United academy star hoping to use "perfect" loan spell to fulfill ultimate "dream" - report

Manchester United youngster Alvaro Fernandez has revealed that it is his dream to one day feature for the Red Devils in the Premier League.

Fernandez, who is currently out on loan with Preston North End, spoke to club media and outlined his ambition to represent the United senior team.

The Spaniard, who arrived at Old Trafford from Real Madrid in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic said, “It was always a dream of mine to play in the Premier League and Manchester United is a big team in the Premier League and across the world.”

“It was always a challenge and a dream to play there and that’s why I’m fighting to be there.”

The 20-year-old shed light on his time so far at Deepdale under the stewardship of Ryan Lowe.

As per Fernandez, he is learning a lot in the Championship and his wish is to continue playing as many games as possible.

The player claimed that he enjoys the hectic schedule as it leaves little time for feeling sorry for oneself in the event of a disappointing result.

Fernandez remarked that PNE’s primary objective this season is to make it to the play-offs and he will do everything in his power to realize this goal.

The full-back narrated just how hard he found it to adapt to life in Manchester, where he now feels firmly at home.

“At the beginning, when I came here to England, I was in digs with an English family. It was very good from them, that they helped me start to speak English. You always have to learn something new, but now I can speak it better!”

“The first year I could only go back at Christmas and summer, so it was hard to come to a new place and a new culture, with a new football team as well. It was hard, but the people have always been good to me in England.”

Fernandez has made 34 appearances for PNE this season and has on more than one occasion been singled out for praise by Lowe.

During this time, he has registered four assists – a relatively decent output. Hopefully, his time in the Championship acts as a launchpad for a senior United debut.

Ronaldo's strike partner hoping to use "ugly" loan spell to break through at United - report

Manchester United youngster Charlie McNeill has described the experience of making his debut alongside Cristiano Ronaldo as a dream come true.

McNeill made his senior United debut in a 1-0 Europa League defeat to Real Sociedad in front of a packed Old Trafford.

Speaking to The South Wales Argus, McNeill revealed that he was astounded that Erik ten Hag chose to bring him on with the Red Devils in search of an equalizer.

McNeill who is currently out on loan with League Two Side Newport County said, “I’ve always loved Ronaldo since he first played for United before going to Real Madrid.

“I just loved him and fortunately enough I got to make my debut and was playing up front with him. That was just surreal, a dream come true.”

“I thought I was getting close [to a debut] a couple of times and then the new manager [Erik ten Hag] came in and I’d been training really well.”

“He saw that and put me in the squad but I didn’t think that I would come on because we were getting beaten 1-0. He put me on and I was just buzzing to play in front of 75,000.”

McNeill is yet to add to his one cap for the 20-time English champions but he is hopeful that a successful loan spell with Newport can provide a solid platform for more first-team opportunities.

The 19-year-old expressed just how much he has relished the physical nature of playing in League Two.

As per the United man, he has learned a lot so far in the eleven games he has started and is now equipped with more knowledge of what it takes to play in a senior side.

“I wanted to come out on loan to get experience in men’s football and coming here and having played 11 games already so far it has been a massive learning curve.”

“It has been tough physically but I’ve really enjoyed that, going up against defenders, challenging for headers, the ugly side of the game that I really need to work on.”

McNeill recently scored his first senior goal and he is optimistic that this will open the floodgates for more to come.

United "firmly in the mix" for dominant midfielder enjoying the season of his life - report

One look at Manchester United’s available options in midfield makes it apparent that manager Erik ten Hag must be thinking of strengthening in that position ahead of next summer.

Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek remain sidelined for the long-term while Casemiro is still in the process of serving his four-match suspension on account of his second red card.

The much-maligned pair of Fred and Scott McTominay seem to be the fully-fit options after loan signing Marcel Sabitzer also got injured on international duty.

Midfielder required

The pair of ‘McFred‘ are not the best passers and United need to bring in someone who can cover for Casemiro and Eriksen considering their advancing years,

The likes of Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona, in-demand England sensation Jude Bellingham, West Ham’s Declan Rice and Southampton youngster Romeo Lavia are among those who have been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

One interesting option could be going back in for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot. The Frenchman was close to sealing a move last season only for the deal to break down at the last moment.

The France international has enjoyed his career-best season this term and has been one of the shining lights for the Turin club in what has been a disappointing season so far.

The 27-year-old has nine goals and four assists in 33 games across all competitions and he can also play as the defensive-minded player as well as further forward.

His contract ends at the end of the current season which makes him an attractive proposition for many clubs. But his mother, who is his agent, can be difficult to deal with while Juventus are also keen to keep him.

However, transfer insider Graeme Bailey has told TeamTalk that a host of Premier League clubs, led by United, are after him but are not sure whether he actually wants to move to England.

Rabiot move back on?

“Adrien Rabiot’s situation is fascinating, he is a very interesting option for a lot of clubs. He gets a lot of criticism from fans, mainly on-line, due to his pay packet – which is not his fault. But within the game he is very highly thought of.

“Manchester United went for him in January and they remain firmly in the mix, as do Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham, Newcastle – if he does indeed have the desire to move, he will not be short of interest.

“But that is one of the main issues here, all the interested parties in England are not 100% convinced that he wants to leave Italy or at the very least that he wants to play in the Premier League.

“Staying at Juventus is a realistic option, but he could be one of the best Bosman frees this summer.”

United star's contract extension "will happen" despite widespread calls to replace him - The Athletic

David de Gea will be given a new contract at Manchester United, according to The Athletic.

The goalkeeper’s current £375,000 per week contract is due to expire in June and United have opted not to trigger a one-year extension on the deal.

That means that either a new contract will be drawn up, or the Spaniard will leave the club for free at the end of the season.

Negotiations on a new deal are underway and the outlet reports that “De Gea has turned down … United’s first offer of a new contract, but at this stage negotiations are expected to reach a positive conclusion.”

They further report that “De Gea … recognises that now, aged 32, he must take a reduction to stay.”

“United have — according to sources speaking on condition of anonymity to protect their positions — made a good proposal, but nonetheless, it is unsatisfactory to De Gea at present,” the report continues.

Despite a number of other outlets claiming that United are shopping around for a replacement who is better suited to manager Erik ten Hag’s style of play, The Athletic says the manager “has come to appreciate De Gea’s worth and is happy for him to be his goalkeeper for future years.”

They further add that the goalkeeping position is not seen as a priority in the transfer market, especially given FFP restrictions.

As was reported here recently, the perception of De Gea being a world-class shot stopper is not borne out by the statistics, which show him as just 13th in the Premier League on the most important metrics. The Athletic support this claim with their own stats.

The report suggests that Brentford’s David Raya, who surpasses his compatriot on almost every measured stat this season, is a good option to replace De Gea. However, it is also noted that “Tony Coton, United’s chief goalkeeping scout, has been scouring Europe for six months and is not yet completely sold on a replacement, especially at the prices being mentioned.”

Dean Henderson, currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, is also under consideration but the feeling of the article is that United will stick with De Gea if he is ready to accept the offer on the table, or close to it.

It seems unlikely that any other club will offer significantly more than United, so at this stage, a new deal, as The Athletic suggests, seems likely.

"100% sure": Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's break from football set to come to an end

Since being sacked by Manchester United in November 2021, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has enjoyed a quiet life away from the watchful eye of the public.

It was actually on this day, March 28 in 2019 that Solskjaer was confirmed as permanent United boss.

He spent more than two and a half years at the Old Trafford dugout before being relieved of his duties after a poor run of results which saw the Red Devils win once in seven Premier League games last season.

The final straw was a 4-1 loss to Watford.

The Daily Star reports that since he left Old Trafford, Soslkjaer has been a busy man spending time with his family and coaching his son back in Norway.

He has coached his son at the Kristiansund academy. Solskjaer took charge of the under-14s last year and managed them for a number of youth fixtures.

As per The Daily Star, Solskjaer has turned down multiple managerial jobs from English clubs as well as punditry roles.

It was reported last year that the former United striker was approached by a Premier League team but he resisted the temptation to make a sensational return to football.

Solskjaer’s time has also been spent on reviewing what went wrong during his tenure at the Theatre of Dreams.

The 50-year-old has watched all 168 matches he oversaw as United gaffer.

“He has also kept tabs on his former coaches, travelling to Doncaster with Michael Carrick in February last year to watch Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town in League One action.”

“Solskjaer returned to United in 2022 as well, watching the women’s under-21 side beat Aston Villa 5-0, with his daughter Karna on the scoresheet. Karna herself has since returned to Norway and now plays in the second tier for AaFK Fortuna.”

The Daily Star warns against ruling out a return to action for Solskjaer. He once admitted, “I’m one hundred per cent sure to create a football environment. That’s where I’m good at and, at some point, I’ll probably be back [working in football]”
