Rangnick has a bigger problem on his hands than poor finishing

Manchester United fans have long complained of the imbalances in the squad and one of those imbalances have come in the form of wage structure.

Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer attempted to resolve this issue but failed to do so across the board, or so it seems.

As can be seen by the graph above, the wage structure is one that makes little sense and could be a contributing factor to the poor performances this season.

After all, if players feel they’re not earning the right figures or feel their teammates are undeserving of theirs then that can upset the balance in the team.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been blamed for a lot of things on the pitch but perhaps it’s this factor here off the pitch that might have caused some destabilisation.

After all, if the Portuguese great is on such high wages, naturally some of his teammates will be looking for a pay rise themselves.

Putting that aside, the average wage is far too high, especially given how the squad has failed to deliver consistent trophies since Sir Alex Ferguson‘s retirement.

Besides the obvious mismanagement, United have had to pay players high wages in order to convince them to join an underperforming club.

It’s clear there needs to be a culture change in regards to this approach and those in charge need to stick to their guns a little more.

Ralf Rangnick is likely to make these amendments, particularly in his advisory role over the next two years.

If rumours are true that Mauricio Pochettino is the favourite to come in during the summer then the club would be hiring someone used to working under a tighter budget.

Rangnick puts United in first place for brilliant statistic despite woes

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick had hinted he couldn’t do more to get his stars to perform and it seems the statistics support him.

The German boss has had mixed results and performances since arriving at Old Trafford but the underlying numbers show his good work.

Rangnick appeared to suggest his hands are tied following the disappointing goalless draw with Watford.

After all, he had set his team up well enough to create numerous chances but was let down by poor finishing once again.

Given how much praise is given to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool for their chance creation, it’s incredible how Rangnick has outperformed them so quickly.

United’s 160 chances created since the former RB Leipzig man was handed the reigns is remarkable work all things considered.

Four teams scoring more goals than the Red Devils 20 goals is more evidence to the argument the players have been wasteful.

Short of scoring the goals himself, there’s not much more Rangnick can do.

Having said that, Manchester United’s fixture list since his appointment has been relatively merciful and might be a contributing factor to the high number of chances being created.

Nonetheless, it’s still impressive as he’s managed to get the players to understand his system well quickly while ensuring they’re tighter at the back.

Hopefully United don’t leave it too late before their statistics turn into actual results so that they can still secure a top-four finish.

Rangnick hints he was misled about crucial fitness issue

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that there is a striker shortage amongst the squad after the draw vs. Watford in the Premier League.

At the start of the season, many fans would have said that the team had quality options up front, but that standard hasn’t been seen as of yet.

Some players, including Anthony Martial, have left the club to go out on loan and with the poor fitness levels of Edinson Cavani, United have been left with only Cristiano Ronaldo as an out-and-out striker.

Other players such as Bruno Fernandes. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga can fill the position themselves but it’s clear to see the squad is lacking in that game-changing striker.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Rangnick admitted after the fifth draw of the season that there is a shortage of goal scoring options available to him.

Throughout the entirety of February, United drew four of their games, which really highlights the lack of depth since Martial’s departure.

During the final draw of the month, Ronaldo hit the post at the start of the game which seemed to affect the rest of his performance, as he got really agitated and started to look his age.

Cavani has missed a large portion of this season and hasn’t cracked on since his stunning goal vs. Fulham towards the end of last season.

This season, he has only scored twice and it looks increasingly likely that he will be leaving on a free transfer in June.

Rangnick summed up the difficult situation the team find itself in for the rest of the season when he spoke to the media after the result against Watford.

“Edinson, as you said, is not available, We don’t have that many other central strikers,” he said.

“I brought on for the last 15-20 minutes Marcus and Jadon. Almost all the offensive players we have in our squad were on the pitch.”

“As I said, we have to play with those players that we have available. I spoke with him [Ronaldo] yesterday before the game, before the training session he told me that he is fully fit to play and that’s why I decided to have him in the starting XI.”

This could be a hint that the manager feels misled in regard to Ronaldo’s fitness, as he was clearly visibly tired towards the end of the game.

United fans will be wondering why Rangnick loaned out Martial in the first place but the player only scored one goal in three starts before his temporary departure. Mason Greenwood‘s absence was also unexpected.

It looks all but confirmed that the squad will undergo a summer rebuild, with that striker role now potentially the top priority.

Rangnick is set to work on the rebuild behind the scenes once a new manager is appointed.

Rip up the shortlist, United's transfer landscape has suddenly changed completely

Manchester United must change their priority for summer signings after a month that has changed the entire balance of the squad.

It has long been held that the top priority for the club this summer should be a defensive midfielder, with the likes of West Ham’s Declan Rice and RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara among the favourites for the role.

A recent poll by The Athletic revealed that 93% of United fans see midfield as the priority for strengthening at the end of the season.

Under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Scott McTominay and Fred, both of whom are more natural box-to-box players, were employed as a ‘double pivot’ with neither alone seen as capable of performing the job of one specialist holding midfielder.

Under Ralf Rangnick, McTominay has usually been charged with the role alone, but has struggled to dominate games.

With 33-year-old Nemanja Matic having slowed over the years, it has seemed obvious that new blood is required in this area.

Meanwhile, just a few months ago, things in the centre-forward department seemed rosy.

A sprightly Cristiano Ronaldo was scoring consistently for United and in September Solskjaer proclaimed that his unusual fitness levels could mean he could carry on at the top level into his forties.

Edinson Cavani was a world class backup option and the incredibly talented Mason Greenwood was coming through. There were also the options of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, who had scored 45 goals between them in 2019/20.

Now, Ronaldo’s goals have dried up and he seems to be showing his age. Cavani tried to leave in the January window and has been riddled with injuries all season, while Greenwood’s off-field behaviour has left him suspended from the club and perhaps unlikely ever to wear the red shirt again.

Rashford’s form has been abysmal for the best part of a year now and Martial has been shipped off to Sevilla to try to rediscover his.

The signing of a goalscoring forward is now therefore essential.

Rangnick was filmed this weekend being asked if United would be signing [defender, Sevilla’s Jules] Koundé, Rice and [Borussia Dortmund’s Erling] Haaland this summer, to which he replied “what are you dreaming at night?”

A lighthearted joke perhaps, but the manager knows that strikers of the calibre needed at United do not come cheap and it seems unlikely that the club will provide the £250 million or more needed to fill both positions with their first (or near first) choice options.

There are, of course, cheaper options than the likes of Rice for the holding midfield position. One solution could be found in loanee James Garner, whose form for Championship side Nottingham Forest has been superb.

Garner, too, started life as a more attacking midfielder but he made the adjustment back to a number six at a younger age than “McFred” and has taken to it like a duck to water.

The academy graduate’s coming of age, with McTominay and the recently rejuvenated Matic as backups, could free up United to concentrate on their striker shortlist, which is believed to contain the likes of Haaland, Spurs’ Harry Kane and Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez.

Incredibly gifted 20-yo stakes massive claim for United starting role next season

Manchester United youngster James Garner is enjoying life on loan at Nottingham Forest, as a recent stat reveals.

After rejoining the Championship club at the start of the season, Garner and his team have excelled as they continue to fight for a playoff spot.

Just a couple of months ago, Forest sacked their previous manager and were bottom of the league but the overall form of the team has proved to be exceptional.

Since Steve Cooper joined the club, Garner has started in the majority of games in multiple different roles and has impressed for his side ever since.

We’re beginning to see just how versatile he is as he stars in the attacking midfield role, central midfield and even defensive midfield.

Many fans are starting to believe we have the perfect replacement for Nemanja Matic for next season.

With 77% pass accuracy, 4/7 accurate long balls, 4/8 accurate crosses, Garner was on form as his team won 2-0 against Bristol City.

Forest currently sit in ninth place in the Championship but are only three points behind Luton Town, who currently occupy the final playoff spot.

Garner’s current manager is known for securing playoff spots, after doing so with Swansea City for many seasons previously.

The young Englishman also got on the scoresheet himself this weekend and made six-ball recoveries throughout the 87 minutes he was on the pitch.

He was the highest-rated player according to Sofascore coming in with a rating at 8.2.

United fans will remain excited to see such a talented youngster get himself ready for first-team action in the Premier League next season.

United star’s brilliant performance against Watford solves one problem for Rangnick

Manchester United dropped further back in the race for Champions League qualification after a frustrating 0-0 draw with Watford at Old Trafford.

It was a similar story for Ralf Rangnick’s sid, who failed to convert big chances and ended up losing two points.

Despite starting strongly in the first half, United looked tired and miserable towards the end of the game.

Rangnick’s desperation could be seen in his substitutions. United ended the game with no holding midfielder and three strikers on the pitch.

Cristiano Ronaldo had one of his worst games in a red shirt as he missed some golden opportunities to score.

His performance in the second half deteriorated further and his tiredness was evident.

The 37 year old has played three full games in a row, and it has taken a toll on his body.

With Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood absent, Rangnick has no choice but to play the Portuguese up front.

United are struggling to finish chances and moving forward, it could prove to be a big issue if Ronaldo doesn’t find his goalscoring form.

Bruno Fernandes too had a frustrating afternoon and missed two of the best chances to put United in front.

This is when fans see the negative side of his game.

Instead of keeping a calm head and passing it simply, the 28 year old reverts to trying an audacious move, often resulting in United losing possession.

Bruno must improve this side of his game if United want to compete for titles.

On a positive note, Nemanja Matic proved once again why he should be starting in the team.

The Serbian’s ability to break lines and control the midfield allowed United to create multiple goalscoring opportunities.

It will be interesting to see United’s midfield makeup once Scott McTominay returns to full fitness.

Anthony Elanga was another bright spark in United’s attack.

His directness and pace kept Watford defenders on their toes. The Swede has been a breath of fresh air and has grasped his opportunity with both hands.

With respect to the Premier League, Arsenal are now two points behind United with three games in hand. With the Red Devils’ tough run of games in March, top four looks unlikely.

8 goals and 12 assists: Man United could replace Rashford with this exciting young forward

Manchester United are reportedly targetting a double swoop for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo and Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Palhinha.

They are two of the most exciting young players in Europe.

With Edinson Cavani likely to leave at the end of the season and Mason Greenwood unavailable for selection, United are said to be in the market for a forward.

According to The Mirror, United have been scouting Gakpo for a while and he has been recommended by manager Ralf Rangnick himself.

He has been PSV’s standout performer this season and has the traits to become a future superstar.

Gakpo has scored eight goals and registered 12 assists so far this season.

From a midfield perspective, Palhinha would be a smart signing.

The 26 year old has burst onto the scene over the past few years and his impressive performances earned him a call-up to his national team for the Euros.

United need a long-term replacement for Nemanja Matic and the Portuguese could be an interesting option.

Palhinha’s decision making and intelligence off the ball are two of his greatest attributes.

He is a complete midfielder and would slot in well in the number six role.

The 26 year old reportedly has a release clause of £50 million, but Sporting will listen to offers close to £20 million plus bonuses.

United crash out of the FA Cup after sloppy second half performance

Manchester United women have been knocked out the FA Cup by Manchester City after losing 4-1 at home.

It was City who had the first shot on target but it was easily held by Mary Earps, who was recently a part of that England squad that won the Arnold Clark Cup.

United’s first corner came from a misjudged pass back from the City defence and Katie Zelem’s delivery was almost turned in at the back post but went just wide.

Ella Toone forced a great save from Roebuck as she fired it in from the edge of the box for Roebuck to tip it over for the corner.

But Roebuck couldn’t keep the resulting corner out as a brilliant delivery from captain Katie Zelem curled all the way in!

City had some good spells of possession but it was United who seemed the hungrier of the two teams as they pressed and made good runs into the box.

There were a number of corners for City that left United fans nervous of their fragile 1-0 lead but the defence dealt with them well.

United got a free kick just before the half drew to a close and it was a training ground kick which bamboozled the City defence but unfortunately the ball through to Galton was slightly too heavy and Roebuck got there first.

It was City who came out fighting in the second half though and United gave them too much space in the box, allowing Hemp to find the back of the net just four minutes in.

After a brilliant first half, United fell apart in the second, concedingg two more goals in quick succession. Hannah Blundell left it for Earps who had no chance as two City players surged forward and White slotted it past the keeper.

Moments later Earps was beaten at her near post and it was 3-1 to City.

Toone had a chance from a set piece but she couldn’t keep her shot down.

United stood off their opponents and it soon became 4-1. Earps made a good save but Shaw was there to get the rebound.

After a promising start, United’s FA Cup dreams were crushed with a sloppy second half performance. Focus turns to the league now and securing Champions League Football next season.

Team: Earps, Blundell, Batlle, Thorisdottir, Caldwell, Zelem, Toone, Thomas (Hanson 67), Galton (Fuso 84), Groenen (Boe Risa 85), Russo (Bruun 67)

Stats show who was United's worst finisher in horrible home stalemate vs Watford

Manchester United failed to score at home this afternoon against lowly Watford, but the overall performance was one of the best of the season.

The problem was once again the side’s finishing, with a huge number of chances being squandered by most of the attacking players.

As @UtdArena noted, the Red Devils had ‘22 shots on goal’.

He goes on to say ‘three big chances missed, hitting the post, scoring an offside goal, missing other good chances and having an xG of 2+ (what title-winning teams generate).

‘Today, once again, was an example of poorly executing chances. It is on the players.’

Sofascore.com stats show that Bruno Fernandes had two shots on target, two off target and four blocked. He also missed two big chances and misfired with a number of shots.

Anthony Elanga blasted wide after a superb move and flick through by Paul Pogba, one of three shots off target. He registered none on target.

Pogba himself missed an easy chance and also had a shot blocked.

The statistics also show that Cristiano Ronaldo had one shot on target, two off target, one blocked and missed one big chance. What the statistics don’t record were other opportunities when he failed to react quickly enough to crosses and managed to block his own teammate’s shot (Fernandes).

@StatmanDave points out United’s excellent expected goals statistic in recent games. This stat is based on how many goals would normally be scored on average based on the number of chances created.

‘Man Utd accumulated an xG of 10.99 against:
4.1 vs Middlesbrough
2.17 vs Burnley
2.56 vs Southampton
2.16 vs Watford…’

And notes that in those four games Rangnick’s side scored only three goals, gained only three points and were knocked out of the cup.

When Rangnick’s Reds finally find their sccoring boots, they should be able to compete with the best teams in the league, if not the world. However, too many points may have been dropped by then for them to achieve an all-important top four finish.

Stat emerges showing United fans the only positive after Watford draw

Manchester United star Anthony Elanga was one of the few positives from the clash vs Watford.

The young winger has been a bright spark this season and followed up his goalscoring display vs Atletico Madrid with another solid display.

Ralf Rangnick will love Elanga’s defensive statistics in particular as the boss has been keen to stress everyone has a role to play in the team’s shape.

The Swede won all his tackles, won six duels, and two ball recoveries in a match United largely dominated.

Elanga also produced a decent attacking output with his 16 completed final third passes and his one chance created.

It could be argued he would still benefit from being brought off of the bench rather than starting matches but it’s difficult to not reward a player who is performing.

Nonetheless, Rangnick will have to protect Elanga as much as possible no matter how good his form is.

After all, it’s more important to ensure the academy graduates successes are sustainable and built on principals that will benefit him in the long run.

David Moyes heavily relied on Adnan Januzaj in his debut season and it’s safe to say that horribly burnt the then youngster out.

The Belgian winger then failed to recover since and was eventually moved on and is currently playing in Spain.

Hopefully Elanga can continue his development at a good pace and enjoy a successful career at United.

United desolate after dropping points at home despite a multitude of chances

Manchester United dropped points at home this afternoon as they drew 0-0 with Watford in the Premier League.

Watford started on the front foot with a series of corners in the opening two minutes but it was Ronaldo that got the first shot away as he hit the post in the fifth minute.

Bruno Fernandes was playing down the left side and seemed to be having a good game. A chance for him came around 12 minutes into the game as Ronaldo and Elanga exchanged some good link-up play through the middle before the latter played in Fernandes, whose shot was well blocked by Foster.

United thought they had made the breakthrough at the quarter of an hour mark. Anthony Elanga was at the heart of the build up with Alex Telles then making the cross, which Ronaldo turned into the back of the net. But he was deemed to be offside – still 0-0.

Then it was Fernandes’ chance to have a shot as he came flying in at the near post but the connection wasn’t clean and he turned it wide.

The bold line-up seemed to be settled and played well together in the opening twenty minutes.

United squandered another chance when Ronaldo was through on goal, caught by Foster but stayed on his feet to play it into Fernandes who, under no pressure, headed it over the crossbar.

United and Elanga had a penalty shout just before half-time but Kevin Friend waved it away and VAR agreed.

After a dominant first half performance, United had nothing to show for it as they headed in all square at the break.

Watford came out fighting in the second half, starting with a corner that saw De Gea boxed in, but luckily the resulting header didn’t find the target.

United had yet another penalty shout waved away after Sissoko brought Ronaldo down in the box and didn’t get much of the ball.

Elanga then missed a sitter after beautiful build up play involving much of the team, a lovely flick by Pogba saw the young star through on goal but he shot wide.

Ronaldo had another chance at the back post as Watford dithered allowing Fernandes to pick up the ball and put the cross in to his compatriot, but it looked as though it was blocked by his own man.

United’s chances were getting scrappier and scrappier but it didn’t matter, they just needed to get one over the line!

They threw all their attacking force behind this mission to find a goal but would it pay off?

The answer was no. The final whistle blew and the points were shared. Watford fans were relieved but United fans were left scratching their heads as another two points were dropped by their side.

This star must be dropped after another horrible display against Watford

Manchester United dominated but failed to score against Watford at Old Trafford this afternoon in the Premier League. Here are our player ratings for the game:

(A score of 6 is around average.)

David de Gea 6 – A spectator for most of this one thanks to some excellent defending.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Worked hard but just doesn’t create enough threat going forward and still gets drawn inside when defending, leaving the winger with too much space. That one seems a simple one to fix but he never seems to be able to fix it.

Victor Lindelof 7.5 – Nice solid defending.

Raphael Varane 7.5 – Good solid defending. It’s only Watford, but these two are looking like the A Team right now.

Alex Telles 6 – Made a few errors but also put in some great crosses in the first half. Seemed to lose his way and was rightly subbed in the end.

Nemanja Matic 8.5 – Superb midfield performance from Matic. If only he was 10 years younger.

Fred/strong> 7.5 – Played well. Even some skill moves in there. Really looks good when allowed to take up more advanced positions.

Bruno Fernandes 7.5 – Superb football other than the woeful finishing.

Paul Pogba 6.5 – Not bad from Pogba but he is capable of so much more.

Anthony Elanga 8 – Looked dangerous every time he got the ball. Brimming with confidence.

Cristiano Ronaldo 3 – Where did the GOAT go? Embarrassingly bad. Even without Cavani fit, he has to be dropped.

Substitutes

Jadon Sancho 7 – Confident and lively but didn’t quite produce the magic.

Marcus Rashford 5 – Ineffective.

Luke Shaw 5 – Wasted his own time and was poor with his crossing.

Could scintillating Spaniard follow Elanga as Rangnick's next introduction?

Manchester United’s u23s sealed a resounding victory against a depleted Derby County 5-2 last night. Here are our player ratings for the match:

(A score of 6 is around average)

Ondrej Mastny – 7 – Wasn’t called into question that often, but did make one excellent save in the first half and couldn’t do much more on the two conceded.

Charlie Wellens – 6.5 – A decent performance in possession getting forward and involved in attacks. Will be disappointed not to have got onto the score sheet. Aghatise did cause him troubles defensively at times.

Will Fish – 7 – A quiet evening but made was good with the ball at his feet and made some crucial tackles and blocks. Should have been stronger in the tackle for Derby’s first goal.

Bjorn Hardley – 7 – Similar to Fish, had a strong performance but was poor for Derby’s first goal.

Alvaro Fernandez – 9 – A sensational display up and down the pitch from the Spaniard, he was too much for Derby to handle and was untroubled defensively. His trademark surging runs led to him scoring a goal and two assists.

Charlie Savage – 9 – The best player on the pitch alongside Fernandez. The Welsh international was spraying balls around for fun but also did the gritty work defensively. Capped off a stellar performance with his first goal at the level.

Zidane Iqbal – 7.5 – Showed his technical skills well with close control and quick passes in tight areas. But just couldn’t quite find the finishing touch in the important moments.

Hannibal Mejbri – 8 – A more reserved performance from the Tunisian. He looked to keep it simple for the most part but still popped up with some great passes and grabbed himself a goal and assist.

Shola Shoretire – 7.5 – A good performance when involved and capped it off with a goal but was just outshone by his teammates.

Noam Emeran – 8.5 – Was a constant thorn in Derby’s side with his pace and runs in behind which were Elanga like. One of his best performances in a United shirt as he got on the score sheet and won a penalty.

D’Mani Mellor – 6.5 – Was a willing presser but after a few early chances he couldn’t get involved in attacks and cause Derby troubles.

Substitutes

Connor Stanley – 6 – Little time on the pitch but immediately won a free kick on his introduction and was a willing runner.

Manni Norkett – N/A – As usual he worked hard for the final minutes he was given.

Maxi Oyedele – N/A – Didn’t have enough time on the pitch to make an impact.

18 year old midfielder displays the mentality Rangnick is looking for

Manchester United’s u23s hosted bottom of the table Derby County at Leigh Sports Village last night.

The United youngsters got off to a bright start in the first minute of play with Shola Shoretire getting to the byline and centreing for Charlie Savage, but the midfielder’s shot was blocked and D’Mani Mellor’s follow up header went over the bar.

Just seconds later it could have been a penalty, as Mellor raced onto the end of a poor back pass and was bundled over. But the ref waved play on.

The fourth minute saw a great sweeping ball from Savage out to the left find Noam Emeran, who played into Shoretire on the edge of the box and a one touch pass opened up Zidane Iqbal in the area, but the Iraqi international slipped as his shot went wide.

The match was all United, with Savage pulling the strings from deep with some spectacular passes to start attacks.

Alvaro Fernandez opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. A give and go with Iqbal at the edge of the box allowed him to drive into the area and despite his first shot being saved, he was quickest to react and knock home his own rebound.

Ondrej Mastny wasn’t called into action until the 44th minute but it was a great save after Derby broke down the left.

Despite the total dominance of possession throughout the first half, United couldn’t manage to add a second and went into the break up 1-0.

The second half continued in a similar fashion with United on top. Iqbal worked an opening with deft footwork at the edge of the box but he couldn’t get his shot off quick enough and it was blocked.

Against the run of play, former United player Osazee Aghatise managed to run straight past three United players and equalise out of nowhere.

A second later he had another chance as United lost possession, but Will Fish did well to block. Suddenly Derby had an injection of energy in their play.

But United won a penalty in the 60th minute. Emeran was played in over the top down the right by Hannibal Mejbri and the Derby defender just shoved him in the back to topple him over.

Hannibal stepped up and put it low into the right corner just out of the grasp of the keeper’s finger tips.

Emeran doubled the lead in the in the 70th minute after Savage found Fernandez barrelling down the left and the Spaniard squared for Emeran to fire into the top right corner.

Emeran looked for another three minutes later as he wrestled possession away from the Derby defender and struck low but the keeper saved with his feet.

Savage capped a superb performance in the 78th minute with Fernandez playing provider again. Shoretire played Fernandez down the wing and the full back crossed to Savage to head into the corner.

Charlie Wellens almost got onto the score sheet late on when he was found in acres of space but he couldn’t beat the keeper with two attempts.

United did make it five moments later though, as Hannibal threaded it through the eye of the needle to pick out Shoretire running in behind, who finished into the bottom left corner.

Derby completely fell apart in the dying stages and United were getting in behind at will.

Manni Norkett thought he had bagged his first u23s goal as Shoretire squared to him for an open net tap in but the youngster was too keen and had strayed offside.

Derby pulled back a late consolation in injury time as Aghatise got in behind Wellens and hit the post before Bartosz Cybulski tapped in the rebound.

The victory brings United up the table into fourth place but still 10 points behind the leading Manchester City.

After his man of the match performance, Savage said despite the five he “still thinks we can get more goals.” A sign of the mentality to constantly improve that is instilled in Neil Wood’s side.

United: Mastny, Wellens, Fish, Hardley, Fernandez, Savage (Oyedele 87), Iqbal, Shoretire, Mejbri, Emeran (Stanley 77), Mellor (Norkett 84)

Rangnick says struggling star has no reason to be unhappy

Ralf Rangnick says Marcus Rashford has no reason to be unhappy at Manchester United.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of today’s home Premier League match with Watford, Rangnick was asked why he thought Rashford is struggling for form and why he appears to be unhappy.

‘He’s definitely not injured, he definitely has no issues with his shoulder any more,’ the manager replied.

‘I think we’ve talked a lot about Marcus in the last couple of weeks and I have personally spoken a lot with him.

‘If it counts if they’re on the pitch, and he started against Atletico Madrid, they just have to perform.

‘I’m pretty sure he’s not happy with his performance right now, but it doesn’t help if we discuss that every week and just think and make our thoughts about what could it be.

‘Is he not happy? I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be happy. Our results have been good in the last couple of weeks and months.

‘The team itself is in good shape, but yes he is right now trying to find his best possible shape and performance and we just try to give him helping hands with everything we can, with showing him video footage, with speaking with him regularly.

‘In training he’s in top form, top shape, that’s why I decided to play him.

‘But now it’s about having that transformation from training performance to the competition in the league and this is the next step he has to take.

‘By the way, we had a very similar situation as I can remember with Jadon [Sancho] six, seven weeks ago and he’s the best example of what can happen.

‘In the end it’s the player himself who has to perform and get the best out of his own performance.’

It has been a disappointing season for Rashford, who joined the squad in October having recovered from shoulder surgery that he underwent after Euro 2020.

The England star has played 22 games for the Red Devils since then but has only scored five goals and registered two assists.

His body language on the pitch has not been good and at times he has looked as if he has the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Goals off the bench in consecutive games against Brentford and West Ham suggested a return to form but three more poor performances against Middlesbrough, Burnley and Southampton saw him consigned to the bench again for the next two games.

Ronaldo responds to questions on his Man United future

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has stated he wants to win more trophies, amid reports he may leave this summer.

Rumours have emerged claiming the Portuguese great will looking for a new club should Ralf Rangnick’s men fail to qualify for next year’s edition of the Champions League.

Despite netting multiple times this season, Ronaldo has come under fire from some United fans who have been unimpressed with what little else he offers.

The former Juventus man is clearly a great goalscorer as evidenced by his career in general but also his 15 goals scored so far this season.

Despite the goals, Ronaldo has often been isolated out of play and isn’t contributing much else in regards to his role.

The former Real Madrid man is not a target man or someone who is capable of holding up the ball for his teammates.

Unfortunately this type of role is somewhat important to Rangnick’s transitional tactics.

Ronaldo is also not someone who is a playmaker or a false nine that will grab plenty of assists by playing in his goalscoring inside-forwards.

This means he’s a pure poacher who isn’t exactly known for his pressing either.

That role wouldn’t necessarily be an issue if his teammates could be trusted with getting the ball into the final third with ease.

Unfortunately that has been a problem for United this season and in a way, Ronaldo should have more goals than he’s actually netted.

Man United warned over Rashford amid concerning form this season

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has offered a hot take on Manchester United star Marcus Rashford in light of his recent performances.

The talented Englishman has looked a shadow of himself of late with some fans even calling for him to be sold or replaced.

According to the Daily Star, Carragher said: “I think we’re still waiting for Rashford to make that jump to become a Manchester United great or a player who can take them to big trophies.

“He’s not there yet and at the age he’s at, whether he’s about to sign a new contract or not, Manchester United need something better than Marcus Rashford right now.

“I think his performances this season don’t warrant him being in the team.”

What Carragher is saying isn’t completely outlandish in truth and he’s rather spot on with analysis all things considered.

Rashford’s performances certainly don’t warrant a starting XI spot and that’s why Anthony Elanga has been getting the nod ahead of him.

Of course the young Swede is deserving of his spot too, having impressed Ralf Rangnick massively since the boss arrived at United.

The Red Devils do need consistency from their starting players in a season that has been underwhelming overall.

Rashford’s talent is obvious and when he is in form he is one of the best Englishman in the Premier League if not in Europe.

Unfortunately he risks becoming another Luis Nani for Manchester United, with the Portuguese winger infamously becoming an inconsistent player.

Over time it becomes obvious that such players are unreliable and are inevitably moved on, as is what happened with Nani.

Where Carragher may be wrong is perhaps how he’s been a touch too harsh on Rashford, as this is perhaps the first full season he’s been poor in.

It comes on the back of playing through injury for around a year or two, as well as the emotional and physical exploits of the Euros.

Standing ovation for brilliant solo performance that helped United reach semi-finals - Match Report

Manchester United’s u18s hosted Leicester City at Old Trafford last night in the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup.

With Ralf Rangnick and friend Paul Mitchell in attendance, the pressure was on for the youngsters to impress.

The match got off to a tentative start with the opening attacks fizzling out in the final third for both sides.

Leicester’s Zach Booth drove into the box in the 11th minute but good defending from United saw his effort deflected wide.

Leicester seemed to be getting the better of the early stages but against the run of play, Alejandro Garnacho raced down the left in behind the Leicester defenders and centred. But a last ditch clearance cut it out.

Booth was causing trouble again in the 26th minute after Marc Jurado was dispossessed in a dangerous area, the American was teed up at the edge of the box but soared his shot over the bar.

Leicester did eventually take the lead in the 28th minute through former United academy player Chris Popov.

Leicester’s high press stole the ball from Sam Murray and Popov was found in the box to turn and shoot. Radek Vitek was left disappointed as he got his hand to it but the ball bounced off the ground and then his head before ricocheting into the goal.

The 31st minute saw the first really decisive play from United with some skilful interplay between Sam Mather, Charlie McNeill and Dan Gore. The play ended with Mather attempting a curling effort from 18 yards but it went just inches wide.

Lost possession caused United trouble throughout the first half and in the 36th minute Will Alves stole the ball from Rhys Bennett and struck low but Vitek saved with his feet.

A skilful dribble from Gore through the middle earned United a free-kick from 22 yards in the 40th minute.

Garnacho stepped up and hit it low and hard to the keeper’s side and struck the back of the net to equalise.

The second half began in a more open fashion with the chances flowing.

Garnacho’s pace continued to create openings as he raced in behind down the right and fizzed a ball across the box but could not find a teammate.

The Leicester keeper, Arlo Doherty, made two big saves in the 52nd to deny McNeill and Garnacho. Leicester then countered up the other end and it was Vitek’s turn to make a marvellous save, which was only matched by the following goal line clearance from Bennett.

McNeill had a few chances, first being played in by Kobbie Mainoo, but the usual prolific striker lashed his effort into the side netting.

Shortly after, Garnacho’s cross into the area was shielded down by the Leicester defender but McNeill was able to sneak in and dispossess him. The out rushing keeper was able to pounce quickly though and jump on McNeill’s dinked attempt.

With regular time coming to a close United was all over Leicester, desperate to finish the match before extra time.

McNeill almost did it with a driving run and effort from 20 yards out but he dragged his shot to the left and wide.

But it was two minutes later when Garnacho would succeed in taking the lead. A beautifully clipped ball to the left by Mainoo found the Spaniard, who took it down onto his left to smash past the keeper to seal the late winner.

The man of the match, Garnacho, was subsequently subbed off to be treated to a standing ovation from the Old Trafford faithful.

Moving on to the semi-finals, United will host the winners of Wolves and Brighton.

United: Vitek, Jurado, Bennett, Fredricson, Murray, Gore, Mainoo, Mather (Norkett 81), Hansen-Aaroen (Oyedele 65), Garnacho (Aljofree 90), McNeill

Unused subs: Wooster, Lawrence, Sharpe, Ennis

Rangnick lines up move for Bundesliga defender as doubts over Maguire grow

Manchester United has reportedly made an official enquiry about Borussia Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji.

The Peoples Person recently reported that the club had registered their interest in the central defender.

Now an enquiry has been made as he approaches the final year of his current deal with the German club.

That is according to The Daily Mail, who claim that talks to bring Akanji to Manchester indicate Ralf Rangnick wants a new centre-back.

The reason for another defensive addition despite signing Raphael Varane last summer is because of the inconsistent performances from captain Harry Maguire.

Eric Bailly and Phil Jones could also leave the club this season with the former recently rejecting a loan move to France.

Swiss international Akanji joined Dortmund in 2018 and has been an integral part of their defence in recent seasons.

He can play both centre-back positions which only adds to Man United’s vision of having versatile players.

Signing the defender for a fee close to £26million would be a smart move to make considering he is out of contract in just over one year’s time.

However, despite United weighing up options to sign the 26-year-old, The Mail reports that United are yet to make a formal approach despite reports in Germany claiming otherwise.

They are very aware of the defender’s willingness and present situation with Dortmund but are still yet to decide whether he is the right option to replace Maguire.

The outlet concludes by claiming that other targets are also being considered as Rangnick presents the United board with a list of centre-back options.

4-3-3: Rangnick will shock everyone with this electrifying line-up vs Watford

After a tough away fixture at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, Manchester United have what should be an easier task tomorrow at home to Watford in the Premier League.

Scott McTominay should have recovered from the illness that kept him out of Wednesday’s game and is expected to take the holding midfield role, although Nemanja Matic sent out a reminder of his qualities in that position when he came on as sub in Madrid and steadied the ship admirably.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick generally picks more attacking sides than his predecessors and given the lowly opposition, it is very likely that the more creative Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes will make up the rest of the midfield, with the more industrious Fred dropping to the bench.

Up front, Edinson Cavani is unlikely to have recovered from his groin injury so Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to continue at centre forward. Marcus Rashford could make way for Wednesday’s goal-scoring substitute Anthony Elanga, with Jadon Sancho keeping his place on the other flank.

The interesting decisions for Rangnick will once again come in defence, with goalkeeper David de Gea the only shoe-in for the starting XI.

Diogo Dalot seemed to be Rangnick’s first choice at right back until recently, when Aaron Wan-Bissaka was surprisingly recalled against Leeds and also preferred to replace Victor Lindelof against Atleti for the last 25 minutes.

However, unless there is an underlying reason for Dalot’s absence, we expect as the better attacking option, he will be recalled for tomorrow’s game.

At left back, Luke Shaw is usually Rangnick’s choice but Alex Telles is probably the stronger option from an attacking point of view. So again, because of the nature of the fixture, Shaw could be rested and Telles given a run out, especially after an excellent cameo off the bench on Wednesday.

This leaves the tricky decision of who to play at centre back.

Like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before him, Rangnick has stayed loyal to captain Harry Maguire through a long period of poor form. But another poor outing against Atleti begs the question, how long can this be indulged?

Victor Lindelof has done little wrong when called upon and Raphael Varane is the Rolls Royce of United’s centre back roster, so could it be time to rest Maguire?

On the one hand, an easy home game – on paper at least – could be a chance for the skipper to get a clean sheet and some confidence under his belt.

On the other hand, because it is an easy fixture, there is little to gain and a lot to lose for Maguire if he does come a cropper again. It would also be a good opportunity to have another look at the Lindelof-Varane partnership with the toughest match on the domestic calendar up next, away to Manchester City.

We predict it will be Maguire who makes way for that reason.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted XI for tomorrow’s game:

'Tough conversations': Man United legend knows the real reason behind fractured squad

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has blasted the team’s display in their 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

United would consider themselves lucky to come away with a result after putting out an abject performance for the majority of the match.

Super-sub Anthony Elanga showed once again that he can be a threat with his directness and pace, scoring the 80th-minute equaliser at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Rangnick criticised his players’ attitude in his post-match interview and urges his side to look up to Elanga as a role model.

Ferdinand too questioned United’s tactics on BT Sport.

‘I think United just need someone with a structure, come rain or shine this is how we’re going to play,” he said.

“I still watch United and still haven’t got a clue what they’re trying to achieve, I’m left scratching my head. There’s something missing.”

The six-time Premier League winner believes that the players need a strong manager who would not tolerate bad attitudes of any kind.

He stated: “I didn’t think that until Sir Alex left, you could see the manager had run the place from top to bottom and set the tone, set the culture, the philosophy.’

“Everything drives from the manager and filters down from him. United are missing that, they need someone to come in and be strong.”

“That dressing room has seen off far too many managers for it not to have a strong manager go in there to deal with the personalities and to really break it down to people.”

Rangnick has steadied the ship after a disastrous start to the season, and the team has shown significant improvement defensively.

Whatever the club’s decision on the next manager may be, the German must have a say on the final appointment.

The best stat in Rangnick's reign emerges after Atletico draw

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has a remarkable track record that has emerged in light of the result with Atletico Madrid.

The former RB Leipzig boss has won over fans with his frank approach and clear press conferences and slowly but surely the results are matching his intentions.

The statistic above proves lots of positive things about Rangnick as a manager, even if results haven’t been quite what fans want.

A substitute scoring or assisting a goal in seven of his 16 matches in charge is a great record that should be praised.

It shows that Rangnick has a real understanding of his players, knows what their profiles are and how to get the best out of them.

It also shows he knows not just where or how to use them but also when to use them, in what stages of a match or depending on the opposition the team is taking on.

In an ideal world, Rangnick wouldn’t need to turn to his bench that often for inspiration or for changing the result of a match.

Preferably those who start would have handled the match situations well enough that the bench isn’t needed for that reason.

Instead, the bench should be turned to for resting the starting players who performed well enough to get the desired result.

Of course, this is speaking only in ideals and the reality is far different from that, particularly with United.

Given that reality, it’s good to know Rangnick knows what weapons he has on hand and how to use them best.

Man United fans told what happened at half-time vs Atletico

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has revealed what he said to his players at half-time in the disappointing draw vs Atletico Madrid.

The German boss oversaw a poor performance from his players as they struggled to assert any kind of dominance in the 1-1 tie.

United only stepped up their levels in the last 15 minutes of the match as Rangnick says and managed to score the equaliser via Anthony Elanga.

Atletico themselves scored very early on in the first half, with Harry Maguire losing Joao Felix who slotted home brilliantly.

The Red Devils lacked serious composure and were incredibly sloppy in their play, particularly in the opening moments of the game.

The players eventually settled but it can be argued that when they did, they failed to pose a threat nonetheless.

In fact, Manchester United ended the match with just two shots on target and only seemed to threaten when Rangnick made his substitutions.

Nemanja Matic and Elanga particularly had an influence, with the former bringing calmness and stability to the team while the latter made sure to capitalise on the through ball from Bruno Fernandes.

The Serbian midfielder left fans wishing he was ten years younger as his influence on the match was clear, as was United’s need for a defensive-midfielder of his ilk.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was often criticised for blaming bad performances on a lack of conviction and bravery but fans can now see it was obvious what was missing.

Rangnick’s setup leaves little room for criticism and so the players are exposed if they don’t turn up to perform.

Scholes tells Man United fans what he really thinks of Rangnick

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes opened up on Ralf Rangnick’s decision-making and the team’s performance vs Atletico Madrid.

The German boss oversaw the 1-1 draw but it’s safe to say his men were far from their best in regards to the shift they put in.

Scholes has somehow managed to compliment and insult Rangnick at the same time after the intense clash.

The former midfielder seemed to praise the former RB Leipzig man’s decision-making in regards to the substitutes but labelled the performance as a ‘typical’ one under him.

Scholes is partially correct in regards to how it has sometimes been under Rangnick but this has not always been the case.

The players and results have both improved since he was named interim manager but unfortunately he has been let down on occasion.

The players have still not fully wrapped their heads around Rangnick’s methods and it’s clear he needs a pre-season with them.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem he will get that as he’s expected to move into his advisory role in the summer.

The players have also shown moments of mental weakness, whether that’s in a lack of composure or a lack of fight.

For whatever reason, the squad has looked broken since the start of the campaign, with some blaming last season’s Europa League final loss as the cause.

After all, Tottenham Hotspur experienced something similar with Mauricio Pochettino after the Champions League final loss, with it even resulting in him losing his job.

Man United star writes his name down in history after Atletico Madrid clash

Manchester United star Anthony Elanga has found himself in the history books after becoming the fifth-young Champions League goalscorer for the club.

Had it not been for the young winger, Ralf Rangnick’s men would be heading home without anything to keep them going.

Elanga comes after Wayne Rooney, Mason Greenwood, David Beckham, and Phil Jones and it’s safe to say he impressed in his substitute appearance.

The versatile attacker has gone from strength to strength under Rangnick and met the challenge vs Atletico superbly.

United fell 1-0 behind relatively early on in the match but thanks to Elanga’s substitute goalscoring performance, the team will head back with a draw.

Fans settled for the result considering the team was poor for much of the match and conceded early.

Elanga’s goal meant the Red Devils could hope to learn from their lessons and dominate the home clash.

Rangnick has rarely repeated mistakes so it’s likely he would have known what went wrong vs Atletico.

After all, his substitutions made the difference once again, though fans will be wondering why the selected XI couldn’t get the job done themselves.

Rangnick will be disappointed by how timid his players were as they were outfought by the home side.

Luckily the Spanish giants ran out of gas and Elanga was able to capitalise on it all.

Super-sub Elanga helps United fight back in Champions League clash

Manchester United fought back to clinch a draw at Atletico Madrid as substitutes made all the difference in the Champions League.

The game started with Atletico Madrid on the front foot, urged forward by the crowd and they scored inside seven minutes with a header from Joao Felix which went in off the post.

It was a deserved lead as United had seen very little of the ball in the opening ten minutes, their passing was sloppy and their was no ambition to push forward.

United showed a glimpse of a fightback as Rashford showed his strength to get round a couple of defenders but Fernandes’ shot took a deflection. The resulting corner was easily dealt with by the hosts.

Though United were having more possession than Madrid, they showed no desire to use it to attack.

Just before half-time Atletico had a chance to double their lead, but a deflection off Fernandes changed the flight of the ball so it was just behind Llorente, who hooked it onto the crossbar.

The second half began much like the first half ended, with Madrid crowding United out and showing more desire to find the next goal.

United began to grow into the game but their final third decisions lacked conviction and ultimately didn’t lead to a shot.

It was hard to see where a breakthrough could come from for United. Could the substitutes be the difference for United?

Elanga did bring a spark to the game and darted round defenders with ease. He laid it off to Fred, who was brought down just outside of the area and the stage was set for Ronaldo’s heroics. However his free-kick flew over the bar.

Nonetheless it was substitute Elanga who found the breakthrough for United in the 80th minute, a beautifully weighted pass from Fernandes picked out the run of the academy graduate, who calmly kept running and slotted it past the keeper.

Though United had dampened spirits in Madrid, the Spanish side didn’t give up as they tried to get their lead back. They had a good chance in the 87th minute from a corner but they rattled the crossbar again.

Telles showed strength and skill as he delivered a number of great crosses into the box and wriggled through defenders to keep possession.

It finished all square in Spain, setting up a tense return leg at Old Trafford in three weeks time. United turned things around late on and managed to get the result.

Elanga the hero for United, but these two stars were hugely disappointing vs Atletico

Manchester United secured a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid this evening in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16. Here are our player ratings for the game.

(A score of 6 is around average.)

David de Gea 6 – Had a quiet game other than picking the ball out of the net.

Victor Lindelof 7 – Thought he did OK on an unusual role, but it wasn’t natural in possession.

Raphael Varane 7 – Did little wrong.

Harry Maguire 4 – Lost Felix for the goal, gave the ball away too often … poor.

Luke Shaw 5 – A lazy performance.

Fred 4 – Outplayed and outclassed for much of the game.

Paul Pogba 2 – Horrible performance from Pogba. One good pass to Bruno in the second half, everything else was a train wreck. Was even knocked off the ball easily, which is normally one of his greatest strengths.

Bruno Fernandes 6.5 – Poor for the most part, but then gets an assist. You just can’t stop this guy even when he’s playing badly.

Marcus Rashford 2 – Confidence rock bottom, body language all wrong, a sad outing for Rashford.

Cristiano Ronaldo 6 – Didn’t do much, but didn’t get much service.

Jadon Sancho 7.5 – One of United’s better players, but that’s not saying much.

Substitutes

Nemanja Matic 7 – Added grit and steel, helped turn the game.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Did OK.

Alex Telles 6.5 – Did OK. Lovely move in injury time.

Anthony Elanga 8 – What a sub performance. Not just the goal, but the overall menace.

Jesse Lingard 6 – Did not influence the game much.

Brazil winger dreams of PL move amid interest from Man United

Ajax right-winger Antony has admitted he would love a move to the Premier League amid interest from Manchester United.

The Brazilian international has recently been linked with many of the top European clubs after a sensational season already.

Ajax are currently in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time since the 2018-19 season with the club storming the league already.

Antony has scored 11 goals from 26 appearances in all competitions this season including two goals in the group stages of the Champions League.

He has already beaten his goalscoring numbers from last season when he only scored 10 and is now attracting interest from across the globe.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the winger’s preference is to play in England or Spain when he eventually moves on from Ajax.

He quoted Antony in a tweet that said, “Ajax is the place where I feel happy. But of course, I do think about a move in the future sometimes.”

“Premier League & La Liga are the leagues I find beautiful”, he told @MikeVerweij.”

“When the time is right, I hope to play there”.

Barcelona previously registered interest in the young Brazilian with reports claiming they still remain interested despite recently signing Ferran Torres.

The Manchester Evening News are reporting that the links to Man United are because of Erik ten Hag’s recent managerial links to the club.

The Dutch manager is said to be considered one of the top targets at the club and could even bring some of Ajax’s latest stars to the squad.

Man United star's recent comments hint at brand new contract

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has defended his ability to play out from the back, amid criticism from certain sections of the fanbase.

In an interview with UEFA, the Spaniard spoke about his early days at Atletico Madrid. He stated:

“I like the fact I was born in Madrid, but at the end of the day, it’s just a city.

“Now I feel as if I’m from Manchester; I just feel like anyone else from Manchester. Where you are loved and welcomed in your home.

“I’ve been here for many years and, obviously, anything can happen in life, in the world of football, but honestly I don’t see myself away from Manchester United.”

Before the start of the season, there were doubts about De Gea’s starting position in the team, with Dean Henderson the likely replacement.

However, the Spaniard has had a stellar campaign and has single-handedly saved United in plenty of games.

He has been United’s most consistent player and has regained his lost form.

De Gea has made an astounding 96 saves in the Premier League this season- the highest among all goalkeepers in the division.

However, some fans have criticised him for his carelessness with the ball at his feet.

The 31-year-old addressed this claim:

“What a goalkeeper has to do is to stop goals going in; that’s the most important thing. And then, if you have the talent or the quality to be able to play with your feet and have good vision, that’s phenomenal.

“I feel very comfortable playing with my feet, playing out from the back, following the lead of my team, but it depends on the coach and the style of play.”
