How Rangnick's appointment could endanger United superstar's future

Manchester United’s new interim coach Ralf Rangnick could change Cristiano Ronaldo’s role in the team.

The German is known for his high intensity ‘heavy metal’ football, and many believe Ronaldo’s game time could be limited as a result.

Also known as the godfather of the gegenpress, Rangnick expects his side to press as a unit starting from the front.

As discussed in our previous article earlier this week, this might prove a bit too much for Ronaldo, who isn’t the best in terms of pressing.

At 36, the Portuguese has remodelled his game to complement his age.

He is not the same explosive winger who could beat a man with his burst of pace.

He has adapted to the demands of the modern game and can now be classed as a ‘goal poacher’. One of his biggest strengths is his movement in and around the box and his ability to finish.

ESPN’s Mark Ogden explains this dilemma: “Unless Rangnick changes his entire approach to the game, United’s tactics and formation under the new boss will be very similar to those deployed by caretaker-manager Michael Carrick against Chelsea.”

“They will be more solid in midfield, and the forwards will be expected to press high with energy and be the first line of defence at all times.”

Ronaldo has been sensational for United this season and has single-handedly won multiple games. Scoring 10 goals in 15 appearances for the club, the 36 year old has proven that he is still one of the best players in the world.

It will be fascinating to see if Rangnick will compromise on his philosophy to accommodate Ronaldo in the team.

Wildcard: United board could upset fans with this surprise managerial appointment

Roberto Mancini is in contention to take over as Manchester United’s long term manager next season.

According to James Ducker of The Telegraph, the Italian is on United’s shortlist of possible managerial targets.

It will mostly depend upon his situation with the Italian National team, who have yet to play the FIFA World Cup playoffs in March.

The 57 year old is currently on a lucrative contract until 2026, but a move back to the Premier League might turn his head.

Mancini would undoubtedly be a wildcard appointment by United.

The Italian has a profound history with Manchester City, winning them their first-ever Premier League title back in 2012.

However, it is his stint with Italy that is even more impressive.

After failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, Mancini remodelled Italy’s tactics and guided them to the Euro 2020 title.

He brought through some talented youngsters like Federico Chiesa, Manuel Locatelli and Nicolo Barella, who formed the crux of the team.

Mancini has proven himself on the highest stage and should be considered one of the candidates for the United job.

Ducker mentions other names like Erik ten Hag, Mauricio Pochettino and Brendan Rodgers, who all have unique traits and would bring something different to the club.

United announced the appointment of Ralf Rangnick yesterday, who is set to take over as interim manager until the end of the season with a further two years in consultancy.

The German will play a critical role in determining United’s next permanent manager.

Rangnick eyes up exciting first Man United signing: report

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick is reportedly considering bringing in RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara in the winter transfer window.

The interim manager appears to already be on the lookout for ways to improve the current crop of players.

According to The Times, Rangnick is weighing up the option to sign Haidara, with United open to giving him a budget for the January transfer window.

It’s understood the young midfielder has a £33m release clause and so it could be relatively easy to prize him away from RB Leipzig.

Many fans felt Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s failure to bring in a central midfielder in the summer proved costly and potentially could have been a part of his downfall.

United have struggled to keep clean-sheets this season despite having a back four made up of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, and Luke Shaw.

Not to mention that defence was often protected by a midfield partnership of Fred and Scott McTominay.

Somehow the Red Devils were consistently sliced through easily, regardless of their opponents, and ultimately it meant Solskjaer lost his job.

Rangnick will hope his own tactics, helped by Haidara’s potential arrival, will shore up Old Trafford and keep opponents out more consistently.

There is an argument to be made that none of Manchester United’s current midfielders are natural defensive midfielders other than Nemanja Matic.

Both McTominay and Fred seem to excel when given box to box roles, while Donny van de Beek is naturally more impressive further forward.

Haidara is said to be capable of sitting in midfield and so that should provide more solidity in United’s starting XI.

Big blow for Ralf Rangnick at Man United before he's even started

Manchester United’s new boss Ralf Rangnick will unfortunately be without his right-hand man Lars Kornetka, who is remaining in Russia.

The news was confirmed by Lokomotiv Moscow’s official Twitter account and deals United a small blow in their bid to turn things around.

Kornetka has more or less followed Rangnick around the globe, with the pair working together consistently since 2007.

Kornetka was Hoffenheim’s video analyst when Rangnick was the manager in the German club and the duo have been together since.

The latter would then manage Schalke and the former maintained his job title as video analyst, though in new surroundings of course.

They would then part ways, with Kornetka enjoying spells with Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen as a video analyst and assistant manager respectively.

Rangnick spent that time alone with RB Leipzig, though he would later bring in his former colleague to work as a video analyst and assistant manager at different spells.

The pair would enjoy another break from each other before teaming up against with Lokomotiv Moscow, though United have now broken them up again.

It’s clear to see Rangnick and Kornetka have often worked together to great success and many were expecting he would be the man to follow the new interim manager.

However, the latter took the former’s old job and now the Red Devils staff will have a lot to learn from the German boss.

It’s been said Rangnick will bring in a small group of his staff but Kornetka is clearly not one of them, and the hope is the rest are just as capable.

The chaos surrounding United's final Champions League group game

Manchester United’s final Champions League group stage encounter with BSC Young Boys may have to be switched to a neutral venue.

Switzerland have put in place new restrictions on UK arrivals as the new Omicron variant of Covid-19 is threatening to cause major issues worldwide.

This would mean any arrivals would be required to provide a negative Covid test and quarantine for 10 days, whether they’re vaccinated or not.

Young Boys may seek an exemption, but it is unclear at this stage whether they would be granted one or not.

Uefa’s Champions League regulations state:

“If restrictions imposed by the national/local authorities of the visiting club’s country apply to the visiting club’s travel to play the match or its return home after the match, the home club must propose a suitable alternative venue … which may be in a neutral country (within the territory of a Uefa member association) that would allow the match to take place and would not cause the visiting club any restrictions in either travel direction.”

“If the home club fails to propose such suitable alternative venue within the aforementioned deadline, the Uefa administration will take a final decision on the match venue and/or match date.”

“In any case, the Uefa administration may reschedule matches if this ensures a match is played and allows the group stage to be completed accordingly.”

“All group stage matches must be finished by December 31, 2021.”

This could mean incoming interim boss, Ralf Rangnick may have to wait for his first taste of Champions League football under the Old Trafford lights until the knockout rounds next year.

It would also mean chaos for fans who have bought tickets and made travel arrangements with the game just over a week away.

United will want to exact revenge on their Swiss opponents for the 2-1 loss they suffered in September and finish the group stages on a high.

BBC confirm Ralf Rangnick won't be in charge of United vs Arsenal

Manchester United’s new interim boss Ralf Rangnick won’t make it in time to be in charge for the clash against Arsenal.

United take on the Gunners at Old Trafford on Thursday night and it looks as though they’ll have to do so without their new German manager.

It’s safe to say it’s a blow to fans who had hoped he would be able to be in the dugout in time to hopefully grab a crucial win over Mikel Arteta’s men.

The hope is that despite visa and Covid issues, Rangnick will still be influential on the training ground and decision-making.

Of course there are no guarantees that will be the case as there would be some technicalities that would need to be resolved first.

Nonetheless, the silver lining in it all is that Rangnick would subsequently have an easier start to his reign and a fixture list that should favour him.

Arsenal have risen up the ranks since their own mini poor start to the season and are now ahead of United and in good form.

There is a five-point gap between the two sides so a win is desperately needed and if the Red Devils can survive one more difficult match, they can give Rangnick a platform to build on.

The bad news is that even with a favourable fixture list, the former RB Leipzig man won’t have too much time on the training ground due to the number of games being played over the next month or so.

Manchester United will be entering the congested winter period and so it’s possible Rangnick won’t be able to be influential, on the training ground at least, until January when there’s a break in play.

Nonetheless, fans are excited to see what the second half of the season holds for them and wish to forget the first half ever even happened.

Angry Ronaldo says Ballon d’Or organiser ‘lied’ over Messi obsession

Last night Lionel Messi claimed his seventh Ballon d’Or as he pipped Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho to the award.

While many felt Bayern Munich’s Lewandowski deserved one for 2020, when the award was cancelled, he also had a good shout to be this year’s winner having arguably put together a much stronger run in 2021 than Messi.

However, the controversial winner wasn’t the only controversy of the night, as Cristiano Ronaldo’s war of words with France Football editor, Pascal Ferre was a major talking point.

Ferre told the New York Times “Ronaldo has only one ambition, and that is to retire with more Ballon d’Or’s than Messi, and I know that because he has told me.”

Ronaldo took umbrage with this quote, later taking to Instagram to debunk a lot of what was said:

“Pascal Ferre lied, he used my name to promote himself and to promote the publication he works for.”

“It is unacceptable that the person responsible for awarding such a prestigious prize could lie in this way, in absolute disrespect for someone who has always respected France Football and the Ballon d’Or.”

“And he lied again today, justifying my absence from the Gala with an alleged quarantine that has no reason to exist.”

“The biggest ambition of my career is to win national and international titles for the clubs I represent and for the national team in my country.”

“The biggest ambition of my career is to be a good example for all those who are or want to be professional footballers.”

The Ballon d’Or’s standing within the game has been decreasing for a number of years now, with many choosing not to take the award seriously. This could be the final nail in the coffin for the once coveted prize.

Rangnick has four outstanding options as Glazers make January transfer budget decision

Manchester United’s incoming interim manager Ralf Rangnick will be given a transfer budget in January, according to a new report.

Having spent €140 million (£118m) on Cristiano Ronaldo (€15m), Jadon Sancho (€85m) and Raphael Varane (€40m) in the summer, the board had reportedly been unwilling to make funds available for the winter window.

However, according to The Express, the appointment of interim manager Ralf Rangnick, coupled with the obvious need for midfield reinforcements, has led to a change of heart from the controlling shareholders, the Glazer family.

‘Express Sport understands that the Glazer family have decided that funds will be made available for Rangnick,’ the outlet claims.

‘United have looked a little short of quality this term, particularly in central midfield.’

The budget is unlikely to extend to the £100 million required for previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top target, West Ham’s Declan Rice, but there are plenty of cheaper options who could provide an upgrade in the defensive midfield area.

Reports have started to circulate in the last 24 hours about a player Rangnick signed for RB Leipzig, Amadou Haidara, who has a €33 million release clause, but there are plenty of other potential bargains as well.

As reported here yesterday, the likes of Denis Zakaria and Marcelo Brozovic are entering the last six months of their respective contracts at Borussia Monchengladbach and Inter Milan, respectively.

This could mean that they could be signed for a reduced fee rather than being allowed to leave for nothing at the end of the season.

Another possibility, albeit perhaps a little harder to pull off, would be Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, who has been rumoured to be close to an exit from the Camp Nou.

Although Xavi has quashed claims that the Dutchman might leave, the fact is that the Blaugrana are in a terrible financial situation and with plenty of cover in midfield, they may be willing to part ways with him.

With the unfortunate medical condition affecting Sergio Aguero, the priority for Barcelona must surely be to raise funds for a striker. What kind of figure they might be willing to accept for the 24-year-old, valued by transfermarkt.com at €90 million, remains to be seen.

Whatever the case, the news that there will be funds available to strengthen will be celebrated by United fans and by Rangnick himself, who will not have long to wait to find what many consider to be the final piece of the jigsaw.

BBC reveals identity of secret voice speaking to Fletcher vs Chelsea

Michael Carrick has denied that Ralf Rangnick influenced his decision-making during the Premier League fixture vs. Chelsea.

The caretaker manager recently took part in his first Premier League fixture in a crucial run-in against the current league leaders.

His side was able to grab a point in a crucial fixture after United’s dip in form.

However, this match came with a tactical switch from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s usual 4-2-3-1 attacking formation.

The team itself was very defensive, with three defensive midfielders in operation. In front of the midfield three was Fernandes, operating as a false nine, with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford to either side of him.

The team as a unit was pressing and the exclusion of Cristiano Ronaldo from the starting eleven confirmed there would be a tactical switch.

Many fans believed that Ralf Rangnick had a major influence on the team sheet and the tactics because it was a pressing side.

However, as reported here earlier today, the German was not in fact behind the team selection or the strategy employed.

The squad that faced Chelsea relied on counter-attacks, which turned out to be influential as Jadon Sancho secured his first Premier League goal of the season.

Fans also spotted an earpiece that Darren Fletcher was using to communicate through and many people believed he was on the phone to the incoming manager.

But according to the BBC, this was not the case as Carrick said himself in the post-match interviews.

Sources informed the outlet that Fletcher was in fact speaking to data analysts who were located at the back of the stands.

This is something you typically see in football but it has been a long time since an earpiece has been spotted at Old Trafford.

It wasn’t Rangnick in the end but it was nice to see a refreshed United team with a different formation and tactics that made sure the Red Devils picked up their first point of the month in the league.

United fans will be looking forward to a new-look team in the upcoming months under the incoming interim manager and there could even hopefully be some new players in the upcoming January transfer window.

How Ralf Rangnick could re-invent struggling United star's crucial role

The appointment of Ralf Rangnick may be the key to improving Bruno Fernandes’ form after a disappointing spell in recent months.

The Portuguese magnifico has been one of the shining stars in recent years but also the player the team tend to rely on the most.

However, his output has been below par in recent months and the team as a unit has suffered from his lack of goal involvements.

Results in the league have been catastrophic which ultimately led to the manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, being sacked.

Man United recently travelled to Stamford Bridge to face top of the league Chelsea and were able to come back with a point.

The playmaker was given the role of a false nine but did not seem to respond well to the challenge.

However, Fernandes currently tops the charts for assists in the Champions League.

An article from The Independent, highlights the dip in form from the 28-year-old but also mentions how things could change completely now that Ralf Rangnick has been confirmed as interim manager.

Reporter Miguel Delaney points out that Fernandes will have an entirely different role and could be slotted into a deeper position, which some fans argue is where he best performs.

During matches under previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Bruno was used as a free-roaming playmaker but this is set to change as a new system is introduced in the upcoming months.

Many fans believe that Rangnick will come to United and use a pressing formation such as the standard 4-2-2-2 setup which he commonly uses or a 4-3-3.

The Portuguese international made his name at Sporting Lisbon as a number eight – the number he has tattooed on his arm – and so is well capable of performing in a midfield three.

This could be seen as a turning point in the player’s form and we could be seeing an entirely new Fernandes under the new manager.

It is clear to see that the exceptional form of the Portuguese midfielder was unsustainable but unfortunately the dip from those high standards percolated through to the form of the entire side.

Under the new German manager, he will have a ‘fixed’ role in the midfield and most likely will not have the license to free-roam.

Fans will hope that the deeper role and the change in coaching staff can reignite his best form for the club.

The one Man United star Rangnick will completely transform into a world-class talent

New interim Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick will clearly be delighted to work with Jadon Sancho, after comments he made in the past reemerged.

The German manager has an eye for talent but saw something special in the young Englishman, suggesting he was unique.

With Sancho struggling to make an impact up until Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s departure, it’s now expected he will flourish.

The former Borussia Dortmund man still has plenty of time to reignite his career after what has been a poor start to his time at Old Trafford.

Unfortunately Manchester United have been going through a difficult patch themselves and so it’s near impossible for any player to look good.

Even Cristiano Ronaldo, the man who has scored many match-winning goals so far, has been criticised and even labelled as a ‘problem’.

Sancho had to adapt to a new country, new league, and a new club, which is obviously not easy, let alone one that was in such turmoil.

If Rangnick is such a fan of the versatile attacker, then it should bode well for him in the long-term and should see him return to form.

Sancho was simply sensational in Germany and his numbers were ridiculous as he managed to get double digits in both goals and assists.

His ability to play on either wing and as a number 10 if needed means he can be useful in many different ways.

Rangnick has plenty of options in the attacking positions so it will be interesting to see who he favours and what combinations of players he will use too.

These fantastic four free agents could transform Rangnick's United

Manchester United will be looking to revamp their squad at the end of the season with the arrival of Ralph Rangnick.

The 63 year old is expected to implement his philosophy within the team and would reportedly have a big say on the appointment of the new permanent manager.

In his interview with the Coach’s Voice, Rangnick emphasized having a definite style of play and finding suitable players compatible with that system.

“We try to find the best possible people for each job, guaranteeing competence across the club.”

“It is key to have a competent and excellently trained staff in every position and to challenge them every day to make themselves and the club better.”

To get the best out of Rangnick’s system, United must make changes come the summer transfer window.

Athletic’s recent article mentions a few players available for free at the end of the season.

Frank Kessie

The AC Milan midfielder has reportedly rejected a new contract proposal and will leave for free next summer. The 24 year old would be an ideal fit in Rangnick’s pressing system.

He is an energetic and tenacious player who can provide a unique dynamic to the side.

With the possible departure of Paul Pogba, Kessie could be just the player United need to strengthen the midfield.

Marcelo Brozovic

One of the best defensive midfielders across Europe, Brozovic would be the ideal signing for United.

He would fit perfectly at the base of United’s midfield – a position that was neglected by the club.

Brozovic’s composure and quality on the ball would significantly improve United’s overall play across the field.

However, it will be a difficult deal to pull off as Inter might tempt the Croatian to sign an extension as per Italian reports.

Denis Zakaria

Another one of United’s midfield targets, Zakaria, would be a perfect signing for the club.

Previous reports state that United have made contact with his agent.

The 24 year old would comfortably slot into the number six role, giving the team much needed defensive structure.

He is good on the ball and has the vision to break opposition lines from deep.

The deal will also be complex to pull off, as United face heavy competition from top teams around Europe.

Noussair Mazraoui

A left-field signing for the Red Devils would be Ajax’s Noussair Mazraoui. The Dutchman has been a regular in the side since 2017-18 and in a vital cog in Erik ten Hag’s team.

He could offer good competition to Aaron Wan Bissaka.

Mazraoui would thrive under Rangnick’s system as it allows full-backs to push high up the pitch to provide width.

Manchester City is said to be one of the clubs interested in his signature.

Five sensational statistics that will excite United fans with Rangnick's appointment

Manchester United fans have been delighted with Ralf Rangnick’s recent appointment and there appear to be many reasons to justify it.

The statistics below show supporters just what kind of change they could expect from the German boss who is known for his particular style of play.

The first statistic shows just how poorly United have been this season, particularly in a defensive sense.

Even if Rangnick doesn’t make them league leaders in every stat, fans can at least expect improvements in that department.

The second statistic is likely to excite fans given how the former RB Leipzig’s record against Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has largely come from teams in which the new United manager was the underdog.

If Rangnick can ensure his Red Devils beat their rivals regularly then it’s safe to say he will quickly be loved.

Fans have often recognised the issues that are present in midfield and how the team overall appears to press in a disjointed manner.

The third statistic suggests it’s something Rangnick can fix at Manchester United and hopefully it can be done so quickly.

Quick transitions are a part of United’s history and so the fourth statistic bodes well for fans who hope to see that side of the game flourish again.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s side were sometimes set up for the counter-attack but seemed to lose their ability to do it effectively towards the end of his tenure.

Lastly, clean-sheets would be a welcome change, with the Red Devils struggling to stop the leak at Old Trafford all season long.

German don: Man United fans and greats react to Rangnick appointment

Manchester United have officially confirmed and announced Ralf Rangnick’s arrival as interim manager, much to the delight of fans.

The German manager will stay until June in his role and then will spend a subsequent two years in an advisory role to sort out the club’s structure.

According to the club’s official website, John Murtough said: “Ralf is one of the most respected coaches and innovators in European football. He was our number one candidate for interim manager, reflecting the invaluable leadership and technical skills he will bring from almost four decades of experience in management and coaching.

“Everyone at the club is looking forward to working with him during the season ahead, and then for a further two years in his advisory role.”

Rangnick also said: “I am excited to be joining Manchester United and focused on making this a successful season for the club.

“The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience. All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfil their potential, both individually and, most importantly, as a team.

“Beyond that, I look forward to supporting the club’s longer-term goals on a consultancy basis.”

It’s understood Rangnick’s staff will look like:

Manchester United fans reacted positively to the news:

United greats had this to say too:

Rangnick is clearly the popular choice by supporters who understand the difficulty in hiring a permanent manager mid-season.

Typically it’s something that can only be done if the managerial targets aren’t tied up to a club, like with Zinedine Zidane.

Unfortunately the French manager had no interest in the Premier League and appears to be waiting out for the PSG or France international jobs.

Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag, the two managers said to be on United’s radars, could only be convinced to part ways from their current projects in the summer.

With Rangnick playing a role in deciding the next United manager, it will be interesting to see which manager he favours.

Fans will likely be pleased with either long-term appointment, but there is a feeling he would lean more to Ten Hag given their similarities in styles of play.

'United are a cup team': Rangnick warned over scale of task by club legend

It doesn’t take much to light a fire under Roy Keane, with the former player turned pundit known for his confrontational ways on the pitch as well as in the punditry booth.

The former Manchester United great can often be cutting and isn’t afraid to say it how it is, often with entertaining side effects.

But following United’s draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge it was a player who didn’t start the game that wound Keane up, leading to an explosive argument with fellow pundit Jamie Carragher.

It was the removal of Cristiano Ronaldo from the starting eleven that caused the rift between the two, with Keane adamant he should be starting such an important game.

“Ronaldo’s not one to come off the bench. Ronaldo has not come back to sit on the bench.” Keane argued.

“He’s a world class player, the idea Ronaldo will close people down he’s not. But sometimes you have to work around the superstar.”

“I played with players who don’t do their bit you’d hope, the Cantonas of the world but you forgive him because they will score and win the matches. He could’ve played easily.”

Carragher pointed out the Portuguese legend’s age and lack of pressing as two potential reasons why he was not included, but the argument reignited when the pair discussed whether the signing was a mistake.

Keane: “Ronaldo was never going to get United back to winning titles.”

Carragher: “What was the point in signing him then?! He’s 37! If you finish 2nd and you then sign Ronaldo at 36, you’re not going to win the League in four years. If you sign someone at 36 it’s to win right now.”

Keane: “Well, Mourinho didn’t win the league but won one or two trophies. When you won the FA Cup were you not buzzing with that? United are a cup team at the moment.”

Carragher: “You’re happy with cups?

Keane: “I’m not but that’s where they are as a club. Look at the team look at the league, look at the last two or three years they won’t win the league for the two or three years, I’ll tell you that.”

Caretaker manager Michael Carrick explained the decision as ‘a few tweaks and changes’ and Ronaldo did ultimately come on but was unable to make an impact.

The constant criticism Ronaldo receives seems bizarre for a 36-year-old who has done exactly what he was brought in to do, it will be intriguing to see how he is used under incoming gaffer Ralf Rangnick for the remainder of the season.

Rangnick’s brilliant defensive midfield signing available for just £33m

With the imminent arrival of Ralf Rangnick, Manchester United fans are excited at how the German will revolutionise the football club.

Over recent years the club have made a number of poor decisions off the pitch that have crippled them on the pitch, meaning they are further away from England’s top teams than ever before.

Superstar signings have been prioritised with little thought to how and where they will work within the current system.

While we saw a slight shift away from this policy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, as great as he is, seemed to upset the balance and was clearly a decision based on commercial value.

With this in mind United fans will be delighted to hear the first players linked with the club since Rangnick’s arrival, as the former RB Leipzig manager is known for making shrewd signings.

Amadou Haidara is a midfielder Rangnick knows well, having signed him during his time with the Red Bull group, and could be just what United need.

The Mali international cut his teeth in the Austrian Bundesliga with RB Salzburg, before moving to sister club RB Leipzig and impressing in the German top flight.

He has made 100 appearances for Leipzig, contributing 16 goals (10 goals six assists) while often playing in a defensive midfield role.

He can also play as more of a box-to-box player and has very good progressive passes and shot creating action numbers per 90.

For example, his final full season at Salzburg saw him notch eight goals and provide a further 10 assists as the Austrian side reached the Europa League semi-finals.

On top of this he would also be available for around £33 million due to a release clause in his current contract, all the more encouraging when Declan Rice would likely cost three times as much.

It will be nice to see United linked with more smart signings under Rangnick and Haidara could be the first of many clever transfers by the club.

Rangnick expected to be confirmed as Man United manager within 24 hours - report

Manchester United will confirm the appointment of interim coach Ralf Rangnick within the next 24 hours, a new report claims.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein writes that ‘his appointment is expected to be confirmed in the next 24 hours but it is not yet clear whether his first game in charge will be Thursday’s visit of Arsenal or Crystal Palace’s trip to Old Trafford on December 5.

‘There is still some uncertainty over when Rangnick’s visa process will be completed following his face-to-face meetings in London’s Mayfair with the United hierarchy last week.’

Although many reports suggested that Rangnick was already influencing team selection and tactics for yesterday’s Premier league 1-1 draw with Chelsea, the same outlet reported that there had been no contact and that caretaker manager Michael Carrick was responsible for the decision making.

Rangnick is widely tipped to take charge of the club until the end of the season, when a permanent manager will be appointed.

Reported to be on the shortlist for that position are the likes of PSG’s Mauricio Pochettino, Ajax’s Erik ten Hag, Sporting’s Ruben Amorim and Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers.

Ornstein also claims that the German’s appointment has encouraged Paul Pogba to stay at the club.

‘The midfielder continues to rehabilitate in Dubai but is said to be enthused by the idea of working under Rangnick, having received positive feedback about the 63-year-old from contacts in the game.’

However, Pogba is keeping his options open in regard to his future and recently met PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi in a Paris hotel.

United have been reported to have left an offer on the table for Pogba, with some claiming it is in the region of a whopping £400,000, although Ornstein’s comments would suggest it is significantly lower.

‘The proposal from United would almost certainly need to improve for Pogba to accept it and if that does not happen they stand to lose for nothing a player they recruited for £89 million in 2016,’ he writes.

But with Pogba’s options diminishing, United’s offer may well be the best left available to him come the summer.

United star's meeting with president brushed off as 'coincidence' by European giants - report

Manchester United’s Paul Pogba has recently spoken to Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi amidst speculation he will leave Old Trafford this summer.

The Frenchman is out of contract in June and whilst United have left a lucrative deal on the table – reported to be in the region of £400,000 per week – he and his agent, Mino Raiola are keeping their options open and looking at other clubs for what is likely to be the last big contract of the player’s career.

Pogba has long been reported to hanker after a move to Real Madrid but that would now appear to be off the table, with los Blancos unwilling to break up their current midfield.

This leaves few clubs in the world able to compete, or even come close, to the wages United are offering, with PSG being the most likely in that regard.

‘Indeed, Pogba is unlikely to get the same salary anywhere other than PSG and, at a push, his former club Juventus,’ The Athletic reports.

‘Interestingly, the Manchester United midfielder briefly spoke to Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the PSG president, at a hotel in Paris recently.

‘PSG sources insist it was nothing more than a coincidence that they were in the same place at the same time.’

Possible of course, but it is strange that Pogba always happens to be in the same place, at the same time, as important individuals at clubs with which he has been linked. The same happened in 2018 when he was snapped talking to the then Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane.

The 28-year-old has been believed to be lukewarm about a move to PSG, given his family’s loyalty to rivals Marseille and to his desire to win honours at the top level. Ligue 1 does not have the status of La Liga, the Premier League or Serie A.

‘Not so long ago there were signs that Pogba was veering towards staying at United, but that was before his form tailed off and he picked up an injury,’ The Athletic continues.

‘There are all sorts of theories about what could happen next with him — some agents close to United believe that one motivation for renewing Pogba’s contract is that it could help the club protect its relationship with Mino Raiola and, in turn, aid the pursuit of another of the agent’s clients: Erling Haaland.’

That seems like a very convoluted plan, although nothing would surprise us when it comes to the United board.

Whatever the case, it would appear that Pogba’s future has become a three-horse race between United, PSG and Juventus. Not the Grand National that the player and former pizza chef agent had in mind, but a horse race, nonetheless.

Was Rangnick at the wheel against Chelsea? The Athletic reveals the truth

Manchester United’s caretaker manager Michael Carrick dropped Cristiano Ronaldo for yesterday’s trip to Chelsea in the Premier league but rumours abounded that he was following the orders of incoming interim coach, Ralf Rangnick.

United adopted a 4-3-3 system with Bruno Fernandes playing as a false nine and three workhorses – Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay and Fred operating in the centre of the park.

Carrick’s men also pressed higher up the pitch than had been the case for most of this season, further fuelling rumours that Rangnick, famed godfather of the ‘gegenpress’ method, was pulling the strings.

However, according to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, the selection and tactics was all down to Carrick.

‘The team at Stamford Bridge was not selected with Ralf Rangnick’s input, indeed there has been no contact with United’s coaching staff,’ Whitwell states.

‘But it is easy to see how the mobile front line of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Fernandes may marry with the style of play that the German is set to implement.’

Technical director Darren Fletcher, who was once again very animated on the touchline, was filmed speaking to someone via an earpiece during the match, giving rise to speculation it was the German. But again, Whitwell denies this.

‘Darren Fletcher’s earpiece drew attention. It was not Rangnick on the other end, however.

‘Some at United thought they may meet Rangnick at the team hotel before the game but with finishing touches still required on a work permit contact has been kept to executive level.’

The fact is that despite the hysteria, this side and approach to the game was a natural progression from Carrick’s first match in charge, when he also used a 4-3-3 against Villarreal in the Champions League.

Indeed, in our predicted XI article published on Saturday, we suggested that Ronaldo could be rested and Bruno played as a false nine in order to accommodate the extra man in midfield.

The shape and defensive organisation and level of pressing – despite being improved – also fell well short of Rangnick’s standards.

‘Thomas Tuchel, a Rangnick disciple, said United looked “not at all” like a team coached by the incoming incumbent of the Old Trafford hotseat,’ Whitwell confirms.

‘Pressing was evident but not as cohesive or intense as that seen in signature Rangnick teams.

‘The dominance Rangnick demands felt a long way off.’

Carrick may have been one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaches, but in both games under his command his personality has shone through and he must be given credit for steadying the ship as he has.

The 40-year-old was a calm, tidy and elegant midfielder and his immediate improvement of United’s central area is all to do with his own understanding of how the engine room of a Premier League side should tick and nothing to do with who comes next.

Eric Bailly confirms Ralf Rangnick: Man Utd's players have already been told

Manchester United star Eric Bailly has seemingly let it slip that Ralf Rangnick’s arrival is official, much to the delight of the fans.

There have been many reports the German boss has been hired as an interim manager until the end of the season but nothing was confirmed until now.

Rangnick has a tough job on his hands and does not have a long time to get the team playing in his image.

It typically takes managers, sometimes years, to implement their style but fans are hoping to see it sooner than later.

Rangnick is known for direct, high-pressing football, which is what supporters have wanted to see all season long.

Things unravelled for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who recently had to depart, but there’s recognition the squad is good enough to compete.

Rangnick is understood to have finally landed his dream job and is expected to stay on as an advisor for two years after his interim role.

The 1-1 draw vs Chelsea wasn’t ideal and if Rangnick resolves his work permit issues in time, he would face an in-form Arsenal side too.

It’s certainly not a good time to come in initially but the schedule is subsequently easier and should hopefully see United climb up the table.

Bailly probably shouldn’t have let it slip but it’s not as though he’s said something completely unexpected.

It will be interesting to see what Rangnick makes of the rash Ivorian and whether or not he has a future at the club.

Three things we learnt as Carrick continues positive United start

The honours were even at Stamford Bridge as Manchester United drew 1-1 with Chelsea on a cold winter’s evening.

Jadon Sancho opened his Premier League account by scoring the opener, racing through and finishing coolly past Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea were back on level terms before the 70 minute mark, when Aaron Wan-Bissaka fouled Thiago Silva in the box and Jorginho dispatched the resulting spot kick.

With the current state of the two sides, United fans won’t be too dismayed with a point and will be hoping Ralf Rangnick can build on the solid work Michael Carrick has done.

Here are three things we learnt from the game:

Carrick spell a success

It remains to be seen whether Michael Carrick has taken charge of his last game as United manager, but all things considered the former Champions League winner has performed admirably.

A win away against Villarreal and a point away at Chelsea have seen the freefall that saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lose his job come to an end.

Carrick hasn’t been afraid to drop big names and has seen a major improvement in the form of both Fred and Jadon Sancho.

New Brexit laws could mean incoming gaffer, Ralf Rangnick, may not even be in charge for Thursday’s game with Arsenal due to the need for a work permit.

But Carrick has at least shown he has something to offer beyond his caretaker spell in the German’s absence.

Three-man midfield

In what seemed a defensive move, United started with Fred, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay for their clash with Chelsea.

Having suffered humiliating defeats to both Liverpool and Manchester City, there was clearly an onus on being solid defensively, and the three men in the middle all put in impressive displays.

As expected, Chelsea dominated the ball and had a number of opportunities with United under pressure for large portions of the game.

But the legs of Fred and McTominay and the intelligence of Matic seemed to work well from a defensive standpoint. Rangnick will have to work out how to keep this defensive solidity while not losing the attacking flair United fans have become used to.

Counterattack

Having seen a deterioration in United’s playing style this season, it was nice to see United return to a counter attacking system against Chelsea.

The first half saw United sitting very deep, struggling to get out and only managing ten passes in the opposition final third.

The second half saw a marked improvement and United’s goal came from Sancho pressing Jorginho and racing through on goal.

United have the attacking players to cause teams a multitude of problems on the break, with a bit more direction and tactical nous this can become a dangerous weapon for United going forward.

Plenty to fix: Disheartening stat emerges after hard-fought draw with Chelsea

Manchester United’s clash vs Chelsea was far from a classic but it was certainly a hard-fought affair that seemed decently positive from the outside looking in.

However, the home side’s dominance, at least in terms of shots, saw United end their November poorly, leaving fans with lots to think about.

It’s clear to see something has gone horribly wrong at Carrington and the hope is the expected incoming Ralf Rangnick can coach the team back to good form.

The German manager is understood to be a perfectionist and someone who pays a lot of attention to detail, which is exactly what United need at this time.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently departed and many felt it was his coaching staff who let him down, given he didn’t actually run training sessions himself.

There are managers who don’t actually coach, which is ok in and of itself, but surely the legendary Norwegian should have brought someone in once he realised things were falling apart.

Ultimately, Solskjaer paid the price for Manchester United’s poor form and now fans are excited to see what Rangnick can do.

If the stat above is anything to go by, he has a lot of work to do in a short period of time, especially since it’s now the most congested part of the season in regards to fixtures.

Michael Carrick has done well to grab a crucial win against Villareal and the draw against Chelsea but the truth is that the Red Devils must pick up points quickly to save their season.

Manchester United have to go on some type of winning run if they hope to get into the top four, let alone challenge for a title that seems to be increasingly running away.

For now, it appears as though the Premier League is a three-horse race with Chelsea, Manchester City, and Liverpool all trying to outperform each other.

Third youngest in history - United man repays Carrick for letting him off the leash

After a slow start to his Manchester United career, Jadon Sancho has found his groove, scoring two goals in two games.

Today’s came in a sucker punch counter-attack that saw him run the length of the pitch, unable to square it to his co-conspirator Marcus Rashford, who inexplicably stayed a couple of feet ahead of him in an offside position, and forced to provide the finish himself.

However, Sancho kept his cool and slotted it past Mendy for the opening goal.

This brings Sancho’s direct goal involvements to 20 in league matches since the start of last season — nine goals and 11 assists. Most of those, of course, were in the Bundesliga in 2020/21.

The goal meant that at 21 years and 248 days, Sancho became the third-youngest player to score for Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. The two who did it sooner were Paul Scholes in 1995 aged 20 and Phil Neville in 1998, who was 21 years and 38 days old.

But it was not just Sancho’s goal that caught the eye. The England man completed 14 of 20 passes, completed a successful dribble, created a chance and converted his one chance.

Sancho’s improvement this week may be partly down to Michael Carrick’s more fluid team style. Under previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the 21-year-old appeared to have instructions to stick to his wing whereas under Carrick he has been given more licence to roam.

His form will be welcome news for incoming interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who will know his game all too well from his experience in the German league.

On this form, Sancho is arguably going to be ahead of fellow wingers Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial in the pecking order when Rangnick takes charge in the coming days.

Tenacious fighter: Man United star puts in world-class performance vs Chelsea

Manchester United star Fred certainly put on a show for the expected incoming interim manager Ralf Rangnick, as he performed superbly vs Chelsea.

Sky Sports handed the man-of-the-match award to Scott McTominay but many fans felt his midfield partner was more deserving.

Chelsea certainly dominated the clash but United improved in the second half and in the end earned their draw, though it could have been more than that.

Fred covered every blade of grass in typical fashion and was instrumental in giving his forwards the platform to perform.

The Red Devils weren’t at their best naturally but the clash was all about surviving, at least until Rangnick can come in and sort out the team the way he wants.

Michael Carrick grabbed a crucial win over Villareal midweek and managed a draw against the league’s most in-form team in Chelsea so it’s safe to say they’re two positive results.

Fred had a chance to help United to a second goal but unfortunately made the horrible decision to try to chip Edouard Mendy instead of laying it off to teammates who were in a better position.

Nonetheless, a draw was probably the fair result, especially since for all of Chelsea’s domination, they failed to truly put the visitors to the sword.

Grabbing three points before Rangnick’s appointment and before facing Arsenal would have been ideal but the fixture list soon lightens up and looks favourable.

Manchester United just need to hang on a touch longer and can then hopefully work towards improving their form and putting points on the board.

Fred is likely to be someone Rangnick likes and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him keep his place in the team.

Carrick's bold decisions pay dividends as United grab important point at Chelsea - match report

Manchester United held on for a draw against league leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge today in a feisty game which United had been given by many no chance of winning before they kicked off.

The first half was a dominant performance from the top of the table side. A chance for Chelsea came early on as Ziyech took a shot on the turn from a tight angle but it was well saved by David de Gea. Just a minute later, in the fourth minute Hudson Odoi found himself one on one with the keeper but again de Gea pulled off an incredible save to deny him.

United looked disorganised particularly at the back as they struggled to win the ball and keep possession.

However, that being said, United showed a desire to press Chelsea and try to win it back though they fell short of the task.

United were settling into the game though and at the twenty minute mark they showed their first quality run of play as they launched a counter attack but it ended when Fernandes, who had inspired the initial attack, swept it wide.

It was a half chance but they’d need to show more quality in the final third if they were to get anything out of this game. Meanwhile, the Blues were relentless in their attacks.

They rattled the crossbar in the 30th minute as Rudiger took a shot from outside the area. De Gea may have got fingertips to it but it was the woodwork that was credited for United still being in the game.

United showed the odd spark as they made good runs and counter attacks with Rashford and Sancho bursting forward on occasions, but it was all square at the break.

It had been a feisty game and it was no different in the second half. Marcus Rashford found himself in the book with an obvious challenge on Chalobah. James took the free kick, putting it into the box but what happened next had everyone gobsmacked.

A clearance from United found its way to Jorginho’s feet just past the halfway line. He miscontrolled the ball and seemingly didn’t realise Rashford and Sancho were charging at him in tandem. Sancho nicked the ball and the pair were away with no Chelsea player in sight. Sancho remained calm as he slotted it past Mendy.

United were rejuvenated and though Chelsea still had their moments (a series of corners generated nerves amongst United fans) it was United who looked a threat.

But then, a reckless clearance from Wan-Bissaka saw him kick through the back of Silva – penalty to Chelsea. Jorginho redeemed himself for the Blues as he converted and it was they who were on the front foot after that.

The substitutions made by Michael Carrick seemed bizarre as the two players who had pace, who sparked the counter-attack which led to the first goal found themselves sidelined with attacking work still to do for United.

The game was hanging in the balance, it could have gone either way but with corner after corner for Chelsea, it looked like it would be the home side who would take the points as we entered the final ten minutes.

A mistake from Mendy almost gifted United a goal as he passed it to Fred, however instead of playing it to Ronaldo who was waiting out wide he tried to chip it over the keeper. But it was an easy catch for Mendy, who had repositioned himself.

In the closing stages Tuchel was shown a yellow card as he raged about a corner given to United despite Ronaldo running offside. Nothing came of it except the booking for the incensed manager.

In the dying moments it was Rudiger who had the chance to win the game. He was unmarked as the ball was crossed into the box but he blasted it over the bar, falling to the floor in frustration.

Not a bad result for Carrick who sees himself unbeaten as reports of a new manager take shape.

United's unlikely hero wins our man of the match vs Chelsea - player ratings

Manchester United ground out a creditable 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge today in the Premier League. Here are our player ratings for the game.

(A score of 6 is around average.)

David de Gea 7.5 – Made some good saves but for once this season, was unable to stop the spot kick.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 4 – Horrible positioning again and gave away the penalty. Surely Dalot deserves a few games?

Victor Lindelof 5 – Some nasty errors early doors, but did get better in the second half.

Eric Bailly 7 – Did well. Bailly is a genius who makes the odd mistake, as opposed to Maguire who is average and makes a lot of mistakes.

Alex Telles 5 – A few defensive errors and not as good as usual going forward.

Scott McTominay 5 – Scott is the new Darren Fletcher – a world class performance now and again but bang average the rest of the time. Today was the latter. Don’t understand why Sky gave him MOTM. Fred was far better.

Nemanja Matic 6 – A bit hit and miss from Matic today. Too easily passed on some occasions but classy and calm on others.

Fred 8 – A really good game from Fred until that squandered chance in the 87th minute.

Jadon Sancho 7.5 – Not as good a performance as in midweek, but did take his gal very well. Really starting to find his groove at United.

Bruno Fernandes 6 – Did a lot of work defensively but for once, didn’t offer much going forward.

Marcus Rashford 6 – Worked hard but made some poor decisions. His run alongside Sancho for the latter’s goal was embarrassing – did nobody explain the offside rule to him?

Substitutes

Cristiano Ronaldo 6 – Did not affect the game much.

Jesse Lingard 6 – Didn’t influence the game much.

Donny van de Beek 6 – Didn’t influence the game much.

'Difference-maker': High praise for United keeper who is shining on international stage

Manchester United keeper, Mary Earps, shone yesterday for England in their World Cup qualifier against Austria.

The Lionesses went 1-0 up in the 39th minutes as Ellen White latched onto the end of a rebounded Fran Kirby shot in her 100th appearance for her country.

England have won all five of their qualifiers without conceding however this was their most difficult test as Austria responded.

Earps pulled off two world class saves to keep a clean sheet for England and her heroics didn’t go unnoticed by manager, Sarina Wiegman.

“Those two saves were difference-makers,” Wiegman said. “It was 1-0 and she keeps the score at 1-0. That’s so important.”

“In the moment when there are these shots she has to be concentrated and explosive in this action. She can make the difference and she did.”

Earps confidence has grown at club level since her return to international football and no doubt last night’s match will have given her a further boost.

Temperatures dropped below zero at the Stadium of Light as England held on.

The Lionesses have maintained a 100% record in qualifying and Wiegman said she was proud of the progress they have made together.

“The players who have come in have had such a history. The team has performed well in history already so we have very good players. We just added some details and some principles in the game and it really fits at the moment.”

Other Reds on the team sheet included Katie Zelem and Lessi Russo who were unused subs whilst Ella Toone started the game.

England will host Latvia in Doncaster on Tuesday in their next qualifier whilst in February they will host a round-robin competition featuring Germany and Spain.

Pogba's dream move in tatters after this bombshell from Spain - report

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has never been coy about his desire to one day play for Spanish giants Real Madrid.

And with just over six months remaining on his current deal, there has been plenty of speculation that the 28-year-old could run down his existing contract to seal a switch to the Bernabeau.

However, according to the latest report from Marca, that plan is set to be scuppered, with “Real not willing to please or give shape to the desire of the French international.”

The Spanish outlet believes that ‘Pogba’s Real dream is about to become a nightmare’ because, although Los Blancos rate his qualities, he doesn’t fit into their future plans.

While Real are said to have expressed an interest in the midfield magician back in 2019, they now intend to stick with Toni Kroos, Casemiro and the seemingly ageless Luka Modric.

Outside of that high-profile midfield trio, they also have back up in the form of youngsters Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and the promising Antonio Blanco.

All things considered, their wealth of midfield talent leaves the financially-challenged super club in a position of being picky over recruitment. And Pogba, it seems, will not be one of those picks.

Assuming the Spanish report is credible, does this latest development mean United’s injured star could find himself staying at Old Trafford due nothing other than to a lack of options?

If imminent interim manager Ralph Rangnick’s past comments still hold true, he might even find himself surplus to requirements in Manchester.

Back in 2017, the then-RB Leipzig Sporting Director declared that he “wouldn’t swap (Naby) Keita with Pogba for our style of play.”

It doesn’t bode well for a player who, despite his obvious quality, has proven to be a hugely divisive figure during two turbulent spells as a Red Devil.

With his options narrowing and a laser-focused disciplinarian inbound, what does all of this mean for fans of the gifted maestro?

The answer is that we’ll be still talking about his future for some time to come.
