Major Ten Hag update: Second interview coming, he's now clear favourite

Manchester United will reportedly carry out a second and final round of interviews to determine their next manager.

According to The Telegraph, Erik ten Hag is leading the race to be the Red Devils’ new coach.

The Ajax coach impressed United in his first interview with his philosophy and vision for the club.

United are said to have spoken to Mauricio Pochettino and one other unknown candidate ahead of their second interview.

The club have been keen admirers of Pochettino and his time at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

The Argentine has over a year left on his current contract at Paris Saint-Germain, with the club prepared to part ways in the summer after a disappointing run in the Champions League.

The French giants will reportedly pay compensation of €20 million to Pochettino and his staff.

PSG would be willing to let him go without asking for a fee should he join another club in the summer.

This would enhance his prospects in what is expected to be a shoot-out between him and Ten Hag for the Man Utd job.

United have shown interest in Thomas Tuchel, but he is expected to remain at Chelsea despite the recent unrest surrounding their owner.

Man Utd will be looking to make a final managerial decision in the coming weeks so as to give them enough time to plan for the summer transfer window.

Seriously concerning: Man United great warns the Glazers

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has called on the Glazers to do four or five things to resolve the issues at the club.

The former defender essentially asked for things fans have long been calling for and there’s no doubt most would agree with what he’s said.

According to the Daily Mail, Neville said: “In terms of the Glazer family, post the Super League they said they were going to communicate with the club, they said they were going to change things.

“They’ve not changed anything at this football club. My view is there’s a problem right at the very top, there is a massive problem.

“I think they’ve had 10 years to prove they can be good football operators at Manchester United, beyond Alex Ferguson and David Gill.

“They’ve proven they can’t do it, they’ve proven they can’t build a successful football club here in Manchester without being propped up by the team Sir Alex Ferguson had and himself being there.

“To me, at this moment in time, the first thing that should happen is they should sell the club.

“Because of the Super League, because of their 10 years of failure without Sir Alex Ferguson, and the team and the squad he had, I think they should go.

“But if they really want to stay, because you can never force the Glazer family to sell, then they’ve got to do four or five things.”

Neville’s suggestions are certainly optimistic and it’s unlikely what he called for will ever really happen under the Glazers.

What fans would at least want is for there to be some form of structure at the club to give the players and manager the best chance of success.

The ever increasing debt probably hurts supporters more than anything else that’s wrong with the club but the Glazers have made it clear they have no plans to ever do anything about it.

Neville asked the controversial owners to stop taking dividends but it would be a surprise if there’s a sudden change in policy now.

The reconstruction of Old Trafford or even rebuilding of it has reportedly been in discussions but again, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the cheapest option is the one the Glazers go for.

It’s true the owners need to do a lot to fix the club but there has been a history of doing the bare minimum and that is unlikely to change until they’re gone.

Man United legend believes this manager can finally stabilise the club

Manchester United legend Nicky Butt has expressed his opinion on who the club should appoint as permanent manager next season.

Butt has urged United to choose Mauricio Pochettino as their new coach.

In an interview with FourFourTwo, he discussed why the Argentine would be the ideal man for the job.

“I’d go all-out to get Mauricio Pochettino as manager,” he said.

“He’s proven in the Premier League, he’s young and enthusiastic, his style of play would suit United and his backroom staff seem switched on.”

“I met him a couple of times at Spurs’ training ground and had lunch. You’d want to play for him.”

Butt feels that United lack stability.

The constant change of manager does not allow sustainable growth of the club. It is one of the main reasons why the squad looks so imbalanced.

Butt has faith in Pochettino’s ability to get United back on top.

He isn’t the only former United player to give Pochettino his backing.

Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand have also come out and shown their preference for the former Tottenham boss.

The 50 year old is a fantastic coach and has a proven track record at Spurs and Southampton of rebuilding a team.

United have an important decision to make over the coming weeks – one that could make or break the club’s future.

Man United favourite responds to links with Old Trafford job

Manchester United great Jaap Stam has admitted he would be tempted to return to the club should he be offered a role.

With rumours circulating and suggesting Erik ten Hag may be the next manager, debates have begun over which staff he might bring in.

According to Manchester Evening News, Stam said: “If they would ask me (to take a coaching/managerial role), I would do it straight away without a doubt.

“You know United is my life as well. I’ve had great seasons over there, won trophies and it’s been very important for me. In any way, if I could help them out, I would be tempted to do it.

“I know they are probably not going to come and call me, but also in a different role, and that counts, I think, for every player who has played for United. I think everyone is very eager to help the club and hopefully, bring them to the absolute top level.

“Like I said, you never know, that would be interesting. It’s all about owners, it’s all about technical directors, it’s all about coaches that step in, who do they want as assistant coaches. That’s how it goes.”

Naturally due to Ten Hag’s nationality, Dutch staff have been connected with United, particularly since one report claimed the club wants a club legend to be a part of the new coaching setup.

As Stam hints, many ex players would love to be a part of the club once more and he’s no different, though the decision doesn’t lie with him solely.

The Red Devils coaching team came in for criticism during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s reign as many felt the team was under coached, resulting in some horrific performances.

It’s since become clear that that was not necessarily the case and rather there were bigger issues that came to light.

Some may feel Stam would be a useful influence at Manchester United should he become a part of Ten Hag’s staff but it remains to be seen if everyone is on board with such a decision.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was also linked with United but it’s since become apparent that he will be handed the reigns at PSV as manager next season.

Man United could lose talented youngster to PL rivals

Manchester United youngster James Garner is a summer transfer target for Premier League club Leeds United.

The midfielder has been impressing for well over a year in the Championship for Nottingham Forest.

Recently his team has been superb, from finding themselves in the relegation zone at the start of the season to fighting for a playoff spot to be promoted in the last few weeks.

Garner has been an integral part of the promotion hunting side since Steve Cooper’s arrival at the end of 2021.

He has scored three and assisted in six goals during his time at the club including finding the net with a couple of outstanding free-kicks as well.

According to The Daily Mail, Leeds are monitoring the current situation of James Garner with a possible summer transfer in mind.

Man United could be looking to replace Nemanja Matic in the upcoming transfer window as the club continues their search for a quality defensive midfielder.

Garner is very capable of playing that role despite often featuring for Forest in a more attacking role.

The midfielder has faced top Premier League sides in the FA Cup this season, knocking out Arsenal and taking the Liverpool match to extra time.

Jurgen Klopp spoke positively about Garner in an interview after the FA Cup match and was very complimentary about him.

The outlet reports that despite a rivalry, United might consider a permanent transfer with the 21-year-old eagerly wanting to play every first-team match he can.

While a deal could be a long way from happening yet, Daniel James recently made the move to Leeds in the previous summer transfer window.

United fans will be hoping Garner will stay and fight for his place in the first team after impressing this season.

United handed fresh concern in bid for CL qualification next season

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani is set for another spell on the sidelines after another injury while on international duty.

The Uruguayan forward was substituted in the first half of the fixture vs. Chile, leading to fresh concern over the availability of the attacker for the rest of the season.
Cavani has failed to get a run of games in for Man United this season after regularly coming back from international duty injured or unfit.

It is no surprise that a 35-year-old isn’t as reliable as he once was but it’s becoming increasingly worrying for the squad who need to qualify for the Champions League as soon as possible.

With only nine matches left to play and United in sixth place, Ralf Rangnick will want all his best players fit until the end of the season.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed in a tweet the injury news from the World Cup qualification tie with a fresh problem for El Matador a reality.

He said in the tweet “Bad news for Manchester United as Edinson Cavani leaves the pitch with an injury during Uruguay game. New problem for el Matador.”

Qualifying for the Champions League seems a little bit more unrealistic now United have no quality depth up front.

The Uruguayan striker has scored 12 goals since his arrival on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020.

Cristiano Ronaldo is United’s only fit out-and-out striker until the return of Cavani, which is currently unknown.

The legendary striker has recently turned 37 and is starting to drop to the bench every so often due to fatigue and lack of goals.

Mason Greenwood is unavailable for selection and Anthony Martial is unregistered after sealing a loan move to Sevilla in January.

United fans will be hoping that this doesn’t damage their performances for the rest of the season, particularly during the end of matches.

It seems unlikely that any of United’s academy stars will make the move to the first team but Anthony Elanga is very capable of playing in the striker position.

This is why United and England fans are really booing Harry Maguire

Booed at Old Trafford, booed at Wembley, how can Manchester United captain Harry Maguire win back the hearts and minds of fans of club and country?

Every player loses form at one point or another in their career, and as England manager Gareth Southgate was keen to point out after England’s 3-0 victory over the Ivory Coast last night, it is surely the fans’ job to get behind their man rather than put nails into his coffin.

There is no condoning the booing, or the sarcastic cheering that echoed around Old Trafford earlier this month when Maguire was substituted in the 1-0 home defeat to Atletico Madrid that saw United exit the Champions League.

However, it can, perhaps, be explained.

In some ways you might argue that the booing is not so much for Maguire but for the managers who keep selecting him, no matter what. It seems unfair.

Marcus Rashford, for example, has also struggled for form over the past 12 months but you could argue he has not been the liability that Maguire has become. Yet he has been dropped by Ralf Rangnick at United and by Gareth Southgate for England.

At United, Maguire has not even been stripped of the captaincy, despite a horrific lack of team unity and cohesion, dressing room rifts and mutinies and often, complete confusion and surrender on the pitch.

In that context, Maguire must be the worst captain in Manchester United’s history. He is simply not the right character to lead the team and it beggars belief that he is still in that position despite the presence of gifted leaders such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes.

This is not on Maguire, it is on the manager(s).

As for the catalogue of mistakes and blunders he has committed individually both this season and last, four managers – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Rangnick at United and Southgate for England – have stood by him, time and again.

Not only did Solskjaer never drop the 29 year old, he played him in every single minute of every single game, as if he was the tower of strength around which the team should be built.

It is as if there is a myth that dropping him will make things worse rather than better. That he needs to play through this bad patch. Well, that doesn’t seem to be working.

Some argue that too much is expected of Maguire due to his £80 million price tag, but others argue that perhaps the price tag is what is saving him. United may believe that as long as he is captain and a first team starter, his value will be protected more than if he is languishing in the reserves with Phil Jones. What would his resale value be then?

Whatever the reason, Maguire seems almost untouchable. His appalling behaviour on holiday in Mykonos, where he was convicted of assault and attempted bribery of a police officer, was swept under the carpet by both United and Southgate.

Maguire assaulted police officers. He was found guilty. Contrast this with, say, Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood sneaking girls into their hotel rooms during a Covid lockdown in Iceland. They were sent home and banned from playing for England for several months. But good old Harry, we all know he’s innocent, even though he was found guilty by a court of law.

Fans are not stupid. Booing a player is never the right thing to do, but you can understand those supporters’ frustrations. As United fans and England fans, we all want Maguire to come good and be in both starting line-ups through merit and not because of whatever twisted reasons his bosses have for picking him regardless.

Brilliant academy star strikes again to make it 9 goals in 7 games

Manchester United’s u18s were in action with a midweek daytime kick off again, as they finally took on Blackburn Rovers after several postponed matches.

Blackburn took the lead early in the 9th minute through Harrison Wood, who collected the ball from a throw-in and turned and cut inside before smashing it across the box and off the far post into the goal.

Moments later United looked to hit back with Joe Hugill holding up the ball at the edge of the box before laying off for Omari Forson cutting in from the right, but he couldn’t gather his feet and stumbled as he shot.

A long ball from Ethan Ennis in the 23rd found Hugill running in behind. The striker rounded the keeper with a bit of luck as the ball ricocheted off the charging keeper and back into his path to tap home into the open net.

Hugill was looking for his second with a quick snap shot just inside the box but unfortunately it was straight at the keeper, who collected it gratefully.

Blackburn thought they had taken the lead again late in the first half when they headed into the back of the net, but the ref’s whistle blew to deny them for a foul at the back post.

The match went in at the break 1-1, having been an even affair across the first 45 minutes.

Blackburn came out strong in the second with Wood flashing an effort across the goal and wide.

Rovers were peppering United’s area and one attack ended with Sonny Aljofree taking a shot to the face as he put his body on the line to block.

A remarkable goal in the 71st minute would finally restore the lead for Blackburn, as Dominik Biniek scored straight from the corner, whipping it in at pace and over Tom Wooster’s stretching hands.

Just minutes later and the home side doubled their lead through the dangerous Wood. A throw in from the right into the box was laid off to the forward, who struck with the outside of his boot into the top left corner.

Hugill almost pulled one back when he headed onto the crossbar from a tight angle, flicking on the cross from Ennis.

But it would be Blackburn who would strike again as they made it four in the 85th minute to seal off the match.

United couldn’t handle the intense pressing and lost possession at the back, allowing Harry Leonard to slot home from close range.

United: Wooster, Lawrence (McAllister 29), Kambwala (Parker 74), Aljofree, Murray, Jurado, Oyedele, Curley (Wheatley 61), Forson, Hugill, Ennis

Ten Hag already wants to sign this £30m winger for Man United - report

Erik ten Hag will try to make Brazilian star Antony one of his first signings if he becomes manager of Manchester United, according to a new report.

The 22 year old has been in fine form for Ten Hag’s current side, Ajax, this season, scoring 12 goals and registering 10 assists over the course of 33 matches.

He has also already played eight times for Brazil, netting two goals.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, is favourite to become United’s next boss and was interviewed for the position last week, according to reports.

The Telegraph’s James Ducker reports that ‘If Ten Hag moves clubs this summer, it is thought he would be interested in signing Antony… who has impressed under him at Ajax and is earning a growing band of admirers.’

Signing a right winger would have seemed like the least of United’s priorities just a few months ago, when Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood were fighting for a starting berth in that position each week.

However, Sancho has enjoyed a renaissance having been swapped to the left by Ralf Rangnick following the poor form of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, now on loan at Sevilla.

He is therefore likely to stay on that flank unless the new manager has other ideas.

Greenwood, meanwhile, has been suspended by the club following criminal investigations.

19-year-old Anthony Elanga has shown great promise in the role under Rangnick and his presence may ultimately mean that other positions, such as centre back, right back, defensive midfielder and striker, will still take priority.

However, it is important that the squad has options in each position and with a transfer value of just under £30 million (source: transfermarkt.com), Antony could be an excellent and exciting addition to the squad.

With Elanga present and Martial likely to return after his loan spell, training sessions could be in danger of getting confusing when the shout goes out to ‘give it to Ant(h)ony on the wing!’

United's plans in jeopardy as former manager warns Ten Hag not to take job

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has warned Erik ten Hag not to take the job if he is offered it.

Van Gaal was at the club for two seasons but was sacked after leading the Red Devils to FA Cup glory in 2016.

His Dutch compatriot Ten Hag is favourite to become the next manager in June and was interviewed last week for the position.

But the 70-year-old says he will be making a mistake if he takes the job, saying that Manchester United is a commercial enterprise rather than a football club.

‘Erik ten Hag is a great manager and that’s always good for Manchester United, but Manchester United is a commercial club, so it’s a difficult choice for a coach,’ he said during a press conference for the Dutch national side.

‘He would be better off going to a football club.

‘I’m not going to advise him, he’ll call me himself. We have conversations with each other. But he should choose a football club and not a commercial club.’

The Telegraph’s James Ducker notes that Van Gaal’s typically outspoken remarks are reminiscent of those he made previously when in post in 2014 and later, in 2019, when he said ‘“Unfortunately, we are talking about a commercial club, not a football club. I spoke to [Sir Alex] Ferguson about this and in his last years, he also had problems with it.”

“I think you have to change the structure in the organisation of Manchester United because now I think the balance between the football department and commercial department is not right and even slopes over to the commercial.”’

Ten Hag certainly does have options. The Mail recently reported that he is wanted by two other top European clubs, with one firm offer already in the bag.

Whilst United fans will not welcome the former boss’s comments, which could scupper their chances of landing their preferred candidate, they will also probably agree with a lot of what Van Gaal has to say.

Whether it will put Ten Hag off the job remains to be seen.

Top Man United managerial target rules himself out of the job

Manchester United target and Spain boss Luis Enrique has seemingly ruled himself out of the Old Trafford gig.

The former Barcelona man has been linked with the job at United after reportedly being put on a five-man shortlist.

However, it appears as though Enrique has no interest in moving to United or any club for that matter, at least for the foreseeable future.

The World Cup that’s set to played later on in the year in Qatar is the first time the tournament is held in winter.

It makes sense that Enrique has no interests in leaving his country high and dry now with not long left.

United were said to have interviewed Ajax’s Erik ten Hag and PSG’s Mauricio Pochettino but are being thorough in their process.

No decisions have been made and they will reportedly continue going through all their candidates.

Enrique’s time at Barcelona was full of success and naturally made him an appealing option for the Manchester United job.

Some even suggested Ralf Rangnick could continue in his interim role until the World Cup was over to allow Enrique to join the club after.

However, it seems a bit of a stretched rumour as the club are unlikely to want to leave their situation up in the air for much longer.

This is particularly because of the amount of upheaval expected this summer, with numerous players set to depart and new signings being targeted.

Club legend says his goal is to become manager of Man United

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed his dream to manage the club one day in the future.

The current Derby County manager is struggling in a relegation battle in the Championship.

However, it has been fairly impressive to watch his team’s determination to stay up after the huge points-deduction given to them earlier on in the season.

The former striker retired last year to become permanent manager of the club after a short spell as player-interim head coach.

The Sun reports that the 36-year-old has a dream to become a future Man United manager.

This comes after turning down Everton’s approach to have an interview for the vacant manager position, which Frank Lampard later took.

In a recent interview, Rooney admitted why he turned down the approach to make the step up into the Premier League.

“The whole reason in me going into management is Manchester United. I got offered the job interview for the Everton job.”

“I want to be Manchester United manager. I know I am not ready now but I have to plan everything I do to make sure one day it will happen.”

United’s greatest ever goalscoring machine becoming manager of the club one day would be a dream for many fans who grew up watching Rooney.

Some fans are already impressed with his contribution to the Derby team this season after picking up important points against tough sides.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils are set to appoint their next permanent manager in the upcoming weeks after Ralf Rangnick’s six-month stay comes to an end in June.

Rooney will be hoping his chance will come to take on the important role the next time a managerial vacancy opens at the club.

United could beat Arsenal to supremely talented £67m young striker - The Athletic

Manchester United are interested in signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez this summer, according to a new report.

The Red Devils are in the market for a new striker following Mason Greenwood’s removal from the squad, Edinson Cavani’s impending departure and the lost form of the unsettled pair, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell reports that United’s top target this summer could be Spurs’ Harry Kane, a story we have covered this morning, here.

However, the same reporter also claims that should that pursuit be unsuccessful, the club could turn its attentions to the South American.

‘One alternative that United might look to explore is Benfica’s Nunez,’ Whitwell writes.

‘Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in the 22-year-old Uruguayan, who is in a rich vein of form.

‘He has scored 26 goals in 33 games for Benfica this season and has a high-energy style that would suit a pressing team.’

Whilst Whitwell’s sources have told him United will pursue Kane regardless of who becomes the next manager, the same may not be true of Darwin.

However, the suggestion is that he would suit Erik ten Hag’s style of play.

‘Ten Hag got a first-hand view of his abilities as Benfica knocked out Ajax in the Champions League last 16,’ the reporter concludes.

‘Nunez scored the winning goal.’

United will face plenty of competition for the striker’s signature. In addition to Arsenal, West Ham and Newcastle are also readying bids that are expected to be close to the £67 million asking price.

One club that will be watching developments with interest is Spanish outfit Almeria, who stand to receive 20% of any amount over the £20 million Benfica paid them for the star.

United suffer setback in pursuit of talented star as club demands huge fee

Manchester United have been linked to Napoli striker Victor Osimhen but could be priced out of a move this summer.

The Peoples Person recently reported United’s initial interest in signing the talented footballer in the next transfer window.

The 23-year-old scored 15 goals in his debut season in Italy and this season he has managed to find the net 15 times in all competitions.

According to The Sun, United want the striker this summer, with Arsenal also rumoured to be interested in the forward after releasing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January.

However, both clubs look set to be priced out of a move for the Nigerian striker as Napoli have slapped an £83m asking price for any potential transfer to be successful.

United are set to lose Edinson Cavani once his contract has expired in June after renewing last season.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial’s future are all uncertain, with the club potentially losing more than one striker this summer.

With little attacking depth remaining, it seems likely that a striker will be on the key list of additions for the summer transfer window.

Osimhen would be a perfect signing for the long term considering his age and his goal-scoring form.

United have signed plenty of strikers over the past couple of seasons but it hasn’t quite worked out the way fans would have liked.

Cavani and Ronaldo have scored important goals for the club lately but are past their peak and are not long-term solutions.

Osimhen has attracted interest from more European clubs, such as Real Madrid, Liverpool, Tottenham and Newcastle United.

With such a high asking price, it seems unlikely that any club will be willing to pay such a high fee for a youngster.

The outlet concludes by noting that Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis is known for driving a hard bargain, as United fans will remember after the club’s failed pursuit of defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

Fans will be ecstatic as United get £100m ready to sign England star - The Athletic

Manchester United are gearing up to land Spurs’ Harry Kane this summer regardless of who becomes the club’s next manager.

After starting the season with an enviable array of attacking talent, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood, the Red Devils may be left with just one or two of those names, at best, when the 2022/23 season starts.

Their pursuit of Norwegian phenomenon Erling Haaland appears to have ended but Manchester City’s attempts to sign him could pave the way for United to go for City’s target last summer, Kane.

According to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, Spurs CEO Daniel Devy will almost certainly need to sell the England man this summer as his contract enters the last two years.

The reporter also claims that United even started making enquiries about the striker last summer.

‘Woodward was said to have informed Levy of United’s interest in Kane during Manchester City’s pursuit last summer …’ Whitwell writes.

‘… but conceded that any move would have to wait until 2022 due to budgetary constraints after the signing of Sancho.’

‘Sources say Jorge Mendes has been approaching centre-forwards in Europe about switching to Spurs.

‘The Portuguese agent is described as searching for possible replacements should Kane move to United when the window opens.’

Whilst a 29-year-old Kane would still attract an eye-watering sum, it would not be quite as high as the £150 million or so that Levy was quoting City last time around.

‘Sources predict the price for Kane, who is 29 in July, would top £100 million,’ Whitwell claims.

‘There are theories in the industry that if Pep Guardiola takes Erling Haaland to the Etihad, as appears increasingly likely, then the club from the red half of Manchester will feel an added impulse to make their own major acquisition.

‘Kane would fit the bill commercially.

‘The club want Kane, regardless of who is [in] charge next season.’

Ronaldo is now thought to have decided to stay at Old Trafford next season and could form a twin strike partnership with Kane should he arrive.

Whitwell is a very reliable source and buying a player of Kane’s profile would be the kind of move that United’s controlling shareholders, the Glazers, are wont to do because of the commercial value.

One issue that may bode against United is that they may not be able to offer Champions League football and if Spurs were to qualify, that could even pursuade him to sign a new deal at Tottenham.

This is therefore a story that almost certainly has a lot of substance to it, despite its sensational nature.

United women mount fantastic comeback on a historic day for the club

Manchester United have beaten Everton 3-1 in a historic match at Old Trafford in the Women’s Super League.

United had to come from behind to clinch victory but it was never in doubt that the Reds would put in a performance worthy of taking the points.

An early chance came for United from a Katie Zelem free kick but it was too close to Sandy McIver.

It was Everton that rained on United’s parade in the opening five minutes though, as (possibly offside) Emslie slotted it past Mary Earps in front of the fans at the Stretford End.

United tried to respond quickly, Russo pressing well won it back on the edge of the box but her shot was tame and easy for MacIver.

Toone had a glorious chance but instead of taking the shot she played it across the face of goal but there was no one running onto it.

Everton barely got out of their half but they were working hard out of possession, making it difficult for United to find options.

When the Toffees did attack their link up play was more clinical than United’s.

But United were dominating possession and pushing for that equaliser. It was die hard United fan Alessia Russo who got one back with a header, following a lovely cross by Batlle.

United started well in the second half, with an attack springing in the first minute.

A chance came too for Toone, who chipped it over the bar.

It felt like only a matter of time before United took the lead.

Sure enough, Martha Thomas was brought down in the box and the ref pointed to the spot. There was pressure on Zelem, but she didn’t waiver as she blasted it past MacIver to put the Reds in the lead.

United were playing much more as a unit in the second and smothered Everton’s attacks.

After the ball pinged around in the box the Barmy Army thought United had made it three but it was ruled offside by the linesman.

Everton made changes and began to grow into the half but it didn’t stifle the chances United had either. Toone was through on goal and danced round the keeper but the assistant referee was quick with her flag.

It was Alessia Russo again who found the net at Old Trafford, rising to nod in a cross from Zelem.

Everton tried to respond and forced a good save from Earps late on but it was the Reds day! They hold on to third spot at the moment.

Team: Earps, Thorisdottir, Blundell, Toone (Boe Risa 89), Thomas (Hanson 72), Zelem, Galton, Ladd, Groenen (Moore 83), Russo (Bruun 89), Batlle

Why United fans will be angry at Luke Shaw's latest comments

Unhappiness in the Manchester United dressing room would seem to have reached epic proportions if the comments of two top stars this week are to be believed.

Players have been involved in international duty and as such have been interviewed away from the club and given a chance to express themselves about the differences between club and country.

First it was the turn of Paul Pogba, who said before France’s friendly against the Ivory Coast:

‘You have to speak the truth. Yes, it’s true that there have been moments, especially in Manchester, when there was a need for this break to regain this energy, this confidence.’

(Source: Téléfoot via Sport Witness)

Last night, after scoring a superb goal for England in their 2-1 win over Switzerland, Luke Shaw also hinted that he was not enjoying life at Old Trafford.

‘The environment here that Gareth [Southgate] creates, you always enjoy it,’ he told Sky Sports (via The Mail).

‘When I come here it’s about enjoyment and playing games with a smile on my face.

‘It’s always important to feel like you’re wanted and especially here I always feel that. I’m not saying I don’t at United, but especially here, the way things are, I feel wanted and I enjoy my football.’

Reports have also claimed that Dean Henderson, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek, Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard have all also expressed dissatisfaction at life at the club.

The amount of player unrest at United would normally be seen as the sign that a manager had lost the dressing room, but it has happened so often now under different coaches that the more the players complain, the more a mirror seems to reflect back on them.

Players have been reported as not being happy with managers Luis Van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and now, interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

The next manager is expected to face a difficult challenge in rebuilding a squad devoid of cohesion, confidence and motivation.

Ajax’s Erik ten Hag is the current favourite to take the helm, although his own reputation for control freakery and attention to detail might also not go down well with the whingeing squad.

Arsenal set to swoop for £72m United star with Euro giants also interested

Arsenal have become the second club to be linked with a move for unsettled Man United star Marcus Rashford as the forward’s exit from Old Trafford takes a step closer to reality.

Rashford is rumoured to be unhappy under interim manager Ralf Rangnick and has lost his place in the starting line-up on several occasions recently to youngster Anthony Elanga.

A recent report about his disenchantment appeared to have been informed by Rashford’s own camp and his body language on the pitch has been clear for all to see.

Meanwhile, the Gunners have had their own issues with unhappy strikers and lost Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona in the January window.

With Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah also out of contract, Mikel Arteta has a dearth of attacking options and The Mirror claims that Rashford is being targeted for a daring summer move.

Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with the 24-year-old as a potential replacement for Kylian Mbappé, although those rumours have died down recently after a poor season that has seen him dropped from the England squad by Gareth Southgate.

There are two questions for United in response to a potential bid from Arsenal or any other club.

The first is, are they ready to sell Rashford at a time when they, themselves, are set to be short of attacking options?

Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood will both almost certainly be absent next season, Anthony Martial’s career is on a downward spiral and even Cristiano Ronaldo has been reported to be considering a move.

On the other hand, Rashford’s contract expires in June 2023 and whilst it can be extended by another year, the Red Devils’ hierarchy will not want to be in another situation in a year’s time where they have to sell a player to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

The second question for United is, if they are willing to sell Rashford, what is his market value?

Transfermarkt.com rates the England man at €85 million (£72m), making him the joint 10th most valuable player in the world.

The trusted outlet has shown no depreciation in his value despite his poor form over the course of the last 12 months, and this may be seen as unrealistic in the current climate by would-be buyers.

source: Transfermarkt.com

For their part, United might feel this is undervalued, given his home-grown status, age, international experience and profile.

For all these reasons, a summer departure for the academy graduate looks complicated but ultimately, a lot will depend on who becomes United’s next manager and whether or not Rashford is central to his plans.

Video: Man United star has sensational international moment

Manchester United star Luke Shaw put in a scintillating shift for his country during England’s clash with Switzerland.

The talented defender hasn’t been at his best this season and hasn’t been able to prove his worth to Ralf Rangnick.

Shaw had a brilliant campaign last year but struggled to kick on this time around.

The left-back has suffered with injuries, Covid-19, and fatigue after the European Championship in the summer.

The hope is Shaw can return to his best somehow before the season ends as United chase a difficult top-four spot.

Rangnick’s time in charge has been a turbulent one too and that hasn’t helped the team settle or pick up points they should have picked up.

Shaw has gone through his own instabilities too and so it’s natural he hasn’t been at his best just yet.

If the next manager in charge hopes to be successful then using the former Southampton man well will help his chances.

Shaw will need to perform next season as well or else he would have had just one good season at United despite being at the club for a long time.

Louis van Gaal was the man who originally signed him but since then many things have happened and changed.

Shaw’s goal for England was just a reminder to fans of what he brings to the table and it’s clear to see he has a lot to offer.

Fantastic news for United fans as top star agrees new five-year deal

Bruno Fernandes will sign a five-year contract with Manchester United, keeping him at the club until 2027.

Reports broke earlier in the week that the Portuguese magnifico was close to agreeing a new deal after a breakthrough was reached in negotiations between the player and the club.

And now transfer guru Fabrizio Romano says the deal has been agreed by all parties, with just the paperwork to complete.

Bruno Fernandes new contract with Manchester United will be valid for the next five years,’ Romano tweeted this morning.

‘Bruno has already accepted – it’s matter of time to complete the paperworks and sign.’

The happy news confirms earlier reports by Romano himself and from another reliable source, The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, who both claimed that an agreement was close.

Whitwell reports that United will double Bruno’s salary from £120,000 to £240,000 per week, bringing him in line with most of the club’s top earners.

The contract will take Fernandes up to the age of 32, which means that effectively he has committed the rest of his peak playing years to Manchester United.

It is a difficult time for United, with many players reported to be considering their futures at the club.

The summer could see the departure of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani and Juan Mata, who are at the end of their contracts, plus Dean Henderson, Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, who are all reported to be unsettled.

Mason Greenwood is also likely to remain unavailable and some reports have also linked Cristiano Ronaldo with a move away.

Against this backdrop, Fernandes’ commitment is admirable, loyal, timely and incredibly welcome.

‘The heart of Manchester’: United women prepare to play at Old Trafford in front of the Barmy Army

Manchester United women will make history tomorrow as they take on Everton at Old Trafford for the first time in front of fans.

For this group of girls it is something they could never have imagined. Goalkeeper Mary Earps once spoke of having to stop playing football because she was a girl, now she features on a banner adorning the front of the Theatre of Dreams, overlooking the statue of Sir Matt Busby.

“Did I dream of being on a picture on the front of Old Trafford?” Earps said to The Athletic. “No because it was just never going to be possible.”

As a child captain Katie Zelem once stood on the centre circle at Old Trafford, holding the straps of the Champions League banner as the men’s team came out onto the pitch. Now she sits upon a throne on that same banner and will lead out the team in front of fans at Old Trafford.

“Back then I never would have imagined that 15 years down the line, I would be playing at Old Trafford,” says Zelem.

Zelem was part of the United youth set-up but was forced to find a new club at senior level as United didn’t have a team at the time.

New signing Diane Caldwell, who came over from Ireland to do the stadium tour of Old Trafford when she was a kid, appreciates that the women are representing more than just United at the weekend. With the match being shown on Sky Sports, they are also representing women’s football as a whole.

“You have a bit of pressure being in the big stadium, on live TV, to showcase the women’s game because we’re being scrutinised.”

“People will say, are they good enough to be in the stadiums? Are they good enough to be on live TV? You just have to relish it because a lot of players have not been given that opportunity.”

The team have played previously at Old Trafford, beating West Ham 2-0 there, but Covid restrictions were in place meaning fans could not attend. As the Athletic reports, it was not picked for TV and MUTV had used their 3 game allocation but on Sunday, the fans will be there and it will be televised. Emotions will be running high.

“Now I look back on it,” says Earps, “it was the perfect preparation for the game that we have on Sunday. It doesn’t feel quite as big. It feels big but it feels more familiar.”

This time around, the Barmy Army will be able to support the team from the stands as they are situated in J stand, the standing section of Old Trafford. Earps referred to the core fan group as “The heart of Manchester”.

The supporters group will meet at the Bishops Blaize before the match.

Allowing the team to put on a show at the Theatre of Dreams is a bid to increase the fan base and get those new faces following the girls at home in Leigh as well.

The founder of the Barmy Army, Natalie Burrell told The Athletic, “If we can get an extra couple of thousand, that will be the impact. That’s what I’m excited for, to get a load of new fans involved.”

Burrell continues, “I’m thinking long term about how we can get people coming on the buses and start following the girls more often at Leigh.”

The United skipper agrees. “It’s really important to make Leigh a fortress. We want to set the right tone so that when you come to Leigh it’s a really difficult game.”

As momentous as the occasion is on Sunday, the importance of staying focused and winning the game isn’t lost on the Reds.

They currently sit in third in the league but City are now level on points. Champions League Football is at stake.

Old Trafford will host the opening England game of the Euros in summer where Zelem is hoping to be a part of that Lionesses squad.

“The Euros is a huge goal for a lot of people in our team and it’s something that we all need to strive to work for.”

“You only get selected for England if you’re performing for your club.”

United will be looking to beat the Toffees on the history-making day at Old Trafford and keep Champions League football firmly in their sights.

Man United warned they won't have an easy run at fan-favourite

Manchester United have been warned they’re not the only club trying to recruit Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.

The talented Dutchman appears to be heading to the exit doors this summer despite seemingly leading his current side to the title.

Ten Hag’s attractive football and domination of Dutch football has made him an attractive prospect to many clubs.

He’s also managed to keep a youthful side, blooded youngsters, and come through stronger after rebuilding torn apart sides.

Ajax can be a selling club at times and so that meant that Ten Hag has lost some of his best players multiple times.

His ability to build teams despite that and on a small budget means he’s naturally wanted by many.

Among those who want him is reportedly United and it was no surprise when it was confirmed he had spoken to them.

It’s also equally unsurprising that the moment it was public that he spoke to the Red Devils, rumours have come out saying many clubs want him and those at Old Trafford aren’t his favourites.

Having said that, it’s natural many would be keen on Ten Hag but it’s difficult to see a project that appeals to him more.

After all, all the top clubs are more or less set with their managers and it will take a shocking turn of events to see a club on Manchester United’s level depart ways with their current manager.

Nonetheless, nothing has been made certain of yet and United will have to move swiftly to hire their new manager, whether or not others want him.

United risk losing top manager target as Euro giants’ approach ‘imminent'

Manchester United are under pressure to make a decision on their next managerial choice as European clubs show interest in key targets.

Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are both seen as front runners to replace Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season.

The Ajax manager is seen as a fan favourite while some members of the dressing room are said to prefer the current Paris Saint-Germain boss.

According to the Daily Mail, United are under immense pressure to get a deal for the next manager over the line as other European clubs register interest.

Ten Hag had an interview on Monday to become the next manager of the Red Devils while Pochettino is believed to have spoken to football director, John Murtough.

The Argentinian is expected to have a formal interview for the managerial spot in the upcoming days.

The outlet reports that United sources claim the process to select a new head coach is progressing but an announcement on the next manager is still weeks away.

The two frontrunners are expected to leave their roles in the summer regardless of what happens in Manchester.

Pochettino has also been linked with a move to Real Madrid and The Mail claims that ‘an approach from the Spanish club may be imminent’.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men have made it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and are top of the league with a nine-point advantage.

However, it is believed that the Bernabeu bosses are unhappy with the current style of play and are considering a change in manager.

The Mail also claims that Ten Hag has spoken to two other European clubs that play regularly in the Champions League and that one of them has made a firm offer.

Other managerial options are being considered, such as Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui alongside Spain boss Luis Enrique however a move seems unlikely at this stage.

Talks with the football director and technical director Darren Fletcher have been completed, with Richard Arnold holding the final talks with the candidates.

Wonderkid reveals which United player he turns to for advice in the dressing room

Manchester United forward Anthony Elanga has revealed he looks up to teammate Victor Lindelof in a post-match interview.

The youngster made his senior debut for Sweden last night as his national side won 1-0 late on in extra time vs. Czech Republic in a World Cup qualifier.

Lindelof captains the side and is said to be a heavy influence on Elanga while playing in Manchester.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a bright start to the year as a footballer, being able to feature for the United first team, ultimately earning a first international call up.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has put a lot of trust in the young attacker right from his appointment after the forward impressed him in training.

Since then, Elanga has made regular appearances from the bench and the starting eleven and even scored in the 1-1 away draw vs. Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Overall, he has made 18 appearances and scored three goals this season after an impressive first start at Wolves at the end of last season, where he scored 13 minutes into the match.

According to Sport Witness, Elanga has revealed his admiration for the centre-back and has revealed that the Swedish captain has given him advice throughout his time at the club.

“I look up to Victor as well; he’s a leader and one that I talk to very, very much,” he told TV4, relayed by Fotboll Skanalen.

“Not only in the national team but in United as well. I hang around him and look up to him.”

“He gives me good tips, and it’s good to have Victor in the national team and the club team because there are two Swedes in United now, so it’s good. It’s very cool.”

It’s good to see that Lindelof is making an important contribution to United’s dressing room and is looking out for his Swedish friend.

Sweden next play Poland next Tuesday with just one more win needed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.

United receive massive boost in race to sign world-class centre back

Manchester United’s hopes of signing Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger have been boosted by the news that Bayern Munich have decided not to pursue the centre back.

Rudiger is expected to become a free agent on June 30th after deciding not to continue his career at Stamford Bridge.

The form of United skipper Harry Maguire has been a cause for concern at Old Trafford this season, prompting speculation that the club is in the market for a world class centre back this summer.

Rudiger certainly fits the bill in that regard but reports had suggested he might favour a move back to his home country with Bayern mooted to be keen.

However, according to German transfer guru Christian Falk, the Bavarians have decided against pursuing the 29-year-old.

‘NOT TRUE is That @FCBayern is still interested in @ToniRuediger,’ he tweeted.

‘The Bosses think he is too old for such an investment. For a Transfer he would have to lower his wage demands.’

Falk also offered encouragement for United fans, claiming that the Chelsea man would explore the idea of an Old Trafford move when a new manager arrives.

‘A decision about a future of @ToniRuediger at @ManUtd is difficult. Rüdiger would like to Talk with the new Coach before,’ Falk said.

The fact that Bayern look to be out of the race does not leave United with a clear run at the player, with the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus and PSG still linked with an interest.

Falk confirmed that the player still remains on Los Blancos radar, saying:

‘@ToniRuediger will make no decision before the Matches against @realmadrid about his Future.

‘He hopes on the one hand that the difficult situation at @ChelseaFC will be cleared up. On the other hand: Real ist also still interested.’

Real’s priorities this summer, however, could be Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, which might leave them little time and resources to sign the German.

Goalkeepers union: Earps chats to de Gea ahead of Old Trafford appearance

The goalkeepers union really is a sacred thing at Manchester United. Ahead of the women’s game at Old Trafford on Sunday, Mary Earps and David de Gea got together at the Theatre of Dreams to solidify the bond.

In a video shared on United’s website and social media channels, to promote United women’s game against Everton on Sunday, the pair begin by talking about their friendship so far.

“David’s been great since I came to the club,” Earps begins. “He’s messaged me a few times. It’s been really great to see how he supports the women’s game.”

The Spanish international adds, “We message to send each other good luck or after a clean sheet.”

He laughs as he says, “She’s making more than me, so she’s winning!”

De Gea goes on to talk about their role within the team, “We do different things to everybody else on the pitch, we train separate to the rest of the team. I think it’s a very special position in the game.”

Earps adds, “We work really hard every single day on such small things, and then when it happens in a game, that can really help the team and that brings me the most joy.”

The pair agreed on the most important assets a goalkeeper should possess, “For keepers we have to be very strong in the mind, of course in the body as well,” De Gea says, “But the mind is the important thing for me; you have to be very strong and very focused all the time.”

Together they watched back some of Earps’ best saves of the season so far as de Gea commented, “I watched this game live.”

Since Earps arrived at the club in 2019 she has praised de Gea for both his skills on the pitch and his support off it and it was nice to see the pair come together on screen.

Next the pair would like to arrange a training session together but have said their plans have previously been hampered by Covid rules.

17 year old's fifth goal in only three matches seals victory for United

Manchester United’s u18s had an unusual Thursday lunchtime kickoff away to Sunderland today in order to catch up on the number of cancelled matches earlier in the season.

As a result of the match being scheduled during the international break, United were without a number of their regular starters and were required to use a makeshift lineup including right back Marc Jurado playing in the heart of midfield.

The match got off to a slow start with both sides trying to find their rhythm in the opening 15 minutes.

United started to create some openings and a long free kick from Jurado into the box was misjudged by Sunderland’s keeper and dropped in the area but United were unable to capitalise on the mistake.

A chance opened up for the former Sunderland player, Joe Hugill, when Manni Norkett raced down the left wing and squared for an open Hugill on the right but his left footed shot was tame and easy for the keeper to hold onto in the end.

A poor goal kick from Sunderland led to Finley McAllister running at their backline and laying off to Omari Forson on the right to curl, but he couldn’t get enough whip on the ball and the keeper was able to palm away to safety.

In the 28th minute, Forson’s corner found Jurado running to the front post and the Spaniard’s flick on flashed across the goal and out.

Moments later Ethan Ennis tried from 25 yards out with a low driven effort to the right but the keeper got down quickly to parry out wide and out of danger.

It was minutes before the half time break when United would take the lead through the in-form Ennis. After Sunderland failed to clear, Ennis collected the ball on the left wing before cutting in and curling delightfully into the top right corner out of the keeper’s reach.

The early stages of the second half saw the two former Sunderland boys, Hugill and Logan Pye, almost connect but Pye’s pass was cut out and almost diverted into an own goal but bounced just inches wide.

Sunderland had their biggest chance of the match in the 52nd when Caden Kelly crept into the box on the left and whizzed a shot just over the crossbar.

Marcus Lawrence from the u16s made an appearance off the bench and young player’s first involvement was to pick out Forson on the edge of the box but the midfielder’s shot was straight down the middle, allowing the keeper to palm over the bar.

A rather uneventful second half came to a close with United sealing the 0-1 victory. The important win brings them into fifth place in the table with still four matches in hand on league leaders Manchester City.

United: Hanbury, Pye (Murray 61), Aljofree, Bennett, Kambwala, Ennis, McAllister (Curley 46), Jurado, Forson, Norkett (Lawrence 61), Hugill

Romano confirms important update, fans will love this

Manchester United have recently had a breakthrough in negotiations with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Portuguese magician has a lot of time remaining on his current deal but it’s understood he’s being rewarded for good form.

When Bruno first joined from Sporting Lisbon, it was believed his wages were set at a normal rate and he wasn’t necessarily one of the higher earners at the club.

However, as everyone knows, the playmaker lit the Premier League on fire and quickly became one of the best in his position.

This meant that despite signing a long contract when he first joined, his wages no longer matched the output he was producing.

Negotiations over a new deal were planned many months ago but nothing really happened and it seemed as though everything was at a standstill.

Romano has now confirmed that a breakthrough did happen and so a new contract being announced may happen soon.

It’s clear the club want to pay him what he deserves and want to build around him but not everyone is happy with the circumstances.

After all, whoever is the next manager may not use Bruno in the same way or may not feel he is the key player past managers have deemed him to be.

It’s entirely possible a new manager comes in and the player doesn’t perform as good and he’s then tied to a long-term deal on high wages but not being used as much.

It’s a low possibility but stranger things have happened so the hope is it has no effect on future plans.

Italian giants to swoop for £140m United duo who won't cost them a penny

Juventus are plotting a double swoop for two French Manchester United stars this summer, according to a new report.

La Stampa via Calciomercato.it claims that both Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial are in the crosshairs of the Serie A side.

‘[Juventus sporting director Federico] Cherubini could … try a new offensive for the Frenchman, who is looking for redemption and will leave Manchester United in the summer (barring sensational surprises),’ the outlet says.

‘In this case, Juve would try to negotiate a loan with the right of redemption.

‘And at Old Trafford there is also Paul Pogba (contract expiring), who always teases Allegri’s imagination to change gears in midfield.

‘This double ‘free’ blow from United would certainly overturn Juventus’ transfer market and the Tuscan coach’s chessboard for next summer.’

The Old Lady’s interest in Paul Pogba is not news and a return to Turin has been mooted for the 29-year-old for several months.

The two stumbling blocks to the move could be that Pogba is more keen on a move to Spain and that Juve’s salary capping rule would mean that he would have to take a substantial pay cut to join.

On the other hand, if the club want him enough they may be able to offer him other incentives to make up the difference.

As for Martial, given his poor showing on loan at Sevilla, United would probably gladly agree to Juve’s offer. The surprising element of this story is that the Italians would want to take a chance on him after his recent struggles.

A number of United stars have fared well in Serie A after leaving Old Trafford in recent years. Ashley Young, Romelu Lukaku, Chris Smalling and Matteo Darmian have all excelled, which could offer further encouragement to Juve that a swoop for the two France internationals could be a very shrewd piece of business indeed.

Given that Jesse Lingard has also been linked with a free transfer to the same club when his United contract expires, there could be a few familiar faces gracing the Continassa in a couple of months’ time.

Four new things we've learnt this week about Man United's next manager

Manchester United’s search for a new manager has gathered pace this week and some facts are becoming clearer as the situation progresses. There are four candidates widely reported to be on the shortlist and the position of each has become clearer over the course of the week. Here are the latest developments.

1. Erik ten Hag has been interviewed and wants the job.

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is clearly one of the top candidates for the job and widespread reports from reliable sources claim that he has been interviewed by United for the job on Monday.

The interview is said to have gone well, with his level of English being considered adequate and ‘United think the fact that Ajax’s system, which leaves the manager to coach the team rather than be responsible for recruitment and other matters, would suit Ten Hag if appointed,’ The Times reports.

The fact that the interview took place obviously confirms that the Dutchman is interested in the job.

The Times also says that if appointed, the 51-year-old would want to bring his assistant at Ajax, Mitchell van der Gaag, and other backroom staff along with him.

‘It is also likely that he would bring in a Dutch coach who has a bond with United,’ The Times says, namechecking Robin van Persie, Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The compensation payable to Ajax would only be around £4 million.

2. Mauricio Pochettino’s candidacy all hinges on how his PSG contract is terminated.

Compensation payable for the other frontrunner for the job, former Spurs boss Pochettino, is much more of a bone of contention.

After an underwhelming season managing galacticos such as Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, Poch could be facing the axe at PSG, with Zinedine Zidane widely tipped to replace him.

However, as The Telegraph points out, ‘It is understood that Pochettino – who has just over 15 months remaining on his contract – and his staff would be entitled to a compensation package of between £15m and £20m if jettisoned.’

On the other hand, if United headhunt him and PSG hold on, it would be United paying compensation to the French club. So this thorny issue looks to have led to a bit of a Mexican standoff that could drag on into the summer.

United want to crack on before then – The Athletic’s David Ornstein claims they want to make the announcement by the end of this month – so this could mean that they push ahead with Ten Hag and forget Pochettino.

It is also possible that United could pretend to be close to signing Ten Hag to fool PSG into sacking Pochettino sooner rather than waiting for them to come for him. This strategy could explain some of the news stories that have been leaked this week, including that of the Dutchman’s interview.

3. Luis Enrique is highly unlikely to get the job.

Whilst The Times claims that United also intend to interview the Spain head coach for the job, The Telegraph is rightly skeptical.

‘With Enrique understood to be committed to managing Spain at the World Cup finals in Qatar in November and December, it is difficult to envisage how he could be in a position to take over at Old Trafford unless United agreed to a job share for seven months or Ralf Rangnick’s interim position was extended or another stop-gap brought in.’

His level of English may also be an issue.

For those reasons, it does seem very improbable that the former Barcelona star will be sitting in the Old Trafford dugout next season.

4. Julen Lopetegui is the most realistic backup option.

The Sevilla boss does speak some English and has an excellent pedigree. The only blot on his excellent copybook was his sacking from Real Madrid, but some say he was on a hiding to nothing, following Zinedine Zidane, not being first choice and not having been given time to impose his philosophy (he was sacked after just 138 days).

He has certainly over-achieved with Sevilla, who currently sit second in La Liga and who beat United in that Europa League final last term.

Whether he would be interested in the job is another question, but on paper he does seem like a much better fit than Enrique. According to fichajes.net via A Bola, United are in the process of ‘putting a proposal in his hands’.
