Defender bids farewell to United after living the dream at childhood club

Today it was announced that Diane Caldwell will leave Manchester United after just half a season.

The Irish international’s contract expires at the end of this month and the club announced that she would leave upon it’s conclusion.

The 33 year old made just six appearances for the club but said it was a dream come true to play for the club that she’s supported all her life.

In a statement published on the club’s website United said, “Manchester United Women can confirm that Diane Caldwell will depart the club when her contract concludes at the end of June.

“Diane joined United in the January 2022 transfer window and the Republic of Ireland international went on to make six appearances for the club.

“Manchester United Women would like to express our thanks to Diane and wish her the best of luck for the rest of her career.”

Caldwell’s last appearance for the Reds came in March when they drew 1-1 with West Ham.

Though her club future is uncertain, Caldwell is still making an impact on the international stage as Ireland are close to qualifying for their first ever major tournament as they lie in second in their group, keeping their World Cup hopes alive.

Though she has yet to comment on her departure, she has retweeted well wishes from the club and the fans.

When she joined the Reds in the January transfer window, she tweeted: “Words can’t describe what this means to me. Everything I’ve done in my life was for this moment.

“As a lifelong United fan, it’s a dream to sign for the club and a huge moment for me and my family. I’m so grateful to be here and will wear the badge with so much pride and passion.”

Meanwhile, fans on social media are getting nervous about the transfer window with Marc Skinner yet to make a signing.

£70m target desperate for United switch warned not to go on strike - report

Manchester United, over the years, have stockpiled a lot of talented wingers who like to play on the left flank. But that has meant the right-hand side bears a lopsided look with no out-and-out right wingers in the club’s armory. Those issues have been exacerbated with Mason Greenwood‘s ongoing legal battle, and Jadon Sancho‘s switch to the opposite flank. New manager Erik ten Hag has made it clear that solving the right wing conundrum is of paramount importance, hence the interest in Ajax’s skillful winger Antony.

The Brazilian was a key part of Ten Hag’s Ajax side, winning two Eredivisie titles and a Dutch Cup along the way. Such was his influence that the Dutch manager had once said that there was no replacement for the Brazil international in Ajax’s squad.

And now, Ten Hag wants to reunite with the winger he originally signed from Sao Paulo back in 2020. United have already met the representatives of the player with Antony himself keen to reunite with his former coach.

However, the Dutch champions are not in the mood to sell any of their assets having already earned a substantial amount from the sale of Ryan Gravenberch to Bayern Munich.

They have slapped a massive £69 million price tag on him in a bid to ward off the English giants. Even Premier League outfit Chelsea are eyeing a move for the 22-year-old.

Strike the only solution?

According to ESPN, Antony has informed his parent club that he will not be able to rejoin pre-season training until August as he is still nursing an ankle injury which he suffered while on national duty against Bolivia.

New Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder confirmed the latest development to ESPN. He said, “Antony is recovering from his injury in Amsterdam. He is doing reasonably well, but the coming weeks are important.

“We hope that he will improve quickly before his injury. I assume that he will be fit again at the end of the preparation.”

Ajax fans have not taken too kindly to the news and view this development with a lot of suspicion. It is a common sight for modern players to go on strike till they seal a move away.

Former Ajax star Davinson Sanchez had done the same which effectively helped him get his move to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

Former coach and current Dutch analyst Aad de Mos had his say on the whole situation.

“That doesn’t come from Antony; it comes more from the agents usually,” De Mos was quoted as saying via Sport Witness.

“I don’t think it’s very wise for his reputation. Ajax are free to ask what they want because he still has a long-term contract.

“He has to be careful with it; it could be a disadvantage to himself because Ten Hag and United could say: we are no longer interested in a player who does that.”

De Telegraaf had already reported that Antony is not too pleased with Ajax’s steep valuation of him, something that will stop him from making his dream Premier League switch.

If Antony does join, he will be one of the only options on the right flank. Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Sancho and even young Anthony Elanga, all prefer playing down the left.

United fans hope to see Antony in the red of Manchester next season with Ten Hag desperate for attacking reinforcements once Frenkie de Jong’s transfer from Barcelona. But with Ajax’s asking price and United’s dithering transfer approach so far, the player himself can be forgiven for thinking he has to take matters into his own hands for the move to materialize.

'One of the best': The ideal midfield powerhouse to partner De Jong at United - opinion

Austrian midfielder Florian Grillitsch is a player Manchester United must target this transfer window.

The 26 year old is out of contract this summer and has been strongly linked to a move to Fiorentina as per Fabrizio Romano.

“In my eyes, Flo Grillitsch is one of the best six-men in the Bundesliga, who is already running a bit under the radar. At least you rarely read anything about him.”

These were former Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann’s words when asked about the 26 year old.

Despite his towering physique, the Austrian is comfortable with the ball at his feet. He is highly press resistant and uses his body to shield the ball from the opposition before making a pass.

The 26 year old’s biggest trait is his versatility, something that United manager Erik ten Hag loves.

Ten Hag is a big admirer of players who can operate in multiple positions, depending on the opponent and formation.

A good example is Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentine started off as a defensive midfielder for Ajax, before gradually slotting as a centre back.

Grillitsch can operate as a number six, number eight or even as a centre back.

United are reportedly close to completing a move for Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona. Alongside the Dutchman, Grillitsch would add the required physicality to balance United’s midfield.

He can stay deep and allow De Jong the freedom to move in advanced areas.

It is to be seen whether United do make a late move for the midfielder, who currently is in advanced talks with Fiorentina.

Target wants United over rivals, has “hopes pinned” on joining Ten Hag’s project - report

Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez is hopeful of a move to Manchester United.

According to Marcel van der Kraan (De Telegraaf), the Argentine is high on Erik ten Hag’s list.

Marcel states: “Martinez is very high on Erik ten Hag’s wishlist, so I expect big developments in the 24 or 48 hours.”

“Martinez will also have his hopes pinned on United, who are an absolute top club for him.”

“Ajax will really cash out for Martinez and go to €45-50m, but that is the advantage if two clubs bid, as we saw with Lyon and Manchester United, then it suddenly goes higher.”

United face competition from Arsenal who are said to be ‘more advanced‘ in the deal as per Fabrizio Romano.

With the Gunners pushing for a deal, United are likely to be caught up in a bidding war.

Ten Hag’s relationship with Martinez could sway him towards a move to Old Trafford.

Man United are also close to completing the transfer of Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord.

Telegraaf claims that the deal is done after an agreement on personal terms yesterday.

“The deal is done, and yesterday he spoke about his own terms,” he added.

“They were not so complicated because he already knew what he could earn at Lyon. Manchester United only had to go a little bit over that.

Man United to make audacious attempt to sign £103m dream midfielder - report

Manchester United are reportedly interested in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham.

The 19 year old has been on United’s radar since he was dominating the EFL Championship with Birmingham City.

The club seriously considered his signing, in the summer of 2020.

Bellingham was given a tour of the training facilities and was escorted by Sir Alex Ferguson himself, however, he decided to move to Dortmund instead.

Since joining BVB, the Englishman has lit up the European stage and has established himself as one of the best young midfielders across Europe.

The Red Devils are said to have reignited their interest in the 19 year old.

According to BILD, Dortmund have set a price of £103 million for Bellingham next summer.

The Englishman’s contract runs till 2025, hence the German club is reluctant to sell one of its prime assets.

United and Liverpool are reportedly interested in the player but will have to pay the mammoth fee to secure his services.

Real Madrid too, are keen on getting the 19 year old to partner the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga in the future.

Bellingham would be the ideal midfielder for United.

His physicality and maturity would allow him to instantly adapt to the Premier League.

Alongside a capable defensive midfielder, Bellingham can thrive as a box-to-box midfielder.

As of now, the deal seems unrealistic and United have plenty of positions to bolster before splashing the money on a marquee signing.

Video: in-demand United star scores wondergoal while deciding his future

Manchester United midfielder, Andreas Pereira is still yet to make a decision on his future.

Sport Witness reports a fee has been agreed between United and Fulham but the 26 year-old is stalling on agreeing personal terms.

The fee is believed to be around 10 million Euros, plus 3 million in add-on’s.

Pereira is currently on loan at Flamengo, a loan that comes to an end at the end of the week.

It is believed Flamengo have an agreement in place to buy Pereira at the end of the loan but they have tried to negotiate the deal. The agreed figure was €10.5m but they are reported to have now just put €5m on the table.

Pereira’s preferred choice would be to stay in his native country, having enjoyed a decent run of form in his loan spell, including smashing in the winner in the Copa Libatadores last night.

Pereira also has no issue with returning to Old Trafford and fighting for his place under new management.

The Brazilian has made a habit of impressing in pre-season for United but hasn’t ever nailed down a first team place.

This is Pereira’s fourth loan spell away from the club, having been previously shipped to Granada, Lazio and Valencia respectively. This underlines his inability to fully break through at United.

With this in mind it makes sense United want to agree a permanent transfer for the player.

With a busy summer of in-comings planned, United will be looking to raise as much money as possible.

Pereira will leave the club with a back catalogue of stunning pre-season goals, including a ridiculous volley at Old Trafford last year.

He was also in the first eleven that delivered Ole Solskjaer that magical night in Paris, helping to secure a famous Champions League comeback in 2019.

United will be hoping for Pereira can agree personal terms with either Fulham or Flamengo soon, as the Ten Hag revolution finally getting underway.

United getting serious about this superb PL alternative to De Jong - report

Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans is a midfielder who is admired by new manager Erik ten Hag.

The midfielder, who scored in an FA Cup final just over a year ago, has one year left on his current contract.

Leicester will be looking to move him on for cash with it looking unlikely that he will sign a new agreement.

The club are no longer in European competition after failing to qualify and some players are edging closer to the end of their contracts.

There is plenty of interest in Tielemans, including some from Premier League rivals and it is looking likely that he will move to a club that plays in European competition.

According to The Times, the 25-year-old is on the shortlist of midfielders who could make their way to the club this summer.

However, it is unclear just how high he is on Ten Hag’s list but there has always been some interest from Man United.

Newcastle made an approach to sign Scott McTominay earlier in the transfer window but United didn’t receive an offer for the midfielder.

If the Scottish international departed the club it would make sense to bring in a profile like Tielemans who is entering his prime.

He also can bag a couple of goals and assists along the way which is something the midfield has lacked in recent seasons.

At this moment in time, it looks like the only midfielder United are pursuing in earnest is Frenkie de Jong.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed Ruben Neves is also on the shortlist as reported by The Peoples Person yesterday.

United are yet to formally sign a player this summer but the ball could start rolling as soon as this week with talks also progressing for Tyrell Malacia.

€10m for a €60m star: how the middle men are outsmarting United - opinion

FC Porto look set to complete a remarkable double-swoop for David Carmo of SP Braga and Joao Silva of Corinthians.

With only 20m Euros likely to be spent between the pair, the Dragons have shown a canny attitude to the transfer market once again.

Neither player is over 23-years-of-age, and each has the potential to attract the attention of a European heavyweight further down the line.

Indeed, Liverpool were reportedly keen on signing Carmo as an understudy to Virgil van Dijk last year, although a horrific injury saw that move scuppered with the Merseyside club opting for Ibrahima Konate instead.

Having been out for a full year with that injury, it is reasonable to assume that most top clubs saw him as too much of a risk – after all, Carmo is yet to play 20 league games across a single season.

What Porto are looking to do, however, is exactly in line with what they and their Portuguese contemporaries have always done – turn risk into profit.

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes was signed for just £6.75m when he moved from Sampdoria to Sporting Lisbon in his early twenties.

He had been in Italy for half a decade at the time and had even attracted attention from Inter Milan and Juventus as a teenager, having been nicknamed “the Maradona of Novara.”

However, neither side was willing to take the gamble of offering a route to first-team football, and outside Italy and Portugal, nobody seemed to bat an eye.

The risk-taking facets of his game have always been there, and it seems that the only club willing to take a gamble worthy of a Bruno pass were Sporting.

That gamble profited Sporting with £47.25m, 59 goals and a ton of assists to boot.

It is a remarkable talent among the “Big 3” of Portugal to be able to spot a talent, develop them and then extract maximum value.

There are countless examples, but the most head-spinning in terms of sheer monetary value has to be Joao Felix.

SL Benfica took a risk that even Porto were unwilling to take when they signed Felix from their direct rivals as a 15-year-old.

The Dragons were put off by his small frame, but in Lisbon Felix was catapulted to stardom while still a teenager.

Their reward? 20 goals, 11 assist and a whopping €127m in transfer profit.

Premier League clubs have been a consistent source of revenue for Porto and Benfica in particular, and since the new millennium, no club save those two have recouped over €1bn in transfer income.

Along with Bruno Fernandes, Victor Lindelof, Fabio Vieira, Raul Jimenez, Ederson, Fabio Silva, Eliaquim Malanga, Luis Diaz, Ruben Dias and Darwin Nunez have combined to cost Premier League clubs €486m in transfer fees.

The price of those players when signing for Portuguese clubs? €83.23m.

Perhaps it’s time to cut out the middleman?

United find the press-resistant "Pit Bull" who will make Sancho shine

With Manchester United having agreed a £13m deal for Tyrell Malacia, we take a look at how the defender compares to the club’s current fullback options and what he can be expected to bring to the squad.

An exciting young fullback, Malacia caught the eye of many a scout in Feyenoord’s fantastic UEFA Conference League run, which saw them narrowly beaten by Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.

The Dutchman was even named in the tournament’s team of the year and at just 22 years of age, all of the signs point to a player of huge potential.

His partnership with Luis Sinisterra on Feyenoord’s left flank caused no end of problems for opponents, with the Colombian named young player of the tournament as he scored six goals and provided four assists.

That productivity owed much to Malacia behind him, who was vigilant in holding down his flank when his winger stayed forward, and it is easy to see a similar partnership arising between him and Jadon Sancho.

Indeed, he finished the Conference League joint top for tackles made, and his stats in the Eredivisie show him to be a player who loves to get involved in the defensive side of the game.

According the Squawka, who use Opta stats to compare players in the “Big seven” European Leagues, last season Malacia made 6.8 ball recovering and 2.8 tackles per 90 minutes – bettering even tackle-happy Aaron Wan-Bissaka in those metrics.

It is no wonder his teammates refer to him as the “pit bull.”

But the young man is far from a “stay at home fullback,” and is a heavy contributor to his team’s possession play.

What stands out when watching Malacia is his press-resistance and movement, and his ability to dovetail with Sinisterra in going down the touchline or stepping into central midfield positions will no doubt have impressed Erik ten Hag, who had previously tried to sign him while at Ajax.

With a whopping 88.4 touches per game in the Eredivisie last season, the fullback is not one to hide from the ball, getting involved in build-up at every opportunity.

For comparison, in the 2020/2021 season, Manchester United’s most involved full back Luke Shaw (Shawberto, as some called him at the time) managed 82 touches per 90 minutes.

There is clearly a reason Feyenoord have used Malacia as an outlet when building play too – he’s very good at it.

An 85.35% pass accuracy ranks higher than Andrew Robertson or Joao Cancelo and while that success rate may not immediately translate to the Premier League, what is encouraging is that he has maintained that accuracy while still playing positive football.

Attempting 1.6 take-ons per game at a success rate of 66.67%, the Dutchman is happy to dribble up the field, while his 4.9 long balls per game show that he can get the ball forward in a variety of ways.

In the final third, Malacia has historically not been widely regarded as an excellent crosser, although his recent assist for Wout Weghorst in the Nations League suggests that it is an area he is working on.

He did manage four Eredivisie assists last term and if he can continue to cross as he did in Cardiff, with time those numbers could get even better at Old Trafford.

His attacking game up to this point bears similarities to Patrice Evra – happy to overlap or underlap and generally preferring to aid in working goal-scoring opportunities with driving runs and clever short passes.

Tyrell Malacia will almost certainly need a settling-in period, having just completed his second season as a regular first team player at Feyenoord.

However his availability in those two campaigns will no doubt have been an encouragement to a side that has had difficulty maintaining Shaw’s fitness over the course of a season.

As such, we can expect plenty of opportunities for Malacia to make the left-back spot his own, and his level of determination will no doubt endear him to fans.

New contract for classy midfielder, could force his way into Ten Hag’s plans

With new manager Erik ten Hag known for his penchant of blooding youth and providing them with first-team exposure, Manchester United are handing out long-term contracts to their most talented academy graduates. Talks are already underway for Alejandro Garnacho to extend his stay at Old Trafford and fans will also be delighted to know that local boy Zidane Iqbal has put pen to paper on a deal which will keep him at his boyhood club till 2025 at the very least.

“Manchester United is delighted to announce that Zidane Iqbal has signed a new long-term contract with the club. Iqbal has agreed a new deal that will keep him at United until at least June 2025, with the option to extend for a further year,” a club statement read.

The Mancunian created history last season by making his debut for the Red Devils against Young Boys in a Champions League group stage encounter at Old Trafford, thus becoming the first British South Asian to play for the English giants.

He went on to replace England international Jesse Lingard in his one-minute cameo appearance. Charlie Savage, son of former Wales international Robbie, was also among the debutants in that game. Interim manager Ralf Rangnick was the one to hand the talented youngsters their chance to shine.

Even though his debut appearance did not last long, it was a significant moment for a sizeable minority population that has for too long been shunned to the background.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the German was even ready to play Iqbal against Brentford in December after COVID-19 wreaked havoc with the first-team squad. The fixture was ultimately postponed.

The 19-year-old had joined the United academy at the age of nine. He signed his first professional contract in April last year.

Iqbal the trailblazer

The Whalley Range-born Academy graduate is a proud Mancunian whose mother is Iraqi and whose father is from Pakistan. The youngster chose to represent the country of his mother’s birth Iraq.

He has already represented the Iraq national team, playing in their World Cup qualifiers away in Lebanon and at home earlier this year.

Iqbal made 24 appearances for the United age group sides, netting four times and providing one assist. The talented youngster is a midfielder by trade but can also play on the left wing. He has been deployed both as an attacking midfielder as well as in a more withdrawn role during matches.

In a social media post, the Iraq international said, “Delighted to have extended my stay at this wonderful club. Praise be to God.”

The Iraq international was part of the Ten Hag’s first practice session. As someone who loves to have possession of the ball, the midfielder will be looking to impress the Dutchman early on so that he gets the chance to fly out as part of United’s pre-season tour.

The 20-time league champions are already bereft of options in midfield with big name players like Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Lingard all departing the club at the expiration of their contracts. Frenkie de Jong is rumoured to be joining from Barcelona but the deal is yet to be done.

Iqbal could be the beneficiary of such a large-scale clearout and if he can impress sufficiently, he can be a part of the first-team squad and even get some minutes during United’s Europa League matches. Signing a long-term deal shows the club’s confidence in the player and now Iqbal has to deliver on that promise.

Young forward matching Ten Hag’s incredible work ethic, could be next breakthrough star

New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has set the tone immediately with his pre season preparations, and teen sensation Alejandro Garnacho looks to be fully on board.

According to MUFCswoop on Twitter, the Dutchman ordered the United players to start training early yesterday, arriving by 9am.

And Garnacho was at Carrington alongside his teammates, despite being entitled to more time off after starring for his country in the Toulon under 20’s tournament over the summer.

The Argentine, who The MEN report has clearly “shown his intent” with an early return to the club, was entitled to an extra three weeks off.

However, after a whirlwind few months, the 17-year-old forward star obviously wants to catch the eye of his new club coach, if he hasn’t done so already.

With some impressive performances for both club and country, the United youth graduate is looking to the future.

And with The Red Devils being hotly anticipated to secure some big name signings, the youngster won’t want to be overlooked in the manager’s plans.

Garnacho made his full debut for the Old Trafford side as recently as April, and has gone on to impress at youth level.

Bagging two goals in the FA Youth Cup final and four tournament goals in as many matches for his country, the wonderkid is already on a high trajectory.

After signing for the Reds from La Liga side Atlético Madrid in 2020, the Spanish born player opted to represent Argentina, his mother’s country of birth.

And with a call up to the full squad this year too, all eyes are on the exciting young attacker.

This shows that United and the new coaching staff really do mean business this coming season. How refreshing it is to see a start to the players being on board too.

Unexpected Man United star to be sold as Ten Hag revolution continues - report

Alex Telles‘s time at Manchester United could be coming to an end.

Samuel Luckhurst reports the left back isn’t fancied by the new manager, Erik Ten Hag – leaving his place at the club under threat.

“Although Telles, 29, played frequently following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s dismissal in November he is not regarded as a starting left-back by Ten Hag and his staff,” Luckhurst said in The MEN.

United have agreed a fee with Feyenoord for wing back, Tyrell Malacia.

With personal terms deemed to be a formality, the deal is very close to being sealed.

This would leave United overloaded at left back with Luke Shaw a key part of the first-team squad and the return of Brandon Williams, it would seem Telles’s place is looking extremely vulnerable.

Since his £15 million, deadline day move from Porto in 2020 Telles has clocked up 50 appearances for United, 42 of them as a starter.

If this is to be the end of the Brazilian’s time at the club, he will leave the club as an underwhelming signing.

Inconsistent performances have been the order of the day for the majority of the United squad over the last season or two and Telles has very much fit that bill.

Signed to challenge Luke Shaw, possibly his most significant contribution was getting the best out of the England left back in the 2020/21 season, which saw Shaw excel to have his best run in a United shirt.

There was an outstanding volley to ignite a comeback against Villarreal in the Champions League a Old Trafford, that should be noted.

A goal of the season contender, which did showcase the ability in the left foot of the 29 year old. An all too fleeting moment in his two-season stay

With United on the verge of closing their first two summer deals – Malacia and Frenkie de Jong, could the Erik Ten Hag revolution be finally showing signs of catching fire?

Bombshell: Frenkie de Jong refuses to leave Barcelona, has told both clubs - report

Frenkie de Jong does not want to join Manchester United and is refusing to leave Barcelona, according to a new report.

Spanish outlet Sport has dropped a bombshell this morning, claiming that “De Jong is determined to stay in the Blaugrana team.”

“Right now he has no intention of leaving and he has transmitted this to the two clubs.”

The news will come as quite a blow to United after reports yesterday claimed that a broad agreement had been reached between the Red Devils and Barça over his signature.

There were initial doubts over the Dutchman’s willingness to leave the Camp Nou but more recent reports had claimed that new manager Erik ten Hag had used their previous working relationship at Ajax to convince De Jong to leave.

Sport are adamant about the story, adding:

“The situation has become tense. As much as [United] press him, the footballer wants to succeed at Barcelona.

“In recent weeks, Frenkie has come to doubt even his agent, Ali Dursun, because of his insistence on placing him at United.

“He does not like that everyone is ‘pushing’ him to leave [Barça], which he described as “the club of my dreams since I was little” at the end of May.”

Sport are now panicking that the 25 year old’s stance could throw the club’s whole summer transfer strategy, and wage structure, into jeopardy.

“We will see if De Jong remains firm or, on the contrary, ends up succumbing to pressure,” Sport says.

“Barça need this to be the case, since several of the signings that they have in mind depend on the transfer of the Dutchman.

“In addition, the former Ajax player’s salary skyrockets from his fourth year. [Barcelona], in full salary restructuring, cannot afford this expense if they want to reduce their salary mass.”

The situation certainly does seem more dire for the Blaugrana than the Red Devils. United have backup options, with Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans among them. In addition they were credited with an interest in FC Porto star Vitinha, who looked to be PSG bound. However, that deal has also hit last minute problems.

From Italy: Man United prepared to offer €30m for sensational defender who Ten Hag admires

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly interested in Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries.

According to Italian outlet L’ Interista,  United are prepared to offer €30 million for the Dutchman.

Ten Hag is a keen admirer of Dumfries and could push for the transfer.

The United coach reportedly sees the right back position as a weakness in his squad and wants to bring in the 26 year old to bolster that area.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is not the best with the ball at his feet and is more suited to playing a team adopting a low block.

While he is a great tackler of the ball, his poor positioning has cost United plenty of goals.

Diogo Dalot on the other hand can be hit and miss.

On occasions, he does look splendid dribbling and going forward, but his inconsistency especially towards the latter part of the season could be a cause of concern for Ten Hag.

Dumfries was brought into Inter as a replacement for Achraf Hakimi, and he has done exceptionally well.

The 26 year old is a dynamic right back, who is known for his attacking presence in the team.

Ten Hag’s system facilitates attacking full backs, and it could get the best out of Dumfries.

His performances for the national side have attracted interest from a host of clubs including United.

While the right back position is reportedly not a priority at United, the club could look at Dumfries towards the latter part of the window.

Tier 1 journalist confirms Man United have agreed bargain fee for Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United have reportedly agreed a fee with FC Barcelona for the transfer of Frenkie de Jong.

According to Patrick Berger, United will pay €65 million upfront plus add-ons.

He tweeted: “Frenkie de Jong is the desired transfer for Erik ten Hag as new head coach of Manchester United.”

“Been told there is an agreement on fee between United and Barca.  Man Utd are set to pay €65m as guaranteed sum + add-ons.”

“Now a solution has to be found on personal terms.”

Simon Stone (BBC) also confirms the above figure in his latest tweet.

“Frenkie De Jong deal to Man Utd not done and significant issues still to work through. But if/when it is, the fee will be €65m plus add-ons.”

He also claims that De Jong is Erik ten Hag’s number one transfer target this summer.

The 25 year old is seen as the ideal midfielder in Ten Hag’s system.

United have looked at other options, but none is said to fit the exact profile Ten Hag is after.

The Dutchman sees midfield as the priority this window, but also wants to bolster other areas.

According to Stone, the Red Devils are looking to strengthen their attack, and are keen on signing Ajax winger Antony.

Ajax remain firm on their price, but United are expected to press for the signing.

From Spain: Man United set to battle arch rivals for brilliant €40m winger

Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing Marco Asensio from Real Madrid.

According to Sport, United, along with Chelsea and AC Milan are interested in the Spaniard who is up for sale.

Asensio has not made up his mind yet but has certain conditions that need fulfilling.

He reportedly wants a salary between seven and eight million euros per year and expects regular first-team football.

Madrid are likely to demand around €40 million as a transfer fee.

Erik ten Hag is said to want to bring in a versatile forward after missing out on Darwin Nunez.

Fabrizio Romano claims United are looking at Brazilian winger Antony,  but face tough negotiations from Ajax who are reluctant to sell their star man.

As an alternative, the Red Devils could move for Asensio. The 26 year old is surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu, and a move to England could help revive his career.

A left-footed right winger would add balance to United’s attack, allowing the right back to make overlapping runs on the outside.

Moreover, at the given €40m price, it could be a bargain deal for the club.

United are currently close to completing a deal for Frenkie de Jong from FC Barcelona.

As per SkySports, the two clubs have reached a broad agreement.

De Jong personal terms ‘no problem’: where he’ll rank on list of United’s top earners

Frenkie de Jong will be among Manchester United’s highest earners when his transfer from FC Barcelona is completed.

That is according to Juan Roberto, who tweeted:

“BREAKING: Frenkie De Jong is set to become one of the highest paid players at Man Utd”

The Lisbon-based club transfer correspondent also suggested that it was a matter of “when” rather than “if”, before saying that:

“The Dutchman set to earn around £350,000 a week which will see him earn the same as Jadon Sancho.”

Sancho’s £350,000 a week wage is dependent on all bonuses being hit, and it is expected that de Jong’s contract will follow a similar structure.

Manchester United were determined to get their man and with the Dutchman having been forced to take a pay cut over his current employer’s financial turmoil, these new terms will likely bring him a rise on what he originally agreed to at the start of his contract with the Catalan giants.

With a “broad agreement” having been reached between the two clubs according to Sky Sports News, De Jong’s arrival ahead of the preseason tour will be a huge boost to Erik ten Hag.

The recent departures of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Lee Grant are expected to have freed up around £820,000 a week in guaranteed wages according to figures from SalarySport.

Dean Henderson’s £120,000 a week will also be off United’s books with Nottingham Forest agreeing to pay the goalkeepers salary for the duration of his loan move to the newly promoted side.

Should the likes of Phil Jones or Eric Bailly also agree to departures this window, Erik ten Hag should have plenty of room to manoeuvre in rebuilding the squad – at least in terms of wage structure.

In terms of transfer budget, it appears as though Barcelona and United have reached a breakthrough over negotiations and Ten Hag will hope that a difficult month of negotiations will have paid off in giving him funds to shore up the side.

"Jack likes the player": talks intensify for supremely talented United midfielder

Dundee United’s sporting director has revealed they are in talks with Manchester United for the return of Dylan Levitt for another loan spell.

Levitt spent the last season on loan in Scotland where he picked up the player of the year award for his impressive performances.

The Welsh international netted six goals in 30 appearances for the Tangerines as he fired them into a fourth place finish, clinching their berth in the Europa League Conference qualifiers.

Keen to have Levitt’s talents back, Dundee United’s sporting director Tony Ashgar has said “we really liked Dylan last year, we’re still interested and talks are ongoing. He’s just got another year with Manchester United and he’s got a World Cup to aim for, to try and get into the Wales squad.”

“Dylan is a player who fits into our system. He is well liked by all of the players and loved by the fans. So yes, we are still trying to see if we can do something there. Jack [Ross] likes the player. When you bring a new manager in, you have to run the list of targets past him”

But no agreement has been made yet and according to Football Scotland, there is competition for his signature.

It is reported that Cardiff City, in Levitt’s native Wales, are also interested in the midfielder’s services on loan.

Having spoken about his desire to get a chance under the new new manager, Erik ten Hag, it can be expected that Levitt will take his time with any decision as he tries to impress the Dutch manager in pre-season.

With only one year remaining on his contract as well, it is unclear if a contract extension would be on the cards before any loan move or if the club may look to move him on permanently.

From Manchester United’s perspective, a move to Cardiff may be preferable as a Championship team will provide a higher standard test week to week.

Whereas a return to Dundee United would do little in the way of boosting the 21 year old’s value or gaining any knowledge on his ability to step up to the Premier League.

But with a place at the World Cup on the line, Levitt’s first focus will be on guaranteeing consistent playing time and a familiar setting in Scotland may be his preferred move.

Fabrizio Romano confirms United's rivals have bid for €50m transfer target

Manchester United are facing a tough challenge if they want to land centre back Lisandro Martinez from Ajax.

Not only are the Dutch champions determined to hold onto their player, but United’s Premier League rivals Arsenal have put in a second bid for the Argentinian and are desperate to add him to their defensive roster.

Quoting Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Sport Witness today claimed that “Having originally placed a bid worth around €25m for the defender, something which it’s stated happened a few weeks ago, the London club have returned with €40m.

“According to the report from the Dutch newspaper, Manchester United are also keen, but the assumption is they want to complete the signing of Frenkie de Jong before moving to secure other transfer targets.”

The report was corroborated this afternoon by transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano, who tweeted:

“Arsenal have submitted a new bid for Lisandro Martinez, as reported by @MikeVerweij.

“€40m with add-ons included, but Ajax always asked for €50m fee.

“Man Utd have also been in touch with his agent.

“Again, Ajax have no intention to sell both Lisandro and Jurrien Timber.”

The last sentence of Romano’s tweet brings Timber back into the conversation.

It had been reported that the Dutchman had decided to stay at Ajax but perhaps the issue is not as settled as it seemed.

The Red Devils are also reported to be pursuing another Dutch centre back, Matthijs de Ligt, who has asked Juventus for a transfer.

He would be the most expensive option of the three and would command around €100 million.

Braga’s David Carmo and Villareal’s Pau Torres have both also been linked with an Old Trafford move.

Erik ten Hag "serious" about landing defender, club ready to pursue huge transfer

Manchester United are ready to launch a bid for Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt and Erik ten Hag is said to be serious about a potential deal.

Recently, The Peoples Person reported the club’s initial interest in signing the centre-back, who has reportedly asked for a move away from the club.

De Ligt is another player who played under Ten Hag at Ajax until his move to Juventus in 2019.

At the Italian club, he has provided a crucial role in their defence, appearing in 87 league appearances and scoring eight goals.

According to Corriere dello Sport via Sport Witness, Man United are ‘ready to forcefully enter the scene’ for the defender.

Chelsea are said to be in pole position for the player, who won’t want to drop down to the Europa League.

However, Ten Hag has been convincing his former players of the challenge of his new project and the season ahead.

Frenkie de Jong could be moving to Manchester after talks with the club, the manager and Barcelona.

De Ligt has a release clause of around €120m and could be a world class option to help steady the defence.

United haven’t started the official process to sign the defender but are ready to take on the challenge, with Ten Hag said to be extremely keen to sign the Dutch international.

Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly are both expected to leave with Phil Jones potentially looking elsewhere. If all three were to leave there would be little cover at centre back beyond Maguire, Varane and Lindelof.

De Ligt is one of several centre backs on United’s transfer shortlist, with Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez also very much in the picture.

Fabrizio Romano says forward 'wants United immediately', double deal could be on the cards

Ajax winger Antony is reportedly keen on a move to Manchester United.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Brazilian ‘wants the move immediately.’ His entourage is reportedly pushing for a move to Old Trafford.

After selling Sebastian Haller, Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch, Ajax are reluctant to part ways with Antony.

In an interview with The United Stand, Romano states:

“He [Antony] wants Man Utd immediately, so it is sending a good message to the club and Man United want him.”

After missing out on Darwin Nunez, United could look at Antony as an option for the right wing.

The 22 year old is an exciting winger, who has the experience of playing under Ten Hag. His flair and creativity could add a new dynamic to United’s attack.

United are currently said to be focussing on completing a deal with FC Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong.

Erik ten Hag views the 25 year old as his key transfer this summer and the club is pushing to sign the player.

There have been multiple reports hinting that an agreement could be reached before June 30.

When asked about other midfield targets for Man United, Romano mentioned Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Ruben Neves.

“A name I keep hearing around Manchester United is Ruben Neves. He is a player always around Man Utd, since last summer.

“But the answer I’m always receiving is that it depends on the fee.”

“When Wolves discuss €100m for Neves, it is something that United will not do. They want to find smart solutions. For Frenkie it is different”

“Not a problem”: director gives defender green light to United move - report

Manchester United’s pursuit of a first summer signing has been handed a huge boost by German outfit Hoffenheim.

As the Reds look to add to their squad ahead of a busy pre-season, exciting defender David Raum has been told he can leave, according to Sport Witness.

The emerging star has been on United’s radar since breaking into the Germany national team last year.

And a standout performance against England in The Nations League earlier this month may have persuaded United to make their move.

While new boss Erik ten Hag is assumed to have prioritised strengthening in other positions, full backs have also been under fire after a poor season all round.

The defender’s coach at Hoffenheim, Andre  Breitenreiter, has said they will sit down with the player amid interest from other clubs, including Borussia Dortmund.

“I would prefer to keep him. At the end of the day, it depends on what the market looks like and what chance the player has,” Rosen said.

“If a top club comes and he gets the opportunity, then, of course, we will sit down with him. In the end, it’s always about an exchange based on trust.”

“It’s not a problem for me,” added Breitenreiter.

“We have already had contact. He should rest now for the time being. But it’s no secret that I prefer to have him with me.

“I am the coach and want to have the best players in my team, but there are also always club interests. For me, that’s not a problem.”

Raum, who operates at left back or left wing back, would be available for around €30m (£25m), and with so many players departing Old Trafford this season, a value for money signing would get the summer recruitment off to a flying start.

Pictures: United stars arrive at Carrington for first training with Ten Hag

Manchester United stars have been snapped arriving at the Aon Training Complex at Carrington to start their first day’s training under new manager Erik ten Hag.

Spotted behind the wheel were David De Gea, Luke Shaw, Brandon Williams, Alvaro Fernandez and Phil Jones.

Williams has been subject to a great deal of transfer speculation despite his excellent loan spell with Norwich City last season.

Reports have suggested that a £10 million price tag has been slapped onto the versatile defender.

Jones, too, has been linked with a move away as his chances of breaking through into the first team appear slim.

His injury record and age are both now against the player that Sir Alex Ferguson once predicted could go on to be United’s best ever player.

Tom Heaton, Nathan Bishop,Luke Shaw and Donny van de Beek were also spotted by The MEN.

All eyes will today be on who else is absent. Andreas Pereira has been linked with a €10m switch to Fulham, although he would not be at training today anyway, being still at loan club, Flamengo until the end of the month.

Dean Henderson is set to complete a loan deal with Notts Forest so may also not be seen today.

Anthony Martial is another player who has been widely tipped to leave the club but will be hoping to impress the new manager this summer.

Earlier today, new boss Ten Hag was also photographed arriving at Carrington, along with his assistant manager, Steve McClaren.

Silly season? Did this audacious United transfer request really happen?

United have reportedly turned down a sensational approach from Barcelona to include Harry Maguire in the potential deal for Frenkie de Jong.

The Sun have reported that the Spanish giants are interested in taking the United and England centre-half to the Camp Nou.

It is believed United have, and will, shut down any kind of interest in their 80 million pound man.

With no official communication coming from either club, this may be one of the hardest transfer stories to believe, even for United.

United fans are used to seeing fairy tale transfers mooted in the press, but a Harry Maguire swap for Frenkie de Jong, might just prove to be the most far-fetched of the summer.

United are believed to be making progress in their pursuit of De Jong, without the need to include Maguire in any kind of deal.

It’s thought the clubs are close to agreeing a fee for the midfielder, with personal terms not expected to be an issue.

The arrival of De Jong would surely see him line up with Maguire at Old Trafford next season.

It is believed Ten Hag is happy to keep the United captain at the club, with Maguire looking to resurrect his United career.

Maguire has come in for criticism during his time at United, not least of all last season with his performances dropping way below par.

United are looking to bring in reinforcements at centre half, with Lisandro Martinez seemingly the most likely.

However, there is a hope and expectation from inside the club that Ten Hag will be able to get Maguire back to the form he showed that persuaded United to make him the world’s most expensive defender.

Ten Hag's Man United gamble can help him build his dream defence - opinion

There has been a lot of talk about the need to invest in our defence in order for the players there to suit Erik ten Hag and his style of play.

The assumption is- he wants modern players, capable of playing with the ball, aggressive in their defending, and have a decent amount of pace.

Manchester United’s current centre-back options ahead of the new season are Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, and Axel Tuanzebe. Let’s discuss each player’s profile with our Ten Hag goggles on:

Maguire gets a lot of stick, and quite rightfully so, for some of his poor performances, particularly in the last season.

But form aside, if we consider the type of player he is, he might actually suit both, Ten Hag and the Premier League.

Let’s just get it out of the way now- Maguire isn’t a world-class player but he is a good enough defender.

His ability to head the ball, his height and strength all mean he’s suited to English football.

He is great with the ball at his feet and he isn’t actually slow, he just has a poor turn of pace (in other words, bad acceleration).

Ten Hag, in theory, wouldn’t really have a problem with any of these traits and would be keen on such a player even. Once again, in theory Maguire should return to form. The kind of form that saw him linked with United and Manchester City in the first place.

Varane is another player who suits the Dutch manager. He’s the perfect modern defender and has the bags of acceleration and pace that Maguire lacks a little.

His heading might be short of top class but his biggest problem has been staying fit so far. Again, the hope is that can be resolved under Ten Hag who will be looking into the conditioning at United.

Now Lindelof is a different story. He has all the ball-playing qualities and intelligence to suggest the former Ajax man would love him but he’s arguably less suited to the Premier League than any of the Red Devils’ options.

If he’s happy with it, his role as a reliable back-up would suit him and United but he can’t be a regular starter for a title winning team unless they somehow cover up his weaknesses, which I can’t see happening.

Phil Jones and Eric Bailly are kind of in the same boat. They’re ok on the ball, their physical capabilities are what makes them good and suited for the league. But unfortunately they can’t avoid being out of action.

That kind of unreliability simply means even if they were the dream centre-backs, United can’t afford to hope they’d one day be fit regularly.

I’m also choosing to ignore all the history in regards to undeserved contracts and poor form but that’s a story for another day.

That leaves us with Tuanzebe. At his best, he’s the perfect mix of a modern defender and suits English football’s physicality. Unfortunately he’s not shown it on a regular basis.

The inconsistency doesn’t really seem to be down to him but rather numerous missed moments or a lack of opportunities.

His loan spells have been poorly planned (or his returns from them) and when he’s at the club, he’s been deemed unfit, injured, or simply not picked because of the need to choose other players.

If entrusted, Tuanzebe is probably Ten Hag’s dream centre-back based purely on traits and nothing else.

The question is, can you risk putting your faith in him ahead of Maguire who costed a tonne, Varane who’s clearly world-class, or Lindelof who’s been Mr Reliable for a while and doesn’t deserve the drop?

It’d be a big risk but it might pay off for Ten Hag and he wouldn’t have to part ways with a chunk of his tiny budget.

However, for all the theoretical and dream scenarios, it all boils down to what positions need the most investment and how much money will be left over.

The most urgent area in my opinion is the midfield, and that likely means not having enough money leftover after it’s sorted to bring in a top, proven centre-back alongside Varane.

If that’s the case, you might as well take a gamble on Tuanzebe, if he can prove he deserves that gamble first behind closed doors.

Bizarre or Brilliant? Ten Hag’s intense preseason demands revealed

Manchester United’s players will report to Carrington for preseason training tomorrow, but Erik ten Hag has already rung in the changes.

Reports from The Mirror reveal that the new boss has ordered the grass cut to a precise 15mm in order to facilitate the slick passing game he is determined to implement.

Speaking to Sky Sports back in April, former Go Ahead Eagles midfielder Sjoerd Overgoor warned the groundsmen at Old Trafford to expect such a demand, saying “everything has to be perfect” for the manager, referring to his transformative impact on facility standards.

While the players will begin their preparations with the usual physical assessment, Ten Hag is unlikely to have them doing suicide runs.

Instead, the focus will be on passing drills played out at an intense pace, in order to run the players at the same time as sharpening up their technical quality.

The Dutchman is a staunch advocate of “training the brain,” and his Ajax team demonstrated the value of precise and purposeful decision making all over the pitch.

He is also keen to revive a tradition that was commonplace in Sir Alex Ferguson’s time, insisting that players will eat together after training.

Over the course of the last season, players have used the staff restaurant at their own leisure, with many opting to clock out straight after drills.

Ten Hag sees this as a wasted opportunity to foster team harmony and – crucially – to eliminate the fragmented nature of the dressing room, which has formed cliques visible even on the pitch.

There is a good chance that the new manager will get them to bond over a mutual hatred of one particular training drill.

“After four weeks of 11 against zero we were thinking, ‘What is this? It is so boring,’” said Overgoor.

“But after a couple of months of the season, there were matches where we knew what we had to do and everyone was seeing it the same way. It was really clear and it was working.”

11 against zero is exactly what it sounds like, and while one would hope that this group of players does not require four weeks of shadow play to figure out its identity, the above shows the lengths ten Hag will go to in order to instil his patterns of play.

Fabrizio Romano reveals the bargain price Man United are set to pay for De Jong

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a deal for FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils have increased their offer to €65 million. Their initial bid of €60 million plus add-ons was rejected.

Romano states: “Manchester United are always in direct contact with Barça.”

“The verbal proposal now discussed between clubs is around €65m guaranteed fee, after €60m plus add-ons opening bid rejected.”

“There are still no changes on the player and agents side.”

We earlier covered the multiple reports from Spain claiming a deal could be completed as soon as Thursday.

Ian Whittell (The Telegraph) mentions a fee of €80 million, which could be accepted by Barcelona.

The Catalan club are amidst a financial crisis and require money to aid their transfer business.

The 25 year old midfielder’s sale could allow Xavi to rebuild his team in his mould.

For Man Utd, De Jong would be a brilliant signing.  The Dutchman oozes class, and could instantly elevate United’s midfield.

He has worked with Ten Hag before, so he would fit in well in his system.

United fans will be hoping that after the completion of this deal, the club can move on to other key targets.

Lisandro Martinez and Antony from Ajax remain the other two players strongly linked to Old Trafford, but knowing United, they could easily spring a surprise this summer.

Fabrizio Romano says United target set to make transfer decision in “hours”

Christian Eriksen will make a decision regarding his future in “the next hours or days.”

That is according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who has also confirmed that the Danish playmaker will not be signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

“Christian Eriksen’s decision on future club now finally getting closer.

He’s gonna communicate with his agent in the next hours/days to make a final decision.

Many proposals on the table, while Brentford have still hope – Spurs, now focused on different targets.”

Eriksen is a free agent this summer having made a sensational return to football back in January when he joined on a six-month contract.

With Spurs out of the running, Manchester United are the bookies’ favourite to sign Eriksen, although there is a real chance that the Brentford man will opt to show loyalty to his current employers.

Erik ten Hag has been credited with a keen interest in Eriksen, with Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan insisting that “Erik ten Hag doesn’t want any other players apart from those two first.”

The second player referred to by van der Kraan was of course Frenkie de Jong and it appears that the new manager will be looking to revolutionise Manchester United’s midfield with the silky pair.

As is the case with de Jong, Eriksen already has an existing relationship with ten Hag, having trained at Ajax before agreeing to join Brentford in the mid-season.

The potential for an engine room consisting of so much creativity would be a dramatic change from what the duo dubbed “McFred” have offered in recent years, and should United be successful in getting both signings over the line, all eyes will be on how the new boss fits it all together.

Frenkie de Jong deal: Spanish report explains full terms and timetable

After a protracted period of playing cat-and-mouse, it seems like new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is finally set to land his primary target in Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The Times have reported that the Red Devils are finally closing in on their first signing of the summer.

United have agreed to pay a sizeable fee upfront which the Catalan giants had always wanted. The fee is set to be around €80 million, a huge cash injection for the beleaguered Spanish club.

The Camp Nou outfit were holding out for €85 million, considering the financial issues crippling the club. And United, aware of the Spanish giants’ need to raise funds, had been trying to lowball them with bids of €60 million and €70 million plus add-ons.

Both were outright rejected by the Blaugrana. However, Sport reported that due to club’s having to close its financial accounts by June, the deal is likely to be closed by Thursday, the last day of June.

The English giants want to tie down the Dutch international to a five-year deal, with De Jong set to earn more than what he was getting in Spain.

The move marks the conclusion of a long-running saga which sees United land their main target in time for the Dutchman to get integrated into his new side.

Transfer finally happening

De Jong, who has played under Ten Hag, was reluctant to move to Manchester as he viewed Barcelona as his dream club. He was not ready to quit the new project under Xavi without attaining success.

But due to the five-time European champions’ willingness to move him on and Ten Hag’s charm offensive, the Copa del Rey winner has been forced to consider the 20-time English champions.

Lack of Champions League football was a worry but becoming the fulcrum of the new Ten Hag project at Old Trafford was instrumental in changing his outlook towards the move.

Personal terms are yet to be agreed but that is not expected to be a problem.

Barca had bought the former Ajax playmaker in the summer of 2019-20 for an initial fee worth €75 million. And the Catalan club refused to take a hit on the 25-year-old which meant United’s attempts at lowering the fee went the distance.

But with the deal increasingly likely to happen, fans will be hoping that this finally opens the floodgates and more signings follow De Jong to Old Trafford so that the Ten Hag era can finally begin in earnest.
