Sleepless nights for Ten Hag as United superstar asked to hang around - report

Manchester United may have solved their midfield conundrum but Erik ten Hag is getting sleepless nights due to the uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeper’s position.

Long-term No 1 David de Gea was close to agreeing a new long-term deal on reduced wages despite numerous error-strewn performances over the course of the last season.

The Dutch manager kept backing him but recent reports suggested that he was so unhappy that the club was forced to rescind their initial offer and put on the table a whole new one that would see further his wages further curtailed.

There is a growing chance that the Spaniard might not remain at Old Trafford and that is leading to a mad scramble for cover.

DDG fallout and other GK options

Dean Henderson wants to leave despite the prospect of becoming No 1 at his boyhood club and join Nottingham Forest but those talks are currently being delayed.

Tom Heaton‘s move to Premier League new boys Luton Town has been blocked and despite interest from other sides, he might be forced to stay.

With so little clarity and the deal for Inter Milan’s Andre Onana still being held up due to difference in valuation, De Gea has been asked to stick around.

Neil Custis of The Sun tweeted, “United not given up on De Gea with his contract up today. Club want him to enjoy his wedding to Edurne this weekend then talk again.

“But he is effectively being asked to hang around in case they can’t get a new number one.”

The 32-year-old is set to become a free agent after midnight and even though he was free to agree a pre-contract agreement with any foreign club, no suitors presented themselves.

Not too many elite European sides want the Spain international as No 1 and even on reduced wages, he is certain to break the wage structure of numerous teams.

DDG could still remain

Saudi Arabian teams have stepped forth but whether the Premier League winner would want to go and play in Asia remains to be seen.

And that is a reason behind why United are relaxed about the whole situation. They are still in discussions with the player and a new deal could yet be agreed as per The Athletic.

“Talks between the two parties are ongoing and it remains in the balance as to whether De Gea will accept the new offer that was put in front of him. There is interest in him from Saudi Arabia.”

This has the makings of a summer saga. De Gea staying as the reserve option is unlikely while United’s current budget scenario will not allow them to spend heavily on a goalie this summer.

Make your mind up time: Man United warned over losing vital deal due to indecision - report

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson‘s proposed move to Nottingham Forest could be on the rocks.

The England international is keen to leave Old Trafford on a permanent basis in search of guaranteed first team football.

Forest were thought to be close to sealing a deal for Henderson, with a bid worth up to £30m tabled, as reported by The Peoples Person earlier this month.

That would certainly represent a good deal for Man United given the circumstances surrounding the former Carlisle keeper.

Henderson has absolutely no intention of staying on at United, while Erik ten Hag needs additional funds to retool his squad for the coming season.

As an academy graduate, the goalkeeper would be a rare chance for the club to generate purr profit on a sale, something vital to their effort to stretch their budget in light of Financial Fair Play concerns.

But the farcical contract situation surrounding David de Gea has complicated matters, with Man United unwilling to sanction any departures between the sticks until a resolution is found concerning the Spaniard.

And now Football Insider claims that Nottingham Forest are considering pulling the plug on the proposal altogether.

While Henderson was their priority target leading into the transfer window, United’s hesitancy in allowing the transfer to go through has forced Forest to seek alternatives.

With the Midland’s club now looking at other targets to potential replace last season’s loanee, Man United risk missing out on a valuable opportunity to bring in much-needed funds.

The good will gained by Henderson while at Forest in the campaign gone is sure to have played a part in the kind of fee The Red Devils were able to negotiate, and they may struggle to procure such favourable terms from another suitor.

Manchester United are running the risk of setting back their summer plans as a result of a lack of decisive action. A conclusion to the David de Gea problem will need to be found sooner rather than later.

Confirmed: Lightning fast United starlet makes shock switch to Blues

Manchester United have confirmed the departure of Ethan Laird, with the fullback set to join Birmingham City.

The 21-year-old saw an option for a further twelve months in his contract triggered earlier this month.

But, as reported by The People Person at the time, Laird remained in the shop window, with the player intent on securing regular first team football.

As a result, the fullback has joined Birmingham City on a permanent basis, having spent several years out on loan.

Last season’s spell at Queens Park Rangers was his fourth loan move and inarguably his most successful.

He quickly established himself as a fan favourite in London, with his direct attacking style of play earning him 32 Championship appearances.

It is somewhat surprising that Laird did not end up extending his stay at QPR, although competition for his signature was rife, with a number of clubs in England’s second tier keen.

At Birmingham, Laird will link up with former teammate and fellow United academy alumni Tahith Chong, who is a key player for The Blues.

The fee remains undisclosed, although Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic claims that United agreed to sell Laird for £750,000 plus “a good sell on clause.”

While Laird clearly possesses plenty of potential, the lack of progress in talks to tie the player down to a fresh deal, along with his need for regular action, probably make a parting of the ways a sensible option.

With Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka returning to form last term, the pathway for Laird into the first team is well and truly blocked, particularly given that Erik ten Hag could be on the look out for another signing at right back in future transfer windows.

Nevertheless, many fans will be somewhat disappointed to see another promising academy graduate leave the club, following on from the recent departure of Zidane Iqbal.

80m or stay: Man United warned Euro giants will not budge on price - report

Benfica has confirmed the price that Manchester United would be expected to pay in order to secure a deal for striker Gonçalo Ramos this transfer window.

Record reported yesterday that the Portuguese club set a transfer fee of €80 million for the 22-year-old.

Also on Tuesday, the Daily Mail claimed that Benfica president Rui Costa believes that United will fork out £69 million for the Portuguese striker.

Ramos has been on United’s radar since his breakout performance at the 2022 World Cup, during which he scored a hat-trick and bagged an assist during Portugal’s 6-1 win over Switzerland in the round of 16.

Last month, United sent some of their scouts to observe Benfica’s 5-1 thumping of Portimonense, a game in which Ramos got on the scoresheet as per a report from The Peoples Person.

This followed a report claiming that the Red Devils were preparing an offer for Ramos, which would see them pay in the range of £70 million-£100 million for the striker.

Should United ultimately decide to submit an official bid for Ramos, they may face stern competition from several other major European clubs who have also expressed interest in the youngster.

A Bola reported that Paris Saint-Germain has identified Ramos as a top transfer target, particularly given the club’s desire to sign a striker.

Benfica on Wednesday rejected an offer of €50 million plus bonuses for Ramos, however, it was not confirmed whether United or PSG were the ones to submit the failed bid.

It was later revealed that Newcastle United have also expressed interest in the player, potentially fanning the flames for a heated bidding war.

With 19 goals and two assists in his 2022-23 Liga Portugal campaign, Ramos effectively carried his scintillating World Cup form into his club career.

Should United wish to get their hands on Ramos, they will have to act fast in order to beat the competition.

Still, given the 22-year-old’s costly price tag, the Red Devils may need to think twice given their tight transfer budget.

"Big big fan": Former United manager eyeing 20m reunion - report

Manchester United finally got their summer transfer window up and running but for the window to be truly successful, outgoings will be required to fund further incomings.

Mason Mount’s deal was announced on Thursday and a medical has been scheduled for Monday but with limited funds at Erik ten Hag’s disposal, further signings will be difficult.

Andre Onana of Inter Milan seems to be the top target in case long-term No 1 David de Gea does not sign a new deal at Old Trafford.

However, United and Inter still remain apart in terms of valuation and the Red Devils are hamstrung due to their inability to move on players who are on huge wages and on long contracts.

Fred on his way out

One player who has been earmarked for a move away this summer is Fred. The Brazilian is set to fall further below in the pecking order now that the Chelsea man is set to arrive.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk star made 56 appearances across all competitions and while it may seem like he did get the chance to play, the Brazil international started just 23 times with only 12 starts coming in the Premier League.

The 30-year-old is reportedly a target for Fulham with manager Marco Silva spotted talking to Fred after the final game of the season in which Fred registered a fantastic assist.

His big-game ability and relentless pressing quality have been used extremely well by Ten Hag but Fred’s passing still remains as weak as ever and that is something Ten Hag wanted to upgrade.

As per The Sun Online, Jose Mourinho‘s Roma have emerged as surprising suitors for the midfielder. Mourinho was the one who had brought Fred to United back in 2018 for €59million.

“Jose signed Fred for Manchester United and he remains a big, big fan of the player. He will not be a regular starter next season which has put Jose and Roma on red alert.

“For Mourinho, Fred would be a key player and someone he’d be looking to build a midfield around. Roma’s midfield is aging and is in desperate need of new faces.”

Roma want Fred but can they afford him?

A lot of ageing players have gone to Serie A in order to extend their professional careers and it has worked out well with former United stars Chris Smalling and Nemanja Matic enjoying their stints at Roma.

Fred could be about to join his former colleagues but whether Roma can afford to pay Fred’s wages remains to be seen.

According to a previous The Peoples Person report, United have valued the Brazilian at £20million and he is currently on £120,000 as per Capology.

The same outlet has also revealed that Paulo Dybala, who is their current highest earner, earns less than United’s midfielder. That could prove to be a major stumbling block.

Almighty slap in the face: Why Chelsea wont want United to pay Mounts add-ons- Report

Manchester United’s first signing of the transfer window is all set to come through the door after they agreed a fee with Chelsea for Mason Mount.

Matt Law of The Telegraph reports that a medical is scheduled for Monday after which the move can be made official, just in time for Erik ten Hag to work with the player in pre-season.

United have agreed a fee of £55 million for the player, with a further £5 million in add-ons which were initially described as “difficult”.

The latest report seems to confirm the same.

It states that if the add-ons are triggered, the sale will end up being “an unmitigated disaster” for Chelsea and will be like an “almighty slap in the face”.

It points to the add-ons being related to the team’s success with Mount.

Add-ons are generally related to wins in competitions, while for some players, they can pertain to individual accomplishments.

Notably, Anthony Martial had a Ballon d’Or clause in the deal negotiated with AS Monaco for his departure.

While the details of the £5 million in add-ons remain unclear, it is likely that United won’t mind paying the extra fee because that would mean Mount’s transfer has been an unqualified success.

For now, this deal looks like it saves face for both parties. United can say they didn’t budge and are still paying £55 million plus difficult add-ons which would anyways make the deal more than worth it.

On the other hand, the Stamford Bridge outfit can say they extracted more from United even after the latter said they won’t negotiate on the third bid of £50 million plus £5 million in add-ons.

Ultimately, if the reports are anything to go by, it is a unique deal where the buyer will hope they end up paying more, while the seller will pray that it doesn’t end up being the case.

"Progressing quickly": Man United to bid for 50m target "tonight"- Di Marzio

With one comes another and that could be the case for Manchester United in this transfer window.

Gianluca di Marzio reports that negotiations between United and Inter Milan for Andre Onana are “progressing quickly” and the first bid may be submitted tonight.

The news comes after growing reports that David de Gea’s time at United is up, prompting the club to prioritise the goalkeeping position.

The Onana interest has seemed the most advanced out of all the targets the club has been linked with and it looks like United are finally acting on it.

Inter are reportedly demanding €50 million for the Cameroonian but there remains room for negotiations.

The Serie A giants are facing difficulties with Financial Fair Play regulations and need to sell assets to balance the books.

In Onana, they have their best option at raising capital. He starred in their run to the UEFA Champions League final where he played a great game against Manchester City.

His ball-playing abilities will be a breath of fresh air and a huge upgrade over De Gea’s tentativeness in possession.

The Spaniard is set to become a free agent after June 30th and with pre-season starting soon, United need to have a confident man in goal.

Dean Henderson‘s future likely lies away from Old Trafford, with Nottingham Forest interested.

Tom Heaton’s potential move to Luton Town was reportedly vetoed by Erik ten Hag as he would have been left without a senior goalkeeper in the event he left along with Henderson.

In Onana, United would be getting the perfect modern goalkeeper who is more suited to Ten Hag’s style of play.

Although the deal remains some way off completion, the first concrete steps towards it by placing a first bid means there could be confidence among the parties that it will eventually happen.

All of a sudden, a transfer window that seemed to be lurching from one failure to another could have two shots in the arm with Onana following closely on the heels of Mason Mount.

From Italy: Mixed reports suggest United's 60m move will not be straightforward

Manchester United are in the middle of a full-blown goalkeeping crisis and Erik ten Hag is scrambling to get the house in order before pre-season kicks off.

David de Gea is close to leaving the club as his contract expires on July 1 with no agreement in sight after the club rescinded their first offer and put a new and much lower deal on the table.

Dean Henderson, who is in Carrington currently, will come face-to-face with the United boss and even though the possibility of being retained remains on the table, the Englishman is desperate to join Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal.

United’s GK issues

There is also Tom Heaton whose proposed move to Premier League new boys Luton Town was blocked by the Dutch boss and he might just be the No 1 during pre-season.

United are scrambling for cover with many reports suggesting that Inter Milan’s Champions League hero Andre Onana is the club’s top priority.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, an offer of €50million plus bonuses is imminent from United, something Inter will then use to secure Romelu Lukaku’s services permanently.

Interestingly, the report also suggested that the Milan outfit are searching for replacements and their list of alternatives contains two of United’s rumoured targets — Giorgi Mamardashvili of Valencia and Brentford’s David Raya.

While the Gazetta report seems to think it is only a matter of time before the Cameroonian joins his former Ajax mentor at Old Trafford, Calciomercato have taken a dim view of the situation.

They mention that United’s current budgetary restrictions owing to last summer’s splurge and the protracted takeover saga means the available kitty will not allow the Reds to bid more than €30million.

Mixed reports on United’s Onana chase

Maybe player sales can improve that figure but currently, there remains a discernible difference in valuations and that will be a major sticking point.

“Inter have no intention of listening to offers below 50 million with the initial valuation which, in any case, pushes the requested amount towards more than 60 million.

“Manchester United, who have already spent over 60 million pounds on the Mount coup from Chelsea and had a budget of “only” 100 million, wouldn’t want to go beyond the 30 million mark.”

The Onana transfer will not be as straightforward as many seem to think and United will have to increase their bid but how long it will take remains to be seen.

Ten Hag to miss out on long-term target who is close to joining arch-rivals - report

The transfer window is now in full swing with teams across the Premier League rebuilding their squads for next season.

Manchester United are close to opening their summer cheque book with the signing of Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount but additional targets remain unclear.

One player who will not be joining the ranks at Old Trafford this season is Ajax centre-back Jurriën Timber.

As reported by Dutch media, Timber is on the verge of joining United’s rivals Arsenal in a deal worth an initial €42millon with the potential to rise to €47million.

Only the formalities of the medical stands between the transfer which looks like further good business from Mikel Arteta’s side.

“Only the medical examination stands in the way of the announcement of the dream transfer from Jurriën Timber (22) to Arsenal,” reports Mike Verweij.

The London club are certainly showing ambition in the market, with Timber following Kai Havertz and Declan Rice through the door at the Emirates for a combined cost of over £200million.

United had shown strong interest in securing the signature of Timber last summer but the deal failed to materialize and United opted for Lisandro Martinez instead.

However, with Timber now on his way to the Premier League it was curious to see United not in for a player that Ten Hag knows so well.

Timber can play at both centre-half and right-back and would have provided good cover for Raphael Varane who, despite his obvious class, struggles to get through a season without periods on the sideline.

Additionally, with Ten Hag not particularly sold on either Aaron Wan-Bissaka or Diogo Dalot at right-back, Timber would have got plenty of game time.

The 22-year-old has emerged as a fine defender during his time at Ajax, with Ten Hag nurturing the player through the ranks at the club.

Given the pair’s strong relationship and United’s registered interest, it looked like Timber’s next logical step would to be to reunited with his former coach at Old Trafford, sentiments echoed by former Dutch defender Jaap Stam.

However, it was not meant to be and United will have to find reinforcements from elsewhere in the market as rivals continuing to bolster their squads with pre-season just around the corner.

Ten Hag blocks England international's PL move amid De Gea fiasco - The Telegraph

At one stage it seemed like all Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wanted was an elite striker to fix his side’s goalscoring woes despite many pointing out the issues with their goalkeeper.

David de Gea might have won the Golden Glove but his season was far from good. The Spaniard was poor as usual with his passing from the back while he was his usual reluctant self when it came to leaving his line.

What made matters worse was the number of errors he committed which cost United heavily as they exited the Europa League and lost the FA Cup final.

United’s GK crisis

Despite his public claims, it seems Ten Hag was in fact working on a plan for the future and most likely it does not include the Spaniard.

The 32-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of this month and if he does end up leaving, it leaves United dangerously short on cover in this position.

Dean Henderson is set to leave and join Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal while reserve keeper Tom Heaton was linked with a move to Premier League new boys Luton Town.

Now The Telegraph have reported that Ten Hag has blocked the Englishman’s exit as he grapples with the possibility of being without a recognised No 1 for United’s pre-season tour.

“Erik ten Hag has blocked a move for second-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton to newly-promoted Luton Town – where he would have been the club’s No 1 – as the fallout from the club’s goalkeeper crisis continues.

“The United manager has told Heaton, 37, that he will not be allowed to leave the club this summer despite the veteran asking the club to permit him to leave in order that he can be a Premier League regular.”

Heaton, who had graduated from the United academy, rejoined the club a couple of seasons back but is yet to make his Premier League bow for the club.

Heaton’s PL move blocked

Ten Hag gave him two matches last season, both in the Carabao Cup which the Reds lifted and the club even triggered the one-year option in his contract so as to not lose him on a free.

The former Burnley No 1 is desperate to play more but it seems United’s goalkeeper crisis could force him to stay on. Despite his lack of game time, Ten Hag had praised his leadership skills within the squad.

United have been linked with a move for Andre Onana of Inter Milan but United still need a reserve keeper. If De Gea agrees to stay on as No 2 then Heaton could yet find himself on the move.

If not, the England international will have to remain as backup at Old Trafford for at least one more season.

The Athetic: Man United agree Mason Mount deal with Chelsea

Manchester United have agreed to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea after weeks of bids and counter bids.

The news comes from The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, who claims that the deal could be worth up to £60m.

As reported by The Peoples Person, United agreed to direct talks with Chelsea to thrash out a deal for the midfielder after a series of bids and counter-bids.

The Red Devils’ third proposal was worth £50m up front with a further £5m in performance-related add-ons.

That was countered with a demand for £57m in guaranteed payments with a further £8m in bonuses.

Man United were unwilling to match that valuation and, for a time, it appeared that Erik tn Hag would be forced to pursue alternatives.

But today’s talks have proven fruitful, with an initial £55m fee supplemented by £5m in add-ons deemed acceptable by both parties.

Both clubs were keen to see the saga end before Mount was due to return to Cobham for training, with the player himself making plain his desire to move to Old Trafford.

The swift conclusion of the deal will allow Ten Hag to look forward to having at least one new recruit ready and waiting at Carrington for the start of United’s preseason preparations.

The Peoples Person has already assessed what Mason Mount can offer at United, with his impressive blend of intensity, creativity, and versatility sure to be a key factor behind the manager’s insistence upon this signing.

Mount could slot into the side in place of Christian Eriksen and even offer a set piece while doing so, but he could equally allow Ten Hag additional flexibility in adapting his team’s pressing structure to disrupt opposition build up patterns.

In any case, Manchester United will now be turning their attentions to other targets, with extra firepower up front and a more possession-friendly goalkeeper high on the agenda.

Man United announce final preseason match to complete grueling 8-game schedule

Manchester United has announced that they will play RC Lens as part of their preseason preparations this summer.

The match will take place at Old Trafford on the 5th of August, with a kick-off time of 12.45pm BST Saturday.

It will be the only tie of United’s preseason to be played at Old Trafford, with nine days separating it from the team’s first Premier League fixture, to be played against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Curiously, the Lens game will take place barely 24 hours prior to Man United’s scheduled preseason with Athletic Bilbao in Dublin.

That opens up the possibility of Erik ten Hag fielding heavily rotated sides a week before the first competitive gameweek, ensuring maximum match fitness thoughout the squad.

A similar situation was also arranged last summer, with games against Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano scheduled on consecutive days a week before the season opener.

United are also likely to split up the squad while on tour in the USA, with a game against Real Madrid taking place in Houston 24 hours after the Wrexham match in San Diego.

As for Lens, they are looking to build upon a fantastic campaign last term, having finished second in Ligue 1 behind star-studded Paris Saint-Germain.

Football Director John Murtough announced the match through official club media, stating that it will be the final match to be declared this summer.

“This is our final pre-season game to be announced,” he said. “With a full schedule of exciting and competitive fixtures scheduled during our summer preparations.

“We have worked with Erik and his coaching staff to create the best opportunities to prepare for the 2023/24 campaign.

“This includes utilising some of the best sporting facilities in the US, as well as gaining valuable match playing time against some strong opponents, including teams we could face in the Champions League next season.

“Having finished second in Ligue 1 last season, just one point behind winners PSG, we look forward to welcoming RC Lens to Old Trafford, in what will be an entertaining, competitive match for our fans.”

With an eight-game schedule this summer, this will be one of the more busy preseasons Man United have had in recent years. Last summer saw six matches played, and Erik ten Hag will be hoping the additional preparation will bode well for his team next term.

Fabrizio Romano says United were "never really in" for 105million man

Teams across the Premier League are getting their summer spending underway as they plot their respective rebuilds for next season.

Manchester United are yet to make an official move in the market but have reportedly agreed to sign Watford youngster Harry Amass.

One man who won’t be joining the ranks at Old Trafford is England international Declan Rice.

Rice is set to make the short move across London to join Arsenal for a fee north of £100million.

Despite the rumours that United were interested in making a late move, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano says a move to Old Trafford was never really on the cards.

As reported by Caught Offside, Romano confirmed that United were never really in the race for the 24-year-old, with Arsenal the only real contenders before late interest from Manchester City.

“Despite what some outlets have saying about Manchester United trying to enter the race, and offering players and so on, I’ve personally never reported Man Utd in the Rice story because I’ve honestly always been told they were never into this deal.

“It was Arsenal, strongly Arsenal and then Man City came in late on before officially leaving the race yesterday,” said Romano.

Erik ten Hag is looking to upgrade his midfield options with discussions still ongoing with Chelsea for the transfer of Mason Mount.

United are expected to meet with Chelsea to thrash out a deal soon and have so far refused to pay over the odds considering their budget issues.

However, with no fee for Mount agreed and lack of clarity with regards to additional targets, United’s lack of strategy in the market is clearly on display once again.

United’s pre-season tour gets underway in just under two weeks time and with rivals getting their businesses done early, Ten Hag may find himself behind when season starts just as he did last time out.

Video: United linked with sensational move for Portuguese wonderkid - report

Manchester United’s summer transfer budget is not as exorbitant as last season and Erik ten Hag knows player sales are the only way to add to that kitty.

FFP restrictions and the lack of progress regarding the club’s proposed takeover means the club will have to tread carefully. They cannot afford to burn the budget by going after one or two high-profile stars.

The club have already faced rejections in their attempts to sign Tottenham record scorer Harry Kane and Serie A winning defender Kim Min-jae of Napoli.

Joao Neves the latest Portuguese wonderkid

The Mason Mount deal is hanging in the balance with the Red Devils expected to approach Brighton for Moises Caicedo should a solution not present itself.

The Ecuadorian is not the only young midfielder being eyed by the Reds as Gianluca Di Marzio has now reported that Benfica sensation Joao Neves is also of interest.

“Manchester United likes Joao Neves. The central midfielder born in 2004 established himself in the last season at Benfica. He has already made his debut in the Champions League and was among the protagonists in winning the championship.”

The 18-year-old’s breakthrough campaign saw him make 20 appearances in all competitions as he registered one goal and one assist.

His versatility saw Roger Schmidt use him all across the park, mainly as the defensive or central midfielder, but also up front or on the wings.

He is currently taking part in the U21 European Championships with Portugal and even scored a superb volley against Belgium to secure progress to the next round.

United eyeing young stars is a welcome return to form

He is valued at €10 million as per Transfermarkt and his Benfica deal is valid until 2028.

It is great to see United once again getting linked with top young stars across Europe, a staple under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson but lost in subsequent years.

That trait is once again being reawakened, as seen in United’s deals for Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo and Hannibal Mejbri. The Reds have already been linked with a move for the Turkish Messi — Arda Guler.

Even if Neves does not end up joining United, the fact that scouts have once again woken up to the concept of signing highly-rated stars means United are back in business.

"He's been unbelievable" - Treble winner heaps praise on United stalwart

Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge at Manchester United was largely full of positives and highlighted the Dutch manager’s ability as a coach.

A dramatic change in culture, coupled with some clever tactical amendments saw many under-performing players regain their touch and Ten Hag will be happy with his maiden campaign at the club.

One player who benefitted immensely from Ten Hag’s tactical nous was defender Luke Shaw.

Shaw enjoyed a fine campaign, playing not only in his natural left-back role but covering at centre-half as well.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, former United defender Wes Brown heaped praise on the Englishman, particularly praising his ability to double up at the heart of the defence.

“We know him as an excellent left-back but he’s been unbelievable (at centre-back),” Brown told United’s media team.

The Treble winner knows all about playing at full-back and centre-back for United, having done so on many occasions during his spell at the club and says Shaw is now a more than capable option in both positions.

“As a full-back, you’d probably only play there a few times until the other defenders all come back (from injury). But because Luke has played so well, he’s been, pretty much, the next-choice centre-back.

“I’m not sure if he played there as a kid, but he just seems to read the game very well. He’s good in the air, his positioning is good and getting better after a few games,” said Brown.

Shaw enjoyed some outstanding games playing at centre-back this season including the Manchester Derby win at Old Trafford and the FA Cup semi-final victory against Brighton.

The high profile nature of the games he stood out in highlights the England man’s temperament when performing on the big occasions.

Shaw’s ability to play both positions will no doubt come in handy next season with Ten Hag hoping to bridge the gap between United and title winners Manchester City.

United takeover: Sir Jim Ratcliffes bid is dead- Bloomberg journalist

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid to acquire Manchester United is reportedly ‘dead.’

In an interview with the YouTube channel United View, Bloomberg journalist David Hellier stated:

“I’ve been told by sources that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid is dead.”

The British billionaire’s bid was not for 100% of the club and would keep the Glazers in charge in some capacity.

Hellier claims that the deal’s structure has led to a great deal of backlash from the minority shareholders.

“This is due to minority shareholders’ threat of legal action against the Manchester United board.”

This significant update puts Sheikh Jassim in pole position to become United’s new owner.

Yesterday we covered Bloomberg’s exclusive report, which claimed that Qatar were quietly confident that they have won the bidding race against Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Journalist Ben Jacobs added to this by tweeting:

“Nine Two Foundation more positive following their improved fifth offer, but there’s also still scepticism over the Glazers’ intentions.”

“Those close to the group view the most likely outcomes as a Qatar win or a no sale & are still in the dark.”

Fabrizio Romano: Man United "very serious" about "top option" with crucial "next few days"

Manchester United’s move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana looks to be picking up speed as Erik ten Hag sets about retooling his squad ahead of next season.

As reported by The Peoples Person, talks are expected to take place over the Champions League finalist.

And now Fabrizio Romano has confirmed United’s serious interest, writing in his daily column that his “Understanding is their interest is now very concrete.

“Let’s see if they will bid in the next few days, contacts are taking place and United are very serious about it, but it depends also on David de Gea. Erik ten Hag has been a big fan of Onana for some time, but Inter want Inter want €50/55m plus add-ons, so it’s not an easy deal. If De Gea leaves, Onana is one of the top options for United, but it’s not advanced yet.”

David de Gea’s contract is set to expire tomorrow. A renewal offer is on the table still but, as reported by The Peoples Person, his terms would be drastically reduced from the £375,000-a-week deal he has been on for the last four years.

A deal was agreed on the Spaniard’s side, but a further reduction sought by the club has thrown that renewal into disarray, with De Gea now looking very likely to depart.

Also in the running for Onana was thought to be Chelsea, although incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly keen on keeping Kepa Arrizabalaga as first choice at Stamford Bridge.

And Romano claims that, while The Blues remain in the market for a goalkeeper, they are looking at other options between the sticks as a result.

“Chelsea have also been linked with Onana in the past, but for now their plan is different,” Romano says. “There is a strong possibility that Kepa Arrizabalaga will continue as Mauricio Pochettino’s number one ‘keeper, and Chelsea will sign a backup option.

“They like Anatoliy Trubin at Shakhtar Donetsk – he’s one option who could come in to provide competition and replace the departing Edouard Mendy. That’s what Chelsea have in mind at the moment – a young talented goalkeeper, rather than to spend crazy money on bigger names like Onana or Mike Maignan.”

With United now appearing to be the only suitors for Onana – and the player having a good relationship with Ten Hag – the only obstacle now should be agreeing a deal with Inter Milan.

While an initial €50m fee should not be much of a problem (pending De Gea’s departure, of course) the Nerazzuri’s demands in terms of bonus payments could take the transfer to a potential value of around €60m.

As reported by The Peoples Person yesterday, those bonus payments could be a major point of contention, particularly given the ease with which the Italian media are claiming Inter will want them to be triggered.

Given the pressing need for a new goalkeeper, one would expect Manchester United to endeavour to reach an agreeable compromise with Inter Milan, although from the club’s handling of negotiations with Chelsea over the Mason Mount deal, it can be inferred that The Red Devils are keen to avoid paying a ‘United tax’ on any future transfers.

'Matter of time': Tier one outlet gives massive update on United takeover

Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani is reportedly confident of winning the bidding war for Manchester United.

According to Bloomberg, people around Qatar are quietly confident that their bid has trumped Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s offer.

The English billionaire proposed an offer that would keep the Glazers in charge of a minority share.

However, the report claims it did not sit right with some of United’s shareholders.

“The structure of Ratcliffe’s deal has provoked opposition from current minority shareholders in Manchester United, who would not be bought out.”

“A top-three shareholder sent a letter to Manchester United’s board warning that the independent directors could be at risk of being sued for recommending a bid that favours one set of shareholders over another.”

The Qataris believe it is only a matter of time before the club makes an official announcement.

Bloomberg also goes on to talk about United’s transfer budget.

“Man United have about £260m available for new signings during the summer transfer window, but FFP rules mean not all of the amount will be spent.”

The takeover process has entered its final stages, with fans eagerly anticipating the Glazers’ exit.

However, the report states that the Glazers could change their mind last minute and decide to remain at the club.

“But with the official sale process heading into its eighth month, the Glazers could make a last-minute decision to keep hold of the English Premier League club, accepting funds from an outside investor to renovate the club’s dilapidated stadium and training facilities, one of the people said.”

“They asked not to be identified discussing confidential information.”

First domino falls: Man United fire sale can finally begin with 2 stars set for axe - opinion

Manchester United’s process of senior team outgoings this summer could finally be about to begin as transfer dominos around them keep falling.

The Telegraph reports that West Ham United are interested in Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire, although the latter’s wage demands are likely to prove restrictive to any potential deal.

United were considering a player-plus-cash deal for Declan Rice but Arsenal look to have sealed the England star’s arrival already.

However, the Gunners’ acquisition of Rice could prove to be the starting point of United’s culling of the squad this summer.

The Hammers are expected to receive a fee north of £100 million for Rice, which means they might splash the cash on Scott McTominay at the very least, if not Maguire.

McTominay could fill the Rice-shaped hole in West Ham’s midfield and United might benefit by getting their asking price of £40 million fulfilled.

The Scottish midfielder is one of the players the club has made available for transfer and his palatable wages mean United could finally take a step towards rectifying their poor selling record.

Newcastle have also been credited with an interest in his services, although their signing of Sandro Tonali means that that door could well be closing now.

Therefore, West Ham’s sale of Rice has opened an unexpected opportunity for United.

It is a different case with Maguire. The United captain has become expendable for Erik ten Hag and despite the club being open to offers, it is unlikely they find a taker for his £200k/week wages.

Still, West Ham, flush with cash, plus manager David Moyes’ admiration for the player makes the London club one of the more realistic destinations for his signature.

United could benefit even more, indirectly, from Rice’s sale. If West Ham United go for Joao Palhinha of Fulham, then the Cottegers’ reported interest in Fred could intensify, further boosting United’s transfer budget.

Therefore, while United were never serious contenders for Rice, his sale to their Premier League rivals could yet benefit them by supplementing their own transfer budget. The first domino has fallen. Can United take advantage?

Sky Sports: United open talks with PL side over dream Mason Mount alternative

All of Manchester United’s attempts to procure signings for manager Erik ten Hag during the summer transfer window have not panned out the way they would have liked.

The club has seen their approach for Tottenham striker Harry Kane fail due to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s stance of not selling to a direct rival.

Then Bayern Munich came in and hijacked United’s move for Serie A champion Kim Min-jae of Napoli while the club have also failed to successfully prise away Chelsea’s Mason Mount despite three bids.

Mount alternative in place

It has been reported by The Peoples Person that both clubs will meet to discuss the way forward but United currently have no plans to budge from their final bid amount.

It has already been reported that United are prepared to walk away and are eyeing long-term target Moises Caicedo of Brighton who is also a Chelsea target.

TalkSPORT have now revealed that the Red Devils have spoken to the Seagulls regarding a summer move for the Ecuadorian.

“Brighton’s Moises Caicedo is another option, should the Red Devils fail in their attempts to lure Mount to the club. talkSPORT understands United have spoken to the Seagulls about Caicedo.”

Interestingly, Sky Sports have chimed in to add further credence to this report and have mentioned that the 20-time English league champions are set to make a formal bid this week.

“Manchester United are expected to formally approach Brighton with regard to midfielder Moises Caicedo after making initial contact this week.”

United open talks

This is huge news as the Brighton star was identified as the long-term defensive pivot by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but the Glazers opted against backing the Norwegian.

Caicedo is the perfect Casemiro alternative and is versatile enough to play as the No 8 and in defence should it be required.

The 21-year-old Ecuador international has an £80m price tag slapped on him with Chelsea set to be ahead in the race but their stubbornness regarding Mount could end up benefitting United in the long run.

Arsenal had failed to sign Caicedo last January with the player even admitting at one stage that he dreamt of playing at Old Trafford like his compatriot and former United star Antonio Valencia.

United face shock competition for 69m striker perfect for Ten Hag - report

Manchester United’s pursuit of a centre forward will likely define the summer transfer window for Erik ten Hag. With the club priced out of moves for top targets Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen, attentions have turned to other targets, with Goncalo Ramos among them.

As reported by The Peoples Person earlier today, a €50m-plus-bonuses offer was turned down by SL Benfica for the Portugal starlet.

There are suggestions that Man United may have been the bidding club, although Paris Saint-Germain are also credited with an interest.

But reports from later in the day have suggested that there could be yet another threat to Ten Hag’s attempts to bolster his frontline, with Newcastle emerging as a potential destination for Ramos.

Whether or not it was indeed The Magpies who submitted the rejected bid is as yet unclear, although FootballTransfers insists Eddie Howe is keen to add the 22-year-old to his club’s ranks.

Backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, Newcastle United certainly have the financial clout to challenge the two European heavyweights for the forward’s signature.

Newcastle are preparing for their first campaign in the Champions League in two decades, and have already signalled their ambitions by signing Sandro Tonali from AC Milan for £70m, while they remain in talks for Southampton fullback Tino Livramento.

They already splashed the cash up front last summer by signing Alexander Isak for a reported €70m from Real Sociedad, but are keen to add more firepower during this transfer window.

Benfica have set an €80m price tag on their star striker, which equated to roughly £69m. While still a princely sum, it does make Ramos considerably more affordable than many of the top strikers currently on the market.

He is certainly well within the range of Gulf-backed clubs PSG and Newcastle, pending FFP in the case of the French club.

Manchester United would also be expected to be well in the mix at that price point, although competing with the aforementioned pair could dampen their ambitions of signing Ramos, particularly with a number of other positions in need of reinforcement.

David de Gea’s contract situation has vaulted the goalkeeper position to a priority concern, while Erik ten Hag remains hopeful of signing Mason Mount from Chelsea to add to his midfield. United may need to rely on selling well in order to cover all of their most pressing areas of need, with the ongoing takeover saga still looming over the club.

United women's assistant coach set to leave as mass exodus continues - report

Today, it has been reported that assistant coach Martin Ho is to leave Manchester United Women.

The news was first reported by BBC’s Emma Sanders via Twitter.

Martin Ho joined Manchester United Women’s senior set-up at the start of the 2020/21 season after Glen Harris retired.

Previously he had worked for the Under-21’s alongside Charlotte Healy but rumours suggest he is looking to step up to a manager’s job.

He has been instrumental in the development of the team that saw so much success this season, reaching an FA Cup Final and qualifying for the Champions League for the first time.

Ho has been a fan-favourite at the club, noted for his often animated and passionate pleas to officials on the touchline.

Having worked with some of these players through the youth set-up he will no doubt be a big loss to the team.

From the outside, United looks like a club in turmoil despite their exciting campaign this year.

It looks like Ho could be the latest blow as the team lose stars Ona Batlle and Alessia Russo as free agents after failing to secure contract extensions for them.

United are yet to make a signing in this transfer window and now they could be faced with the added task of finding a new assistant coach.

The club have been linked with a number of players, most recently Brazil’s Geyse.

Video: Roy Keane says United could have won more if they had signed this player

The greatest period in Manchester United rich history saw some of Europe’s finest players represent the club under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Two of the Fergie’s captains during his time at United were Gary Neville and Roy Keane, who have been reminiscing about old times on Neville’s ‘Overlap’ show on Sky Sports.

In the second episode of the series, the pair catch up with regular Sky colleague Jamie Carragher and special guest Stuart Pearce in a London Pie and Mash shop.

One particular conversation centered around Fergie’s desire to sign Pearce and debate then raged about where that would have left Neville’s United career.

Pearce claimed Ferguson was that keen on securing his signature that he personally drove to Nottingham as then Forest manager, Brian Clough, refused to take calls regarding a deal for the England international.

“So he (Ferguson) drove to to Nottingham and sat in the car and waited for him (Clough) to come out the front door because he wouldn’t take calls about me,” recalled Pearce.

Neville then admitted he would have found it difficult to force his way into the United first team due to the quality of Pearce and Dennis Irwin, the other full-back at the club.

“I wouldn’t have got in at United if you’d had gone United. If you went to left back, Dennis (Irwin) would have gone to right-back and I’d have been done!” said Neville.

Then enter Neville’s former captain, Keane, who jumped in with some typically quick-witted, cutting remarks.

“We could have won more, then!” he quipped.

Keane then continued to lay in to his former teammate with Pearce and Carragher laughing along.

“You’ve always been a lucky b——d, I’m telling you. That’s spoilt my dinner!

“You on one side (talking to Pearce) and Dennis on the other. Proper full-backs,” said Keane

Neville took the jibes in good spirits with the chemistry between the pair still good to see.

As it turned out during his playing days, Neville didn’t do too badly, representing United over 600 times and winning 20 trophies during his career at United which spanned almost two decades.

Real Madrid join United in race for Serie A striker asking price revealed - report

Real Madrid have made contact with Inter Milan to inquire about Lautaro Martinez, a player who Manchester United has expressed interest in signing given the club’s urgent need to acquire a natural striker this summer.

CalcioMercato reported that while Inter do not wish to part ways with the Argentinian this summer, the Italian club indicated to Madrid that it may be willing to entertain an offer of around €100 million (approximately £86 million).

According to Football Espana, the Galacticos’ club president Florentino Perez insists that he will not “be held ransom” to the demands of other clubs, however, circumstances may tempt Madrid to make a move for the Argentinian nonetheless.

Martinez could prove to be an ideal replacement for Madrid’s former first-choice striker, Karim Benzema, who departed for Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad at the end of last season.

Like Man United, Madrid’s squad also lacks firepower up front, with no natural strikers in the Spanish side’s squad.

United have been linked with Martinez since before the conclusion of the Premier League season.

At that time, it was reported that Inter could be tempted to part ways with the 24 year old striker for a price of £60 million given their current financial situation.

Currently valued at around €85 million (Transfermarkt), it now appears as if Martinez could cost well beyond his given market value due to the rising interest in the player from various clubs.

Joining the race for Martinez is Chelsea, a team that he has reportedly expressed interest in joining despite the prospect of playing no European football this season.

Despite being included in United’s transfer shortlist, it looks as if the Red Devils will be priced out of a move for Martinez.

United has also been pursuing Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, however, the club will need Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to lower his demanded transfer fee of £100 million in order for a deal to be reached, The People’s Person previously reported.

Given the club’s tight transfer budget, it appears as if the Red Devils will not be making any major waves in the transfer market at least until Friday, when the 2023 fiscal year comes to an end.

United unlikely to announce new transfers before this weekend for crucial reason - report

June 30 is set to be a crucial date for Manchester United, acting as the conclusion to a week of key financial developments.

This date marks the end of the 2023 financial year, meaning that the club’s full-year balance sheet will need to be completed as Man United’s takeover saga continues.

This follows the release of United’s third quarter financial results to March 2023 today and the club’s annual general meeting of shareholders on Wednesday, which is set to take place in New York.

The Manchester Evening News reported that it has been suggested to United’s 12 board members, including six Glazer siblings, that any announcements regarding the sale of the club or new financial investments be delayed until after June 30.

Given the media storm and widespread protests surrounding the club’s potential takeover, financial sources warned that any takeover-related announcements could detract focus away from other key financial events that are set to be discussed this week.

It is believed that the conclusion of the fiscal year on June 30 is the reason why United has chosen not to grant exclusivity in the ongoing sale process, contrary to earlier reports that the club was considering providing this exclusivity to Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani.

While the stalling bidding war for the club has done much to fuel fans’ frustrations, dissatisfaction also comes as the club remains static in the transfer market.

Regarding the club’s ongoing efforts to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, sources have claimed that United football director John Murtough’s “hands are tied” due to United’s tight transfer budget.

After rejecting United’s first three bids for Mount, Chelsea countered by requesting £58 million plus £7 million in add-ons for the 24 year old.

The People’s Person reported that United rejected Chelsea’s offer to hold face-to-face negotiations for Mount, adding that no higher bid will be offered for the player.

Transfer frustrations extend beyond the attempt to sign Mount, however, with several of United’s priority transfer targets being zeroed in on by other clubs while the Red Devils remain static.

Bayern Munich has reportedly submitted a €70 million (£60m) bid for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, who has long been viewed as a potential signing for United given the club’s lack of options up front.

United have also seemed to concede defeat in the race to sign Napoli defender Kim Min-jae, once again losing out in a race against Bayern.

Big blow for Ten Hag as United target arrives for medical with CL giants - report

The summer window is now in full swing with teams across Europe trying to get their preferred signings over the line.

Manchester United are yet to make a substantial move in the market with Erik ten Hag desperate for reinforcements in order to close the gap on title-winning Manchester City.

One player that will not be joining the ranks at Old Trafford is Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram.

As reported by Italian media, the Frenchman has agreed to sign for Champions League finalists Inter Milan and arrived for his medical earlier today.

Thuram had been previously linked with a move to Old Trafford but United failed with their attempts and the 25-year-old has chosen Serie A as his next destination.

The French striker will move to Inter on a free transfer, representing a fine bit of business for the Italian club.

United’s lack of movement in the window is mainly due to the lack of clarity surrounding this summer’s budget due to the ongoing sale of the club.

There is growing frustration amongst fans who are waiting to see who United are going to make a concrete move for in the coming weeks.

Thuram wouldn’t have made a dent in whatever budget United are working with and would have provided Ten Hag with another option at the point of his attack.

It’s clear that United need players with Ten Hag struggling for options at times last season and the club need to be more proactive in a market where bargains are there to be had.

Manager and fans are still no closer to knowing who the new owners of the club will be with the takeover continuing to rumble on.

Pre-season is just over two weeks away and Ten Hag will be hoping his board can get at least a few deals done before the squad fly out to the US to kick off the pre-season tour.

Man United drop massive hint over identity of clubs new number seven

Alejandro Garnacho looks likely to be handed Manchester United’s iconic number seven shirt with fans unable to purchase his current shirt number from the club website.

On Tuesday morning, United released their new kit for the upcoming 2023/24 campaign with player names and numbers available to order through their official online store.

Interestingly, supporters cannot order a shirt featuring ‘Garnacho 49’ on the back.

There is a drop-down menu on the site that lists all of the players and their corresponding numbers available to buy, yet with Garnacho seemingly missing from the list.

Further adding to the speculation, fans will notice a gap between ‘Martinez 6’ and ‘Fernandes 8’ which suggests the number seven has yet to be assigned ready for next season.

The shirt has gained legendary status at Old Trafford with legends such as George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham all previously sporting the jersey.

Now the number is up for grabs and remains unclaimed following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in December.

Garnacho recently liked a tweet posted by brother Roberto featuring an edited image of his younger sibling wearing a United shirt with number seven on his back.

The Argentine winger has worn number 49 – seven times seven – ever since graduating from United’s academy, impressing in his breakthrough season with five goals and five assists in 36 appearances.

“On Twitter Garnacho ‘liked’ a message from a fan calling on the 18-year-old to be given the club’s iconic No 7 jersey that is currently vacant,” The Express reports.

Reports suggest Erik ten Hag feels Garnacho is ready to take the coveted jersey and will snub another potential candidate, Jadon Sancho.

“Manchester United are considering making Alejandro Garnacho their new number seven as his stratospheric rise continues.” MEN reported. “Garnacho would become the first teenage recipient of the No.7 since Ronaldo in 2003.”

Sporting director flies in to complete deal with Man United for Andre Onana - report

Inter Milan’s sporting director Piero Ausilio has flown into England to close the deal to bring goalkeeper André Onana to Manchester United for a fee of €50 million.

This is according to Corriere della Sera.

News broke earlier this afternoon that United had pulled out of a new deal with David de Gea that would have been worth £200,000 a week.

They have made a new offer at a much reduced rate amid reports that a Saudi Arabian club has offered the Spaniard a lucrative deal.

United have shown a great deal of interest in Onana but it was reported that they were waiting until De Gea had decided his future before placing an offer.

That now appears to have changed, if the Italian outlet is to be believed.

“Sporting director Piero Ausilio is in England in these hours to close the deal,” Corriere reports.

“Who would have ever thought, even just a few months ago, that the prized piece of the Inter transfer market would have been the goalkeeper signed from Ajax, in the face of general skepticism and after a troubled year?”

The outlet then makes mention of Onana’s nine month doping ban “for mistakenly taking a drug bought by his wife”

“When he landed in Milan last summer, few believed he could make a difference. Or even just play starter.

“Many saves, some decisive. Courage … A special quality.”

It was recently reported that Inter fans had started a petition to prevent the Nerazzurri from selling their new hero, who was a big factor in their reaching the Champions League final this season.

But the club’s financial situation means they need to sell before they can buy, with last season’s loanee Romelu Lukaku considered a must.

For Erik ten Hag, it will be a chance to reunite with a player with whom he worked at Ajax and endured something of a tormented relationship.

New kit launch drops major hint that United have made first signing of the summer

Manchester United launched the new 2023/2024 home kit this morning (Tuesday) with fans excited to see the latest design in the flesh.

The kit launch is a highly anticipated day in the calendar for fans who get the chance to buy the replica shirt with their favourite players name on the back.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Marcel Sabitzer’s is a surprise name still available for fans to print on the back of their new 2023/24 home shirt.

This is the strongest indication yet that the Austrian may be extending his stay at Old Trafford beyond this season.

The hint is even bigger given the fact United’s other loan signing last season, Wout Weghorst, isn’t available for print.

Sabitzer is listed on the official website with the number 15 shirt he was given last season after joining in January, to cover Christian Eriksen’s injury.

There has been no official communication from the club as to whether Sabitzer’s move from parent club Bayern Munich will be made permanent but it’s believed the player would like to stay in Manchester.

The German champions are reportedly open to doing business and Ten Hag is a long standing admirer of the 29-year-old.

United are in the market to bolster their midfield options with Chelsea man, Mason Mount the number one target.

If Sabitzer was to stay, along with the addition of Mount, Ten Hag would have good depth in the middle of the park next season.

The Austrian played in 18 games for United last time out and chipped in with three goals, one of which helped United to the FA Cup semi-final.

His experience and high energy style is suited to the Premier League and given a full pre-season with the United squad, he would provide a useful option for United who will be, once more, fighting on four fronts next year.

United set to drop transfer bomb on Guardiola as City star "requested by" Ten Hag - report

Manchester United’s midfield suffered as a result of long-term injuries and suspension issues last season, something manager Erik ten Hag is desperate to change.

The club are open to selling much-maligned pair of Scott McTominay and Fred while loan signing Marcel Sabitzer is heading back to Bayern Munich.

Christian Eriksen suffered from injury and struggled to match the intensity of the opposition in the big games while Donny van de Beek looks set to end his Old Trafford nightmare.

Phillips has struggled at City

So far, United’s moves in the market have not borne fruit with three bids rejected for Chelsea’s Mason Mount while soon-to-be free agent Adrien Rabiot has reportedly agreed a new contract with Juventus.

Fichajes have now come up with the transfer rumour of the summer, claiming that Ten Hag has greenlit an approach for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.

During his Leeds days, the club had tried to sign him only for the player to sign for their city rivals.

The Englishman hardly featured for Pep Guardiola’s side in their Treble-winning season, starting only four games and incidentally, City lost two of those games.

The 27-year-old had impressed back when he was a Leeds United player but since his €49million move to Manchester, Phillips has been more than happy to sit on the bench.

“Despite being one of the great signings of Manchester City at the time, Kalvin Phillips has not finished having the desired impact at the Etihad Stadium under the orders of a Pep Guardiola.

“Precisely that lack of minutes regularly has sparked all kinds of rumors including a possible transfer to Manchester United that would be very interested in taking over the services of the 27-year-old British footballer, being willing to put on the table an offer that would be around 40 million euros, thus Manchester City recovering a large part of the investment made at the time.

“The signing of Kalvin Phillips would be requested by the Dutch coach Erik Ten Hag , who would be convinced of being able to bring out the best version of the English footballer at Old Trafford.”

Phillips an unlikely choice

Despite his lack of minutes at club level, England manager Gareth Southgate has been more than happy to keep selecting him and the City man even made two appearances for the Three Lions in Qatar.

Phillips mainly plays as the defensive pivot but can also double up as the No 8 if required. Ten Hag is said to be confident that he can help the midfielder regain his old form that saw him earn a move to Manchester in the first place.

As per Transfermarkt, the England international is valued at €32million and has a contract that is valid until 2028. However, considering his lack of minutes, United should not pay anywhere close to that aforementioned amount.

A lot of superior players can be purchased for less than the quoted fee and the fact that he is a current City star and a former Leeds United player makes this move look even more ludicrous.
