United's latest price slash proves club has learned nothing from rivals - opinion

On its own, Manchester United’s summer transfer budget is not expected to be as substantial as it was last summer and the club will need to sell well if they are to supplement that figure.

Erik ten Hag is desperate for additions across the board with a goalscorer his topmost priority with Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen among his preferred choices.

But a move for either is expected to cost a bomb and with other transfers in the pipeline, a fair few might have to be offloaded to raise enough funds in order to support the manager in the market.

One player who has simply not been used enough by the Dutchman and seems to be on his way out is Anthony Elanga.

Elanga on his way out

The Swede, who made his debut under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and shone under interim-boss Ralf Rangnick, has started only seven times across all competitions this season and managed to chip in with two assists.

The academy graduate can play all across the frontline and on the wings and was highly-rated during his academy days but he has simply not impressed the current United boss enough.

According to The Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils are even considering lowering his price to ensure the player leaves in the summer.

“Manchester United have halved their asking price for winger Anthony Elanga to £10million.

“United had initially intended to loan Elanga, 20, next season but his peripheral status has convinced the power brokers to consider offers for the Swede.”

The Sweden international is valued at €25million as per Transfermarkt and his United deal expires in 2026. There is no way the club should take such a big hit on his value.

This has been a major problem for the club since Sir Alex Ferguson retired — they have simply failed to extract as much money as possible from outgoings unlike their main competitors.

United just cannot sell players for a decent fee

Liverpool and Chelsea have kept selling well while Manchester City sold four of their Academy graduates to Southampton for a combined £38,500,000, none of whom were established first-teamers at the time nor were they international players.

United cannot afford to be this lax, especially in a summer where they are expected to sell well in order to raise as much money as possible to help Ten Hag.

Elanga was being monitored by the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and Everton to name a few with many more tracking his situation and United should try and extract as much money as possible if they do decide to sell him outright.

There were even calls to send him out on loan and allow him to regain his form and confidence considering his potential but Ten Hag might have other ideas.

Here we go: Fabrizio Romano confirms Diogo Dalot has signed new United contract

Diogo Dalot has signed a new contract with Manchester United, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

The right back has enjoyed a good start to life under Erik ten Hag, and began the season as the Dutchman’s undisputed first choice.

Contract talks have been ongoing for several months after United triggered a twelve-month extension clause back in December.

Dalot would have been free to negotiate a free transfer with a foreign club had they not done so.

But leaving is the last thing on the Portugal star’s mind now, with his stay now extended until 2028.

According to Romano, Ten Hag sees Dalot as a key member of his United squad going forward.

“Understand Diogo Dalot has signed new contract at Manchester United, here we go confirmed — official statement to follow,” tweeted the reliable reporter.

“New contract will be valid until June 2028. Ten Hag really wanted Dalot to stay as part of the project.”

Aaron Wan-Bissaka looked to have taken over as Ten Hag’s first-choice right back in recent weeks, with the former Crystal Palace man starting the vast majority of the Red Devils’ Premier League matches since January.

But with a new contract, Dalot is certain to be part of the manager’s plans, while Wan-Bissaka continues to be linked with a move away and only having one year remaining on his deal.

Man United are known admirers of Jeremie Frimpong, and may look to move the £50m 2021 signing on to free up space in the squad.

But equally likely is the notion that both Dalot and Wan-Bissaka have proven themselves as players under Ten Hag, with each fullback clearly coming along very well under the Dutchman’s tutelage.

Fabrizio Romano: United target's agent declares player is "ready to leave"

Brentford could risk losing Manchester United target David Raya on a free transfer next summer.

David de Gea could be leaving the club this summer after a possible new deal has not yet been signed.

It has been reported that the keeper has agreed to new terms but the club’s hierarchy is yet to confirm the extension.

Naturally, this means Erik ten Hag needs to consider a new starting goalkeeper, and with Tom Heaton and Dean Henderson’s futures undecided, United are lacking in numbers between the sticks.

David Raya has been linked numerous times to the club but his asking price is a step too far as reported by The Peoples Person.

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on where the Spanish international’s agent stands on the current situation.

He recently tweeted ‘EXCL — David Raya’s Futbol21Pro agent Jaume Munell: “If Brentford does not lower the price tag for David Raya this summer, we’ll be ready to leave as free agent in one year.”

‘Raya and his camp expect clarity over future after Brentford signed Flekken but still ask for £40m.’

Other clubs mulling over a potential bid for the goalkeeper include Tottenham Hotspur, who are expected to lose their regular starter Hugo Lloris this summer.

It is unclear whether Man United will pursue a deal for Raya, having prioritised signing a striker this summer.

A midfielder and a defender are also high on the list, but signing a goalkeeper will be up there at the top as the club will have limited options going into the next season.

Ten Hag will focus on the transfer situation after the FA Cup final this weekend, but with no clarity over the transfer budget, it is hard to predict what will happen.

This relegated star would single-handedly solve alarming United weakness - opinion

Manchester United have plenty of work to do this summer, with Erik ten Hag looking to build upon his successful first term at Old Trafford with additions to the squad. With a limited budget and an ongoing takeover saga, the Dutchman may need to rely on picking up a bargain or two, with the sides relegated from the Premier League offering up some interesting opportunities.

Previously, The Peoples Person took a look at a couple of players in Leicester City’s squad who could potentially add something to United. Here, the focus is on Southampton, and one man in particular.

It is clear that James Ward-Prowse is the best player in Southampton’s squad by quite some distance, with the Englishman having had huge influence on The Saints since making his way into the first team over ten years ago.

He has earned eleven caps for the Three Lions while playing for a usually unfancied side and has been a mainstay in the Premier League for a number of years. At 28 years of age, such a player should not be dropping down into the Championship. There is even an argument to be made for bringing him to Old Trafford.

The Obvious

Man United have completed their Premier League season having scored no goals from direct free kicks and are one of just two top flight sides to do so in 2022/2023. Ward-Prowse, conversely, has scored three himself. From indirect free kicks, the Red Devils scored three to Southampton’s eight. United’s corners have improved this season, bringing in seven goals, but again, the team holding up the table has twice as many.

Effectively, Ward-Prowse’s delivery could potentially be worth around an additional 15 goals to Ten Hag, which would immediately flip United from among the lowest scorers in the top half of the table (with 58) to the fourth most proficient in the division with 73. That is the sort of difference that would be all but guaranteed to translate into more points on the board.

Of course, when considering indirect free kicks and corners, there is a big element of set up and preparation beyond Ward-Prowse to factor in. Knock-downs from the likes of Armel Bella-Kotchap and Che Adams played a huge part in creating goalscoring opportunities after the initial ball in. One would hope, however, that the coaches at Carrington would be able to make use of the dead-ball specialist’s delivery just as well as his current club.

The Problem

The real question is over what Man United would stand to lose by having James Ward-Prowse in the starting eleven over a player more effective in open play, and the most obvious position in which the Saints’ man would fit into the current set-up would be alongside Casemiro, at the expense of Christian Eriksen.

Ward-Prowse does offer an astonishing level of durability which the Danish playmaker lacks, having started 150 of Southampton’s last 152 Premier League matches and rarely being substituted. That he has been so consistently available given his role as a highly energetic player, busy in disrupting opposition moves and making interceptions, is all the more impressive.

But there is no doubting that Eriksen is by far the better player in open play, with his progressive passing having been key to Ten Hag’s maiden season in English football. In terms of creativity and taking set pieces out of the equation, Eriksen makes 2.48 shot creating actions per 90 minutes compared to Ward-Prowse’s 1.66 (Fbref), while still maintaining better completion rates and getting on the ball more frequently. It is simply no contest, and downgrading United’s possession play further in order to enjoy a boost in set piece efficiency is unlikely to be the favoured direction of the manager or the fanbase.

Were Ward-Prowse to sign for Man United – or any club of a similar standing, for that matter – he would almost certainly do so as a squad player. Naturally, that would limit the total value of his dead-ball threat over the course of a season, given he would be taking fewer set pieces to begin with. Were the Southampton man only to be brought into the squad to cover Eriksen, there is no way in which that could be deemed valuable.

The Potential

But Ward-Prowse has shown versatility throughout his career, having played under various managers in various systems. While he has predominantly been a central midfielder in the last couple of years, he has also featured on the wing, where he can press opposition fullbacks, similarly to how Bruno Fernandes has been asked to do under Ten Hag, and at right back, where he has more space to whip in crosses.

This season, Mikel Arteta, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, as well as a handful of other top coaches in Europe, have blurred the lines between fullbacks and midfielders in a substantial way. Trent Alexander-Arnold, in particular, could provide a roadmap for the next stage of Ward-Prowse’s evolution as a player.

Having initially struggled this season, Liverpool flicked a switch in its final months to go on a run that had some Man United fearing their spot in the top four. Key to that run was Klopp’s use of Alexander-Arnold as a false fullback, inverting into midfield and forming a double pivot with Fabinho ahead of a temporary three-man backline. In this respect, there is little difference between this and Arteta’s use of Zinchenko from the leftback position at Arsenal.

Where Klopp’s approach diverged was in taking advantage of his right back’s quality distribution. The infield movement of Alexander-Arnold often left the player in so much space that he may as well have been taking a free kick. There are some similarities between this approach and Ten Hag’s use of Daley Blind in his last Ajax side, with the former United player regularly found in line with holding midfielder Edson Alvarez and having full view of the opposition third.

If Ward-Prowse were able to adapt to such a role as he enters his peak years, he would be a far more valuable player to Manchester United. The Red Devils have been linked with several right backs going into the summer transfer window, as well as a new midfielder or two. A player who could cover both roles while also offering Ten Hag a tactical tool that does not yet exist in his squad would be a boost, before even getting into the Southampton man’s set-piece threat.

It is not unheard of for players to adapt their game to make the most of their changing talents as they develop under different coaches and, even at 28 years of age, Ward-Prowse may just need a certain Dutchman to show him a new way to play. But unless there is an eagerness to take to such an approach on both sides, there would be little point in bringing the set-piece Saint to Old Trafford.

United place World Cup winner at top of centre-back shortlist - report

Manchester United remain interested in Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard.

Recently, The Peoples Person reported that he was open to leaving the German club this summer.

His contract runs out next summer which means there are limited options to sell him for a reasonable price.

Bayern could risk losing him on a free transfer if they are determined to keep him with the player unlikely to sign an extension.

Erik ten Hag is eager to sign a new right-back with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot sharing the role this season. Many players have been linked with a transfer to the club, most notably Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Get French Football News (via L’Equipe) have hinted that he could be used as a centre-back at United.

The article states that the club “have placed the World Cup winner at the top of their shortlist of central defenders”. Pavard has played most of his career as a right-back but can operate in the centre of defence if required.

For Bayern Munich, since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival, he has often played in both roles proving that he can operate anywhere in the backline.

The article concludes by mentioning that the 27-year-old “is prioritising a move that would see him playing regularly as a centre-back, his favoured position”.

It would make sense to recruit someone who is adept at both roles and United have already been linked with a move for Ten Hag’s former protégé Jurrien Timber.

Even he can fulfill both roles. United currently have Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire as centre-backs with Luke Shaw filling in at times during the course of the campaign.

Ten Hag does need to remove some players from the squad in order to increase his summer transfer budget and stay on the safe side of financial fair play regulations.

It wouldn’t be unusual for Ten Hag to play a full-back at the heart of the defence considering his successful experiment with Shaw.

Versatility could play a huge part if the club are indeed serious about signing the French international.

The futures of Maguire and Lindelof currently remain up in the air while Wan-Bissaka has also been heavily linked with a move away.

Pavard is an option who could excel in United’s chase to win major trophies after already winning plenty in his career including the Champions League with Bayern and the World Cup in 2018 with France.

"Parting of the ways" expected between United and fan-favourite - report

Manchester United finished the Premier League season in third place and thus confirmed their presence in next season’s Champions League group stage.

However, the season is not yet over as the FA Cup Final looms on June 3 and the chance to preserve the club’s legacy of being the only British club win the historic Treble.

A rampant Manchester City stand in the way and Erik ten Hag will be hoping for a superlative performance from his players at Wembley on Saturday.

Martial has under-performed yet again

One player who will not be taking part in that historic game is Anthony Martial with The Peoples Person confirming that the United No 9 has once again been ruled out through injury.

The Frenchman’s poor injury record coupled with his general lazy attitude while on the pitch should ideally mean the game against Fulham will be his last game in a red shirt.

The United boss trusted him after a fine pre-season and the 27-year-old has once again let down yet another United manager.

According to Football Insider, the former Monaco starlet will be let go should the Red Devils receive a satisfactory offer.

“Man United are happy to let Anthony Martial leave the club this summer, sources have told Football Insider. It is believed the Red Devils will hold out for the right fee for the 27-year-old – who is already in-demand as the 2022-23 campaign draws to a close.

“A well-placed source has told Football Insider that all parties consider a “parting of the ways” to be for the best,” the report added.

ETH looking to add more firepower and let go of Martial

Martial has managed nine goals and three assists and while he has impressed in a few games, those have been too few and far between and mostly the manager has not had the luxury of being able to count on him when needed.

The France international has suffered from a variety of injuries — hamstring, hip, back and Achilles — and has missed a total of 28 games during the season.

Fans have always been patient with regards to the Frenchman and have never allowed their support to waiver but he has rarely come close to fulfilling his immense potential during his eight-year stay at the club.

United will be looking to increase their summer transfer budget through player sales and Martial is valued at €15million as per Transfermarkt.

United will do well to get more than that for a player they paid €60million for back in 2015. Ten Hag has already spoken of his desire to add more firepower up front to support Marcus Rashford.

Papers convinced €75m keeper has played last game for club and is United bound

Porto goalkeeper and Manchester United target Diogo Costa may have played his last game for the Liga Portugal giants.

The Premier League is Costa’s most likely destination according to the Portuguese media.

Costa has been a long-standing target for United, with doubts mounting over David de Gea‘s suitability for Erik ten Hag’s brand of football.

Yesterday, The Peoples Person covered a report which detailed Erik ten hag’s comments that a new goalkeeper is needed.

Ten Hag revealed that modern football demands a modern goalkeeper capable of playing out from the back – this is something De Gea struggles with.

Costa excels at playing with his feet and distributing. He is also adept at claiming crosses and commanding his box.

The Porto shot-stopper is widely seen as someone who can elevate United’s performance levels.

A Bola reports that Costa’s “cycle” at Estádio do Dragão is coming to an end.

The 23-year-old is expected to take the next step of his career in the Premier League, with Manchester United the most interested party.

United, as per A Bola, are willing to pay Costa’s €75m release clause. It may become a reality that the Porto man will join his Portuguese compatriots Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot at the Theatre of Dreams.

A Bola relays that it’s likely Costa said his goodbyes after Porto’s game against V. Guimarães, given his emotional state and facial expressions.

He is represented by Jorge Mendes, who has extensive connections in the English football scene. Mendes was recently asked about his clients and whether any of them are preparing to make high-profile moves this summer.

The superagent said, “I am sure very important movements and deals will happen this summer. I can’t reveal which ones… even if some of them have been already discussed.”

Costa certainly fits the bill!

"£100m": Rio Ferdinand names 4 players Man United must sell to boost Ten Hag's warchest

Rio Ferdinand believes that Manchester United can give Erik ten Hag’s transfer war chest a £100m boost by selling just four squad players.

Speaking on his Vibe with Five podcast, the legendary defender outlined the club’s need for investment and, realising that United may need to raise funds to fully revitalise the squad, he went on to name players that could leave in the summer.

“McTominay hasn’t played much football, not as much as he would like,” Ferdinand began. “If I was him as a young player I would probably start assessing that situation and start having real hard conversations with the club: ‘Do you see me as part of it or not?’.

“If I’m that far down the pecking order I would start looking and I don’t think he will have a problem finding a club, he is a very good footballer and he can add a lot of value.”

As reported by The Peoples Person, Scott McTominay is of interest to a number of Premier League clubs, with Eddie Howe of Newcastle United a known admirer.

Ferdinand went on to reiterate the potential of a Harry Maguire departure, having previously said the United captain needs to move of from Old Trafford.

“Maguire has to look at a new option for himself,” he said. “Unless he says he’s happy to be third or fourth choice.”

As with McTominay, Maguire does have admirers, with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United having been linked with exits.

Rio Ferdinand’s next two suggestions appear somewhat more left-field in terms of the sort of fees the club could expect to bring in.

“Elanga, maybe,” he mused. “He is not getting a chance. Martial has proved that he can’t stay fit. I think if you got rid of those four, there is a £100million sitting there. Elanga isn’t getting the football he deserves. He did well when he came in and still isn’t getting a chance. Big players in front of him but he wants to be playing first team football.”

While Anthony Elanga did enjoy some decent moments during Man United’s nightmare 2021/2022 campaign, his quality has been up for debate for a long time. There is also the issue that the only offers that have reportedly come in for the Swede to date have been loan proposals. But as a quick player enjoying home-grown status, and on relatively reasonable wages, it is not unthinkable that a club could offer Elanga a permanent exit.

Anthony Martial‘s case is somewhat different. It is difficult to see a club willing to gamble on a player who has missed 53 matches due to injury in the last three seasons, particularly when that player commands a £250,000-a-week contract. Man United would do well to get any sort of fee for him based on those number, and will likely be better off waiting for his contract to expire next year.

D-day looms for Mason Greenwood decision at Man United - report

Manchester United’s transfer priority for the summer window is adding goals to the squad with manager Erik ten Hag admitting that he needs another top striker.

In an interview with The Times, he pointedly remarked that the particular profile of player might either be an incoming transfer or someone from within.

United already have that talented striker in Mason Greenwood but the academy graduate had been suspended by the Red Devils last year following his arrest on charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour.

ETH has no say with regards to Greenwood’s reintegration

Ten Hag was posed the question by Henry Winter and while he did admit that the 21-year-old has the ability to occupy the striker’s position with considerable skill, it is not the Dutchman’s decision about whether to reintegrate him into the squad.

The aforementioned charges were dropped in February this year after key witnesses withdrew from the case and the club are currently in the middle of a full-scale internal investigation.

And now Simon Stone of the BBC has tweeted that United will deal with the future of the player once the season ends on June 3 after the FA Cup final.

“Once Saturday is out of the way, there will be a focus on the issue around Greenwood and how Man Utd deal with it,” he tweeted.

Greenwood remains suspended at the moment and The Peoples Person has reported on the progress of the player’s situation regularly.

Greenwood situation’s resolution post FA Cup final

The forward has interacted with his teammates and Ten Hag and even the club hierarchy during the middle of the investigation.

There will be considerable backlash from the women’s department at the club should he be reintegrated along with a large section of the fanbase.

There have been rumours that the player might be forced to quit United in a bid to kickstart his career with moves to China and Italy mooted.

United will need to tread carefully before arriving at a decision with their reputation at stake.

Midfield revolution: 2 Relegated stars Ten Hag must consider - opinion

The final day of the Premier League season ended with high drama, as Leicester City’s miserable season ended with relegation. Many clubs will have been keeping a keen eye on possible transfer targets, with players likely to agitate for a transfer rather than drop down a division. With Manchester United in dire need of midfield reinforcement, two Fox’s player will have been of particular interest.

James Maddison is undoubtedly the standout player to have suffered relegation this term, having registered 19 goal involvements in 30 Premier League appearances.

The Leicester City man is a fine direct set-piece taker, which is certainly an area in which United need improvement, having scored none of their shot on goal from free kicks during the just-ended league season.

His versatility would enable Erik ten Hag to play him in midfield, behind the striker, or off either wing, with the Dutchman having shown a penchant for shifting the pieces of his midfield and forward line around around to gain an advantage.

The trouble is that recent reports have indicated that the Dutchman’s sights are firmly fixed on Maddison’s international colleague Mason Mount, and it would be difficult to imagine both players turning up at Carrington this summer.

It is tempting to speculate that United could turn their attentions to Maddison should their pursuit of the Chelsea academy graduate fall through. But it would appear that Ten Hag is drawn to Mount’s qualities in terms of pressing and tactical acumen, rather than the obvious creativity offered by the Leicester playmaker.

This may not be one to rule out completely, but Ten Hag seems to want a different profile of player to add to his offensive midfield options.

Deeper in midfield, Youri Tielemans comes with the added bonus of being available on a free transfer this summer,

The Belgian playmaker is capable of some excellent passes and has scored a few screamers since moving to England. His ability to progress the ball from deep and playing in teammates in the final third could ease the burden on Christian Eriksen, without whom United have struggled to build play through the midfield at times this season.

Eriksen suffered a lengthy injury back in January and had shown signs of fatigue both before said incident and since coming back into the team in April.

But while Tielemans would provide cover for the Dane, there have been concerns over his work ethic and defensive positioning throughout his time at the King Power Stadium. Additionally, the only suitable partner for the 26-year-old currently in the United squad is Casemiro, and there are no other positions in the team in which Tielemans would be an obvious fit.

The question therefore becomes twofold. Firstly, how much are Man United willing to pay a player to play second fiddle to Christian Eriksen? And secondly, is that a role that would even interest Youri Tielemans?

Both James Maddison and Youri Tielemans have shown their qualities in the past and either could be a good addition to the Manchester United squad. Ultimately, whether one or both of the pair end up at Old Trafford next season will come down to what the manager is looking for and what the club can agree.

Club confirms United legend's shock resignation from plum job

Manchester United legend Edwin Van der Sar has resigned from his role as Chief Executive Officer of Ajax.

Van der Sar joined Ajax’s board in 2012 before being appointed CEO in 2016.

This season, the Eredivisie giants have endured a tumultuous time. They finished third in the league and missed out on the Champions League for the first time since 2009.

Ajax’s third-place finish was only enough for the Europa League play-offs.

This term, the club sacked former manager Alfred Schreuder, who was Erik ten Hag’s replacement.

John Heitinga took up Schreuder’s job.

In a statement released by Ajax, it has been confirmed that Van de Sar will transfer his duties to the Board of Directors from June 1, 2023 onwards.

The former goalkeeper has been requested to remain on board until August 1 to oversee a smooth transition.

Van der Sar said, “After almost eleven years on the board, I am done. We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period.”

“I am very grateful for the people I have met and worked with during my second career at Ajax, and what we have achieved and been through together. I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things.”

“It doesn’t feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign.”

Ajax Supervisory Board Chair Pier Eringa confirmed that Van der Sar was asked to say, but he resisted attempts to extend his stay at the club.

Eringa reiterated that the 2022/23 season should not define Van der Sar’s tenure at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Ten Hag explains why winning FA Cup and stopping City are so important

Erik ten Hag has spoken with excitement and enthusiasm ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

This year’s FA Cup will be decided by the two major Manchester sides for the first time in the competition’s history, leading organisers to already engrave ‘2023: MANCHESTER *blank*’ onto the trophy.

Ten Hag’s side has seen success at Wembley during the Dutchman’s debut season at the helm of United, lifting the League Cup trophy at the end of February after defeating Newcastle 2-0.

The FA Cup is acknowledged as the oldest national football competition, in turn making it widely watched and revered across the globe.

Speaking to Henry Winters of The Times, Ten Hag recognised the achievement of having already played at Wembley and recollected memories from his childhood in the Netherlands watching the famous English competition.

“It was a fantastic experience. I feel very lucky to go to Wembley. Wembley! I said to the players already of what I experienced as a child. Nowadays all the games are broadcast,” the United manager said.

“I remember growing up you maybe get 20 minutes’ highlights late at night, maybe the semi-finals or when your country way involved then you get the full game broadcast. But the FA Cup final was always fully broadcast in the Netherlands. That’s the reputation of the FA Cup. It’s something special.

“I remember Manchester United against Brighton [in 1983], Arnold Muhren played! I’ve seen many FA Cup finals. The tradition … I’m really looking forward to it.”

Mühren was one of the first non-British and non-Irish footballers to play in England and enjoyed a three-year spell at Old Trafford in the 80s. He was transferred back to Ajax, for whom he had played prior to joining United. Mühren also has a strong tie with Ten Hag’s boyhood club, Twente, having won the Netherlands’ national cup (the KNVB Cup) as part of their squad in 1977.

After completing his nostalgia trip, Winter pressed Ten Hag on the more serious issue of squashing City’s hopes of matching United’s legendary 1999 Treble-winning campaign.

Asked about whether he is aware of how important it is for fans, the Dutchman retorted back to Winter in his usual brilliant, laconic style:

“Yes, I know. But it’s not about stopping Manchester City, it’s about us winning the FA Cup. We want to build our own legacy and era.”

United have the chance to continue building a new era under Ten Hag’s stewardship on 3rd June at 15:00 BST.

World Cup winning United target wants to leave European giants - report

With the transfer window fast approaching, clubs across Europe are plotting their summer spend.

Manchester United are one of the clubs expecting a busy transfer window with plenty of incomings and outgoings on the cards.

Erik ten Hag is hoping for reinforcements that will allow him to build the foundation for a title charge next season.

As reported by The Peoples Person, one player linked with increasing the quality at Old Trafford is World Cup-winning full-back Benjamin Pavard.

Ten Hag is believed to be looking to upgrade his options at right-back and the Frenchman could be emerging as a viable option.

As reported by Sky Sports, Pavard has told Bayern Munich that his wish is to leave the German Champions in the summer.

Pavard’s contract runs out in 2024 but he is pushing for a move in the upcoming transfer window.

Bayern, who are typically savvy in the market, are expected to agree to the sale to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer.

Should United decide Pavard is their man, they will face competition for his signature with Barcelona reportedly circling.

The 27-year-old made his move to Bayern after winning the World Cup for France in 2018.

Since then he won the Bundesliga four times on the bounce, as well the coveted Champions League crown in the COVID season of 2020.

No doubt Pavard would be seen as an upgrade for Ten Hag, who has flip-flopped between Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot at right-back this season.

United’s summer budget is still an unknown due to the ongoing sales process of the club initiated by the Glazer family back in November.

Ten Hag will be desperate for a conclusion to the sale in order to get some clarity on the funds he has available to him in the market.

Winning PL boss tells Ten Hag exactly how to beat Manchester City on Saturday

Manchester United will bring the curtain down on their marathon season next week, with the small matter of the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

Erik ten Hag has enjoyed a strong first season in charge at Old Trafford, having secured Champions League football for next year, as well as winning the Carabao Cup.

An FA Cup win would elevate the campaign to an exceptional one and wound underline Ten Hag’s pedigree as an elite coach at the top level.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side will go into the game as favourites having blown away all before them in the second half of the season, to win the Premier League with relative ease.

Furthermore, City are on course for the Treble, having reached the Champions League final for just the second time in their history.

United will be desperate to stop City scooping the big three trophies and repeating the unique feat achieved by Sir Alex Ferguson‘s side in 1999.

Despite their excellent form, City failed to win their last two Premier League games, drawing to Brighton and losing to Brentford on the last day of the season.

Brentford’s win meant Thomas Frank’s side won both their fixtures against City this campaign, the only side to do so.

As reported by 90min.com, speaking in his post match press conference, Frank shared the secrets to his side’s success.

“It is very clear this is the best offensive team in the world so you need to defend very well. We managed to defend very well but not only in the low block, I think you could see today we were brave with high pressure throughout the game.

“I think that’s a big thing. I think if you only defend with a low block, you will struggle,” explained Frank.

The Brentford boss also said his side had to be brave in their approach and make sure they were alive at set pieces to give them the best chance for success.

“That braveness, which I love about my team, I love that. Set pieces are also pretty important,” said Frank.

United are not famed for their goals from set pieces this season, having scored just 12 times from dead ball situations, but it will surely be something Ten Hag has his eye on for next week.

United have "reserved the No.7" shirt as they aim to secure World Cup winner - report

A third-place finish secured in the Premier League and the chance to add another piece of silverware coming up, Manchester United under Erik ten Hag are certainly on the way back up.

But the Dutchman will be aware of the need to strengthen if his side are to take the next step and challenge for the league title and fight it out with the big boys in Europe.

And the addition of an elite goalscorer is the need of the hour after the Red Devils finished the season as the lowest goalscorers among the top six sides.

United need a goalscorer

The rumour mill seems to suggest that Tottenham talisman Harry Kane is the manager’s dream target while Serie A champ Victor Osimhen of Napoli is also on the list.

However, United are keeping backup options ready with El Nacional (via Football365) sensationally claiming that Ousmane Dembele of Barcelona could be a potential option.

The Frenchman’s current deal with the Catalan giants expires next summer and so far, negotiations over a new and improved deal have not amounted to anything much.

The 26-year-old is said to be “assessing the options he has on the table” with United and arch-rivals Liverpool “incredibly interested” in taking advantage of his “ridiculous” €50m release clause.

The World Cup winner is extremely versatile and can play on both flanks, as a centre-forward and even as a No 10 and his pace and ball carrying ability can prove quite devastating for opponents.

In 33 games across all competitions this season, Dembele has netted eight times while he has also chipped in with seven assists.

Liverpool vs United for Dembele

While the France international seems to be a “personal request of Jurgen Klopp”, United are reportedly offering him a sensational gift should he move to Old Trafford.

United are said to have “reserved the No.7” shirt, worn by legends like Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham, for the former Borussia Dortmund star.

Dembele’s injury record still remains patchy and he has missed 17 games this season. It seems unlikely that a player Barca paid £130m for in the summer of 2017 would be allowed to leave for so less.

Sensational stories linking United to superstars are certainly on the rise and with the transfer window edging closer, fans will need to take such stories with pinch of salt.

United linked with incredible star from relegated side, could be a bargain

Rumoured Manchester United target James Maddison could be the first Leicester City player to leave the club following relegation from the Premier League.

The Peoples Person has previously covered reports saying that the club are interested in the midfielder, who can play on the left wing.

A versatile player who will attract many clubs after a decent individual campaign scoring 10 goals in all competitions.

It wasn’t enough to keep his club up after they were shockingly relegated on the season’s final day.

A couple of days ago, Ben Jacobs reported on Twitter that he will leave this summer as he looks to find his next club.

The tweet said ‘Expectation is James Maddison will leave Leicester even if they stay up. ‘

‘Newcastle and Spurs remain interested and have been for some time. #NUFC tried last summer. Whether Spurs advance anything will depend on new manager and sporting director.’

‘A handful of other Premier League clubs also monitoring Maddison. #AFC have other priorities for now, but are aware of his situation. Same for #MUFC.

‘Clubs looking at Mason Mount could turn more seriously to Maddison if they fail to land the Chelsea midfielder.’

It will no doubt be a hot race for the England international who will be keen to kick on now he has entered his prime. He is a very talented player who has caught the attention of many of the top Premier League clubs in recent years.

With Man United also showing an interest in Mount, the Leicester City midfielder could be seen as a perfect alternative who could be cheaper.

The Mirror has reported that Maddison will be one of the first players to leave the club this summer.

With Arsenal United and Newcastle all showing an interest in the player at some point in the season, it remains to be seen what will happen going into the summer market.

Kieran Maguire, an academic who heavily researches finance in football has recently posted a tweet showcasing where Leicester could struggle now they’ve been relegated.

The Tweet showcases that Leicester are seventh in Premier Leagues wages with teams who have all competed in Europe above them.

With relegation, it means they’re going to have to cut most of their squad to be a financially stable club in the Championship.

It would be simply impossible for all players to remain on the wages that they are now, meaning plenty of players will be leaving. United could be handed a boost with Maddison, who will be available for a cut-price deal.

Youri Tielemans who is leaving on a free transfer could also make his way to the red side of Manchester after previously being linked.

Ten Hag has some big decisions to make with how he wants to shape his squad for next season. It will no doubt be another busy summer for the manager who will want to make sure plenty of transfers are happening with the expectation of some players leaving.

No smoke without fire: PL club is in talks to sign United’s samba star - report

Fulham are interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Fred this summer as they look to add to their options.

The Peoples Person reported earlier today that the London club could sign the midfielder after manager Marco Silva was spotted chatting to him in unusual circumstances.

It was a curious encounter between the pair after the full-time whistle as Man United prepared to leave Old Trafford.

Many fans wondered the reasoning behind this was, as the two do not have any previous connections. Immediately there was speculation that it was to do with a possible summer transfer, but no reports of interest before yesterday had emerged.

But now it seems that the London club are interested, as the Manchester Evening News reports that he is indeed a transfer target for them.

“Intermediaries have proposed a possible move for Fred, 30, to Fulham as United want to recruit a younger midfielder,” the outlet reports.

The MEN notes that Fulham have signed many Portuguese speakers since they were promoted last year, suggesting that Fred would fit in well at Craven Cottage.

The Brazilian has recently extended his stay at United by a further year after the club activated a clause in his contract. His deal will expire in June 2024, meaning the club only has limited chances to sell or risk the possibility of losing him on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old has plenty of experience. He came to United as a fringe player but worked his way into the starting XI, regularly starting under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. This season, he has been used less, but his importance has been growing ever since the start of the campaign.

Whether he would welcome a move to Fulham could be something Silva was trying to ascertain in that post-match chat.

It has certainly been a surprising season for the Cottagers, who were promoted from the Championship. A good summer transfer window, including a great deal to sign Andreas Pereira from United, has helped keep them up.

Fulham never looked likely to be going down once they gained momentum in the league and they were definitely one of the season’s overachievers in the Premier League.

Christian Eriksen admits he angered Cristiano Ronaldo at United for this reason

Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious exit from Manchester United remains one of the biggest talking points form Erik ten Hag’s first year in charge at the club.

The Portuguese star left Old Trafford under a cloud, after publicly airing his views on the issues at the club and his lack of playing time.

No doubt Ronaldo carried major weight in the dressing room and a parting of the ways allowed Ten Hag to focus on the players who are now pulling in the same direction.

Summer signing Christian Eriksen has revealed an exchange with Ronaldo, around the taking of a free kick during their short time together on the pitch.

As reported by The Daily Mail, in a free-kick masterclass for the Manchester United website, Eriksen explained how he clashed with Ronaldo over who pulled rank on dead balls.

“I did take one (instead of Ronaldo), I think, but he wasn’t too happy with that!” said the Dane.

Eriksen continued by saying the current players have much more diplomatic conversations on the pitch when it comes to taking free kicks.

“Now at the club we have multiple takers who, if he’s had a good day, he’s going to have it,” he said.

The 31 year old confirmed the trio of players who lead the free kick taking at the club as himself, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.

“With the three we have now, it’s where we are on the pitch, how people are feeling, so it’s like ‘you had the last one, I’ll have the next one,” said Eriksen.

Ronaldo does seem to have left behind a dressing room that is much more coherent under the guidance of Ten Hag.

The Dutch boss his improved the attitude and culture at the club and will be desperate for one more big push from his players next weekend in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

On the other hand, Ronaldo has suffered further turbulence since his move to Saudi Arabia after his new side Al Nassr failed to win the league title they were favourites for, finishing in second place behind Al-Ittihad.

One of biggest flops in United’s history plotting sensational PL return - report

Manchester United signed off their first league season under Erik ten Hag with a win at home against Fulham, yesterday (Sunday).

The 2-1 win secured third place for United, in what has been a season of progress under a new regime.

However, despite a strong maiden campaign, Ten Hag is acutely aware that reinforcements are required if United are to challenge for the title next season.

Additionally, clubs in and around the top of the Premier League will also be looking for additions, with multiple teams aiming to chase down Manchester City.

As reported by the Daily Star, one player linked with a sensational return to the Premier League, but who will definitely not be linked with United, is Marseille forward Alexis Sanchez.

The former United man is out of contract in the summer and is keen on having one more crack at the English League.

After leaving United having been widely regarded as a huge failure, Sanchez had a stint at Inter Milan before moving to Marseille, where he has regained some form.

Sanchez signed for United in the winter of 2018 and was expected to take the club to the next level under Jose Mourinho.

Unfortunately, for Sanchez and United, things didn’t turn out that way with the forward only showing brief flashes of his talent.

The physicality of the Premier League looked too much for the Chilean at United, who struggled to get going during his time at Old Trafford.

Arsenal are one of the sides linked with a potential reunion with their former star, who was one of the best players in the league under Arsene Wenger.

At 34 years of age, Sanchez will bring a wealth of experience to his next team and could prove shrewd signing on free transfer, depending on his wage demands.

United legend tells Ten Hag exactly how he can beat City on Saturday

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has advised Erik ten Hag to adopt a different tactical approach to stun Manchester City at Wembley on June 3 when the two sides meet in the FA Cup final.

United will have the opportunity to stop Man City’s treble charge. The Citizens have already been crowned Premier League champions and are in the Champions League and FA Cup finals.

Pep Guardiola’s men have the chance to join United as the only other English club to win a treble. Sir Alex Feguson’s all-conquering 1999 team is the only team in England to achieve this incredible feat.

There is, therefore, a lot on the line for the Red Devils and according to Rooney, Ten Hag should seek to surprise Man City.

Rooney wrote for The Times and said that the usual method of putting 11 men on the ball and hoping to catch City on the break might not work – this will only allow City to focus on breaking down the low block while not being primarily concerned about being hurt offensively.

Rooney wrote, “My strategy would be to go the other way and ask City to do something different. I’d try something similar to a tactic José Mourinho sometimes deployed in his first spell at Chelsea, where he would get the likes of Joe Cole, Arjen Robben and Damien Duff to take up ‘half’ positions where they didn’t come all the way back and defend when Chelsea were out of possession but instead cheat a bit and wait higher up the pitch in areas from which they could counterattack as soon as Chelsea won the ball back.

“Ten Hag could use Rashford and Martial to hang higher up the pitch and disrupt City’s shape. We always found it difficult to play against. When you were attacking, you were thinking: Where’s Robben? Where’s Cole? Who’s staying back? What’s the communication like to make sure we’re dealing with those players?

“United could do similar using Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial: defend with eight players and have those two waiting in counterattack positions. That would ask City different questions: should John Stones still come into the midfield or would it leave that side of the pitch open for Rashford to run into? Should Kyle Walker go high or would this open up space?”

As per Rooney, the United boss should line up in a 4-4-2 formation. Martial and Rashford should lead the line with a midfield quartet of Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, or either of Fred and Scott McTominay behind the two attackers.

The goal of this is to keep the distances between the eight defenders small and compact.

The United legend added, “Playing my way carries risks but I feel you have to risk it against City and ask questions that force them to do something different. Gamble and they may punish you but if you just sit back you’re going to get punished by them anyway — so why not take the initiative and try something.”

Rooney pointed out that the Red Devils have to keep a close eye on Erling Haaland. Rooney reiterated that the defenders must stay tight to the Norwegian and not afford him space in the penalty area. To stop Haaland, United will need focus, awareness, and concentration.

Rooney gave his verdict on United’s season. He said that as it stands, Ten Hag has masterminded a brilliant campaign and most supporters will be satisfied with the work the Dutchman has done.

The former striker, however, noted that if City win the FA Cup, United’s season will end on a low despite the milestones that have been made this term.
