Fabrizio Romano update on €40m World Cup star as United chase De Gea replacement

Manchester United are yet to hold talks with Unai Simon or his representatives despite the uncertainty surrounding David de Gea’s future.

The United number one id out of contract at the end of the current season and while the club do have the option to extend his deal by a further twelve months, they are unlikely to do so.

They may yet offer De Gea a fresh deal on reduced terms as they aim to get a handle on the wage structure at Old Trafford.

The keeper currently earns around £375,000 a week, making him the highest earning goalkeeper in world football, as well as the highest earning Spanish player.

Given his deficiencies, that is a fairly absurd situation for United to find themselves in.

De Gea has impressed Erik ten Hag with his willingness to improves, but if a compromise cannot be reached over his salary, United may be forced to let him leave on a free transfer in June.

That has led to the Red Devils searching for potential replacements, with Spanish outlet Relevo claiming that the club have been impressed while watching Unai Simon at the Qatar World Cup.

The 25-year-old demonstrated impressive distribution against Germany in a match in which he also made a couple of key saves and showed a willingness to challenge for crosses into the box.

His positive style of goalkeeping juxtaposes that of De Gea and could be a huge boost to Ten Hag’s attempt to instil a proactive style of football at Old Trafford.

Relevo believe that Simon could cost up to €40m but given the kinds of fees that United’s rivals have spent to modernise their goalkeeping position, that hardly seems like a ransom.

A deal is some way off, however, with Fabrizio Romano providing an update on the Spain starter’s future.

Speaking to Caught Offside via his column, the journalist said, “No, honestly, I’m not aware of any talk between Man United and Unai Simon or his agents.

“I think he’s very good goalkeeper but at the moment the goalkeepers market in general is really quiet.

“It’s always kind of domino for the goalkeepers and I don’t see big things changing in January.”

Replacing De Gea in January was never likely, but Simon could well become a priority target in the summer transfer window.

Bilbao believe that they already have his replacement in the form of Julen Agirrezabala, who starts for their Under 21 side.

Should United find themselves in need of a top quality proactive goalkeeper next season, Unai Simon will certainly be on the shortlist.

Ten Hag will be concerned at key United star’s horrific World Cup performance

France finished their World Cup group campaign with a surprise defeat to Tunisia at the Education City Stadium, in Al Rayyan.

Didier Deschamps rested key players in preparation for the Round of 16, knowing that safe passage and top spot were already in the bag.

He decided to make nine changes and that meant the holders were not at their fluid best and Tunisia took full advantage, having the better of the exchanges for the majority of the game.

A brilliant solo goal from former Sunderland man Wahbi Khazri just before the hour mark was enough to give Tunisia a famous win, with a last-gasp Antoine Griezmann goal being ruled out for offside.

Unfortunately for the Africans, the win wasn’t enough to see them progress to the knockout phase, with Australia beating Denmark to steal second place.

The first half belonged to Tunisia, who came out of the traps strong but couldn’t find the opener and had a goal ruled out for offside in the opening exchanges.

The second half started in the same vein, with France unable to find any kind of rhythm before the Tunisia opener and even the introduction of Kylian Mbappe, Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Adrien Rabiot wasn’t enough to force an equaliser.

Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane captained the side but looked a little leggy on his first start in over a month.

Varane was tested throughout his 60 minutes on the field and was left red-faced as Khazri waltzed past him with ease,  before sliding the ball past Steve Mandanda to give Tunisia the lead.

However, he will be grateful for the minutes as he builds his way back to full fitness after the injury suffered at Stamford Bridge in October threw his participation at the tournament into doubt.

United target Mbappe started the game on the bench but was introduced just after the hour mark to try and salvage something from the game.

Unfortunately for the French, he wasn’t able to add to his goal tally but is still in the hunt for the Golden Boot having notched three goals in his opening two games.

United have been linked with a monster move for the PSG man, as they search for their Cristiano Ronaldo replacement.

France will meet the runner-up of Group C in the knockout phase, which could still be one from Poland, Argentina, Saudi Arabia or Mexico, with the deciding matches taking place later tonight.

91% accuracy, 88 touches, 10 long balls - United star precise but ponderous in Danish defeat

Denmark took on Australia in the Qatar World Cup group stage in a must-win match, with Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen determined to give his team every chance of making the knockout stages.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Mathias Jensen provided a platform for the Danes in midfield, allowing the United playmaker a free role to drift into pockets of space where his passing could threaten the Australians.

The Socceroos were forced to defend for much of the first half, with Eriksen’s surety in possession a key contribution to Denmark’s domination of the ball.

But the discipline of the Australians made inroads into their penalty area difficult for the Danes, with both teams going into the break goalless.

Eriksen maintained the same level of composure in the second half but perhaps could have been more direct in key moments.

For all of their possession, Denmark went behind after the hour mark, with Matthew Leckie getting the better of Joakim Maehle before slotting past Kaspar Schmeichel.

Eriksen was moved deeper after the introduction of Mikel Damsgaard as the Danes sought to keep their World Cup campaign alive.

His passing remained just as dependable but was no more penetrative as Australia switched to a back five to see out the game.

In the end the only two chances he created were both for Joachim Andersen via corners, each of which went over the bar.

Eriksen ended the matching having had 88 touches, 10 accurate long balls, and a 93% passing accuracy. (SofaScore)

But it was not a performance that the United star will be too happy with, having failed to provide the creative spark that Denmark so desperately needed.

And it was not enough to stop Australia booking their place in the knockout stages of the World Cup at Denmark’s expense.

"A no-brainer": Former England star makes stunning United transfer admission

Since taking over the reins at Manchester United. new manager Erik ten Hag has solved a number of problem positions at the club, most notably improving the leaky defence.

Apart from some fine recruitment, the Dutch boss has also helped rejuvenate the careers of previously under-performing stars like Marcus Rashford.

From not being part of the national team since the previous edition of the Euros to scoring thrice in the group stages of the World Cup, Rashford owes a lot to Ten Hag.

DDG’s woes

One player who has not managed to break into the national scheme of things despite improving his on-pitch performances is United goalkeeper David de Gea.

The Spaniard started the season off in terrible fashion but has since regained his form and has made crucial interventions to keep his team in the contest.

However, his familiar failings with the ball at his feet and his reluctance to leave the line have not helped his cause with both Ten Hag and Spain coach Luis Enrique not the biggest fan of the Spanish international.

Adding to the conjecture surrounding his future at United is the fact that his contract lasts till 2023 with the Red Devils still considering whether to activate the one-year extension clause in his contract.

The 20-time English champions have been linked with a vast number of shot-stoppers around Europe and one of the surprising names to have been linked with a move to Old Trafford is Jordan Pickford.

The Everton shot-stopper has been a regular feature in Everton’s starting line-up over the years but according to former England international David James, the 28-year-old needs to move to a top club to reach a higher level.

Just like Aaron Ramsdale’s career graph has sky-rocketed following his move to Arsenal from Sheffield United, Pickford could have a similar effect.

Could Pickford be the answer?

“I think Aaron Ramsdale has proven that the quality of the team around you will influence the quality of your performances.

He’s a potential number-one for his country because he’s playing for a much better side,” James was quoted as saying by GGRecon.

“Jordan Pickford, when he’s playing for England, plays how he would if he played for a big side in the Premier League. It’s a no-brainer for me.

“Why not Manchester United? Jordan Pickford plays for Everton and Manchester United are just down the road. If he went there, his off-field disruption would be minimal compared to whether he moved down to London.”

Not just United, but even Chelsea have been linked with a move for the England No 1 with Graham Potter looking to solve the goalkeeping conundrum at the Blues.

While Pickford has certainly done well for the Three Lions in major competitions, it remains to be seen whether he can become the permanent answer for Ten Hag in a troublesome position.

Huge setback for United as arch-rivals set to bid for Ten Hag's primary target

Liverpool have reignited their interest in Manchester United target Cody Gakpo following impressive performances at the World Cup.

It has been a top tournament for the forward, who will no doubt be hoping that he can move to a bigger club in the upcoming months.

A January move seems possible but his club, PSV Eindhoven are increasingly reluctant to allow such an important player to leave in the middle of the season.

Erik ten Hag showed huge interest in the forward during the summer transfer window but a move didn’t materialise in the end as United ended up prioritising a move for Antony.

Following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, there is a need to strengthen the squad’s attack and it’s possible the manager will be looking to sign the Dutch international soon.

Fabrizio Romano reports, through Caught Offside that Liverpool are showing interest in signing Gakpo as well.

The club had sent scouts to watch the forward in the Eredivisie before the World Cup kicked off.

So far during the tournament, the versatile attacker has scored in each of the games during the group stage.

For his club, he has scored 13 goals in all competitions this season.

The Peoples Person recently reported that Gakpo’s agents are working on a potential transfer away from the Dutch club in 2023.

Romano claims in his daily briefing that Liverpool have not scheduled a meeting with his agents to discuss a potential transfer.

Jurgen Klopp could turn to the January window to bring reinforcements in after a disappointing start to the season.

Ten Hag faces stiff competition to reach the top four and could also turn to the upcoming transfer window to strengthen his options in key areas.

United are reportedly in the market for a forward and a right-back, with it looking likely that Aaron Wan-Bissaka will depart.

Fabrizio Romano says goal machine wanted by United is "expected to leave"

Cody Gakpo has dropped a huge hint that he will be leaving PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window amidst interest from Manchester United, with reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano adding yet more fuel to the fire.

The Dutch forward was asked about the speculation surrounding his future and was quoted by RMC Sport as saying, “As things stand, I will still play for PSV after the winter break.

“But as I said before the start of the World Cup: we’ll see what happens.”

The winger has certainly done nothing to quiet the rumours by essentially telling fans to ‘watch this space.’ With Erik ten Hag a keen admirer, Old Trafford seems to be his most likely destination.

And journalist Romano claims that, “His agents are already working on a potential transfer — as he’s expected to leave PSV in 2023.”

Gakpo was in contact with Man United in the summer over a potential move but in the end the club spent their budget elsewhere, with Antony signing from Ajax in a deal worth around £85m.

With Cristiano Ronaldo recently leaving the club, the Red Devils’ need for attacking reinforcements has come into sharp focus.

Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho are the only attackers who started the season as senior players and stayed available more often than not.

Anthony Martial has gone from one injury to the next while Anthony Elanga and Alejandro Garnacho are both in the early stages of their careers.

But more than anything else, this Manchester United side are lacking in goals this term.

United have scored just twenty goals so far in the Premier League, meaning they have been outscored by all but one team in the top half of the table, as well as two outside it.

A €60m deal for an attacker who seemingly can’t stop scoring makes a lot of sense in that context.

Gakpo has scored 15 times for PSV this season across all competitions and has taken his sensational form onto the World Cup stage to boot, scoring in all of the Netherlands’ group stage games to help secure qualification to the knockouts.

United join battle for 21-yo Argentina star who has dazzled at World Cup - report

Manchester United are well on their way in this new and exciting rebuilding phase under the expert guidance of new manager Erik ten hag.

This past summer, the club spent big money but were very smart in their acquisition and all the players have proved to be huge hits among fans.

But the work is far from done with incomings required both in the forward areas as well as in the centre of the park.

United eyeing a top-class midfielder

While Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have done exceedingly well since coming into the squad, their age means the squad needs younger legs and a need to prepare for the future considering the rumours linking Fred with an exit next summer.

A lot of names have been mentioned as targets and one name which has refused to disappear since the summer is Benfica star Enzo Fernandez.

His stock is at an all-time high especially after his brilliant goal for Argentina in their impressive win over Mexico in the World Cup, which kept them in the hunt for a knockout berth.

The 21-year-old has been a permanent fixture in the Portuguese club’s matches this season and he has notched three goals and five assists for his club in 24 appearances across all competitions.

His versatility is a huge asset as the Argentina international can play in all midfield positions including as a defensive pivot or further up front, just behind the striker.

Enzo Fernandez is a potential option

According to Portuguese media outlets A Bola, Jornal de Notícias and Record (via Sport Witness), United feature heavily in the list of clubs chasing the talented midfielder’s signature.

Fernandez has a release clause of €120m and the first two outlets have explicitly mentioned that despite humongous interest, Benfica will not let him leave for anything below that price.

Record have also mentioned how the Eagles are currently prioritising their ‘sporting project’, so this clause means it is unlikely that he can leave in January.

Benfica had paid €12m to sign Fernandez from River Plate in July and are guaranteed to pocket a huge return for when they do move him on considering his club displays and the World Cup heroics.

United will need to fight with a host of European giants if they are to have any chance of landing this gem of a player.

'Chelsea are...' - Fabrizio Romano shares transfer claim out of SW6, agreement is 'in place'

Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Christopher Nkunku after months of talks between the Stamford Bridge club and RB Leipzig.

That is according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who has issued his famous “here we go” on this prospective transfer, with only contractual elements seemingly needing to be sorted before the deal becomes official.

What’s the word?

It is said that Nkunku has already completed his medical with the Blues, whilst Chelsea have an agreement in place to bring the France international to SW6.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Romano said: “Chelsea are closing in on Christopher Nkunku deal. Medical already done as reported in September, agreement in place with Leipzig for more than €60m (£52m) clause/easier payment terms.

Long term deal agreed starting from June 2023. Time to sign contracts then… here we go.

Bravo, Boehly

Nkunku now appears extremely close to making the ambitious switch to the Premier League, with Chelsea now just a bit of paperwork away from securing the France international.

From a Chelsea perspective, this is a sensational move for a player who has been shooting the lights out for RB Leipzig. Nkunku’s efforts in the Bundesliga have seen him notch an impressive 12 goals from 15 games, with the 25-year-old taking to a striking role really well over the last two seasons.

In all competitions, he has scored the same amount of goals (17) that Chelsea have managed as a team in the Premier League this season – a sure sign of his ability.

This would be a massive signing for Chelsea and a real statement by co-owner, Todd Boehly who has managed to evade a bidding war by getting his business done early.

3 goals in 3 games - United target’s stock continues to soar

The boy with the golden touch is making a solid case for being this World Cup’s golden boot winner. Manchester United target, and Dutch star striker, Cody Gakpo fired Oranje into the lead at the 26-minute mark.

The Netherlands beat hosts Qatar 2-0 to secure the top spot in Group A.

Qatar was mathematically already out of the running to progress to the final 16, but they gave their all against Louis van Gaal‘s team nonetheless.

The boys in orange put in a commanding display, keeping the lion’s share of possession (63%).

Oranje also eclipsed opponents Qatar in completed passes. The Dutch completed 784 passes, whereas the hosts only completed 452.

Another Manchester United target, Frenkie de Jong, also put his name on the scoresheet in the second half. Qatar shot-stopper Meshal Barsham saved Memphis Depay’s effort but could not prevent De Jong’s toe poke from going in. The Dutch playmaker pounced on the loose ball, beating two defenders to get there first and scored his 2nd goal for Oranje.

However, Gakpo’s name will be up in lights tonight.

Gakpo in the headlines again

Gakpo is proving his worth and showing why he is a real contender for the golden boot. His right-footed drive into the bottom right completes a perfect hattrick of goals in the group stage. He has now scored with his head, his so-called weaker left foot, and his right foot.

Gakpo’s form going into Qatar 2022 was red-hot for both club and country and shows no sign of slowing down.

Gakpo by the numbers

Before the Netherlands clashed with Qatar, only three players had ever scored in three consecutive World Cup appearances for Oranje. Now there are four. The 23-year-old PSV forward is in esteemed company, joining Johan Neeskens (1974), Dennis Bergkamp (1994), and Wesley Sneijder (2010).

He has been directly involved in at least one goal in his last six appearances for the Netherlands in all competitions (5 goals, one assist). For club and country, in all competitions this season, Gakpo has been involved in 35 goals in 29 appearances, scoring 17 goals and assisting a further 18.

The young attacker will be a handful for defences in the last 16. If Gakpo maintains this form, he will also prove problematic for commentators, pundits, and writers.

We might run out of plaudits to describe his virtuoso performances in this tournament.

Erik ten Hag is already known to be a keen admirer of the forward, and Gakpo is doing nothing to dampen the Man United boss’ determination to sign him.

"We've been told..." - Simon Phillips shares fresh claim on £150m "priority target" for Chelsea

Whilst Declan Rice is a “priority target” for Chelsea, the west London club stand “no chance” of prising him away from West Ham midway through the season.

What’s the word?

That is according to journalist Simon Phillips, who understands that the England international is at the top of Chelsea’s wish list as the January transfer window draws ever closer.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Phillips said: “We’ve been told for months now that Rice is going to be a priority target for Chelsea come the summer. There’s no chance, I don’t think, of him moving in January.”

January disaster looming

Chelsea are in desperate need of a boost as we head closer to the resumption of the Premier League season, and that could have been achieved with the high-profile coup of West Ham skipper Rice.

The Stamford Bridge outfit have leaked 17 league goals already this season, which is uncharacteristic considering that it is already just over half of the 33 goals that they conceded across 38 games last term,- which ranked them as the third-best defence in the league in 2021/22.

With his average of 8.32 ball recoveries per game across the last year placing him in the 94th percentile among midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues, the £150m-valued Rice would be an integral addition in Graham Potter’s engine room, possessing quality throughout both attacking and defending phases.

As far as Phillips is concerned, though, this will not materalise, at least not during the winter.

It could be a January transfer disaster for Chelsea as they lag behind in the race for a Champions League berth, although they will likely test West Ham’s resolve in the summer in any event.

"Exceptional player" who wowed Old Trafford wanted by United says Tier 1 journalist

When Erik ten Hag took over the reins at Manchester United, he had a major rebuilding job on his hands. Not only in terms of recruitment but rebuilding the confidence of several under-performing stars.

And the Dutchman seems to be on the right track in terms of both. Already, supporters have seen a huge improvement in the performance levels of players like Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot.

The recruitment part remains an ongoing process. He has definitely transformed a leaky defence through the signings of Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia.

Midfield reinforcements needed

But work remains to be done in the midfield and further up front. The Red Devils did sign Casemiro for big money as well as Christian Eriksen but due to the age of both stars, it is important for the club to look at younger options.

One player who has been of interest to the club for some time now is Brighton Hove and Albion star Moises Caicedo. He was first a target back when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge.

But in the end, the club did not follow up that interest and the Ecuador star ultimately ended up signing for the Seagulls from Independiente del Valle.

And since then, the 21-year-old has been a revelation in the Premier League and has been a regular member of the starting XI this season.

According to Sky Germany, Ten Hag is keen on adding the Ecuadorian to his ranks. “MUFC is planning to enter the race! Bosses highly interested,” tweeted Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The journalist also mentioned that Liverpool are also in the race and consider the defensive midfielder as the ideal replacement in case they cannot complete the signing of Jude Bellingham.

Caicedo on Ten Hag’s radar

“Also on the list of Liverpool – next to Bellingham – & spotted by many other top clubs. Team mates say he is an “exceptional player & character”,” the journalist further tweeted.

That is not all. Many of the top European clubs are eyeing his signature but the Brighton are desperate to hold on to him beyond 2023.

Caicedo has also been an ever-present figure in Ecuador’s impressive World Cup run so far. And his tough tackling presence in the centre of the park has helped the South Americans to four points from their opening two games.

“Willing to listen to offers…” - Chelsea could dispense with £58m star after the World Cup

Chelsea could be open to selling USA captain Christian Pulisic after the World Cup and “will listen to offers” in January.

That is according to journalist Paul Brown, who claims that the Blues remain hopeful of a prosperous World Cup campaign for the American, which would help to recoup some of the £58m spent on him in 2019.

What’s the word?

The journalist understands that Chelsea have wanted rid of Pulisic for sometime, with the 24-year-old looking as though he will depart Stamford Bridge in the coming months.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Brown said: “I think it would certainly help if Pulisic has a great tournament. He’s someone that Chelsea have been willing to listen to offers for over the last few windows.

“He doesn’t seem to have a big future at the club. He hasn’t played much in the last few weeks and he didn’t play much under the previous manager either.”

Good on his day

Ultimately, Pulisic has failed to live up to the hype so far in his career, but at the age of 24, he still has ample time to dispel the doubters.

The American is the epitome of a player who is good on his day, with his threat usually felt by the opposition, even in bit-part appearances.

However, having failed to find a consistent bout of end product in SW6, scoring only 26 times in 133 gmames for the club, it looks as though the Stamford Bridge hierarchy have finally lost patience with the United States skipper.

In fairness to Pulisic, he has not started more than 19 games for Chelsea in a Premier League season, with his tally of starts diminishing with each passing campaign since 2019/20.

Pulisic is good on his day, but he doesn’t appear to be fully trusted at Chelsea, and a move elsewhere may suit both parties.

Manchester United handed mouth-watering home tie in FA Cup third round

Manchester United have drawn Everton in the Third Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The match is set to take place on the 7th of January at 3pm, a Tuesday.

United will be happy to have home advantage in their introduction to this season’s competition, with the match taking place at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag has already guided his team to one win over the Toffees this season, having overseen the club’s 2-1 win at Goodison Park in the Premier League in October.

United had to fight to come back from behind on that occasion, with Alex Iwobi opening the scoring in the opening five minutes of the match.

Summer signing Antony provided the equaliser ten minutes later while departee Cristiano Ronaldo scored what proved to be the winner on the stroke of half-time.

The highlight of the game was arguably the performance of Casemiro, who made his first Premier League start after his €70m transfer from Real Madrid.

It marked a fantastic run of form for the Brazilian, who has since established himself as a real leader in the dressing room.

Man United versus Everton is one of five FA Cup ties to feature a clash between two Premier League sides.

Crystal Palace play Southampton at Selhurst Park and West Ham travel to Brentford, while Liverpool take on Wolverhampton Wanders at home.

The blockbuster tie of the round is undoubtedly Chelsea’s trip to the Etihad stadium against current Premier League champions Manchester City.

United themselves will face the Sky Blues in the Premier League a week after hosting Everton in an early afternoon kick-off.

Spanish starlet with £430 million release clause reveals his love for United

Despite the relatively modest few years in terms of silverware in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, Manchester United continue to remain an attractive proposition in terms of a destination for players around the world.

Be it young or old, not many players will ever turn down a move to the Red Devils despite their current club and first-team status.

One such player who has been added to the list of admirers from afar is Barcelona starlet Alejandro Balde.

Spanish starlet shining

His stock is rising at breakneck pace as he has already made his debut for the Spanish national team in the ongoing World Cup.

The Catalan giants are already aware of his strengths and he has made 12 appearances in La Liga, providing three assists. Xavi has even preferred the 19-year-old in the right-back spot over the more experienced new recruit Hector Bellerin.

And the Camp Nou outfit are currently leading the La Liga table, two points ahead of Real Madrid, and they have only conceded five goals in their 14 matches.

Balde’s biggest strength is his versatility and despite being left-footed, he has featured mainly on the right-hand side of defence. Not to forget, he has also made four appearances in the Champions League this term.

And such is his importance to Xavi’s project, Barcelona have slapped a £430 million release clause on him in a bid to ward off interest from other clubs.

Balde’s love for United

Bu the Spanish international has revealed his admiration for another club in addition to his parent club when posed a question by Mundo Deportivo.

Balde was asked to name his favourite club other than Barcelona, and he didn’t need too long to think about his answer which was Manchester United.

His current deal with Barca is set to expire in the summer of 2024 but the Blaugrana are keen to tie him up for a long time.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the la Liga giants will offer Balde a new deal with a £1 billion release clause – the same figure that is in the contracts of fellow starlets Pedri and Gavi.

Chelsea eye transfer swoop for 22-goal forward compared to "Chelsea legend" by journalist

Chelsea are interested in signing Brentford star Ivan Toney, who has been compared to Blues legend Didier Drogba.

That is according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who believes the England star brings a lot to the table, honouring him with a comparison to Ivory Coast and Chelsea icon Drogba.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke said: “He’s similar in style to Drogba, whether he’s as good a player as Didier Drogba, that’s still open for debate.

“Drogba is a Chelsea legend, played at the highest level throughout his career as well, so Ivan Toney’s still got a lot to do to be named amongst those like Didier Drogba. We know what Ivan Toney brings to the table. He’s a good frontman, can lead the line, can score goals and he’s very powerful in the air.”

The Next Drogba?

With his coolness and ability to lead a side from the frontline, you can understand why O’Rourke has drawn natural comparisons to Drogba.

Toney is enduring a stellar season for Brentford, scoring 10 goals in 14 appearances yet still somehow missing out on inclusion for England’s World Cup squad.

The 26-year-old, who has 22 Premier League goals throughout his career so far, could not have done much more in that regard but did send a message to Gareth Southgate with a beautifully taken brace against Champions Manchester City in what made for the ultimate statement.

You get the impression that £50million Toney’s confidence in front of goal cannot be penetrated, and he could just be the one to break Chelsea’s striker curse.

In the Brentford star, Chelsea could sign a player close to the profile of Drogba in a move that the majority of the SW6 fanbase would adore.

Picture: Check how Garnacho is trying to impress Ten Hag during this break

With most Manchester United players currently busy with their national team at the World Cup, Erik ten Hag has given a break to those who have not been selected.

The plan is for them to rejoin training soon at Carrington before flying to Andalusia for a short training camp before going on to play two friendlies against la Liga sides Cadiz and Real Betis.

For young players, it will be a great time for them to impress the manager and possibly try and make a case for themselves in the post World Cup fixtures.

Garnacho desperate to impress

Even apart from youth stars, a number of first-team stars will also have a chance to work with the manager closely and one of them is Player of the Month Alejandro Garnacho.

He was United’s star in the four competitive fixtures this month, notching two goals and the same number of assists and was even challenged by the former Ajax boss to become a regular fixture of the starting line-up.

His impressive form included his first senior goal against Real Sociedad in the Europa League as well as a winning goal in the Premier League against Fulham.

Garnacho also became the youngest United star to register two assists in the same game for his superlative feat against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup.

The Madrid-born youngster’s form prompted quite a few discussions on whether Argentina should have included him in their World Cup plans but in the end his dream did not come true.

Trying to get a headstart

His meticulous preparation ahead of games has come in for a lot of praise and the winger is currently trying to get a head-start on his teammates and has also begun working on his fitness.

The Argentine has been spotted heading to Madrid and training with fitness coach Javier Ledesma at the ESC LALIGA&NBA Football Centre on the outskirts of the Spanish capital.

The pictures were uploaded on social media, and this will surely be an attempt to impress Ten Hag who has spoke about the need for the 18-year-old to keep working hard and keep his feet on the ground.

World class United star powers Brazil into next round

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro displayed another world class performance for his national team.

His superb goal got Brazil the important two points against a resilient Switzerland team.

The game was pretty evenly matched despite Brazil having a few chances here and there.

The Swiss threatened while going forward, but Casemiro and co kept them at bay.

Casemiro showed his quality yet again, turning up on the big occasion.

Barring the goal, the 30 year old was dominant in midfield.

His vision, passing and well-timed interceptions make him one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.

Him and Fred have a great understanding in midfield, and United fans will be hoping to see that partnership thrive under Erik ten Hag.

Brazil are regarded as the favourites to win the FIFA World Cup by many, and it is not surprising considering the squad they have.

Antony did come on in the 73rd minute and looked neat on the ball.

The United trio will surely go deep into the tournament and might be unavailable for the opening game or two.

Ten Hag will be hoping that neither of them picks up a needless injury and can be back fresh for the second half of the season.

Massive opportunity: club to sell €100m United target in January - report

Manchester United have been mentioned as one of the most likely destinations for disgruntled Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix.

Over recent weeks, Felix has been tipped to be on the move, with the player dissatisfied with his situation at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Felix has been relegated to a secondary role under Simeone. This in addition to the style of play employed by the Argentine boss is viewed as problematic by the Portugal star.

The 23-year-old is desperate for a solution with his agent Jorge Mendes looking to move him on.

United have been handed a major boost in the pursuit of Felix, who as per Marca, is now all but certain to leave.

Marca reports that there is indeed a conflict between the player and his manager.

In the disagreement, club chiefs have chosen their side and have thrown their weight behind Simeone, leaving Felix in a more dire situation.

Marca relays, “The João Félix earthquake has shaken the sporting news of Atlético de Madrid. The footballer intends to leave the Rojiblancos and the sooner the better.”

“At Atlético there is a conflict between João Félix and Simeone and the club is committed to the figure of the Argentine coach.”

Marca adds that Felix’s primary intention is to go to a club where he will be guaranteed a prominent role.

The Spanish publication has also questioned the primary reasons behind Felix’s failure at Atletico Madrid – is it solely down to Simeone’s negative tactics or is the player’s attitude also to blame?

Felix has started the World Cup well, scoring in the opener against Ghana, when he got on the end of a Bruno Fernandes assist. United should be alert to his situation.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe learns ridiculously unrealistic Glazers price tag for United

Manchester United’s recent announcement that the club could finally be up for sale has alerted some of the world’s richest people to the opportunity of owning one of the sports’ gems.

Among the many people that have been named as interested parties, British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe seems to stand the greatest chance of acquiring the Red Devils.

Yesterday, a report emerged that indicated Ratcliffe had effectively turned down the chance to bid for Liverpool, in favour of United.

Ratcliffe, a boyhood United fan, was presented with the golden opportunity of acquiring Liverpool which is expected to be significantly cheaper than United.

Britain’s richest man is of the opinion that United are a bigger brand and a more marketable institution globally.

The Daily Star also reports the enormous amount of money that Ratcliffe would have to cough up before being handed the reins at Old Trafford.

The Daily Star stipulates, “Ratcliffe will certainly need to dig very deep into his already huge pockets if he is to take the club of the Glazers’ hands.”

“The controversial Americans [Glazers] had put a price tag of around £8.25billion on the Red Devils, but have been told this is unrealistic.”

“If their demands are sensationally met, United would become the most expensive sports team in history.”

The Ineos billionaire is said to be extremely keen on acquiring United. In his eyes, the chance to buy such a club does not come too often and he does not want the opportunity to slip away.

Most United fans will not be opposed to a future under the 70-year-old business mogul.

In the past, he has outlined his plans for United should he become an owner – stadium redevelopment and squad rebuilding were high on his agenda.

United “not hot” for World Cup sensation who could replace Ronaldo - Sky Germany

Manchester United are unlikely to be in the running to sign AC Milan forward Rafael Leao, according to Florian Plettenberg.

The Sky Sports Germany journalist earlier tweeted the following:

“News #Leao: Been told that its not hot between him and #MUFC! The club is focused on finding a striker. The wings are well and expensively manned.”

Few could argue with that assessment of United’s wide options, at least on the left flank.

Erik ten Hag currently has Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and young Alejandro Garnacho to call on in that position.
Indeed, it seems to be the one area of Manchester United’s attack that does have sufficient cover.

The Red Devils can count Anthony Martial as the only recognised striker in their squad at present, while summer signing Antony is the only left-footed attacker in the first team.

With Ten Hag preferring to use inverted wingers, a right-sided player would likely be prioritised over one on the left. The striker situation is presently by far the direst.

As reported by The Peoples Person earlier in the month, United had been linked with Rafael Leao, but the fee he would have commanded would have made a winter transfer highly unlikely.

With the team needing to prioritise positions elsewhere, it would appear that Leao will not be a summer target either.

The 23-year-old is no doubt a fantastic player and has shone for Milan this term, with 6 goals and 4 assists in 14 Serie A appearances.

But it might be a case of the right player at the wrong time, with the fee he would command far eclipsing United’s need for him.

Should Ten Hag decide he does want someone to bolster his options on the left, a move for Cody Gakpo looks far more likely, given his comparatively low price and the club’s recorded interest.

Fabrizio Romano issues disappointing update on Ten Hag's primary target

Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update on Manchester United’s chances of signing Frenkie de Jong in January.

Since Erik ten Hag’s arrival in the summer, the Dutch midfielder has been the primary target after suffering an uncertain start to the season at Barcelona.

Under their head coach Xavi, the midfielder was often used from the bench amidst a possible transfer to the Premier League.

However a move never materialised, with De Jong since becoming an integral part of the Spanish side.

Rumours have certainly not died down since the closure of the summer transfer window.

According to GiveMeSport, Romano has dropped a new update on Man United’s stance on the playmaker.

The Italian journalist has confirmed that it is impossible for the club to seal the midfielder in January.

He said in the article “For January, I think it is almost impossible, but for the summer it depends on the player because Frenkie de Jong has always said no to any move.

“It’s not just to Manchester United, he decided to stay at Barcelona, he’s happy at Barcelona, if Frenkie changes his mind, then we will see.”

This is despite the fact that multiple clubs including Premier League rivals Chelsea are showing an interest in signing the Dutch international.

Liverpool are reportedly in the mix but a move isn’t a priority while they look to secure Jude Bellingham.

De Jong has maintained that he has no desire to leave Barcelona any time soon after joining the club from Ajax in 2019.

The 25-year-old would be a huge boost to United’s midfield despite the summer revamp in the middle of the park.

Ten Hag saw defensive midfielder Casemiro arrive from Real Madrid with Christian Eriksen coming to the club on a free transfer.

It is expected that the manager will look to alter the midfield again next summer with plenty of names on the list.

Rio Ferdinand gives opinion on likelihood of Beckham buying United

Rio Ferdinand believes that David Beckham could be a potential buyer in light of the news that the Glazer family are prepared to sell Manchester United Football Club.

Speaking on his FIVE YouTube channel, the former defender argued that a consortium-backed Beckham bid is far from beyond the realms of possibility.

“Becks will come with a consortium,” he hinted. “I saw Becks last night at the game, I went to the England game, and we were sat next to each other.”

Whether the likelihood of such a bid by the former England star was discussed is unclear, but Ferdinand certainly seemed to have put some thought into the matter.

“When you mention someone like Becks’ name, he’s obviously a part-owner of Inter Miami, but he doesn’t come on his own. It’s not his money. It’s not him in terms of putting his hand in his pocket.

“He comes with a consortium. He comes with people who do have deep pockets who have the ability to go and execute on a deal like that.

“So that’s the way he’ll be approaching it, and rightly so. I just think it’s going to come down to a number. If you’ve got the number, and you can produce, that’s what it’s going to be about.”

Beckham has been an owner with Inter Miami since its foundation ahead of the 2020 MLS season and the club has generally been on an upward curve under the management of fellow ex-United man Phil Neville.

Whether he would look to similarly instil former United personnel in key positions were he to be part of a takeover of MUFC is unknown, but Rio Ferdinand believes that such a move would only be good for the club.

“When you look at it, the clubs that are successful over big periods of time have players that have worn the shirt, understand the traditions, understand the history, understand the ethos of the football club, and continue that.

“Ajax with Edwin van der Sar, Bayern Munich have Rummenigge in there among others, Real Madrid, Barca – they all do it.

“They’ve all got players who have been in and around the football club at some point in their life and they’re back in there working at the club because they understand it. And it’s a key part.

“And then they have businesspeople around them, to facilitate and run things and control the business element of the football club.

“And then those people learn on the job, but with a football background. And I think that’s an area that the new owners that potentially come in have to really look at.”

While some fans would argue that a ‘jobs for the boys’ approach would be detrimental to the club’s future, Ferdinand does highlight some good examples in his analysis. It is certainly an approach that Sir Alex Ferguson has historically been a fan of.

But for Manchester United to compete with clubs like Manchester City, it is imperative that any prospective owners place a higher value on expertise than familiarity.

The news that the Glazers are willing to sell up and move on has naturally excited fans, but these next few months could shape the next few decades at Old Trafford.

"Gakpo is gone”: expert says United look certain to sign World Cup star

TV presenter Hans Kraay Jr has said that Manchester United is likely to be Cody Gakpo’s next destination in January.

A recent report indicated that both the club hierarchy and Erik ten Hag were in sync with each other and were ready to move in January for the Netherlands international.

An exclusive by Football Insider also detailed that the Red Devils have a principle agreement in place with Gakpo and his representatives ahead of a winter window transfer.

With Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, Ten Hag’s need for a high-quality goalscorer has only become more urgent and the position cannot go unaddressed any longer.

The United boss is said to be a big admirer of the versatile Gakpo and sees him as a good fit for the style of play he wants to implement at Old Trafford.

Any movement for Gakpo is only likely to take place after the World Cup, where the forward is enjoying a superb tournament.

So far, he has scored two goals for the Dutch.

Hans Kraay Jr told ESPN about Gakpo’s situation, “Gakpo is gone. PSV are not going to keep him, and cannot keep him anymore.”

“Gakpo will soon be playing in the Premier League. The chance that it will be Manchester United is now a lot higher again because Cristiano Ronaldo has left.”

“They have even more money available. At Liverpool, assistant Pepijn Lijnders is charmed by him, so he is chasing Jürgen Klopp. Yes, Gakpo is gone.”

Hans Kraay Jr’s confirmation of Lijnder’s admiration for Gakpo aligns with a report that also relayed Liverpool’s interest in the 23-year-old in January.

Hopefully, United can move fast and ward off any prowling eyes for the highly-talented attacker.

United target suffers torrid afternoon in shock World Cup defeat

Belgium suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat to Morocco in their second Group F fixture at the World Cup.

Abdelhamid Sabiri caught Thibaut Courtois out with an excellent whipped free kick from wide, with just under twenty minutes remaining, before Zakaria Aboukhal fired into the roof of the net in stoppage time to seal the win.

It was another struggle for the Red Devils, who continued on from their limp display against Canada, finding it difficult to make chances against well organised opposition.

Belgium were given a warning in stoppage time of the first half, with Morocco having a goal ruled out for offside in almost identical circumstances to the first goal.

The second half opened up a little but Belgium looked the more vulnerable with Morocco growing in confidence before finding their goals, which gave them a deserved win.

Manchester United right back target, Thomas Meunier completed 90 minutes in the win and found himself as involved as anyone for Belgium, with their stars failing to shine. Meunier provided a decent outlet in attacking areas but his final ball deserted him time after time, reflecting another below par team performance.

He also had a chance to get himself on the scoresheet midway through the first half but curled a tame effort into the arms of the Moroccan keeper, from the edge of the box.

Defensively, the 31-year-old was tested by Sofiane Boufal who fancied his chances against the Dortmund man. Meunier struggled to cope with Boufal and looked rather clumsy at times, giving away the free kick that lead to the goal.

Meunier has been regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford and with Aaron Wan-Bissaka likely on his way out of the club, United will be in the market for a back up to Diogo Dalot in the coming windows.

Another United target, Youri Tielemans, paid for his lacklustre display in Belgium’s opener by dropping to the bench but did come on as a substitute, just before the hour.

Tielemans failed to make an impact once more, as Belgium failed to create anything clear cut, before or after Sabiri’s opener.

Belgium will round off their Group F campaign against Croatia, on Thursday, knowing they will need to drastically improve to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

United make “hugely attractive offer” to complete sensational deal for transfer guru - report

Manchester United are inching closer to bringing in ex-Liverpool transfer guru Michael Edwards to Old Trafford.

A while ago, it was claimed that Edwards was on United’s radar but links to him went cold.

According to Football Insider, the Red Devils are closing in on a swoop for the former Liverpool recruitment specialist and his arrival is not expected to be affected by a change of ownership.

Football Insider reports, “Man United are well placed to agree a deal with Michael Edwards regardless of a potential takeover, sources have told Football Insider.

“Football Insider understands that United remain well on course to finalise terms with Edwards and will wait until next summer for him to join.

“Talks are set to advance regardless of the growing uncertainty behind the scenes at the club. It is believed the takeover process, which is expected to be a long and complicated one, will have no bearing on the outcome of negotiations with Edwards.”

It is believed that United’s offer to Edwards is huge and highly attractive.

Football Insider adds that within United, Edwards is highly regarded as the best-placed candidate to oversee the 20-time English champions’ transfer business after so many costly mistakes in the past.

Currently, Edwards is on a sabbatical from football after stepping down from his role at Anfield.

Alongside United, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is a big admirer of the transfer whizz, although United now look set to beat Chelsea to his services.

It was suggested that Edwards might return to Liverpool with his predecessor and former number two Julian Ward stepping down when the season ends.

However, as per Football Insider, this outcome is improbable.

Edwards would be a welcome addition. His extensive and stellar recruitment record would be invaluable in transforming United to become an unstoppable force in the transfer market.

Crushing: United “hardly have a chance” of landing priority target - Sky Sports

Manchester United have been all but ruled out of the race to sign England’s World Cup star Jude Bellingham.

That is according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, who earlier tweeted:

“Bellingham: Been told that #MUFC hardly has a chance anymore.

“Triple fight: Liverpool, City, Real! #LFC & Klopp pushing! But not at any price due to FFP. Price: Up to €150m! JB is LFCs top target for central midfield – next to 2 players from South America.”

The news will come as a huge blow to fans who witnessed Bellingham’s sensational performance against Iran in England’s World Cup opener.

While he noticeably struggled against the USA’s energetic midfield, his talent is undeniable.

As a confident passer and strong ball carrier, Bellingham may well have offered Erik ten Hag many of the qualities he sought to acquire in Frenkie de Jong over the summer.

It seems that United must now turn their attentions to alternative midfield targets.

While Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have both performed well for the Red Devils since signing in the last transfer window, the latter in particular has no cover.

Eriksen showed signs of fatigue as United’s schedule became more congested in the run up to the Qatar World Cup and Ten Hag’s side seem to lack any kind of creativity from deep in his absence.

One alternative could be Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who scored a wondergoal yesterday to help keep Argentina’s World Cup hopes alive against Mexico yesterday.

It is possible that he is also one of the two players that Plettenberg says Liverpool are tracking as alternatives to Bellingham.

The 21-year-old Argentine only moved to Benfica in the summer but has already been linked with the biggest club in Europe and United are thought to be particularly keen admirers.

United poised to pinch talented teenager from under Chelsea’s nose

Princewill Ehibhatiomhan is currently on trial with Manchester United and featured in an Under 17s match against Blackburn Rovers earlier this week.

The match was played on Wednesday and ended in a 2-1 win for the Red Devilsin the U17 Premier Cup.

Goals from Ethan Williams and Manni Norkett saw off the Rovers, but there will have been many eyes on Ehibhatiomhan’s performance.

The attacker, who turned 17 only last month, is a product of Reading’s youth academy.

Having rejected a deal to stay at Reading in the summer, he now appears to be shopping around for a new club.

The England youth international – who is also eligible for Nigeria – has had trials with Southampton and Chelsea in the last couple of months.

He scored six goals in thirteen appearances for the Royals in the Under 18 Premier League last term and could be set for a bright future.

As the latest Premier League side to take an interest, Manchester United will have been keen to see what Ehibhatiomhan could do.

They may get another chance to do so next week when United’s Under 18s take on fierce rivals Leeds United on Saturday.

A good performance in that highly competition fixture could see Ehibhatiomhan land an offer to join the youth ranks at United on a permanent basis.

Given Erik ten Hag’s willingness to promote youth players, the Red Devils are sure to be an attractive proposition for such talent.

Under the Dutchman’s tutelage, there is every chance that Princewill Ehibhatiomhan could one day become a household name.

"Why didn't we": Neville reveals what will drive Ronaldo in search for new club

August 31, 2021, a date that will live long in the memory of Manchester United supporters around the world. On that fateful day, the club announced they had agreed to bring their prodigal son back home.

It was a fairytale couple of days as pictures and videos of Cristiano Ronaldo wearing the colours of the club that had made him the world’s best adorned every social media post and was the topic of discussion among everyone in the world.

And it culminated in a special game against Newcastle United where the Portuguese lit up Old Trafford once again by scoring twice on his second debut.

Not many would have envisaged that such a romantic story would come to such a bitter end next season. The Portugal international struggled to make an impact under new manager Erik ten Hag and thus decided to give a no-holds barred interview.

CR7 fairytale over

During that highly-publicised interview, the 37-year-old lambasted the club for betraying him and the manager for disrespecting him.

The 20-time English league champions were left with no choice but to mutually agree a termination that has left the former United No 7 without a club.

According to Gary Neville, who was also target of Ronaldo’s ire during the interview, told Sky Sports that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner still has it in him to play for a top European club.

“I think Cristiano Ronaldo is going to be looking for a top club on a four-month or five-month contract where he can go in and do a brilliant cameo role at the very elite of European football,” Neville said.

“I think he’s got four or five great months in him somewhere where he’ll go in and score 15 or 20 goals in that period.”

So far, his agent Jorge Mendes’ best efforts at finding an elite club have not worked out with the likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Newcastle United all saying no to the prospect of signing the superstar.

Where next for CR7?

But knowing Ronaldo’s drive for success, he will be desperate to prove all his critics wrong in England and around the world and that the Red Devils were wrong to let him go.

“That’s what I think his priority would be – to stay in the Champions League, to stay at the very top and prove that what happened at Manchester United wasn’t right.

“Everybody in Manchester will say ‘why didn’t we keep him?’ and people in the Premier League will as well.”

Alternatively, clubs in the MLS and Saudi Arabia and Brazil have shown tremendous interest in acquiring the Portugal skipper but the player still wants to prove he can cut it in Europe.

“I think he’ll get to the end of the season and then think about the next two years and what his last football project might look like. Is it in the US or in the Middle East? Is it somewhere else in Europe where he’s not played before?

“I hope he does really well wherever he goes. I didn’t work out in Manchester in the end, but it was the right thing for the club to do in breaking ties and it was the right thing for Cristiano to do.”

Ronaldo and Messi approached to play out twilight years together in fitting finale

The Saudi government are planning an ambitious swoop for two of football’s greatest ever and most iconic stars.

The Mail reports that the Saudi authorities are planning to lure both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to the Saudi Pro-League.

Ronaldo is currently a free agent after both he and United mutually agreed on the termination of his contract.

This is after the 37-year-old did an explosive interview with Piers Morgan in which he made damning allegations against Erik ten Hag and the club.

Ronaldo, as per The Mail, has suitors interested in his services but any determination of his future is only likely to come after Portugal’s involvement in the World Cup comes to an end.

Several of Europe’s elite have come out to reject the former United striker’s advances.

Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich have distanced themselves from signing Ronaldo. Recently, a report reaffirmed Real Madrid’s lack of interest in their all-time goal scorer on a six-month contract.

With regard to Ronaldo’s foe for many years, Messi, Saudi interest in him is fuelled by the uncertainty surrounding his contract situation with PSG.

Messi’s term with PSG expires at the end of next summer. While the French champions are interested in extending his deal, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is said to be considering all his options.

The Mail indicates on the Saudi government’s interest in Messi, “The Argentine is an ambassador for the Saudi Arabian tourist board, therefore links surrounding a move are not surprising.”

Saudi Arabian Sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal was questioned on the Messi situation and his deal with the country. He said, “That’s benefited a lot in terms of tourism for the kingdom.”

He added, “If they can, I’d love to see them both [Messi and Ronaldo] play in the Saudi league.”

88% accuracy, 83 touches, 3 chances created - United star dazzles despite World Cup defeat

Christian Eriksen played a key role for Denmark today, although his side could not manage to take any points from reigning World Cup Champions France.

The playmaker was deployed alongside Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in a double pivot – a similar role to the one he has enjoyed at Manchester United this season.

In that role Eriksen was able to see a lot of the ball, registering 83 touches.

He certainly seemed far more involved than he did against Tunisia, where he was deployed as a ten from the start of the match, despite playing against superior opposition here.

With an impressive 88% passing accuracy, he coped well with the dynamism of Adrien Rabiot and Aurelian Tchouameni in midfield, both of whom were dogged in their midfield pressing.

Eriksen got his boots a little dirtier than usual in the midfield battle, engaging in four duels and making a couple of ball recoveries, as well as two blocks, as he contributed to a determined Denmark defence.

Unfortunately for the Danes, Kylian Mbappe was too good to stop on the day, as the Paris Saint-Germain forward netted twice.

Eriksen’s proficiency from set-pieces did help Denmark to an equaliser to Mbappe’s opener, with a well worked routine leading to an Andreas Christensen goal.

His creativity was prevalent in open play as well, as he played six successful long passes as his team looked to hit France on the break.

With three key passes – thrice the number of any of his teammates – Eriksen was Denmark’s best hope of creating chances.

But ultimately the Danes carried little threat, registering just two shots on target over the course of 97 difficult minutes.

Nevertheless, Eriksen showed his class in the second match of Denmark’s campaign.

They now must win against Australia on Wednesday if they are to have any hope of extending that campaign into the knockout stages.

Teenage sensation hands United major transfer blow with latest comments

Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko has expressed his intention to stay in Germany at Signal Iduna Park despite transfer interest in his services.

Over the last few weeks, Moukoko had emerged as a legitimate target for Manchester United in their search for a top-quality goalscorer to come in and lead the line.

With the youngster’s contract ending at the end of the season and with his impeccable quality already on display for the world to see, Moukoko was seen as a genuine contender to slot into Erik ten Hag’s plans.

Even Dortmund, a report stipulated, were extremely keen on selling the 18-year-old for a cut-price deal in January to avoid the likelihood of losing him for free in the summer.

Moukoko said a few days back that with time, his decision will be made clearer with many interested suitors eyeing a summer move.

The German international has now remarked that he wants to stay at Dortmund provided they clearly lay out the club’s vision for him going forward.

Moukoko said, “I feel so comfortable at BVB, I love the club.”

” I’d really love to stay at Borussia Dortmund.”

“I want to understand what kind of project and perspective the club will offer me, it’s an important point.”

With Moukoko’s declaration that he is leaning more towards penning a new deal with the Bundesliga giants, United must re-calibrate and shift their focus to other targets.

There are certainly options out there – Cody Gakpo, Joao Felix and Goncalo Ramos just to name a few.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how Moukoko’s situation develops and whether indeed the final outcome will be a stay at Dortmund.
