United enter race for £150m star who is "dead set" on move - report

Manchester United are ‘hopeful’ of signing Declan Rice from West Ham United in the summer.

That is according to Football Insider, who claim that the England star has privately expressed a desire to stay in London should he move.

But United have not been put off by that and believe they can persuade Rice to make the move north to Old Trafford.

The midfielder’s current contract expires in 2024, although West Ham do have the option to trigger a twelve-month extension on top of that.

But Rice has already rejected several offers to extend his deal, including an eight-year contract worth £83m that would have made him the best-paid player in their club’s history.

Naturally, that has prompted speculation that he will change clubs in the next transfer window.

Rice is said to be ‘dead set’ on a move this summer and he is thought to be one of the most sought-after players in world football.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with Rice for years, but in recent months Arsenal are thought to have become the midfielder’s most likely destination.

Given the player’s preference to remain in London, the Gunners do perhaps stand the best chance of signing Rice in the summer.

Both clubs will need to negotiate a compromise with West Ham over price, however, with the Hammers having valued Rice at around £150m in the past.

That figure will need to come down some in order for Rice to get his move.

In any case, Declan Rice could well end up being one of the biggest transfer sagas of summer 2023.

"Chaos at the club" proves what United fans really have - Sky Sports

Marcel van der Kraan has heaped praise on Erik ten Hag for his success in his short time at Manchester United.

The Dutch journalist also believes that there will be many people in the Netherlands proud of the work that the former Ajax boss has done since moving to Old Trafford.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Van der Kraan waxed lyrical about Ten Hag.

“Everyone in Holland is very proud that it took him so much quicker than it took Louis van Gaal,” he said. “Because Van Gaal was the one who said, ‘I have one bit of advice Erik: if you have to make a choice for your next club after Ajax, don’t go to United. It’s a commercial club. It’s not what’s ready for you, better to go to Germany.’

“Well I think there’s a lot of Man United fans but also a lot of proud Dutch fans or they’re Ajax fans who see that Erik has done so well. This is very much the Ten Hag we know because he’s firm, he’s solid, he’s also very authentic.

“He doesn’t go into football to get famous. He went into football as a manager to be really successful. He believes in the methods he uses like Pep Guardiola, like Johan Cruyff did, like Ronald Koeman – it’s all about attacking football. It’s unbelievable that he’s achieved this.”

Van der Kraan also pointed to the current situation at Ajax as further proof of Ten Hag’s credentials, saying, “I think there’s a lot of Ajax fans who would be praying that he would be back here because everything after he left Ajax has imploded.

“There’s chaos at the club in a sporting way they’re trailing again, they’re not in charge of the Dutch Eredivisie so it also shines a light on what a job he did while he was here. But I think sometimes only when something is gone and you’ve lost it, you realise how precious it was.”

Even before the Red Devils’ victory in the Carabao Cup, United supporters across the board were elated with the progress the team had made under Ten Hag.

After beating Newcastle United in final, there is a sense of optimism around the club that has not existed since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The fact that the team are not only winning, but winning well and with a clear structure has lifted spirits and convinced many that United are finally on their way back.

Ten Hag's "killer" names surprise rival star as toughest opponent he has faced

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has admitted that he finds it hard to control his aggressiveness on the pitch.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Martinez said that at times he wants to “kill” but for the sake of the team, he tempers down his aggression.

The 25-year-old revealed that his style of play was cultivated in his native Argentina where his countrymen pride themselves on the passion they emit when playing football.

As per the United man, football in Argentina is everything and this was instilled in him from a young age.

The Butcher, as he is popularly known within the United fanbase, where he has developed a cult status in such a short period of time, has this season emerged as one of the best defenders in the league.

Martinez arrived in England under a heavy cloud of doubt, with rivals and even the media questioning his suitability for the Premier League due to his height, or lack of it.

Those reservations have been definitively banished. Martinez was quizzed on this and told James Ducker, “To be honest, I put my full focus here. I can’t control that [what people say], you know, it’s just an opinion.”

“I understand when people say that – they show me who they are, you know? It’s not my problem. I’m really happy, the people are happy with me as well. That’s the most important thing.”

“In the beginning, in Argentina, it was the same. But it’s normal because, in football, it’s not normal to play as a centre-back with my height. It’s not easy as well, you know – you have to work very hard. You have to be very clever on the pitch, and you have to be sharp in every situation but if you’re smart you can win the duels.”

Ducker put Martinez to task regarding the toughest opponent he has faced during his time at United so far. The World Cup winner named Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus. When the two players met at Old Trafford earlier in the season, United emerged out of the match victorious in a 3-1 win.

Martinez disclosed that after the Red Devils’ first two defeats of the season against Brighton and Brentford, the team came together and collectively decided to work hard to reverse their fortunes.

On support from fans and constant chants of “Argentina” whenever he’s on the pitch, Martinez remarked, “It’s [been] a surprise to hear that but, in the end, you give everything that you have and the people recognise that,” he said, “It’s very important to have that connection.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s Carabao Cup final, Martinez confirmed his belief that should United prevail and beat the Magpies, a win could provide the springboard to longer-term and sustained success at Old Trafford.

Casemiro names the teammate he says is "the best player" at Man United

“I want to be known here as a player who wins championships.” Manchester United’s Casemiro makes no bones about his intentions at the Premier League club.

In an interview for TeamViewer’s Player Diaries via manutd.com, the 31 year old gave a fascinating insight into his mentality and what makes him such a special player.

“We know it’s hard to win titles … but I want to win titles and important games here. Especially because we’re talking about the most difficult league in the world.”

The Brazilian has transformed the United midfield since his summer arrival from Real Madrid and is widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best, defensive midfielders in the world.

His adaptation to the demands of the fast-paced Premier League has been swift and smooth, but he acknowledges that it has been a challenge compared to Spain.

“I’m not trying to underestimate La Liga, but the games here are much more difficult, there’s a higher number of transitions,” he said.

“In Spain, they usually prefer tiki-taka football as they call it there. Here there are more transitions, more attacking moves.”

Casemiro was glowing with praise for manager Erik ten Tag, who he acknowledged pushes players to improve all the time.

“I can’t let my guard down, I have to keep working hard,” he said, saying that the maximum is expected of him not just on the pitch, but in training as well.

The Brazilian added that it is “rewarding” when a manager of Ten Hag’s “level” says something about him.

“He’s a very demanding manager. He strives for perfection … It’s important for a manager to be like that. To be obsessed with winning,” he said.

Casemiro spoke about a number of players in the interview, but singled out Bruno Fernandes as United’s top man.

“Before coming to Manchester United, I’d turn on the TV and watch their games…and he was the best player,” he beamed.

“He’s one of the guys that helps up front and midfield, he is part of that transition. He’s our best player there.”

The Brazilian has settled into life at Old Trafford so effortlessly and he confirmed what everyone can see, his happiness at the club, his teammates, the fans and the staff.

“I feel at home as if it was the first day,” he said.

“I also want to be known as a good person here at the club. To be known as someone with character, as a good person, that’s also important.”
