker with Harry Maguire expected to be tasked with dealing with that threat.

Ten Hag will want to control the ball and take the sting out of the game but will be aware of not inviting any unnecessary pressure, especially in the early stages.

If Rasmus Hojlund is passed fit, expect Andre Onana to be looking for the United forward in the opening exchanges with Marcus Rashford and Antony providing support.

United wingers have been accused of disinterest at times this season but will not be able to get away with that today if they want to impact the game.

Antony scored on his last visit to Goodison and a contribution today would be timely reminder of his value to the side having failed to register a goal or an assist so far.

It’s imperative United’s attackers stay switched on and use the ball wisely by making the right decisions when they are in possession high up the pitch.

Bruno Fernandes also has a decent record at Goodison and will no doubt play a key role should United end victorious.

Getting the Portuguese into threatening areas will, as ever, be the order of the day for United with Bruno’s eye for goal and ability to play the final ball one of the best in the division.

No doubt United will have to withstand pressure at times but if they can stand strong and score first, they could find themselves edging back toward the top of the table by the end of the afternoon.

Former United hero backs brilliant young left-footed centre back to fulfil dream at Old Trafford

Former Manchester United winger Andrei Kanchelskis has backed Zenit St Petersburg defender Nuraly Alip to succeed at Old Trafford if he were to make the sensational move.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person revealed comments from Alip’s agents, who officially denied suggestions that United had made contact over the possible signing of their client.

It was previously indicated that the Red Devils sent scouts to watch Alip.

Apparently, the United representatives were impressed with what they saw and went back to sing the Kazakhstan international’s praises.

Kanchelskis spoke to Meta-ratings.kz (via Tribal Football) and remarked that Alip has the ability to make it at United.

The former footballer also described how such a transfer could bring attention to the sport in Kazakhstan.

Kanchelskis said, “Everyone would like it to be true. If he goes there, I can only wish him good luck. For starters, at least he just got there.”

“Imagine what will happen to Kazakh football? This will be a big step to popularize domestic football. Thousands of boys across the country will set him up as an example to each other and this is how strong football players will grow up.”

He added, “Not everyone can play in such a club. Can he or won’t he? If the information is indeed confirmed, then some conclusions can be drawn. Alip is a good football player.”

The 54-year-old went on to draw comparisons between Alip and himself when he made the switch to United.

Kanchelskis noted that when he made the jump, not many people believed he could survive at the club and even predicted that he would be doomed to primarily stay on the bench.

“But I didn’t sit there on the sidelines. Let’s wait for real things, but I repeat: this is very good for Kazakhstan.”

Kanchelskis was a start in Sir Alex Ferguson’s first great United side in the 90s. He helped the Red Devils win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup during his four-year tenure.

Dropped star shows “no indication of wishing to leave” United despite media frenzy - The Athletic

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has not shown any indication that he wants to leave the club even amidst his reduced lack of minutes.

At the moment, Varane seems to be firmly below the pecking order, with Erik ten Hag preferring the likes of Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof ahead of the Frenchman.

During the Manchester derby, eyebrows were raised when Evans was preferred ahead of the more accomplished and distinguished Varane.

It was even more puzzling when Ten Hag revealed that Varane was dropped due to tactical reasons.

Since then, the four-time Champions League winner has not started a game and has had to be content with three appearances from the bench.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person suggested that Ten Hag’s relationship with Varane has “practically broken down” after the pair had a frank exchange of views on the player’s current predicament.

It was relayed that Varane is weighing up his options, with a January departure from Old Trafford firmly on the cards. Saudi Arabia is a genuine destination for the 30-year-old.

Bayern Munich are also thought to be admirers of the United star, although there is an acceptance his extremely high wages almost certainly render a swoop impossible.

However, according to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, as it stands, Varane still remains committed to the Red Devils and there are no signs pointing towards his departure this January.

“Being out of the side is frustrating Varane but he is not a disruptive presence and United still regard him as a valuable player. At present, he has shown no indication of wishing to leave, although a continuation of his place on the periphery would inevitably force him to look at his options.”

“The Saudi Pro League would always be interested in a player of his calibre and, should the offer on a transfer fee be significant, United are open to listening. Financial fair play regulations are a very real concern at the club, albeit those pressures could be eased if Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment is ratified and he injects capital.”

Whitwell also confirms that Bayern are indeed keeping close tabs on the former Real Madrid man. From the defender’s point of view, staying in Europe would be a far more attractive option.

The Athletic further states, “To say Raphael Varane is disappointed at falling down the pecking order at Manchester United is underselling things. Those who know his thinking suggest his feelings stray closer to annoyance.”

Ahead of United’s clash on Sunday against Everton at Goodison Park, all eyes are on Ten Hag and what course of action he chooses to take with respect to Varane. It will be interesting to see whether he starts or the manager will once again opt for a partnership of Maguire and Lindelof.

Italian giants increasingly hopeful of signing United outcast in January - report

Manchester United’s turbulent start to the season has left manager Erik ten Hag under pressure heading into the packed winter schedule.

Despite domestic form picking up in recent weeks, Ten Hag is yet to find any kind of serenity on or off the pitch in this campaign.

Jadon Sancho has provided the Dutch coach with one of his biggest headaches in his second term, having been banished from the first team since the start of September.

Ten Hag revealed he left Sancho out of the trip to Arsenal due to a below par week of training prior to the fixture – something the forward was quick to deny.

Sancho has since refused to apologise for his public outburst and now looks set to leave the club in January.

The Peoples Person reported interest from Juventus yesterday and further stories on the potential move are circling in the Italian media today.

calciomercato.com believe the switch, despite being a difficult one, is looking more and more likely as we creep toward the opening of the winter window.

The relationship between manager and player at United is apparently beyond repair and the club are resigned to Sancho leaving the club in the coming months.

With Sancho’s preference to stay in Europe rather than become the latest player to join the galaxy of stars moving to Saudi, United are in need of a resolution.

Juventus are the front runners for his signature but may need United to contribute financially to the deal which may come in the form of a loan-to-buy.

Due to Sancho’s monster wages at Old Trafford, Juve are not in a position to cover his entire salary and would need United to cover a portion before they look at a permanent deal.

calciomercato.com add that a return to Borussia Dortmund is Sancho’s personal preference but with the German’s distancing themselves from the deal, Juve represent his next best option.

The 23-year-old’s departure from United would result in another black mark against the club’s recruitment policy in recent years, having signed the forward for £72 million just two years ago.

"Real honour": United women's star delighted to be heading out on international duty

Manchester United defender Millie Turner has been called up for England after Millie Bright withdrew through injury.

The uncapped Turner has been a constant for United’s squad for the last five years since they reformed and has started every league game so far this season.

“[I am] delighted to be called into the Lionesses squad,” Turner told club media.

“It’s a real honour for me and a proud moment for my friends and family.”

Turner received her first senior call-up in September 2020, during Phil Neville’s time in charge of the Lionesses.

She was then called up by England interim boss Hege Riise in 2021, but is yet to make an appearance for her country.

Turner will be joined by fellow United teammates Mary Earps, Maya Le Tissier, Katie Zelem and Ella Toone. According to The Evening Standard, “Turner, who has been capped by the Lionesses at various youth levels, will report for duty with the rest of the squad at St George’s Park on Monday.”

They face Netherlands and Scotland in the Nations League with hopes of Olympic qualification hanging by a thread.

The Lionesses currently sit third in the group behind Netherlands and Belgium.

Bright, who had captained England in the absence of the injured Leah Williamson, withdrew from the squad due to a knee injury and was absent from Chelsea’s Champions League game against Paris FC. Arsenal striker Beth Mead should make a welcome return after missing over a year through injury.

Before the international break, United still have to face Bristol City away in the WSL on Sunday.

Ten Hag says Onana fit, Shaw in squad, Hojlund decision to be made tomorrow

Erik ten Hag says Andre Onana will be fit, Luke Shaw will be in the squad and Rasmus Hojlund will be assessed tomorrow ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Everton on Sunday.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the game, the manager remarked “Andre is OK, he stepped in training today, he is good. Rasmus is still a close finish, he is training, outside, making very good steps but we have to wait until tomorrow, then we will make a final decision.”

On Shaw, he remarked “Luke Shaw will be available, he will be in the squad. You can mention many things – physical, technical ability, it’s clear. Long time this season we didn’t have a left full-back. Very happy he is back. He will help us be more stable.

The boss also said that Jonny Evans is not far away from fitness.

“He’s on the way back, he’s not ready for Everton, he will not take long,” he commented.

Asked about what he expects from Everton in their first match after learning of the 10 point deduction that has left them in the relegation zone, Ten Hag said: “I can see the opposition, they are mad.

“Finally it is about us. If they are mad, that’s their fuel, we have to match those standards. If we match those standards we have a very good chance to win the game.”

Asked about the reports of a rift with Raphael Varane, he said “I don’t know what the rumours are about. He’s a very important player. But there is a lot of internal competition.”

A reporter asked if Ten Hag feels he will need to sign a striker in January. “But our players are able to score goals, Rashy scored 30 goals last season, Rasmus Hojlund scored 5 goals in the Champions League, not many can do that,” he replied.

“So our players are capable of scoring goals and there will come a point when they will. As a group, we’re ranked fifth in the Premier League for creating chances so the players need to step up and deal with the pressures.”

The manager also said he felt that United had reached a “turning point” after their lacklustre start to the season.

“Definitely we have seen a turning point. We’ve seen how we deal with certain situations and we’ve built a foundation,” he said.

“Every team will drop points but the last five games, we’ve won four and that has given us confidence going forward.

“We now have a massive month and we head into it with confidence as in the Premier League anyone can beat anyone. There are no easy games.

“We go in a week, very condensed, we play three games in six days. As a squad, we have to deal with that. Of course, we have a plan, a strategy for it, we make the players aware and they have to take responsibility for it but especially it’s about cooperation.”

Kick-off at Goodison Park is at 4.30pm GMT on Sunday.

United legends play match in Dubai with bizarre additions making up the numbers

A team of Manchester United legends took to the field to take on a selected World XI in Dubai, last Saturday.

The game kicked off the inaugural Legends Football League which is due to be taken all over the world and set to resume in India in January.

As reported by The Daily Mail, former stars lined up to represent the club with a few unexpected additions making up the numbers.

Former Premier League players, Wes Morgan, Nathan Dyer and ‘keeper Julio Cesar all featured for United on the night, despite never pulling on the red shirt during their playing days.

Mikaël Silvestre captained the United side who were convincingly beaten by the World XI, losing 8-3.

Brazilian stopper Cesar kept goal with Silvestre, Morgan, Wes Brown, Patrice Evra and Danny Simpson making up the defence.

Former Swansea player Dyer was joined by Eric Djemba-Djemba, Antonio Valencia, Juan Sebastian Veron and Treble winner Jesper Blomqvist in midfield.

Dwight Yorke and Dimitar Berbatov led the line with the latter showing his class by getting on the scoresheet.

Patrice Evra also netted for United but the scorers for World XI have not yet been sourced.

The Red Devils’ opponents consisted of an array of talent including David Trezeguet, Samir Nasri, David James, Florent Malouda, Bacary Sagna and man-of-the-match Clarence Seedorf.

However, despite the star-studded lineup, reports suggest fans were left somewhat disappointed at the disorganization of the event.

Punters were also fuming after Kaka, Didier Drogba and Roberto Carlos failed to turn up to the match.

Organisers will hope for better feedback in January, with the details of the next fixture still to be announced.

United midfield ace earns 50th international cap in convincing win for his side

Sofyan Amrabat won his 50th cap for Morocco in a 2-0 win over Tanzania on Tuesday.

The defensive midfielder is now 12th on Morocco’s all time appearance list and only 24 caps away from reaching second place on the list. He still has some considerable work to do to reach Nourredine Naybet’s record of 93 caps, however. Although at only 27 years old, the United number four may fancy his chances.

The North African side were supposed to begin their World Cup qualification campaign against Eritrea on Thursday 16th November. However, the game was cancelled due to fears that Eritrean players “would attempt to seek political asylum during trips abroad”, due to the oppressive regime which currently governs the nation.

Nonetheless, the Moroccans got off to a perfect start by winning in Tanzania and currently top group E after the opening round of fixtures.

It was a special match for Amrabat as he won his 50th cap for the World Cup semi-finalists.

The Atlas Lions were convincing winners of the match through goals by Hakim Ziyech in the 28th minute and an own goal by Tanzania in the second half.

Amrabat himself played at the base of a midfield three, being tasked to shield the back four and be a playmaker from the back, as he so often does for his national side.

The midfielder played the whole 90 minutes and received a yellow card in the 65th minute. The North Africans had a horrendous start as Achraf Hakimi missed a penalty in only the third minute of play. This didn’t deter Morocco though and they scored two unanswered goals before Tanzanian defender, Novatus Miroshi, was sent off in the 65th minute to make the job even easier for Amrabat’s team.

The Fiorentina player, who is currently on loan at Manchester United, has had a rough start to his career at the club. The midfielder has struggled to nail down a starting role due to a combination of being played out of position, niggling injuries and poor form on his part.

It was even reported by The Peoples Person that United have already decided they are unlikely to pick up the option to sign him at the end of the season due to his inconsistent form.

This is in stark contrast to the Moroccan midfielder’s usual displays for his country. The player was instrumental in his nation reaching the final four of the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. Sofascore credited him with a 7.3 rating in their highly impressive win versus Brazil in March this year.

The man from Huizen, played the full 90 minutes with a jaw-dropping 91% pass rate accuracy. He also had five tackles, two blocked shots and two interceptions in a great defensive display.

The Moroccan will hope there is a way he can convince Erik ten Hag to include him more frequently in the Red Devils’ starting line-up and somehow transfer his form for his national team to the Premier League side. He will need to if he is to continue to live his “dream” of playing at Old Trafford beyond this season.

INEOS “not concerned” about claims United could be banned from Europe next season - report

It has been reported that INEOS have stated that they are not concerned about a potential Champions League ban should they complete their 25% buyout of Manchester United.

The Peoples Person reported yesterday that UEFA’s multi-ownership rules could see United kicked out of Europe if fellow owned INEOS team, Nice, finish in a higher league position than the Mancunian side.

90min reports that UEFA are now backtracking and putting plans in place to ensure clubs cannot be barred from European competitions due to the fact they share the same owners.

UEFA have previously investigated links between clubs in a similar situation such as RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg in 2017, when both clubs were due to compete in the Champions League.

Despite the fact that it was commented that there was an “unusually high” level of transfer activity between them and similarities in “visual identity”, European football’s governing body ruled both clubs were sufficiently independent.

In fact, they even went on compete against each other in the 2018/19 Europa League group stage.

The website understands that INEOS are standing firm and do not intend to give up Nice or their Swiss club, Lausanne-Sport.

Apparently, INEOS are unconcerned by any “potential conflict with UEFA” when their partial buyout becomes official. The British chemicals company also do not plan to go into a full multi-club ownership arrangement seen in other places.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s company have already been in contact with UEFA and have supposedly received “assurances there won’t be any major issues moving forward”.

UEFA are also apparently conscious of the fact that without adapting current rules, problems of this nature may keep cropping up.

It was reported here yesterday that Manchester City and Girona may also face the same predicament being both under the City Football Group umbrella.

INEOS will be hoping this is the case, because being kicked out of European football, if they manage to qualify, would be a pretty horrendous way to start their involvement in a club where many fans are dubious of any new owners. The Glazers have made sure of that.

Brazil's 'Messi': United aiming to beat Real, Barca and PSG in race for U17 WC ace - report

Manchester United have always been known for their youth policy and their academy has always included the most talented players from across England and the world.

Academy recruitment definitely slowed down post Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement but things have picked up in recent years and the club is showing signs of progress.

The likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have broken through under Erik ten Hag and the club are always on the lookout for the next big thing.

The Brazilian Messi

Their search has taken them to Brazil where teen sensation Estevao Willian is shining bright and has almost single-handedly carried the country’s U-17 team to the U-17 World Cup quarterfinals.

In four games, he has three goals and as many assists and his displays have sparked a war between Europe’s elite clubs with United also among the list.

Popularly known as ‘Messinho’, the 16-year-old has already represented Palmeiras’ U20 squad and has two goals and one assist from five starts across all competitions.

Primarily a right-winger, he can also play on the left wing, and considering United’s struggles on the right, Messinho could just be the long-term solution should United win the race.

He has a release clause of €60 million but it will be far from easy with the player himself said to be a fan of Barcelona while the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are willing to splash the cash for the highly-rated Brazilian.

“Messinho, dreams of playing for Barça,” as reported by Mundo Deportivo. “The latest to join the list of suitors for the great pearl of Brazil has been Real Madrid.

Huge demand for Messinho’s services already

“The white club contacted Palmeiras yesterday with insistence, to find out the player’s situation. In addition, a representation company close to Real Madrid who helped with the Vinicius deal also offered to act as an intermediary with the player.

“Estevao signed his first professional contract with Palmeiras last April when he turned 16, and a termination clause of 60 million euros was set in it.

“PSG already offered the Brazilian club a first offer of 40 million and recently it rose to 50 million. But in addition to PSG, Barça, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea are also after the great pearl of Brazil.”

It will be difficult to complete such a deal with most young South Americans preferring Spanish clubs due to the language barrier and cultural factors but the Red Devils should not give up so easily.

88% pass accuracy, 131 touches: United starlet puts in jaw-dropping display on international duty

Alvaro Fernandez has had an impressive international break for Spain’s Under-21 team. The youngster recently starred in games against Hungary and Belgium during the Under-21 Euro qualification.

The young Spanish left-back didn’t let his side down with two solid performances. The Spanish Under 21s sit at the top of group B with four wins and a draw in five games. The Spaniards have also scored an impressive 14 goals and conceded just once.

According to Sofascore, Fernandez played the full 90 minutes of both matches. The young Spaniard achieved a praiseworthy rating of 7.3 against Hungary on November 17.

The Galician-born full back made three tackles and one clearance on a successful night’s work as La Furia Roja kept another clean sheet.

The 20 year old was also able to show off his attacking threat by completing a jaw-dropping 97 out of 110 passes with a success rate of 88%.

The youngster also delivered seven crosses but only one was successful. All in all, with 131 touches of the ball, the Spaniard was heavily involved in a strong night’s work.

The United player, currently on loan at Granada, also played well against tougher opponents, Belgium on Tuesday night.

The defender scored a decent 6.6 rating on Sofascore and made two clearances, one block and one interception in the game.

The youngster didn’t commit a foul against the Belgians, highlighting impressive concentration and discipline against tough opponents.

Naturally against a better outfit, Fernandez had less touches and passes, but he was still able to boast a great accuracy rate of 86%, or in other words 59 passes from 69 reached their intended target.

The left back was also able to bomb forward and have one shot off target and deliver two crosses and five long balls.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a successful time of late playing senior football away from his parent club, Manchester United.

Fernandez played 42 times for Championship team Preston last season and made a huge impact. The Peoples Person reported that the Spanish player won the team’s young player of the year award for his year’s work in the English second tier.

The former Real Madrid academy product has also made a positive start to life in La Liga with Andalusian outfit, Granada.

Sofascore have regularly awarded the player a score of over 7 this campaign and he scored an impressive 7.9 in Granada’s Copa del Rey win versus Arosa, finishing with a massive 133 touches and four crosses, two of which were successful.

Crucially, for his development, he is playing regular football for the second season in a row and at an even higher level.

It was reported here that the full back had a “bittersweet” game versus Barcelona where Granada grabbed a credible 2-2 draw.

Fernandez played well but was responsible for switching off for the Catalan club’s equalizer. Such experience will do him a world of good, however.

United will be hoping that the left back can continue to develop and build on his strong start to life in Spain and hope he is ready to come back to seriously challenge Luke Shaw for his starting place.

With both Shaw and Tyrell Malacia suffering serious injuries this year, there may just be a space opening up for the young Spaniard from Ferrol.

Legendary Swedish striker backs Rasmus Hojlund to succeed at United

Manchester United’s rich and illustrious history has seen some of the world’s finest players pull on the red shirt to represent the club.

Legendary Swedish striker Henrik Larsson certainly falls into that category having spent half of a season on loan at Old Trafford.

Even though his stay was a short one, Larsson left his mark at the club after impressing staff and fans alike during his short loan spell.

In an exclusive interview with MUTV, the classy forward has spoken on United’s latest Scandinavian striker, Rasmus Hojlund.

Larsson says that he was impressed with his first impressions of the Dane after seeing him play against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League, praising Hojlund’s pace and movement in particular.

“I watched him when United played against Copenhagen at Old Trafford. I liked what I saw. He is a striker with some speed. He was willing to go beyond the opponents’ back four or back three, however you want to see it,” said Larsson.

Although Hojlund is still settling in at the club, Larsson believed the early signs are good and will only improve as relationships with his new teammates develop.

“It’s early to say, but he looks interesting because physically, there is a presence about him.

“It’s going to take some time before he settles in. He’s new to the club and getting used to the other players. But hopefully for United, he can be a good striker,” he said.

Hojlund has played on his own up top and with a striking partner during his early stages at United and Larsson says that his ability to keep the ball will play a major part in whether or not he succeeds at Old Trafford.

“I think if you’re playing up front in any system, one or two, you always should be able to keep the ball, because you’re not going to be with your partner all the time, even if you’re playing two up front.

“So I think that’s the skillset that you need to have as a striker, because more often than not you’re going to have your back towards the goal,” says the Swede.

Larsson, who had the ability to operate with partners or his own, feels Hojlund has the physicality to adapt to both roles and backed the young man to perform on the biggest stage.

“Obviously a lot of teams are playing with three up front, and that means that you’re going to be on your own (in the middle) more often than not. But I think that he has the physical presence to do both things,” he added.

Hojlund has enjoyed much more success in Europe than in the Premier League since his arrival, slamming home five goals in his four Champions League games but is yet to get off the mark domestically.

His next opportunity to get up and and running in the league will come on Sunday as United travel to Goodison Park to face a fired up Everton side after the Premier League’s controversial decision to dock them 10 points for breaking Profitability & Sustainability rules.
