Video: United man inconsolable at full-time after Champions League horror show

Galatasaray's first goal shouldn't have stood as officials miss big rule break

Paul Scholes believes this United goalscorer needs to “take responsibility” for Galatasaray loss - report

"He will get his chances": Ten Hag offers important update on Onana's potential replacement - report
Erik ten Hag has praised his collection of shotstoppers at Old Trafford as a “very good keeper group” in the aftermath of last night’s Champions League debacle, and contended Altay Bayindir would “get his chances” amid uproar about Andre Onana’s performance.
Manchester United’s future in Europe’s premier competition hangs by the thinnest of threads following the calamitous 3-3 draw with Galatasaray in Turkey.
United twice led by two goals – first 2-0 and then 3-1 – only to squander both leads. A two goal advantage is often called the most dangerous lead in football and Ten Hag’s team tried their very best to prove this old adage true yesterday.
Or, rather, Ten Hag’s goalkeeper did.
Andre Onana gifted Galatasaray two goals at points in the game when his team were cruising through an inexplicable combination of errors.
United took an early lead through the irrepressible Alejandro Garnacho, who rifled home a vicious finish with his weaker foot from a tight angle. This was quickly followed by an equally emphatic rocked from Bruno Fernandes’ right boot, putting United in the oh so dangerous position of two-nil up.
A free-kick was then conceded which Hakim Ziyech, formerly of Chelsea, proceeded to hopefully hit through a flagrant gap in United’s wall. Onana took a misstep to his left and the ball went to his right; the Cameroonian stumbling slightly as the ball sailed past him in what should have been a routine save.
The remainder of the first-half became frantic and pressurised as the home team (and fans) were reignited, after United’s excellent performance had largely blunted them.
Ten Hag’s team began the second half in improved fashion with Scott McTominay adroitly finishing off a brilliant team move, largely spearheaded by the right-hand side combination of Antony and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. United, once again, looked in control with a cushion of two goals.
Enter Mr Onana.
Another free-kick was conceded but this time further out. Yet Onana still managed to convert a simple catch from an overhit cross into a goal for the opposition. Arguably, the goalkeeper should have been presented with the Man of the Match award for the home team at full time.
With Galatasaray back in proceedings, against the run of play, for the second time, United began to tire while their opponents found new energy. Shortly after, an equaliser was found through a scorching shot by Muhammed Aktürkoğlu. Even for this one questions were asked of Onana’s positioning, though this pales in comparison as an error to the previous two goals.
United were unable to find a winner as the game reached a frantic denouement, though they had the chances to secure the desperately needed three points. While a draw does not rule out qualification to the knock-out stages, it makes it feel a starkly remote possibility, with United needing both to beat Bayern and for Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen to draw.
An away trip to the hostile RAMS Stadium is difficult at the best of times; it becomes near-impossible when your goalkeeper switches allegiance to make the game a 10 v 12 man match.
After the game, Ten Hag refused to blame Onana directly, instead referring to the collective defensive mistakes involved in each goal. This was nothing more than a manager protecting their player, however, with fans and the media baying for blood in last night’s aftermath.
Nonetheless, the Dutchman did offer fans some potential respite, with the calls for Bayindir to start the next game overwhelming on social media.
Ten Hag said:
“…we are very pleased with Altay, he gets used to the Premier League, he gets used to European football – which is tough when you’re coming from Turkey. But we are very pleased with that process, he’s doing very well.
“He has to be patient, but if he works well, if he keeps his progress, he will get his chances and then he has to take this.”
With Onana looking increasingly likely to depart for the African Cup of Nations in January, Bayindir was always pencilled in to take the starting berth in goal for United at some point.
If Onana’s performances last night continue, Bayindir may get his chance at the number one slot far earlier than January.

United "open to letting" Sunday's hero leave as early as January - report
Manchester United’s game against Galatasaray in the Champions League will be a do-or-die contest and Erik ten Hag’s side need a win to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages alive.
United head into the contest on the back of their most convincing win so far this season — a 3-0 triumph against Everton in front of a raucous Goodison Park crown on Sunday.
The show was stolen by academy graduates Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial also getting on the scoresheet.
Martial’s future
The Frenchman scored his ninth goal against the Toffees and also won the penalty which was converted by the Mancunian.
The France international has been mainly used as a backup for Rasmus Hojlund but it was good to see him deliver with the Dane not fit for the contest.
Hojlund is in the squad for the Galatasaray game but Martial might still get his chance on Wednesday. However, his future seems to lie away from Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old has flattered to deceive since his big-money move back under Louis van Gaal and despite Ten Hag trusting him last season, a combination of poor injury record and lackadaisical attitude meant he hardly ever made the difference.
The former Monaco starlet was on the market in the summer but no team came forward due to his massive wages and his less than stellar fitness record.
Despite the Everton goal, which was his second this campaign, Football Insider have claimed United are open to moving him on in the winter transfer window.
His current deal lasts until next summer with the Reds holding the option of triggering a one-year extension but no calls regarding the same have been taken so far.
“Anthony Martial’s future at Man United is yet to be decided with his contract up at the end of the season, sources have told Football Insider.
United open to selling Martial
“It is believed Man United would be open to letting Martial leave the club in January – if they receive a suitable offer.
“But a well-placed source has told Football Insider that will only happen if the Red Devils can first bring in another striker in the new year.”
With the former Atalanta star yet to open his account in the Premier League, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s entry delayed, Martial might still be of use this season.
Fans still regularly sing his name but it is high time that the French star is allowed to find a new home and United should bring in someone more suited to the demands of being a target man.

United star makes BBC Team of the Week after incredible effort against Everton

"He’s a special player": Ten Hag and Bruno blown away by United gem's Everton display
Manchester United secured their most comfortable win of the season so far, trouncing Everton 3-0 in front of a raucous Goodison Park on Sunday.
The night will be forever remembered for Alejandro Garnacho’s sublime overhead kick, a worthy candidate to win the Goal of the Season award.
The Argentine will rightfully claim all the plaudits but it was Kobbie Mainoo who quietly stole the show, putting in a performance far beyond his years.
Not to forget, the 18-year-old was returning from a major ankle injury and was making his first-ever Premier League start in a hostile environment with the fans baying for blood.
Mainoo stole the show
The England U-19 international’s work rate and desire were top-notch as he covered almost every blade of grass while showing incredible positional awareness.
Whenever the full-back was caught higher up the pitch, the academy sensation dropped in to cover for him while he always asked for the ball in the middle of the park and dropped in as the third centre-back during the build-up.
No wonder manager Erik ten Hag had so many plans for Mainoo only for the midfielder to suffer a freak injury during pre-season against Real Madrid.
United have seen Casemiro struggle this season while in his absence, Sofyan Amrabat has flattered to deceive but Mainoo could be about to solve all of the manager’s headaches.
Now that he is back and put in such a top-class display, the United boss was full of praise for the breakthrough star while tipping him to play a major role in games to come.
“He has a lot of abilities and it was a really disappointing moment in pre-season when he got so badly injured. For him but also for our team because I know he can progress a lot if he plays many of such games as today.
“I know young players will develop very quickly and we thought it was the moment to bring him in. We prepared him properly but he did a great job and now he has to build on this.”
Not only the manager but the skipper Bruno Fernandes was also blown away with what he saw from the academy graduate.
He not only praised his displays on the pitch but also what he has been seeing in training including the teenager’s attitude.
Earns praise from ETH and Bruno
The Portuguese also claimed that learning from the best in the business — Casemiro and Amrabat were proving pivotal in Mainoo’s development.
“I always talk about Kobbie. I think he’s a special player too. What he puts on the game, what he gives to the team, it’s known to anyone in the squad.
“I think he has great players in front of him to learn from because he plays with one of the best in the world like Casemiro. Also Sofyan Amrabat who plays in that position – that is really good and he’s getting everything from them.
“He wants to learn, is eager to learn and I think that’s probably the best capability he has because he wants to learn every time. He’s eager to listen to everyone to get better and better.”
United will now hope he can continue to produce the goods as they enter a pivotal week in their season with a do-or-die Champions League encounter against Galatasaray up next followed by an away clash against Newcastle United.

"Absolute rubbish": Roy Keane blasts Ten Hag for praising United star
Manchester United returned to action with an impressive 3-0 victory against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.
The game will be remembered for an outstanding Alejandro Garnacho strike that opened the scoring and set United on their way to their best performance of the season so far.
Marcus Rashford doubled United’s tally before Anthony Martial’s cool finish killed the game off with just over ten minutes remaining.
Rashford confidently scored from the penalty spot after being handed the responsibility by captain Bruno Fernandes who recognised the need for a boost in the forward’s confidence.
Erik ten Hag praised Fernandes for the gesture but former United captain Roy Keane wasn’t impressed with the manager’s words of praise.
As reported by the Mirror, Keane curiously took issue with Ten Hag for praising his captain, labelling it as “absolute rubbish”.
“He’s giving toffee out there to Bruno for passing on the ball for the penalty. Absolute b***** rubbish. Absolute rubbish coming out with that,” blasted Keane.
It was a change of tact from Keane who had previously praised United’s forwards for winning the game that looked like a potential banana skin.
Keane was also quick to remind United that despite the solid showing at Goodison, they were still way behind the leading lights in the league and need to improve.
“Manchester United are sixth now – if you went back a few years, if you were sixth you’d be embarrassed.
“But obviously they seem happy with sixth. They have a long way to go. Manchester United have to be competing with the best teams,” he said.
Despite Keane’s pessimism, yesterday’s win means Ten Hag’s troops have now won five of their last six in the league, leaving them just six points off the top of the table.
United’s next league game will see them travel to Newcastle in what will be another acid test away from home, with Eddie Howe’s side in good form after dismantling Chelsea by four goals to one on Saturday.

"Real honour": United women's star delighted to be heading out on international duty
Manchester United defender Millie Turner has been called up for England after Millie Bright withdrew through injury.
The uncapped Turner has been a constant for United’s squad for the last five years since they reformed and has started every league game so far this season.
“[I am] delighted to be called into the Lionesses squad,” Turner told club media.
“It’s a real honour for me and a proud moment for my friends and family.”
The greatest honour. Grateful for all the messages, thank you
— Millie Turner (@MillieTurner_) November 24, 2023
Turner received her first senior call-up in September 2020, during Phil Neville’s time in charge of the Lionesses.
She was then called up by England interim boss Hege Riise in 2021, but is yet to make an appearance for her country.
Turner will be joined by fellow United teammates Mary Earps, Maya Le Tissier, Katie Zelem and Ella Toone. According to The Evening Standard, “Turner, who has been capped by the Lionesses at various youth levels, will report for duty with the rest of the squad at St George’s Park on Monday.”
They face Netherlands and Scotland in the Nations League with hopes of Olympic qualification hanging by a thread.
The Lionesses currently sit third in the group behind Netherlands and Belgium.
Bright, who had captained England in the absence of the injured Leah Williamson, withdrew from the squad due to a knee injury and was absent from Chelsea’s Champions League game against Paris FC. Arsenal striker Beth Mead should make a welcome return after missing over a year through injury.
Before the international break, United still have to face Bristol City away in the WSL on Sunday.
