Man United target set for showdown talks with manager ahead of potential transfer

Manchester United target and Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier is reportedly set to hold showdown talks with manager Diego Simeone as he looks to secure a transfer.

The experienced Englishman has been on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s radar all summer long, though negotiations have never really advanced.

Atletico have been stubborn about their high pricetag for Trippier and that has left United scratching their heads.

The La Liga giants have had various reports claiming they want various figures such as €30m or €40m for his signature.

United are naturally hesitant to cough up that much after spending large amounts on the likes of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

The Peoples Person last covered a report on Trippier when it was claimed he was willing to bide his time to get his dream move to Old Trafford.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man emerged as a target for Solskjaer when it was claimed he was looking for competition and depth for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The legendary Norwegian is also said to be dissatisfied with the young Englishman’s attacking output and wants to give him a big push.

Trippier’s versatility is also likely a big plus for Solskjaer who would suddenly find himself with good cover all across his backline.

Wan-Bissaka was hardly rested last season and there were plenty of occasions when he looked a little worse for wear.

Manchester United would get a boost in their bid to get their target if Trippier pushes for the exit doors and helps reduce his price tag.

More signings? United plot deadline-busting moves to ensure an explosive August

Manchester United remain in the market for new signings, but any new additions will first depend upon fringe players being sold.

According to ESPN, the club went into the summer looking to sign a winger, centre-back, central midfielder and right-back.

With the two main priorities having been solved by the signings of Jadon Sancho and the imminent Raphael Varane, United are thought to be in dialogue with the agents of Eduardo Camavinga, Ruben Neves and Kieran Tripper.

It is reported that a Trippier deal remains a work in progress, however Atletico Madrid have so far been reluctant to budge from their £43m asking price.

Previous reports have suggested that United are unwilling to break the bank for a 30-year-old with just one year left on his current deal.

However, the report also claims that “sources have told ESPN there is a strong possibility Sancho and Varane will be the only major signings of the summer.”

Any further reinforcements could rest upon the futures of Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira and Diogo Dalot.

All three enjoyed successful loan spells last term and continue to be linked with both loan and permanent moves away from Old Trafford.

It’s said that Pereira is keen to move in order to develop his career, with Turkish side Fenerbahce thought to be chasing his signature.

The Brazilian did his utmost to stay at the front of the shop window with a stunning volley against Brentford in midweek.

Which brings us to the ongoing saga of Paul Pogba. The United hierarchy is said to be losing hope over an extension and are ready to entertain bids from interested parties.

However, only PSG have been seriously linked with the French ace, and they’re yet to make direct contact over a deal.

Ticking time bomb: United destined for doom with Pogba unless they do this

Manchester United star Paul Pogba could reportedly still stay at the club even if he doesn’t sign an extension soon but surely that isn’t the best course of action for the club?

The World Cup winner’s future has been uncertain for a while now but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must ensure his side are in the driving seat of any negotiations at all times.

According to Sky Sports, Pogba knows if he remains patient then he will have more options, whether that is signing a new deal with the Red Devils or choosing between Europe’s top clubs.

It is understood PSG are interested in signing him this window despite talks continuing between his representatives and his current club.

Manchester United ideally want to resolve his situation this summer and although he can see his long-term future at the club, he’s choosing his next big contract carefully.

It’s believed that if Pogba doesn’t sign a new contract by the end of the window it doesn’t mean he will certainly leave as he is excited with the direction Solskjaer is taking the team in.

The Peoples Person last covered a report on the sensational Frenchman when he put up a picture on Instagram showing that he was on a video call with incoming teammate with Raphael Varane.

United have to set a deadline for Pogba and his infamous agent Mino Raiola to make a decision by a certain date or the decision will be made for them.

If they do that then they ensure they’re in the best position possible to replace him and protect the future of the club.

If Pogba is left to decide when he wants to stay or go then that will leave the club in panic mode and forced to chase a new signing.

It will also leave the Red Devils on the bad side of negotiations with whichever club they’re approaching for their talent.

Open-ended situations like this never really end well for any club and Solskjaer must get a grip on the situation to ensure he’s not left empty-handed.

"I'll be there": Man United star makes exciting promise to fans

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has sent fans a rather brilliant message explaining his current situation.

The sensational Englishman will be out of action for the foreseeable future due to a shoulder injury that has been troubling all season long.

Despite his fitness woes and occasional inconsistent form, Rashford ended the season with a remarkable record of 36 goal contributions.

There’s no doubt the academy graduate has improved year on year and certainly seems to be enjoying his football under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The legendary Norwegian has largely used Rashford as a left-winger, though the player’s versatility has come into use many times last season.

The Peoples Person previously reported Rashford’s decision to get the surgery that could see him out of action for roughly 12 weeks.

In fact, the 23-year-old’s absence seems to have affected Solskjaer’s plans for the summer transfer window in regards to what he should do with his squad.

For example, there have been whispers of interest in Daniel James from the likes of Burnley but now the former Molde boss can’t afford to let him go.

If Rashford is out until October, and that heavily depends on how well recovery goes, he will likely need time on top of that to get back to full fitness.

In that sense, it’s understandable to want to hold onto squad players until at least the winter transfer window when the picture can be clearer.

Nonetheless, given what Rashford achieved last season despite carrying many knocks, fans will be extremely excited to see what he can achieve when he’s fit and fresh.

Medical this week, earlier than expected: United close to unveiling of mega signing

Raphael Varane will arrive in England on Monday to complete his sensational move from Real Madrid to Manchester United.

The deal between the two clubs was struck this week but the Frenchman has been waiting for quarantine clearance to come to the UK to complete his medical and sign for the Red Devils.

However, quarantine rules are changing from August 2nd, removing the need for restrictions. And according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the transfer should now continue without delay.

‘Raphaël Varane update. He’s planning to fly to Manchester earlier next week [should be Monday] to complete his move as Manchester United player,’ Romano tweeted.

‘Medical and contract signing are also scheduled next week, then Varane will be unveiled as new signing after Sancho.’

Varane was also photographed yesterday saying goodbye to his Real Madrid teammates.

He has been at the Bernabeu for 10 years, so the farewell was a particularly emotional one.

The 28-year-old also posted an emotional farewell to Real Madrid supporters on Instagram (via The BBC), saying:

‘After 10 amazing and wonderful years at Real Madrid, a club I will always carry in my heart, the day has come to say goodbye.

‘I had the honour of sharing the locker room with the best players in the world. Countless victories I’ll never forget, especially “La Decima”. I realise it’s been a great privilege to have been able to live those special moments.

‘I want to thank all Spaniards and especially the city of Madrid, where my two children were born. This country will always be special to me. It’s been an amazing journey in every way.’

Sneaky: Glazers pocket £8m more from United while fans distracted by new signings

Manchester United’s controlling shareholders, the Glazer family, quietly slipped themselves another dividend payment yesterday as fans remain distracted by the summer purchases of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

The American Stock Exchange NASDAQ announced the dividend payment yesterday, saying:

‘A cash dividend payment of $0.09 per share is scheduled to be paid on July 30, 2021.

‘Shareholders who purchased MANU prior to the ex-dividend date are eligible for the cash dividend payment.

‘This marks the 10th quarter that MANU has paid the same dividend. At the current stock price of $14.94, the dividend yield is 2.41%.’

According to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, in cash terms this amounts to another £8 million or so that the American family are taking out of the club.

In his column this morning, Whitwell is musing as to whether the euphoria of the Sancho and Varane deals will have diffused the tension between United’s fans and the club’s owners.

‘For many, particularly those in the stands, good transfers in one window will not atone for the Super League plot that threatened to change the essence of the game; a coup that brought apologies only because it failed,’ Whitwell says.

‘Latent animosity towards the Glazer’s leveraged takeover and its £1.5 billion cost to United is always bubbling close to the surface too.’

Whitwell spoke to 50-year United fan Tony Park about the lack of anti-Glazer sentiment during the recent pre-season friendly against Brentford.

‘It will be a different atmosphere at Leeds when there will be hostility in the air anyway,’ Park said.

‘That could tip over to focus on the owners.

‘Those signings are the minimum. It is like when you own a house, you need to spend a certain amount to maintain its upkeep. For United, upkeep means challenging for trophies.

‘Investment in the team is a basic commitment for custodians of the club.’

Another lifelong season ticket holder, Joanne Marshall, agreed.

‘Throughout the season you will hear discontent because we need to say that in general we are not happy with the way football is going.

‘The owners say they want to be this big club. Well if that’s the case, put in as much as you take out.’

Young United midfielder completes transfer to Scottish champions

Manchester United have confirmed that academy star Charlie McCann has completed a transfer to Rangers.

The club announced the deal on the official website.

The move is reportedly worth up to £750,000 according to The MEN.

The midfielder will initially be linking up with the Rangers B team, where he will look to impress manager Steven Gerrard to earn a call up to the first team.

Having completed his medical, the Irish youth international has signed a three year deal at the Glasgow club, becoming one of very few players to have represented Ireland and join Rangers.

Upon signing for his new club, McCann took to Twitter to say he is “excited to sign for such a huge and historic club, thanks to all at Rangers for giving me this opportunity, can’t wait to get started.”

McCann had joined United from Coventry City as a 16 year old and featured through the ranks as a central midfielder and on occasion as a left winger during his first year in the u18s.

As a second year scholar, McCann was pushed deeper into a role at the base of the midfield and awarded the captain’s armband for the u18s after Teden Mengi was promoted to the u23s.

A diminutive midfielder, McCann displays a strong range of passing from deep and an ability to make driving runs through the midfield.

Far more comfortable in possession and up the field, the youngster has a keen eye for goal, scoring 17 times in 62 appearances for United’s u18s and u23s.

Due to the strength in competition in United’s ranks however, McCann largely found himself enrolled in a more ill-suited defensive midfield role.

As a result, McCann played a key role last term in the u23s ending the season with the second most goals in the league, but also with the second most conceded.

The midfielder’s attacking instincts and tendency to chase the play often left large gaps in the centre of the park, exposing the already makeshift backline the u23s were dealing with.

With his move further north, McCann will be hoping he can find a more suitable role in the Rangers set up.

A new dawn: Man Utd women appoint world class manager

Manchester United Women have confirmed the signing of Marc Skinner as their new head coach.

The 38 year old joins on a two year deal, with an option to extend a further year.

He replaces Casey Stone following her resignation at the end of last season.

According to The Telegraph, United identified Skinner as their ideal target and were quick to reach an agreement with American club Orlando Pride to get their man.

After stepping down as Birmingham City manager in 2019, Skinner moved to coach the Flordia-based team.

At Birmingham, Skinner reached the 2017 Women’s FA Cup final and finished fourth in the Women’s Super League.

United finished fourth in the WSL the last term, narrowly missing out on a European place.

John Murtough, the club’s football director, stated: “First and foremost, Marc is an excellent coach, but he also has incredible drive, ambition and a vision for the team, which really impressed us during the recruitment process.

“We are confident that Marc is the best person to be leading the team as we look forward to another exciting season.”

At Birmingham, Skinner’s team had a distinct style of play. Playing out from the back, neat possession and quick transitions were an essential aspect of his side’s overall gameplay.

Under Skinner the Blues upset the odds to reach the 2017 Women’s FA Cup final, knocking out Chelsea in the semi-finals.

His side boasted a solid defensive record and was difficult to beat.

The impressive spell earned him a move to Florida, where he worked with some of the biggest-name players in the sport, from Brazil legend Marta to World Cup-winning icon Alex Morgan.

In his first interview since joining United, Skinner said: “I am excited and proud to become head coach at Manchester United.”

“I’m looking forward to working closely with the staff and this talented group of players. Our focus is to build on everything they have already achieved in the women’s game.”

In the WSL, it will be a challenge to break Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City’s hold on the top three positions.

Skinner will be looking to propel United into the European spots, a feat the women’s team has never achieved.

Solskjaer lets slip about United transfer plans during 25-year anniversary interview

It’s 25 years since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed the contract that started his memorable Manchester United career.

For fans of a certain vintage, those words could elicit a wince regarding the march of time, followed closely by a flash of fuzzily sweet memories.

On the anniversary of his arrival, Solskjaer has looked back upon his part in United folklore during an interview with the club’s official website.

The Norwegian talks about the whirlwind move that swept him from the relative obscurity of Molde to front-page prominence as scorer of arguably the most famous goal in Red Devils’ storied history.

Of his memories surrounding the day he joined, he admits, “To be completely honest, I can’t remember! I remember…I went for a walk around Old Trafford and I met one of the stewards and he asked me who I was and if I was doing a guided tour.”

Although he was not overawed about playing on a grander stage, he does admit to looking forward to meeting a certain iconic Frenchman.

“I was looking forward to meeting Eric…That was one man I was looking forward to making an impression on.

“And when I scored (a debut goal) and I saw Eric running over, that was a special moment.”

He admits that Cantona’s decision to retire took him by surprise. In fact, he’d spent an evening partying with the iconic striker just days before the decision was made public.

“That’s just Eric for you – he had never mentioned anything when we were partying just two days before. It was disappointing but I really enjoyed my year with him. What a character. I learned so much from him.”

As a seemingly unassuming personality, it’s difficult to picture Solskjaer being on the receiving end of Fergie’s famous hairdryer.

However, even the ‘Baby-faced assassin’ incurred the boss’ wrath after receiving a late red card for a professional foul against Newcastle.

“Oof…the hairdryer I got after the game, and the reasoning why he gave it to me…Man United don’t want to win that way…I’d probably do it again though.”

Aside from looking back over his playing career, he also looks ahead to another season in the United hot seat.

On aspirations for his exciting young side, he admits that he’s encouraged by the rate of progress but expects further signings and a quick start to the new campaign.

“We’re progressing.” He says, “We just have to improve. Hopefully we can add some quality to the squad and we’re ready to start the season well. That’s the main thing – to start well.”

It’s an interview that provides insight into a figure whose likeability often obscures his steely focus and will to win.

Hopefully he’s on the cusp of providing a new generation of fans with the kind of beautiful memories he provided so often in his magical heyday as a player.

Premier League and Turkish clubs fighting over 25 year old United midfielder - report

Manchester United’s Andreas Pereira is a possible midfield target for Turkish club Fenerbahce and an unknown Premier League team.

According to TNT Sports, Fenerbahce have enquired about the price of the Brazilian.

The original transfer fee set by United was in the region of £25 million.

Still, the Turkish club expects the value to be reduced due to the ongoing pandemic’s economic impact.

The report also suggests interest from an unknown Premier League club, whose name is kept confidential by request of the source.

Pereira broke into United’s senior team in 2015. Since then, he has been loaned out to three different clubs: Granada, Valencia and Lazio.

The 25 year old was handed a new four-year contract in 2019, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to bring out the best in him.

The player has shown promise on many occasions but has failed to deliver consistent performances for Man United.

In 75 appearances for the club, Pereira has managed to score just four goals despite playing as an advanced midfielder for the most part.

The Brazilian, however, was at his absolute best in United’s 2-2 draw against Brentford in Wednesday’s pre-season friendly.

Pereira rattled the net with a 30-yard volley, causing Old Trafford to erupt.

Speaking to MUTV, he added: “As soon as Jesse hit it, it came off the goalkeeper, and I thought that I might have a chance here, and as soon as I hit it, it felt good straight away.”

“It was a nice feeling, having the fans back in and scoring the goal.”

United’s search for a new midfielder this window could open the door for the Brazilian to leave.

At this stage of his career, it would be ideal for Pereira to find regular game time at another club.

Talented young United centre back set for loan deal to Championship side

Manchester United youngster Di’Shon Bernard is expected to join Championship club Hull City on loan to further develop his first-team action.

Bernard joined the club from the Chelsea academy in 2017 and the centre-back has become an important and impressive academy prospect.

Last season, Bernard spent the season a few minutes away from the club at league two side Salford City.

During his time at Salford, he managed to achieve 29 league appearances where he scored two goals as per transfermarkt in a season where he made his first professional league debut.

Bernard actually made his full professional debut with Man United during the Europa League group stages in the 2019-20 season vs. Astana.

The academy staff and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now believe the time is right to make the upgrade to the Championship and further develop the player.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Bernard will move out on a season-long loan to Hull City.

Bernard has also been a part of Solskjaer’s first team pre-season squad, mainly down to the lack of reinforcements in defence. However he has been impressive and will now try and impress the manager further if the loan goes ahead.

With the centre back roster increased even more with the addition of Raphael Varane, Bernard will almost certainly not achieve the playing time he would need at Old Trafford to develop his understanding of the game, so a loan move is justified.

The Hull Daily Mail are reporting that ‘it looks as though Bernard could arrive before Friday’s friendly against Sunderland.’

Hull City will be a tough challenge for the youngster, but a good decision as they are struggling to add first-team centre-backs to the squad. This could mean the defender might get a hefty amount of games under his belt.

Speaking about his experience as a first-team centre-back at Salford last season, it sounds like he learnt a lot.

“To be fair, I’m just happy I took the step to come out on loan instead of just staying in the Under-23s as I’ve definitely developed as a player and learned a lot of new things.”

“First-team football was definitely something I needed.”

“It comes to a point where the Under-23s was no longer a test [for me] and you need to go out and play men’s football to test your ability.”

“I think I’ve coped well in League Two. I’ve come up against a lot of different players and I think I’ve done well, to be honest.”

Bernard will now be hoping that he has a similar experience at his next club and will come back with even more experience under his belt.

Covid scare leaves United desperately short of match fitness for new season

It would appear that Manchester United’s pre-season friendly match against Preston North End tomorrow was postponed unnecessarily, as the Covid-19 scare among the squad proved to be a false alarm.

The Red Devils were due to play the Lilywhites at Deepdale tomorrow but routine Covid lateral flow testing at Carrington revealed some suspected cases.

The people involved, believed to include a small number of players and staff, immediately isolated and PCR testing was initiated.

However, the club has now issued a statement which reads as follows:

‘After further testing yesterday [Thursday] and today [Friday], we can confirm that there are no positive cases within the first-team group.

‘Following consultation with the Premier League, they are satisfied that all COVID protocols have been followed correctly and the squad can return to training immediately.’

It is unfortunate that the friendly was cancelled as the team’s preparatory schedule for the new season was already very sparse.

Most of the first team squad are only now starting to return from holiday after taking part in either Euro 2020 or the Copa America, leaving just tomorrow’s game and one next Saturday against Everton for them to achieve match fitness before the big kick-off against Leeds on 14th August.

Unless another match can be arranged at short notice, the Everton fixture at Old Trafford will be the only match practice the majority of the squad will have.

This could persuade manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to start the season with some of the players who have starred against Derby County, QPR and Brentford this summer while easing the bigger stars in more gradually.

That, in turn, may also cause some delays in potential loan deals. For example, with Alex Telles injured and Luke Shaw having just one game to achieve fitness, the boss could decide to play Brandon Williams at left back against Leeds, putting any possible loan on hold.

The same may be true for the likes of Axel Tuanzebe, Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira.

Key target prepared to wait till end of window for dream United move

Manchester United could acquire Kieran Trippier before the final days of the transfer window as he enters his final year at Atletico Madrid.

It has been known that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would like to improve last season’s defence for many months and this is something that looks likely to take until the final days of the transfer window.

Having already secured Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, the priority will turn to a midfielder and then hopefully a right back.

The Trippier rumours have been fluctuating for the past couple of weeks as it remains unclear if he will end up at United.

According to the Telegraph, the English right-back believes his hopes of securing a move to Old Trafford will probably only be realised at the closing stages of the window.

At Atletico, Trippier is no longer included in the spots allocated for European players but instead, takes up one of the limited Non-EU spots. That plus the fact that his contract is entering its last year could eventually put enough pressure on Atleti to sell.

Since the transfer window opened, United have secured Jadon Sancho, Tom Heaton and Raphael Varane.

It is thought that the Sancho and Varane signings have used up the transfer budget, so United will turn to moving on some players from the current squad in order to find more money for potential signings.

The Telegraph explains that Trippier still has a family who lives in the northwest and is conscious about United’s need to raise money to obtain him and decrease the hefty wage bill.

If Solskjaer secures his man, he would be joining a very talented predominantly English squad, much as it was under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Trippier would offer a threat from set-pieces, much like we see on the international stage, but also perhaps a greater attacking threat down that right-hand side than current incumbent, Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The 30-year-old can also play at left-back, as he has for England, meaning United will have more quality cover in both full-back positions.

If Trippier does arrive it will almost certainly mean that Brandon Williams will move out on loan as he will be further behind in the pecking order once again.

Marcus Rashford out for 12 weeks as he faces shoulder surgery

Marcus Rashford will undergo surgery on his injured shoulder, it has been confirmed today.

Rashford has been struggling with the injury for several months and delayed surgery to take part in Euro 2020, even though he was rarely used by England head coach Gareth Southgate.

It was originally reported that Rashford had decided to go ahead with the surgery but United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer indicated that the decision had not yet been made.

But The Telegraph’s James Ducker has confirmed this morning that the surgery will go ahead, meaning that the 23-year-old will miss 12 weeks of football – at least the first nine matches of United’s Premier League season as well as the first three Champions League fixtures.

‘Rashford is understood to have met with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Thursday and explained his eagerness to undergo an operation to address a problem he has been managing since last November,’ Ducker reports.

‘Rashford tore a muscle in his left shoulder against Arsenal on November 1 and would later require pain killing injections to help him through games.

‘Although he was told the injury would not get any worse, he was conscious it did not improve either, with the swelling causing him serious discomfort and inhibiting his movement and ability to hold up and challenge for the ball, particularly later in the games.

‘Rashford underwent consultation in Liverpool on July 13. Surgery was not possible straight away and United encouraged him to consider his options during a short break.

‘He is keen to return in peak condition next season after being forced to manage a number of injuries over the past two seasons.’

Ducker also points out that another niggling injury that Rashford has been carrying will also be assessed at the same time, that being ankle ligament damage. In fact, the reporter believes that Rashford’s unselfishness has led to him having more serious problems than should have been the case.

‘Rashford has pushed his body further than a lot of his colleagues would be willing or even permitted to do and, in some cases, to his detriment,’ Ducker says.

‘He could not continue like that for ever, though; not if he is to maintain his explosive style of play.

‘There was always going to come a point where Rashford had to put himself first for once and listen to what his body was telling him, regardless of outside influences, and his decision to press ahead with surgery to repair a shoulder injury that has been hampering him since the beginning of November is a wise one.’

Man United unveil new away kit in homage to 30-year-old design

Manchester United stars have been showing off the new 2021/22 away kit, unveiled today by the club and Adidas.

Photos of Paul Pogba, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Scott McTominay emerged on Twitter this morning.

New signing Jadon Sancho has also been snapped in the new gear:

Dan James has tweeted a photo of himself in the kit.

And the club’s official announcement swiftly followed.

The new kit, with an ice blue striped pattern on white background with red trim, is described by United’s website as a nod to a famous kit of some 30 years ago.

‘The iconic ‘snowflake’ jersey of 1990/92 is one of the most popular kits in United history, so it’s no surprise that you can see it on terraces at pretty much every game,’ the announcement read.

‘It’s a kit that nobody has forgotten about, and one that has transcended generations. It also inspired our recent collaboration with adidas and Pharrell Williams to create the Human Race FC jersey last season.’

As with the recent new first team kit, fans are encouraged by anti-Glazer protesters to boycott the new official merchandise and buy replicas or retro shirts instead.

The anti-Glazer movement #NotAPennyMore have launched a campaign encouraging fans to join the boycott.

Shirt sales are a big revenue earner for the Glazer family and the intention is to discourage fans from lining the pockets of the American tycoons and thereby weaken their position at the club.

The message from the boycott movement is ‘Go vintage this season’.

Photos – Jadon Sancho training hard ahead of Man United debut

Jadon Sancho looks ready to hit the ground running at Manchester United after posting pictures on Instagram of himself weight training.

Sancho, who captioned the post simply with an ‘effort’ emoji, ‘😤’, has sent out a positive message for United fans while other players opted for more family, holiday and relaxation-based pictures on their social media.

Sancho was finally announced as a United player 7 days ago after over a year of difficult negotiations with Borussia Dortmund.

In the end the deal United made was seen as something of a coup, as they paid just £73 million for a player with a market value of £86 million.

In the previous transfer window, Dortmund had been asking for an amount in the region of £100m.

The payments are also able to be split over several years, easing the financial burden on the Old Trafford outfit.

The 21-year-old scored 50 goals and registered 64 assists in four seasons with the German club.

Due to his participation in Euro 2020, he is still on holiday but is expected to join up with the United squad for the first time next week.

His friend and England colleague Marcus Rashford may or may not be joining him as a decision is still yet to be made as to whether he will undergo surgery on a troublesome shoulder injury that affected him for a large portion of last season.

Rashford is believed to want to go ahead with the surgery but the club is not as sure.

If he does go under the knife it will rule him out of action until October.

Is Charlie Austin right about Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s defending?

Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin, featured on talkSPORT this week, has claimed Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the weak link in Manchester United’s backline and needs to be replaced.

Coming after United’s disappointing 4-1 loss to QPR in pre-season last Saturday, opposition striker Charlie Austin, who found the net on the day, spoke about the Manchester club’s chances this season.

Not holding back any punches, Austin claimed Wan-Bissaka is not up to the required standard.

Speaking on the defender, he said “we played them the other day, and I know it was only a pre-season, but they need to go all out for Kieran Trippier. That’s who they’re crying out for. Aaron Wan-Bissaka can’t defend.”

A somewhat surprising criticism, Wan-Bissaka is often given plaudits for his defending, but after experiencing it first hand, Austin is left disagreeing.

Does the Championship striker have a point though? While Wan-Bissaka does excel at 1v1 defending and is an exceptional tackler, defending does require more.

Most notably, aerially the right-back is weak and only wins 1.17 aerial duels per 90 minutes, putting him in only the 49th percentile of full-backs in the top five European leagues.

Additionally, are the lapses of concentration that have become more evident in Wan-Bissaka’s game.

Left scrambling at the back post against QPR on Saturday, it was a re-occurrence of a common deficiency in his positioning and awareness last season.

Examples include United’s dropped points at home to Fulham, where Wan-Bissaka was caught drifting inside and not covering the late run, leaving space on the far post for Fulham’s goal. He was also culpable of breaking several offside traps on the day.

Or on the biggest stage in the Europa League final, Wan-Bissaka’s failure to cover a simple 1-2 run from Sergio Reguilon led to the first goal and his unawareness of Luuk De Jong at the back post allowed the Dutch man to slot home, sealing defeat.

As a result, despite the world-class tackling, Wan-Bissaka’s defensive positioning and awareness leave a glaring weakness in United’s new look backline.

Further to his defending, Austin also said ” his final ball is not what a centre-forward wants, it’s not what [Edinson] Cavani wants, it’s not what [Marcus] Rashford wants.”

This is a criticism which is backed up by the stats, as he sits in only the 27th percentile for expected assists and 39th percentile for shot-creating actions by full-backs. This is far too low down for a club challenging for the top of the league.

Further back on the field, his on the ball deficiencies are arguably even more impactful. Often being the target of opposition presses, Wan-Bissaka is in the 41st percentile for progressive passes. Luke Shaw by comparison is in the 91st percentile.

Austin’s suggestion of signing Kieran Trippier may yet be fulfilled as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer chases his signing. Put off by Atletico Madrid’s asking price, it is a move that is believed will go down to the wire.

Either way, it is evident Ole is looking for a right-back signing, whether as competition or to take over Wan-Bissaka’s starting role is yet to be seen, but if Charlie Austin and Gareth Southgate’s opinions are to go by, Trippier will be forcing his way into the starting 11.

How Wolves’ Ruben Neves could transform Manchester United

There’s little doubt that, in doing their business quickly, Manchester United have already had what appears to be a successful transfer window.

With Jadon Sancho signed and Raphael Varane imminent, the focus has already begun to shift towards the next likely arrival.

It’s been widely reported that United are in the market for a new midfielder, with Wolves’ Ruben Neves thought to feature prominently on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s wishlist.

Tifo has presented an interesting analysis of Neves, as they question whether the Wolves ace has the characteristics to help take an emerging Red Devils to the next level.

Neves is seen as a player who could slot seamlessly into Solslkaer’s tried-and-trusted 4-2-3-1 formation. His defensive stats are broadly comparable with Fred’s, so it seems that the Brazilian would be most likely to make way.

However, there’s been speculation that Solskjaer is moving towards a more progressive 4-3-3 next term, and Neves appears to be the perfect No.6 for that system.

In fact, it’s possible that the Wolves star could put an end to two of the most divisive features of the current iteration of Manchester United.

Firstly, he would break up the Scott McTominay / Fred axis, replacing one of two players who, despite bringing plenty of vim and vigour, lack creativity and craft.

Secondly, as the base of the 4-3-3, Neves’ excellent long-range passing could transform the current side’s ability to break down compact defences.

Last season the Reds often appeared static, which gave the impression that they didn’t have the guile or speed of play to break down a well-organised back four.

Tifo suggests that, with Neves ability to switch play and quicken the tempo, United would find it easier to move defenders out of position, unsettling even the most resilient of rear guards.

In short, the midfielder could add a completely different dimension to the somewhat limited ‘McFred’.

His versatility means he would be just as comfortable sparking rapid counter attacks with balls out wide as he would probing for holes within a possession-based system.

The 24-year-old can push up and join in with the attacking phase, while also being adept at seizing upon loose balls around the opposition penalty box.

He also does the defensive stuff well and, statistically, is said to be behind only pure DMs such as Yves Bissouma and Wilfried Ndidi. However, the obvious trade-off is that those two don’t have anything like Neves’ passing ability.

The Portuguese could effectively become United’s 3rd play maker – after assist-kings Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw – so could give the side a broader attacking threat.

All things considered, there are relatively few signings who can have a transformative impact upon a new club, but Neves seems to have the tools to do just that.

And, after appearing to stagnate in the Midlands, it could be the kind of move that revitalises the player and helps turn those dour Old Trafford draws into vital victories.

He might not generate the same glitzy headlines as someone like Sancho, but everything seems to suggest that the Wolves man would be an equally crucial piece in a potentially title-winning outfit.

'An asset': Solskjaer hints Man United youngster could stay beyond pre-season

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has continued his praise for pre-season star Anthony Elanga who has been in stunning form of late.

The young winger has picked up from where he left off last season and has insured he’s given his manager a selection headache with his performances.

It’s the good kind of problem for Solskjaer to have and he himself has admitted he may have to consider keeping Elanga beyond the summer.

Many expected the Swedish attacker to be sent on loan in order to aid his development, particularly with the arrival of Jadon Sancho.

However, some scintillating performances in pre-season has left many to wonder whether the club are better off keeping him on board.

According to the club’s official website, Solskjaer said: “The first goal had some great passes, some combination play, a big switch from Nemanja {Matic], some good play and a great volley from Anthony who’s just improving and getting better and better.

“The boy is electric, has energy and enthusiasm, he’s really enjoying himself. He’s done himself the world of good.

“We know he’s a good player, we know he’s a good lad. He works so hard, he’s always smiley, bright, asking what more he needs to do, he’s so hungry to improve and get better.

“He can play wide left, wide right, up front.. so anywhere along the front line. He’s going to be an asset.”

The Peoples Person last covered news on Elanga when Solskjaer spent the last press conference praising him then too.

It’s clear the legendary Norwegian has a lot of time for his young star and it will be interesting to see what he decides to do.

Elanga is perhaps best served getting regular first-team minutes on loan but the form he’s in means he’s not far off from being ready to be a part of the current squad.

Fabrizio Romano: United have made enquiries about midfield ace

Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Athletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.

As per Fabrizio Romano (via YouTube), United, among other clubs like Chelsea and Liverpool, have enquired about the availability of the 26 year old.

The Spaniard is regarded as a most attainable midfield target, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona had opened talks regarding a swap deal involving Saul and Antoine Griezmann.

However, both Ara and Mundo Deportivo report that Barcelona has pulled the plug on the potential transfer after deciding “it’s not a good move.”

The Catalan club still needs to pay the €72 million of Griezmann’s fee and don’t think it’s a fair swap.

The salaries of both players have also been an obstacle to any deal. Griezmann’s salary is out of Atletico’s reach, while Saul does not want to take a pay cut to join the Catalan giants.

If the deal doesn’t go through, United could get their man at a possible bargain price.

Due to Atletico’s weak financial situation, they could sell Saul for a much reduced rate.

The 26 year old has been a mainstay in Diego Simeone’s side over the past six years. He, along with compatriot Koke, form the crux of Atletico’s midfield.

Saul is a versatile player and can play anywhere across the midfield. He has the dribbling ability and vision to play further up the pitch and the defensive awareness to anchor the midfield.

His quick one-touch passing and movement allow Atletico to bypass the opposition press and progress the ball vertically up the pitch.

Saul is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure with his back to goal and always makes himself available during the build-up.

With United looking to buy a midfielder this summer, the Spaniard could be the answer to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s needs.

Major boost: Man United given hope in bid to kick off season in style

Manchester United star Luke Shaw has reportedly given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a major boost ahead of the new campaign.

The sensational Englishman has been in remarkable form of late and fans are excited to see him back in action.

Alex Telles was trying to take advantage of Shaw’s absence from pre-season, due to being on holiday, by bringing his fitness levels back up to standard and playing a starring role.

Unfortunately the Brazilian left-back succumbed to his own injury, suffering a knock in training that will see him out of action for the near future.

Telles’ absence has seen Brandon Williams fill in at left-back but fans were hoping Shaw would make a miraculous return to the first-team.

According to Manchester Evening News, the former Southampton man is expecting to be fit for the start of the new campaign despite playing for England with cracked ribs and a wrist injury.

The Red Devils’ staff haven’t assessed his knocks yet (as he’s due to arrive at Carrington on Monday) but Shaw himself feels confident of being ready for the season opener.

The Peoples Person last covered news on the talented defender when The Telegraph first reported his injuries and it appeared back then that he could miss a few games for the club.

Shaw is undoubtedly one of Manchester United’s key players and supporters were hoping he could continue his outstanding relationship with Marcus Rashford on the field.

Unfortunately it seems even the academy product could be out of action for the new season as he may be forced into addressing some long-term injuries he’s been ignoring.

Rashford may require surgery on his shoulder while it is understood he’s been troubled by a foot injury too.

Luckily Shaw’s ribs and wrist should heal on their own and unless he’s been unlucky, he should feature in the first-team soon.

Former United legend hails new world-class signing

Manchester United’s legendary former full-back Patrice Evra has hailed Raphael Varane as a ‘top, top signing’ for the Red Devils.

Speaking to The Athletic, Evra spoke glowingly of his fellow Frenchman who is, like Harry Maguire, 28, the prime age for centre-backs.

Evra compared Varane to his former teammate and other United great, Rio Ferdinand:

“Varane reminds me of Rio Ferdinand,” said Evra. “Great with the ball, great in the air. He’s the complete centre-back. I remember my first game with the French national team and I was so impressed.”

United came very close to signing Varane from Lens as an 18 year-old and it is well documented that Sir Alex Ferguson thought highly of him.

In his Brentford pre-season friendly post-match interview last night, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer mentioned United’s long-standing interest and that the club had now captured Varane’s services but at the other end of his career instead.

Evra continued by mentioning Varane’s ability on the ball, which is a highly sought after attribute in modern centre-backs:
“He was so young yet so good with the ball, so fast and his anticipation was perfect. He’s calm with the ball and he can score too. It’s a top, top signing for Manchester United.”

Varane’s passing ability might even be somewhat underrated ahead of the transfer, pending a medical.

With the way many teams press high and smother midfields nowadays, defenders are often relied upon to break the lines and be almost deep playmakers.

Varane is an excellent passer off both feet. His passing often leads to shot creation and he is excellent at switching the play with long balls to the wings.

United’s attacking full-backs, in particular, Luke Shaw, will surely benefit from this. If Evra was still playing for United, he would have too.

Completing a strong back-four, Varane will immediately become United’s best passing defender, even though Maguire is also excellent in that department.

'Quiet leader': Why Varane's arrival doesn't threaten this United centre-back

Manchester United star Victor Lindelof spot in the first-team is reportedly safe if he wants it to be, despite the expected arrival of Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.

The Swedish centre-back was one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s most reliable men last season, as he featured heavily alongside Harry Maguire.

Given how the English defender was purchased for a sensational fee, many expected it would mean the end of Lindelof’s career at United.

However, it seems Solskjaer doesn’t have any real plans to move the former Benfica man on and he could still play a role if he chooses.

The centre-back department has suddenly become a little unstable following Varane’s arrival and it’s obvious some player’s futures need to be cleared up.

According to The Athletic, while Lindelof is the one expected to make way for the World Cup winner in the starting XI, it doesn’t necessarily mean he will leave the club entirely.

It’s believed the Red Devils feel he’s a “quiet leader” and so aren’t keen on seeing him leave so that depth remains.

A source told them: “Varane gives us three top-centre backs and depth if one gets injured. There are likely to be no issues if he plays whereas there were issues if Bailly plays over the other two.

“He also gives us a top-end level to play five at the back. We wouldn’t expect it but it’s a good option.”

The Peoples Person last covered Lindelof news when his form for his country at the Euros was being discussed, as statistics had shown he was putting in top performances.

His solid displays didn’t go unnoticed and many wondered why the club weren’t helping him replicate that type of talent at Old Trafford.

Nonetheless, it seems the only reason Lindelof will leave Manchester United is if he wants to due to an expected lack of minutes and not because Solskjaer wants him to go.

Romano Update: United 'love' French midfield wonderkid

Manchester United ‘love’ Eduardo Camavinga according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who is a reliable source for transfer news.

Romano updated his followers via Youtube and it seems United remain engaged with the 18 year-old’s club Rennes.

The Red Devils have been linked with the young French midfielder throughout the summer and it is believed that the third of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s desired ‘three world-class signings’ is a defensively sound midfielder.

Camavinga certainly falls into that category. He averages over 4 tackles per game in Ligue 1, one of the highest tackle rates for midfielders in Europe.

United had previously been in the market for a top, young midfield talent and came close to signing Jude Bellingham from Birmingham City only to lose that transfer battle with Borussia Dortmund.

Instead, Camavinga would no doubt be seen as a similarly prodigious talent by United.

However, reports have suggested that Camavinga has a preference for La Liga if he is to move on from Rennes.

He is now in the final year of his contract and Rennes would most likely prefer to sell him for a fee of around £30 million this summer, instead of losing him for free next year.

But United have not escalated their interest as yet and are focusing on deciding on player loans and the future of Paul Pogba before moving definitively for a midfielder.

Solskjaer and the United transfer team have also expressed interest in Wolves’ Ruben Neves and Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka as other potential targets.

With initial contacts and groundwork laid, they will have several options if a first preference falls through.

Solskjaer has some big internal decisions to make this week.  After those, the move for a midfielder will likely happen.

Transfer coup: Teenage wonderkid leaves Liverpool to join Man United

Manchester United have completed the signing of Liverpool youngster Ethan Ennis.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Ennis rejected the Merseyside club’s contract proposal to join the Red Devils.

Liverpool were keen to keep hold of the talented midfielder and offered him a scholarship contract earlier this summer.

United owe Liverpool a development fee, a statute of the English game which allows the club who honed a talent to receive some benefit.

Ennis confirmed the transfer on Tuesday by posting a picture of himself at Old Trafford on Instagram.

The caption read: “I am delighted to announce that I have signed for Manchester United. Grateful for this opportunity, can’t wait to get started.”

Not too many players have crossed the divide between Man United and Liverpool down the years.

Only nine players in history had transferred directly from one club to another, with the last being back in 1964 when Phil Chisnall moved from Man Utd to Liverpool for £25,000.

The 16-year-old from Runcorn broke into Liverpool’s youth team last season, scoring five goals in eight games for the academy.

He played a crucial role in their journey to the FA Youth Cup final, netting thrice.

In their first-round tie against Sutton, the teenager came off the bench to score a 15-minute hat-trick.

Manager Bridge-Wilkinson said post-match: “Ethan is an Under-16 player, and it was a great evening for him.”

“It was his debut in the FA Youth Cup, and he got three goals!”

Ennis joins many exciting young players at the Man United academy, including the likes of Charlie McNeill, Joe Hugill, Marc Jurado and Isak Hansen-Aaroen.

The signing would fit in nicely with Man United’s youth recruitment strategy, which became quite evident ever since the appointment of Nicky Butt as head of the academy back in 2016.

Since 2019, the club has recruited 19 players from all across Europe to swell its academy ranks. All barring three of them were 16 years of age when joining.

The goal is to develop top-class talent within the academy with a future pathway into the first team.

Ennis can be a part of this special project and, with his potential, can grow into one of the finest midfielders in the country.

Arsenal propose major part-exchange to sign 'elite striker'

Arsenal propose major part-exchange to sign ‘elite striker’

Arsenal are attempting to be creative in their attempts to attract an ‘elite striker’ to north London this summer, according to Football Insider.

The report claims Arsenal are desperate to land Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez this summer but the £75million price-tag is too much for the Gunners to put forward, so they are hoping a part-exchange deal, involving Hector Bellerin will be enough to do a deal.

Inter lost Achraf Hakimi to PSG earlier this summer and are looking for a top-class replacement at right-back – Bellerin would undoubtedly fit the bill.

Martinez, only 23, would hopefully be a long-term investment, and one with a proven eye for goal. The Argentine international netted 19 times last season alongside prolific strike partner Romelu Lukaku.

Arsenal have seemingly got their top target defender quite literally through the door (of their London Colney training ground).

Brighton and England star Ben White was pictured at Arsenal’s training ground, most likely for a medical and talks on Wednesday ahead of a deal worth around £50million being confirmed.

Journalist Chris Wheatley shared the post of Tweet of White seemingly driving away from London Colney and it has since been shared extensively across Twitter.

The transfer would represent a major in for manager Mikel Arteta as he look to re-shape the Gunners before the first league fixture against Brentford on August 13th.

More to come: Solskjaer says he is not finished in transfer window

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that the club’s transfer business is not over this summer.

United are set to complete the signing of centre back Raphael Varane from Real Madrid shortly, having already confirmed the arrival of right winger Jadon Sancho.

But speaking at last night’s pre-season friendly with Brentford at Old Trafford, Solskjaer said there was more to come.

‘I’m hopeful that there might be a little more business done by us before the summer window closes, while I’m also mindful that a lot of our squad members underwent great development on loan last term,’ the boss said.

Many journalists have suggested that the positions in which the manager is still hoping to strengthen are in central midfield and at right back.

Eduardo Camavinga, Saul Niguez, Declan Rice and Ruben Neves have all been linked with the former role and Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier with the latter.

However, the second part of Solskjaer’s comment, that he is ‘mindful that a lot of our squad members underwent great development on loan last term’, suggests that one of two of last season’s loanees have done enough to earn a stay in the senior squad this term.

One of those may have been Diogo Dalot, who performed well for AC Milan and who would fulfil that need for a second right back, although arguably the Portuguese did little to further his cause against Brentford last night after making a couple of bad errors, one of which led to Brentford’s second goal.

Solskjaer is also giving Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard plenty of game time during pre-season and may decide to give either or both another shot in the senior squad. Lingard seems well ahead of Pereira in that department, despite the latter’s wonder goal for the Red Devils in last night’s game.

There have also been suggestions that Solskjaer will have to sell before he buys any more players. These three – Dalot, Lingard and Pereira – are probably among the most saleable at the moment.

Nemanja Matic, Axel Tuanzebe, Daniel James, Brandon Williams and Eric Bailly are all arguably surplus to requirements now, as is David de Gea, if reports are to be believed that Solskjaer has chosen Dean Henderson to be his number one next term.

However, some of those – especially Matic and De Gea, could be hard to shift given their long and lucrative contracts, which other clubs would struggle to match.
