United’s transfer window becomes shambles after club inexplicably refuses lucrative deal

Manchester United have reportedly told Jesse Lingard that he will not be allowed to leave this transfer window.

As per David Ornstein (The Athletic), the club prefers keeping the player until the end of his existing contract, despite heavy interest from West Ham United and Newcastle United.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed Ornstein’s claim on social media this evening.

‘Manchester United want to keep Jesse Lingard at the club. NO deal, NO chance. They’re not accepting Newcastle approaches, the position on club side is clear,’ he tweeted.

‘Lingard’s disappointed as he wanted to go but club not open to negotiate with Newcastle or West Ham.’

Earlier today, The Athletic reported that Lingard had met interim manager Ralf Rangnick to make a final push to join Newcastle.  The German coach is said to have backed Lingard’s decision to leave for first-team football.

However, the club wanted a £2.5 million loan fee and a £12 million survival bonus, in case the Magpies avoid relegation from the Premier League.

United could have recuperated a significant amount for a player who could leave for free in the summer but have decided otherwise and are willing to let another player leave for free next summer.

On a positive note, Lingard could play a vital role in United’s push to land Champions League qualification.

The departure of Anthony Martial to Sevilla and Mason Greenwood‘s recent exclusion means that Rangnick has very little to choose from.

It will indeed be an uphill task for Rangnick to get his side a top-four spot in the Premier League, especially after surrounding teams have strengthened significantly this window.

If the manager can help Lingard find the form he showed for West Ham last season, today’s decision might prove to be a very smart one.

Mason Greenwood situation intensifies after these latest substantial developments

Nike have ended their relationship with Mason Greenwood.

The sporting brand released a statement: “We have suspended our relationship with Mason Greenwood. We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”

The 20 year old was arrested yesterday on suspicion of sexual assault after disturbing images and audio were shared on Instagram by his girlfriend Harriet Robson.

Greenwood’s name has also been removed from all of United’s merchandise on their official website.  At this moment it is the correct decision by the club, who have taken a stern stand against violence.

The club yesterday stated that until further investigation, the 20 year old will not be a part of the United squad.

An earlier report claimed that Greater Manchester Police had interviewed Greenwood, and images have been circulated of police cars outside his house.

The report read: “Detectives have been granted additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who is being held on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman.”

“The suspect was arrested yesterday (Sunday 30 January) afternoon and remains in custody.”

“Enquiries are ongoing and the victim is being offered specialist support.”

The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell also reported that United has refused to assist Greenwood legally and have asked him to arrange for his lawyer.

United linked with audacious last-minute swoop for Premier League star

Manchester United are reportedly still interested in signing Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma.

According to French journalist Fabrice Hawkins, the Red Devils are one of the three clubs keen on buying the player this January- the other two being Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.

Brighton are demanding a transfer fee of €45 million.

With the departure of Donny Van de Beek to Everton, United are left thin in the midfield department. Previous reports have already claimed Ralf Rangnick’s desire to buy a midfielder, hence a deal would make sense.

Bissouma is one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League and has established himself as a key member of Graham Potter’s side.

He is good on the ball and extremely press-resistant – a trait none of United’s midfielders possesses.

However, the main issue might be his behaviour off the pitch. In early October last year, he was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in a nightclub in Brighton.

The details of the incident are unknown, and no further updates have been given. It is quite difficult to judge the situation surrounding the player at the moment.

After the incident with Mason Greenwood, Man United could be sceptical of buying a player involved in a similar case.

Moreover, The Times reported earlier today that United are unlikely to land any players today.

Mason Greenwood to remain in custody after judge issues ruling

Greater Manchester Police have been granted additional time to interview a man, understood to be Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood, following arrest.

Greenwood was arrested yesterday on suspicion of rape and assault following the publication on his girlfriend, Harriet Robson’s Instagram account of video, photos and audio suggesting that he had assaulted her.

By law, the police have 24 hours to interview a suspect before they either charge or release them from custody.

Should they require more time, they have to apply to the courts for special dispensation to hold the person for longer, which would appear to be what has happened in this case.

A statement issued by the force reads ‘”Detectives have been granted additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who is being held on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman.

‘The suspect was arrested yesterday (Sunday 30 January) afternoon and remains in custody.

‘Enquiries are ongoing and the victim is being offered specialist support.’

There is little doubt that this refers to the United player.

The club has already issued a statement saying that the 20-year-old would not take part in training or matches until further notice.

Sponsors Nike also have issued a statement sharing their concern about the situation

Meanwhile teammates such as David de Gea, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford have all stopped following Greenwood on social media.

United star could make dramatic exit as two new bids come in - The Athletic

Manchester United star Jesse Lingard reportedly has two teams chasing his signature as the deadline day madness continues.

Ralf Rangnick has been clear about what his transfer policy is in regards to players that want to leave.

According to The Athletic, following a meeting at Carrington this morning, Rangnick gave Lingard the green light once more to depart on loan, leaving the final decision up to the board.

It’s understood Newcastle United have upped their offer while West Ham have put forward a new bid with better terms than last year’s second half of the season loan.

ESPN’s Rob Dawson confirms Rangnick and Lingard had a positive meeting and that the manager has supported the player in his desire to leave.

Rangnick has insisted that a club of United’s level shouldn’t have to convince their players to stay and so was clear about what he felt in regards to outgoings.

Lingard’s decision to leave was never going to be blocked by the German boss but it’s interesting to see what it means for the club’s squad numbers.

Anthony Martial‘s loan to Sevilla and Amad Diallo‘s loan to Rangers could see the Red Devils a little short on attacking options, especially if the Englishman chooses to leave.

Lingard enjoyed a successful time with West Ham in his last loan spell but it’s unclear whether the board will allow such a move again.

It was understood that the London club were considered a direct rival for the top four spots and so United weren’t comfortable with approving the deal.

Newcastle United are the more comfortable option but the Red Devils have played hardball so far.

Arsenal ready unexpected bid for Espanyol star on deadline day

Arsenal ready unexpected bid for Espanyol star on deadline day

With 12 goals in La Liga this season, Espanyol striker Raul de Tomas has emerged, with just hours to go of deadline day, as a target for Arsenal.

A report in the Express claims that once Aubameyang’s loan deal to Barcelona is completed, the Gunners will rush through a move for 27-year-old Raul de Tomas.

The two-time capped Spanish international moved to Espanyol in 2020 from Benfica, starting his career as a product of the Real Madrid academy – the striker has scored 30 career La Liga goals, with and additional 74 goals scored in Spain’s second tier.

The transfer would at least appease fans that desperately wanted a new striker in the doors before the deadline, but it would represent a real climb down on targets such as Dusan Vlahovic, Alexander Isak, Jonathan David and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

United star begs Rangnick to intervene on transfer as clock ticks down

Newcastle United are looking to secure a deadline day signing in Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard.

The club are currently fighting a relegation battle and have had a massive transfer window in their bid to secure survival and Premier League football next season.

Throughout the January transfer window, they have been trying to secure Lingard on loan but have failed to meet Man United’s demands.

According to 90min, Newcastle still remain hopeful that they can secure Lingard on deadline day.

The Englishman has agreed personal terms with The Magpies and will be hoping that the two clubs can find a solution so he the he can finish his contract elsewhere.

Despite the deal collapsing a few days ago, the clubs never lost contact with each other and a deal still could be struck before the deadline tonight.

The Red Devil’s were demanding a fee that required a £12m survival bonus which Newcastle didn’t agree with and was the cause of the original deal collapsing.

The club, currently struggling in the Premier League, would also have to pay a loan fee of £2.5m for the deal to go ahead.

However, the outlet says that United are still looking to move Lingard on before the closure of the transfer window.

They conclude by saying talks are more advanced than they ever have been and there is now real optimism that a move to St James Park is on the cards.

Meanwhile, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, “Lingard will meet with interim manager Ralf Rangnick this morning and make one final push to join Newcastle United on a loan basis before the transfer window closes.

“The 29-year-old attacking midfielder spoke to interim manager Rangnick at the club’s Carrington training ground on Sunday and their dialogue continued into the evening,” he reports.

“Lingard wants the German coach to help push through his proposed move after the Manchester United board set terms for a deal that Newcastle deemed unacceptable.

“Newcastle are of the understanding there may be some flexibility on [the fees demanded by United], which has generated a dose of late optimism that it could still happen.”

At this moment in time, it is unclear if Rangnick will grant the player’s desire to leave even though he originally gave his blessing. The circumstances around Mason Greenwood‘s arrest may have changed the landscape.

The Express reports that the North East club will push for the signing of the 29-year-old until the very last minute of the transfer window.

Newcastle are also interested in Dean Henderson and it is possible that the club will also be looking to secure him throughout deadline day.

However, they can only land one player from United on a loan basis.

United suspend Greenwood as girlfriend's father makes statement about abuse accusations

Mason Greenwood has been suspended by Manchester United pending an investigation into allegations of domestic violence made by his girlfriend, Harriet Robson.

According to the BBC’s Simon Stone, United have released a statement saying ‘Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.’

Meanwhile, Ms Robson’s father made a statement to The Mail, saying:

‘The first thing we knew about this was at 6am this morning. It is dreadful. I’m just coming to terms with it all.

‘As a father you don’t want to know things like that happening to your daughter. The police have been round and she has made a statement to them.

‘She has told us her phone has been hacked. We told her to take it down, which she has done but it’s out there now so it is too late.

‘She is devastated because she didn’t want it released. We have known him since the under 21s. He has been part of our family for two or three years.

‘Their relationship has not been good for the last few months. She is completely devastated by it all.

‘They were very much in love and have been together for a while. The police are dealing with it now.’

United should be commended for their swift action on the matter, especially given the statement made by Mr Robson.

Regardless of Greenwood’s guilt or innocence or the circumstances, it would not be possible for him to carry on at the club until the situation is resolved.

It certainly does not look good for the 20-year-old, whose football career could be over if found guilty of any charges on the matter brought by the police.

Arsenal face pressure to sell striker to Newcastle in next 24 hours

Arsenal face pressure to sell striker to Newcastle in next 24 hours

Arsenal fans face an anxious final 24 hours in the January transfer deadline, with Newcastle likely to test Mikel Arteta’s side with a bid to sign striker Eddie Nketiah.

With news that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is set for a straight loan move to Barcelona, the departure of Eddie Nketiah would certainly leave the Gunners a little light in the goalscoring department – unless a signing is made in the final hours on Monday.

The 22-year-old is high on the radar of Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, according to the Guardian, but having turned down advances of Crystal Palace, it doesn’t seem to like the Gunners are keen to lose the Englishman.

Should Nketiah refuse to sign a new contract, which expires this summer, an option to buy or up-front transfer from cash-rich Newcastle could yet tempt a late move on deadline day.

'Here we go': Romano confirms Premier League switch for United star

Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek will join Everton on loan until the end of the season, according to two Tier 1 journalists.

As reported here earlier, it had become a two-horse race between Everton and Crystal Palace for the player’s signature, with United having agreed terms with both clubs.

And just a few hours later, The Athletic’s David Ornstein tweeted that the player has opted for the Toffees.

‘EXCL: Donny van de Beek has this morning decided to join Everton on loan from Manchester United for rest of season,’ Ornstein tweeted.

‘Crystal Palace were in frame but #EFC agreed with #MUFC yesterday & 24yo #NED attacking midfielder made choice today.’

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano then confirmed the news with his famous ‘Here we go’:

Donny van de Beek to Everton, done deal and confirmed! The decision has been made, here we go. Donny confirmed few minutes ago his choice to Frank Lampard.

‘Everton joined the race yesterday, as revealed. They will cover full salary until June plus loan fee.’

Everton are expected to announce former Chelsea player and boss Frank Lampard as their new manager in the coming hours and Van de Beek could be his first signing.

Although United boss Ralf Rangnick was desperate for the Dutchman to stay at Old Trafford, the move is an excellent opportunity for the player to get regular first team minutes in the Premier League and to work under a manager who is one of the best midfielders in Premier League history.

It is a fantastic opportunity for the 24-year-old to learn from the tutelage of someone who occupied a similar role to incredible success.

A similarly-qualified mentor would also have awaited him at Palace in the form of Patrick Vieira but the Everton switch means much less upheaval for a player already living in the North West.

If the deal goes through as expected, Van de Beek could make his debut against Brentford at Goodison Park in next weekend’s FA Cup fourth round tie.

Matches against Newcastle United and Leeds United in the Premier League will then follow.

Greenwood news could force United into huge last-minute gamble on this incredible star

Manchester United could still make a shock last minute signing in the current transfer window as FC Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembélé looks finally set to leave.

United tried to sign the French star in the summer 2020 window after they failed to agree a deal with Borussia Dortmund for Jadon Sancho. However, the deal collapsed at the last minute, with some reports claiming the clubs couldn’t agree on whether it would be a loan or a transfer and others claiming the player had refused to come.

But after another season and a half of serious injuries, the player is now six months from the end of his contract at Barça and has refused to accept a new deal which includes a pay cut from his current £210,000 per week salary.

According to reports, the Blaugrana are willing to accept €20 million (£16 million) for a player they bought for €140 million in 2017 and local Catalan paper Sport expects the situation to be resolved before the window closes tomorrow.

‘The future of Ousmane Dembélé could be decided in the next 48 hours,’ the outlet claims.

‘The player’s agent is working on solutions to the current situation and, as Sport has learned, there are three teams that would be interested in signing the winger: Chelsea, Manchester United and PSG.

‘… United, now have [a] great admirer of Dembélé on their bench. This is Ralf Rangnick, who already tried to take him to Salzburg in the summer of 2016 and has always spoken highly of the French international’s potential and characteristics.’

Sport notes that the complications involved in the deal might make it hard to agree with just 48 hours of the transfer window remaining. On the other hand, as the Catalans have already signed a replacement in Adama Traore, they may even be forced to reduce the asking price even further. Salary capping rules may mean he needs to be offloaded to register the former Wolves man.

Meanwhile, the hugely devastating news emerging this morning that Mason Greenwood’s girlfriend Harriet Robson has accused him of domestic violence may force United to act quickly.

If there is a possibility that this will lead to Greenwood being removed from the team, from having an embarrassment of riches in the wing department, United boss Ralf Rangnick might now be down to Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga.

Anthony Martial and Amad Diallo have already left on loan.

This means that in regard to Dembélé, the club may have to consider a late move for a player they have targeted before who is now available at a bargain price and who is much admired by the manager.

Even as a cut-price deal, the signing would represent a huge gamble. Dembélé is one of the most gifted wingers in the world, but his injury record is horrific.

Fabrizio Romano: 100% agreement, United star's future to be decided in 'the next hours'

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims that Donny van de Beek’s future will be decided in the next few hours.

The Dutchman has never been able to hold down a regular place in United’s first team since his 2020 move from Ajax for €39 million.

He recently made his 50th appearance for the club but has only amassed 1,836 minutes, giving an average of just 35.72 minutes per game.

This drops to 579 minutes from 27 games in the Premier League, for an average of just 21.4 minutes.

As reported here yesterday, according to various sources Manchester United have accepted loan offers from both Crystal Palace and Everton, with Valencia also having been linked with a pursuit.

However, the Spanish interest does not seem to have developed, leaving the two Premier League sides neck and neck for the coveted signature.

Romano tweeted ‘Donny van de Beek update. Everton have an agreement in place with Manchester United on straight loan deal, paying 100% salary until June.

‘Decision only up to the player between Crystal Palace and Everton now.

‘Van de Beek will pick his next club in the next hours.’

Whichever club he chooses, the news will come as a blow to manager Ralf Rangnick, who has publicly stated he asked Van de Beek to stay at Old Trafford for the rest of the season.

Fans are divided on the subject, with some being happy for the player that he will finally get a chance to establish himself in the Premier League and others being concerned that the club is leaving itself short-handed in midfield.

With Anthony Martial and Amad Diallo already having left on loan and Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones the subject of much speculation, the January window is set to see United’s first team squad trimmed significantly.

Another family member complains on Instagram about United's cruel treatment of player

Jesse Lingard’s brother Louie Scott has blatantly criticised Manchester United on his social media account.

Lingard has hardly featured in United’s first team this season and yet has been denied a loan move away from the club.

Previous reports claim that moves to West Ham and Spurs have been blocked by the club’s controlling shareholder, Joel Glazer because he does not want to strengthen a rival for Champions League places.

Newcastle United have been strongly discouraged by United slapping on a £12 million relegation escape clause to the loan deal presented.

The 29 year old is reportedly very unhappy with the situation and his brother’s Instagram post confirms the family’s thinking on the matter.

The post has a photo of Lingard on loan at West Ham last season and reads ‘A year ago we was allowed out on day release,’ with three laughing emojis.

‘Now we know what Akon felt like,’ referring to the song ‘Locked Up’ which has the refrain ‘they won’t let me out, they won’t let me out’.

With just 48 hours of the transfer window remaining, time would appear to be running out for Lingard to find his escape route, despite having the blessing of manager Ralf Rangnick to leave.

It is clear that United – or Glazer at least – are jumpy about loaning him to a Premier League club and perhaps are holding out in the hope of finding a foreign club willing to take him.

However, the finances involved and Lingard’s wishes could make that extremely difficult to pull off and if left to the last minute, the English clubs that had been queueing up to take him could have already turned their attentions elsewhere.

Scott’s Instagram post is reminiscent of that of Sergio Romero’s wife in October 2020, who condemned the club for not allowing her husband to leave despite being demoted to third choice keeper.

Her complaints fell on deaf ears and Romero was consigned to obscurity for the whole 2020/21 season.

Man United star's career might be over after shocking accusation

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has been accused of domestic violence by his girlfriend Harriet Robson.

An hour ago, a story was put out on Harriet’s Instagram account showing the bruises on her body with a caption stating: “To everyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood actually does to me”.

The series of disturbing images clearly indicates a physical attack. She later posts an audio clip in which Greenwood was being abusive and threatening her.

The news has shocked United fans waking up this morning, as they fear what’s in store for the 20 year old.

Greenwood has been touted as one of the most promising talents coming from United’s academy, with a bright future in front of him.

With United refusing to invest in another young striker, many believed that the 20 year old would eventually lead the line for United.

If there is any truth to the story, it is shocking and disgraceful behaviour that the club surely cannot and will not tolerate. It therefore immediately puts his career in jeopardy. The club will surely investigate and try and figure out the details, but so far it looks bad for the Englishman.

Reports on Twitter claim that the Greater Manchester Police have been informed, but this has not as yet been confirmed.

Of course, one should not come to a conclusion before hearing both sides of the story, so United fans will be hoping for a prompt response from Greenwood.

There may also be other explanations, for example Ms Robson’s account could have been hacked and the photos and audio faked.

However, the fact that the story has not been taken down is an ominous sign that she did post it herself.

The post can be seen at the link below. Please note that this contains images and audio recording that some people might find distressing:

How Rangnick can save £49.5m United star's career: Opinion

Manchester United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka has quickly become yesterday’s news following Diogo Dalot’s rise under new manager Ralf Rangnick.

It hasn’t helped that the German boss reportedly told club chiefs that the Englishman was not good enough to play for United.

Putting those rumours to the side, Dalot has certainly made the most of the opportunities handed to him but he was largely given those chances in the first place due to Wan-Bissaka’s absence.

The former Crystal Palace man was ruled out for quite some time due to injury or illness and so the Portuguese was called up to fill in.

The Red Devils’ need for width in recent matches has been obvious, particularly in the 4-2-2-2 formation, so Dalot’s attacking talents naturally shined.

Even Rangnick stated publicly that the former Porto man was a better attacker than defender but later praised him for improving that part of his game.

How to help

Wan-Bissaka is a former winger so it seems baffling that he is either uncomfortable or incapable of attacking with conviction on the right-wing.

Although he’s somewhat limited in that part of football, there perhaps are things Rangnick could do tell help him.

Fans only needed to be reminded of Valencia’s sudden struggles at right-back to see the similarities between the two players.

The Ecuadorian initially played brilliantly as a full-back but later seemed to run out of steam, before eventually leaving the club.

Both Valencia and Wan-Bissaka can be described as one-dimensional, which alone isn’t a bad thing, but put them under the microscope and it looks like they’re failing.

The former Wigan man was a one-trick pony of sorts but not in a bad way.

He used his sensational pace and acceleration to beat his man then delivered pinpoint crosses time and time again. It’s what made him so successful.

Valencia and Wan-Bissaka

When Valencia was turned into a full-back, he didn’t have the support he had as a winger and often had to take on two deep, defensive players thanks to United’s lack of width. He struggled.

Wan-Bissaka is similar in that sense. United can help him by ensuring whoever plays ahead of him provides width and allows him to overlap with lots of support.

Naturally that player should be Jadon Sancho but he has his own struggles and that’s a story for another day.

Wan-Bissaka isn’t necessarily bad at attacking but rather he’s one-dimensional in how he does it.

Give him the right tools and he won’t look as bad and perhaps can rediscover his offensive ways.

Let Wan-Bissaka focus on what he’s good at and he won’t disappoint when United need him to deliver a crucial cross to the team’s forwards.

How to not use Wan-Bissaka

If you isolate him and expect him to hold down the right flank on his own like Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold then he will fail you.

Wan-Bissaka should improve when he returns as United now play in a 4-3-3 formation so he will have Scott McTominay protecting him.

He’ll also have Bruno Fernandes on the right side of central midfield, and if he has Sancho or perhaps even Marcus Rashford on the right, then the added width and support should see him come good.

Now the question Rangnick can rightfully ask himself is whether it’s worth tailoring everything around Wan-Bissaka.

This is an even more important question when considering Dalot’s form and whether it might be easier to teach him to defend than to teach Wan-Bissaka how to attack.

That will be Rangnick’s decision and it will be an interesting one to see, especially given it can potentially influence the next manager’s decisions too.

United complete exciting loan deal for talented young defender

Academy graduate, Tara Bourne, has been recalled from her loan spell at Sheffield United to go on loan to Blackburn Rovers for the rest of the season.

Bourne signed her first professional contract with United in the summer before going to the Blades, who are in the Championship.

At the time Bourne said, “As a young player at the club, it’s so important to see the pathway to the first team and have those goals that you can reach. I want to thank the staff and players in both the Under-21s and first team and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

Today it was announced on United’s official website that United had recalled the defender before sending her back out on loan with another second tier side, Blackburn Rovers.

The England youth international had been apart of United’s under 21 academy side but stepped up to the first team towards the end of last season.

She made her debut in United’s 6-0 win over Burnley in the FA Cup back in April, under manager Casey Stoney.

The 18 year old made 12 appearances for Sheffield in all competitions.

Bourne will be Rovers’ third signing of the transfer window as she joins fellow defender Erica Cunningham and midfielder Luana Zajmi.

Van de Beek vs United chiefs: Why he can't be fully blamed for failure

Manchester United star Donny van de Beek likely won’t still be at the club when the January transfer window deadline passes and that hasn’t really upset fans too much.

Many want the talented Dutchman to succeed at the club but most want to see him just get game time, even if it’s somewhere else.

Lots of rumours and reports have been written on Van de Beek of late attempting to justify why he’s failed to impress at United and why he’s being sent away.

This is despite Ralf Rangnick not signing a much-needed midfielder and the switch to his 4-3-3 formation that requires depth.

Nemanja Matic, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Fred, and Scott McTominay are the German boss’ options for the engine room so it makes sense he would need a sixth in Van de Beek.

Instead, the former Ajax man has hardly been used even in Rangnick’s short reign so far and is being allowed to leave on loan.

Excuses or lies?

The excuses made are that Van de Beek has been unable to handle the physicality of the Premier League and lacks the tactical IQ to fulfil his role in United’s midfield.

It seems strange to suggest the skilled playmaker isn’t big enough given he’s larger than the likes of Fred and isn’t afraid to get stuck into a tackle either.

He was specifically put on a program to gain muscle and he succeeded in doing so. So what went wrong since?

Van de Beek frequently played in a 4-3-3 formation during his days with Ajax and so that seems to be an unfounded argument either.

The bigger question here is why was a large amount of money invested in him if the club’s chiefs feel this way about him?

Who failed Donny?

Manchester United’s recruitment team must have done a huge disservice to themselves and Van de Beek if that’s the case.

Who scouted him then suggested him then allowed the transfer to go through?

Unfortunately, United’s players or staff don’t seem to be the only ones leaking lineups or information or rumours. It appears the board and the ‘chiefs’ are doing so too.

Frankly, it’s disgraceful behaviour all around but it’s difficult to blame the players for leaking information to protect themselves when those that hire them indirectly attack them through the media.

The large majority of publications or sections of the media avoid blaming the decision-makers at the club, often choosing to focus on the manager and/or the players.

Who wanted Van de Beek?

There were suggestions very early on that Van de Beek wasn’t Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s signing and rather one the board made, in anticipation of Paul Pogba‘s departure.

Not only did the World Cup winner not leave that summer but he will likely depart for free later this year.

Pogba also suffered with numerous injuries since and yet Van de Beek hasn’t featured as his ‘replacement’.

The board made a decision thinking they were being smart by getting ahead of things but instead it’s been exposed as poor planning.

Now United could be without either midfielder and rather than needing to sign one midfielder, they might have to sign three this summer.

Van de Beek was sold a dream and although he played a small role in it turning into a nightmare, most of the blame lies firmly at the board’s doors.

Clubs locked in negotiations to bring United star to France in sensational switch

Manchester United star Phil Jones could reportedly be on his way to France if everything goes to plan.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed the latest update on the Englishman who only recently returned from a long-term layoff.

According to GFFN, L’Equipe report that Bordeaux are keen on Jones’ signature after Laurent Koscielny departed from the club.

The Ligue 1 side are hoping Otavio and Josh Maja’s upcoming potential departures will clear up enough of the wage bill to allow the transfer to happen.

Romano confirmed L’Equipe’s news but added that Eric Bailly is not leaving this month as some reports claimed.

He also confirmed it’s not just interest and talks have opened between the clubs, with Ralf Rangnick the man to make the final decision.

Rangnick was reportedly impressed by Jones’ professionalism and dedication, particularly towards getting fit again.

The former Blackburn Rovers man has struggled with injuries throughout his career and appears to have finally recovered.

Jones featured in U23s football for United to get used to being out on the grass again and it looks like it helped.

Offloading the defender in the past proved difficult because of his injuries but it seems that now since he’s proved himself, clubs are keen on him once again.

Fans will naturally encourage the departure as they hope to see Jones playing football regularly, though the added advantage is it will free up wages to be potentially spent elsewhere.

Lampard poised to make United star his first signing at Everton - The Athletic

Everton have joined the race to sign Donny van de Beek on loan from Manchester United this month.

Earlier this morning, The MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst claimed that there were three clubs vying for the 24 year old’s signature:

‘Crystal Palace, another Premier League club and an unknown overseas club are understood to have all provisionally agreed on the terms of a loan and it is now at the player’s discretion which club he chooses to join,’ he reported.

‘Any club that recruits Van de Beek would cover his weekly wage of £120,000 in full and could pay a loan fee.’

Despite rumours that Newcastle or Wolves might be in the running, it would now appear that the other Premier League club could be Everton.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein and Patrick Boyland write:

‘Everton want to sign … Van de Beek on loan before Monday’s transfer deadline.

‘The Athletic understands that the 24-year-old has been discussed with the club’s managerial targets and has emerged Everton’s top priority this window.

‘The Netherlands international was previously a target for former director of football Marcel Brands ahead of the 2021-22 season.’

Frank Lampard’s likely arrival as manager could coincide with the deal, making this window an exciting one for Toffees fans.

The ‘unknown overseas club’ in Luckhurst’s article could be Valencia, as was reported yesterday.

However, despite Luckhurst’s claim it seems unlikely that los Ché could fully finance the move and with just three days to go, there is little noise on the possibility of that deal from the Spanish end.

This probably leaves a straight fight between Palace and Everton with the player potentially being able to choose between two legendary midfield managers in Lampard or Patrick Vieira.

United open talks over world class defensive midfielder, fans will be buzzing

Manchester United are in the mix for the supremely talented French holding midfielder Aurélien Tchouameni, according to reliable sources in France.

It is a badly kept secret that United are in the market for a world class defensive midfielder.

The only specialist in that area on the club’s books is Nemanja Matic, who is 33 years old and lacking a yard of pace when compared with his heyday.

Tchouameni is already an established international for the World champions and at 22 years old is one of the most exciting young talents on the planet.

And according to the reliable RMC Sport, United are one of a number of clubs in talks with the player’s agents about a possible transfer.

‘What will be the next destination of Aurélien Tchouaméni, today focused on the Monegasque project? Hard to predict,’ the outlet says.

‘In addition to Real Madrid or Chelsea, the player’s entourage is in discussion with the biggest European leaders. Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Barcelona have recently asked for information.

‘For their part, Juventus are not left out and already wanted to bring the midfielder to Turin last summer.’

Whilst that sounds like a lot of competition – it is a lot of competition – the current financial climate might come to United’s aid as Monaco seek to create a bidding war.

‘€60, 80, 100 million … For weeks, even months, different prices have been published in the international press,’ the outlet notes.

‘[But] while many sums are leaking in the press concerning a possible transfer … no price has been set for the French international by Monaco.

‘If the French international does not leave [Monaco] this winter, a departure this summer seems inevitable.’

Spanish outlet Marca, on the other hand, claims that Monaco have set a price of €80 – €100 million.

An inevitable departure this year coupled with a high price tag will almost certainly rule out Real Madrid – who are prioritising Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland – and Barcelona, who are still trapped in a financial crisis.

Juventus are also cash strapped, although they seem too have found nearly €100 million to sign Dusan Vlahovic this week, leaving United’s Premier League rivals as the most likely competitors in the race for his signature.

With Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and West Ham’s Declan Rice also on United’s radar, their cash should ultimately be king in 2022 and should allow them to land one of these three world-class targets.

The Athletic: United have a secret reason for prolonging star player's departure

Manchester United are reportedly trying to get the most out of Jesse Lingard‘s loan move to Newcastle United and have added a survival bonus of £12 million in case Newcastle escape relegation.

The Magpies are desperate to sign some players who can help them survive in the Premier League. Their new owners have already begun flexing their financial muscles with the signing of Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and now Bruno Guimaraes.

Lingard has a successful loan spell last January at West Ham and almost propelled them to a Champions League spot.

It is believed that controlling shareholder Joel Glazer refused to loan the player to West Ham or Tottenham because they are considered rivals for Champions League slots.

This seemed to leave the Magpies in pole position but now Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic claims that the Red Devils are afraid of Newcastle’s future dominance in England after acquiring new owners.

The Saudi takeover automatically makes Newcastle the richest club in the world and Whitwell’s sources say that the big clubs would prefer to see them relegated, as this would postpone their inevitable ascension to the Premier League’s elite.

Lingard is reportedly unhappy about the situation, as he was promised a move this month.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick is also said to have agreed to sanction a deal for the 29 year old.

With the 29-year-old’s contract expiring in the summer, United are clearly trying to maximise the financial benefit out of his loan move.

Whitwell nicely sums it up at the end:

‘Whatever happens, it is another unedifying episode in the modern story of Manchester United.’

Many argue that having been at the club and a loyal servant since the age of seven, it is unfair to condemn Lingard to a whole season of inactivity just in order to scupper the chances of other Premier League clubs.

How to get Sancho back to being a world-beater at Man United: Opinion

Manchester United have a £76.5m dilemma on their hands in Jadon Sancho that clearly needs solving.

The sensational Englishman hasn’t lived up to his exploits in the Bundesliga but there’s no real worry he won’t turn around his fortunes.

In fairness to Sancho, he’s arrived at a horribly unstable time in regards to United’s own troubles and so not much could have been expected from him.

Some of the club’s more experienced or settled players have been just as poor or haven’t looked as good as they normally would.

Moving on, there were a lot of problems Sancho was meant to solve for the Red Devils and so getting him back to his best has to be a priority, not just for his sake but for the club’s too.

Here’s how Manchester United can help him improve:

Play in one position, preferably

Sancho needs to settle and it doesn’t help if he’s used in various roles at this point of his career.

Yes he’s incredibly versatile and that can and should be a big advantage but it’s one that should only be exploited when he’s more confident.

United brought him in as a right-winger so he should be used in that position and preferably only in that position for the near future.

Mason Greenwood has tended to play in that role but it could be argued it’s not to his advantage, with fans wanting to see him play as a striker more.

Encourage sports psychologist sessions

Ralf Rangnick brought in some of his own staff with him to the Red Devils and one of those was a sports psychologist, Sascha Lense.

The German boss insisted at the time it was an absolutely logical decision to make and fans certainly agreed.

If Sancho isn’t already speaking to Lense then he should be encouraged to do so as he’s dealing with a lot of pressure at the moment.

Not only is the young winger adapting to a new league and bigger expectations, but his price tag will weigh heavy on his mind.

Sancho needs to get used to the Premier League but he also needs to get used to the mental toughness needed to shine on this stressful stage.

Take him out of the limelight

Having said that, pressure can be relieved by taking Sancho out of the limelight; let fans or rivals almost forget about his existence.

There are enough reputable stars at Manchester United who can shoulder the pressures of the club instead, use them in big-game moments.

Sancho should be protected, used as a substitute that is introduced in low-pressure situations such as when a game is already won or not much is on the line.

Unfortunately that type of scenario tends to be a luxury but Rangnick is experienced enough to know when. Just ask Marcus Rashford.

Rashford benefitted from taking a rest and being used as a substitute instead and now he looks ready for action again.

Support Sancho with lots of movement

It’s no good to throw him into the deep end on the right-wing with little to no support.

Sancho won’t be confident enough to take on multiple players and be a regular source of attacking for his teammates.

It’s important to ensure he’s surrounded by players who support him and provide him with options so he doesn’t have to doubt his decision-making or become overwhelmed.

Sancho simply cannot be the single creative burden in the team and others must stand up to take that pressure off him.

Rangnick’s 4-3-3 should see more creativity come from his midfielders, with Bruno Fernandes already getting better himself.

With the return of Paul Pogba, hopefully Sancho will have even better support and can feel more at ease.

Diogo Dalot’s rise at right-back will help the former Borussia Dortmund man more too as his overlapping runs will provide his teammate with exactly what he needs to shine once again.

To conclude

Manchester United fans need to continue to remain patient but more can be done to protect Sancho in order to provide him with the platform to perform.

When a player lacks confidence or is out of form it can help to keep things simple rather than complicate matters.

An out-of-form player might get desperate, thinking he needs to take on ten players and score a hat-trick and grab a handful of assists or else he’ll be dropped again and never get another chance to prove his worth.

Sancho has to be given time and to keep things simple. Play the easy pass, show for the ball, use your teammates.

When he gains confidence from doing the simple things, he’ll remember who he is again and then he can remind the world of that too.

How United can use Ronaldo to guarantee titles: Opinion

Signing Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer of 2021 was a dream come true for almost all Manchester United fans.

Those who were unsure of what he’ll provide pushed the negative thoughts to the back of their minds to celebrate the return of a club legend.

United finished second last season. Ronaldo was meant to be the difference between second and first.

So why is it that even after adding Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, the team have gone backward, crashing down back to a scary reality?

It’s a question most supporters want answers for but the focus here will only be on Ronaldo and what he has to offer.

Ronaldo: The greatest goalscorer

It’s obvious the prolific Portuguese is no longer the player he once was but there could still be a way to extract the most out of him.

What Ronaldo does best is goalscoring and he’s still excellent at it and at coming up big when a club is in their lowest moments, even this season.

Karim Benzema recently denied he was his former teammate’s deputy, instead seemingly suggesting he facilitated the United star.

The Frenchman insisted he did this because Ronaldo was the greater goalscorer and not because it had anything to do with egos or personalities.

Benzema made a calculated decision and opted to ensure he played his role in ensuring his former colleague maximised the potential to score and make a difference.

Essentially this is what the Red Devils must do. When Ronaldo plays for a team, he tends to hoover up all the goals scored by that club, with those around him not necessarily playing worse but certainly scoring less.

However, that doesn’t make him bad or evil or not a team player. Rather it’s just a way of increasing a team’s chances to win matches.

If you want to bet your money on someone scoring, it’s Ronaldo.

If Madrid facilitated everything about their game towards Benzema, they might not have won as many trophies, or he might not have scored as many goals as the former Sporting Lisbon man.

Support Ronaldo, increase your odds of winning

Football’s a game of odds and having Ronaldo on your team, and providing him the best platform to perform, meant you’re increasing your odds more than you dreamed.

Manchester United could do the same. The sensational attacker still has lots left in the tank.

If United create a system that caters to Ronaldo as the ultimate finisher, then both parties will benefit tremendously.

There’s no need to ask him to run 50km a match or to ask him to become a provider or require him to drop deep to not be isolated from his teammates.

Simply put, put the chances on a plate for Ronaldo and he will deliver, and the Red Devils have to do that if they wish to extract the most from him.

It essentially means Ralf Rangnick has to find a way to get the rest of the players to be the ultimate creators but if done then the 36-year-old will net just as often as he did with Madrid.

Juventus never fully facilitated Ronaldo and so he and they failed in their ultimate goal.

United need to learn from that mistake and ensure the rest of the team picks up the slack, both defensively and creatively.

It might mean Bruno Fernandes or Marcus Rashford won’t score as much but it will mean Ronaldo will score double whatever they would have.

When to doubt Ronaldo

When the experienced forward starts to lose his goalscoring instinct then the Red Devils can start to consider tweaking his role or featuring him less.

Ryan Giggs in his later years lost what made him so great, his pace and dribbling, and so was turned into a playmaker of sorts, protected by harder-working midfielders around him.

It allowed the Welshman to deliver again at a high level before his influence eventually dropped off again and he retired aged 40.

If Ronaldo, and United, want him to last the same way, then he has to be facilitated until he’s not worth being facilitated for but until now, that moment hasn’t come.

£71m United star in ongoing talks with Euro giants, 'excited' to go - reports

Marcus Rashford has been lined up as Kylian Mbappé’s replacement at Paris Saint-Germain and has already been in talks with the French side, according to reports.

The academy graduate has not had the best of seasons and has lost his place in the starting XI to Anthony Elanga since the arrival of interim manager, Ralf Rangnick.

But it was during last summer, before Rangnick’s arrival, that the England man is reported to have opened talks about a possible move to the French giants.

‘As reported by Fabrice Hawkins, Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford was in contact with PSG last summer with a view to the possible departure of Kylian Mbappé from the Ligue 1 club,’ Get French Football News reports.

‘Having impressed against PSG in the past, the 24-year-old was excited by the idea of joining Paris, reports Hawkins, with a link between the two parties remaining with the next summer window in mind.

‘Mbappé has been repeatedly linked with Real Madrid but is yet to reveal a final decision on his future with his contract up in the summer.’

Whilst a couple of years ago it might have seemed unthinkable that Rashford would want to leave, his poor form and body language this season have given rise to much speculation and the PSG links must be seen as credible.

Rumours are growing that a transfer could take place this summer.

The Express reports that ‘according to a host of journalists including Canal’s Hadrien Grenier, who cites the confirmation of fellow transfer specialist Abdellah Boulma, PSG are in contact with Rashford over a summer move.

‘Furthermore, the 24-year-old is being “seduced” by PSG and “likes the idea” of heading to the Parc des Princes, which currently boasts megastars like Lionel Messi and Neymar.’

Rashford’s United deal ends in June 2023 although the club has an option of a further year. His transfer value according to Transfermarkt.com is €85 million (around £71m).

With an unhappy and inconsistent player on their books, United might be very tempted to cash in should an offer in that region come along this summer.

PSG are also reported to be renewing their efforts to sign Paul Pogba this summer, who will be a free agent when his United contract expires in June.

United's youngsters advance in cup despite poor result - match report

After previously being postponed twice, Manchester United’s u18s finally played their final group stage match of the Premier League Cup away to West Bromwich Albion in windy conditions.

The match saw both sides have a slow start, settling into the match with little action in the opening stages.

The first big moment came in the 19th minute when Ruben Curley blocked a clearance and was chasing the loose ball when the West Brom keeper charged out of his box and blocked the ball with his hands.

Despite denying a big opportunity, the ref chose to show yellow instead of red.

Ethan Ennis tested the keeper in the 27th minute with a quick snap shot from 18 yards out but it was routinely saved.

The first half continued on as a scrappy affair with little quality on show from either side and it went into the break 0-0.

The second half kicked off in much the same fashion and both sides struggled to put together attacks.

A meaty challenge in the midfield from Dan Gore which was high and over the ball was lucky to see the captain stay on the pitch in the 64th minute.

The resulting free kick was put into the area and United were unable to clear leading to West Brom driving it low into the net to take the lead.

The introduction of Alejandro Garnacho injected some quality as he immediately went on a driving run and flashed a low driven shot just wide of the post.

With United pushing for an equaliser, West Brom hit on the counter to double their lead. A looping ball over the backline line found Reyes Cleary running in behind and he rifled it past Tom Wooster, giving him no chance to stop.

A giveaway at the back opened a chance for West Brom to make it three shortly after but a strong right hand from Wooster was there to deny.

A last second attempt from Kobbie Mainoo after a driving run was scuffed wide, summing up United’s performance in attack.

The final 2-0 loss was of no consequence though, as United still advance in first place due to goal difference.

United: Wooster, Lawrence (Forson 60), Fredricson, Aljofree, Murray, Curley (Jackson 46), Mainoo, Gore, Mather, Ennis (Garnacho 68), Norkett

Unused subs: Hanbury

United make two more last minute signings on an incredibly exciting deadline day

Manchester United announced two more signings on deadline day of the January transfer window as Jade Moore and Signe Bruun joined the club.

Marc Skinner has worked with Moore before, she played under him at Birmingham City, and it was he who signed her at Orlando Pride.

The 31 year old has 50 caps for England but has suffered with injuries in recent years – a knee injury ruled her out of the NWSL’s regular season last year.

Speaking on her arrival to the club, Moore said “I’m delighted to be here at a club like Manchester United; it’s a proud moment after a difficult period for me.”

“It’s great to be back in this league too, I have a lot of experience in the WSL, having played in it for around a decade, and I think I can bring some of that to this team.”

Skinner touched on working with Moore in the past, saying “Jade is a brilliant midfielder, I’ve obviously worked with her in previous roles at Birmingham and Orlando and I know the real qualities she can bring to the squad. She is an intelligent player with a great football mind, who has the ability to read and control games.”

Moore added, “I’m also looking forward to working under Marc again and getting to know my new team-mates, the group here is thriving and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

“For me, this was the right move in my career at this time and I’m going to work as hard as possible to get fit and be in contention.”

Meanwhile, Bruun joins the Reds from Olympique Lyonnais on loan until the end of the season.

The 23 year old striker has 19 caps for Denmark and was voted Denmark’s player of the year.

On her international debut she entered play two minutes into stoppage time and scored her first goal two minutes later.

Speaking about the move she said, “It’s amazing to be here, I’m really happy to be joining Manchester United. It is a big club with huge history, I have followed the women’s project for a while and have seen the progression of the team, and I think this move was a perfect match for me.”

Skinner added, “Signe’s talent speaks for itself but her ability to find the narrowest of spaces in the box and be so deadly in front of goal is something that we’re really excited to see.”

It’s been a busy deadline day for the Reds, with three new additions to the side.

Man United make huge U-turn which might upset fans - report

Manchester United are considering keeping Ralf Rangnick in charge as permanent manager next season.

According to The Sun, the club are impressed by the German’s record since taking over as interim.

Losing just one of ten games, Rangnick has definitely stabilised United’s defence. United conceded seven goals in those games compared to 22 in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s last ten matches in charge.

Rangnick has constantly mentioned the need for his side to ‘control’ games, and the idea is slowly being implemented on the pitch.

However, United will be hoping not to repeat the same mistake they made with Solskjaer.

The Norwegian was appointed permanent manager after a series of good results.

Rangnick has shown that his expertise lies more off the pitch as a Sporting Director. His most notable achievements are related to scouting, and building a good structure for a football club.

He was instrumental in the success of the Red Bull project.

The Athletic claims that Man United have made a shortlist of managers including Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag, Luis Enrique and Julen Lopetegui to take over as permanent boss next summer.

It could be a smarter decision to appoint an established coach and move Rangnick upstairs to manage transfers and provide valuable consultancy.

United sign experienced Irish international in a move that has delighted fans

Manchester United Women have signed Irish defender Diane Caldwell for the rest of the 2021/22 season.

The 33 year old spent 2021 playing in the NWSL at North Carolina Courage but has earned 84 caps for Ireland.

Caldwell played in Norway for several years at Avaldsnes IL, who play in the Toppserien, the first tier of Norwegian women’s football.

Here she helped her side secure Champions League football in her final year at the club.

She then went on to play in Germany at SC Sand, making 93 appearances for the Bundesliga side.

Speaking of the new addition to his squad, Marc Skinner said “Diane joins us as an experienced international defender who will really add to our back line during this second half of the season.”

“She has great composure and versality, and I have no doubt that she will be a fantastic asset to the team during her time here.”

Picked up on a free transfer, despite the short-term nature of the contract there could be a bright future ahead for Caldwell at United.

Skinner believes she will gel well with the rest of the team adding, “Diane is also a great character, I always talk about having the right people in our environment, and she is the ultimate professional who possesses those important traits and leadership skills which will help continue to develop the incredible team spirit within this group.”

Caldwell, a lifelong United fan says it’s the dream move for her, “Today is one of the most special moments in my life so far. As a lifelong United fan, it’s a dream to sign for the club and it’s a big moment for me and my family.”

“I’m so grateful to be here and will wear the badge with so much pride. The team are in great form, playing attractive football, and Marc is doing a fantastic job; I just can’t wait to meet everyone and get straight down to business on the pitch.”

United have been looking to strengthen in defence during this transfer window, especially after Millie Turner’s season was thrown into doubt after concerns about an artery in her neck ruled her out of the game at the weekend.

Diane may get a chance to make her debut as early as this weekend when United travel to Bridgwater United in the FA Cup.

United fans told what to expect with undecided transfer

Manchester United fans have been told exactly what has happened in regards to the deal that almost saw Jesse Lingard move to Newcastle.

Ralf Rangnick has been trying to ensure he has enough options in his squad whilst getting rid of anyone who wants to leave.

According to ESPN, Lingard isn’t pleased with the way he’s been handled by United after negotiations with Newcastle over a loan move fell apart.

It’s understood the Englishman wanted to move to St James’ Park after being disappointed by rejected approaches from Tottenham and West Ham.

Newcastle are said to have been willing to cover Lingard’s wages as well as a £2.5m loan fee and a further £12m bonus if they survive this season.

The versatile attacker’s camp are worried The Magpies might end their interest in him soon, especially since the Red Devils turned down a £6m loan fee recently.

Lingard’s representatives are beginning to suspect that he’s being punished for refusing to sign a new deal and opting to leave for free this summer.

ESPN claim their sources explained that the academy graduate’s desire to leave, both this month and in the summer, is down to a need for regular minutes.

Lingard is said to be disappointed by the way he’s been treated after spending more than 20 years at United, with both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Rangnick falsely promising him more game time.

The 29-year-old is also upset by a video that’s circulating online in which the German boss dismissively claims the player will leave in the summer.

Rangnick had signed off on Lingard’s departure on Tuesday but the board still later blocked a move to Newcastle until demands were met.

Manchester United are said to feel a Premier League survival bonus is fair given how much help Newcastle need and what survival will mean for them financially.

ESPN’s sources claim the loan move isn’t dead yet and the decision lies with the interested party if they want to sign him.

The video that upset Lingard:

The tweet below explains why United are being tough with Newcastle, stating Lingard’s indecision cost him.

It also insists the club see him as a £50m player and so feel the numbers mentioned are valid, as well as the fact they don’t want to sell him to Newcastle.
