Ed Woodward gets a tongue lashing from angry United supporters at fans' forum

Outgoing executive vice chairman Ed Woodward was brave enough to show his face at Manchester United’s fan forum after the failed European Super League project, but his words sounded hollow and insincere.

‘I know that you will feel angry and let down by the lack of consultation and by the way the proposal failed to recognise the vital principle of open competition. Proper discussion would have helped us avoid the mistake we made,’ he said.

‘While there would have been a substantial increase in solidarity payments from the leading clubs to the rest of the pyramid across Europe, we fully accept that there were fundamental elements which were badly misjudged.

‘As Joel [Glazer] said last week, we failed to give enough weight to the essential principles and traditions of sporting merit which are so vital to football.

‘We want to restate our commitment to those traditions. I can assure you that we have learned our lesson from the events of the past week, and we do not seek any revival of the Super League plans.

‘We will now continue working with the rest of the football community to address the long-term challenges facing the game.

‘We will be listening closely to your feedback today, and we’ll be taking it away for consideration as we review how we can engage more effectively with you in future.’

A statement crafted by MUST – the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust, was then read out to Woodward explaining how the fanbase felt about recent events. The fact that this, the fans’ contribution, was not included on the club site alongside that of woodward immediately makes a mockery of the promise of openness and transparency that was promised by the board. Some of the text of the long statement included:

‘We are disgusted, embarrassed and angry at the owner’s actions in relation to the planning, formation and announcement of the European Super League.

‘Once again this clearly demonstrates that the club’s owners are only interested in maximising their own profits and do not care about or respect the views of Manchester United fans.

‘The complete lack of engagement with fans, our players and manager is a gross mishandling of club affairs and one which we cannot forgive. It was an attack on fans and on clubs across the whole of football and we have simply had enough.

‘Joel Glazer’s subsequent apology is not accepted. Actions speak louder than words and he and his family have shown time and again that their sole motivation is personal profit at the expense of our football club.

‘Addressing the financial challenges some of the clubs involved face is no justification for this proposal … For Manchester United we would remind you that £1 billion has gone out of the club in the last sixteen years to fund the ownership of this club.

‘We … request you agree to:

‘1. Willingly and openly engage and promote the government initiated fan-led review of football and use this as an opportunity to rebalance the current ownership structure in the favour of supporters and not approach this review defensively to fight for the status quo

‘2. Appoint independent directors to the board whose sole purpose is to protect the interest of the club as a football club, not its shareholders and their focus on profits over results

‘3. Work with the Manchester United Supporters Trust and supporters more broadly to put in place a share scheme that is accessible to all and that has shares with the same voting rights as those held by the Glazer family

‘4. Commit to full consultation with season ticket holders on any significant changes to the future of our club, including the competitions we play in

‘5. Provide a commitment by Joel Glazer that any costs incurred in relation to the creation of, or withdrawal from, the European Super League will be funded solely by the Glazer family and not by the club itself. We note that the Kroenke family have already made this commitment to Arsenal fans.

‘We request a written response to the above points within seven days.’

It will certainly be interesting to see whether Woodward and the Glazer family respond in any way to the request. It seems unlikely to say the least.

A protest march demanding change will be held on Sunday at 2pm on the Old Trafford forecourt, with the Liverpool match following at 4.30pm.

'Massive': Solskjaer concerned that fourth place may not be enough for Champions League

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stressed that his side must not take their eye off the Premier League now that a Europa League final is just 90 minutes away.

Speaking at last night’s press conference ahead of Sunday’s tie with Liverpool, the boss made it clear that despite having a healthy twelve point lead over fifth-placed West Ham with only five games left to play, circumstances could arise that could still put Champions League qualification in jeopardy.

‘Sometimes top four is not even secure,’ Solskjaer noted.

‘Arsenal and Chelsea could still win their respective tournaments and not be top four [in which case fourth would drop into the Europa League], so we have just got to do our job and get into the Champions League ourselves.’

The scenario Solskjaer is describing is if Arsenal win the Europa League and Chelsea win the Champions League, but finish outside of the top four of the Premier League. As a maximum of five teams can qualify for the UCL and the previous winners of both tournaments qualify automatically, it would mean that whoever finishes in fourth place in the Premier League would drop down to the Europa.

However, that still would leave United needing only one more win to secure third place, all but mathematically.

A win against Liverpool would not only achieve that, but it would also ensure United finish ahead of their old rivals for the first time since 2017/18 and put a massive dent in the visitors’ own hopes of Champions League qualification.

‘A win over Jurgen Klopp’s side – or even a draw – would also mean the Merseysiders mathematically cannot finish above us this season, which hasn’t happened since 2017/18.

However, Ole isn’t concerning himself with that particular fact, or with putting a dent in Liverpool’s hopes of gaining a Champions League place. It could potentially leave them seven points adrift of fourth with only four games left.

But Solskjaer did not seem concerned about that aspect.

‘We go out there, we are just thinking about winning ourselves. What that does to Liverpool can’t be of our concern,’ the boss said.

‘Throughout the season you have games you look forward to and this Liverpool game is one of the biggest of the season. It doesn’t matter if we are first or second, third or fourth. No matter, this is a massive, massive game.’

Brilliant news as world class striker agrees to contract extension at United - report

Edinson Cavani must have read The Peoples Person’s article this morning which demanded that United do everything they can to persuade him to sign a one-year extension to his Old Trafford contract.

According to breaking news from ESPN Spain, the Uruguayan has decided to stay and an official announcement will be made next week.

‘@ ECavaniOfficial has decided to continue at @ManUtd,’ ESPN’s Moises Llorens tweeted.

‘Next week it should be made official.

‘He had doubts, but despite the interest of @BocaJrsOficial, he will fulfill the contract.’

It is excellent news for United and a significant piece in what will prove to be a unique transfer window to come. With agent Mino Raiola keen to move Erling Haaland on this summer, United might have felt forced to move for him even though Dortmund’s price tag would have been astronomical.

Now that Cavani is staying, United can sit back and hope that the Norwegian stays for one more season at Dortmund, after which his £65 million release clause comes into effect.

Also, as was reported here yesterday, with the striker position settled, sources say United will switch their attentions back to the right wing and to Jadon Sancho.

This in itself will have an impact on Haaland; Dortmund will neither need nor want to lose both in one summer, so the fee they get for the England man will almost certainly strengthen their hand to keep hold of the Norwegian.

But above all else, the news means that United can count on a world class striker, one who has broken the curse of the number 7 shirt since Ronaldo left, for another season. That will be music to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ears, as well as those of the fans.

'Get his family whatever they want': fans desperate for United star to stay

Manchester United fans have joined manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in demanding that everything must be done to persuade Edinson Cavani to stay at Old Trafford another year.

Cavani is reportedly undecided about whether to agree to a one-year contract extension as he is to be unsettled in Manchester and keen to return to South America, where Boca Juniors have an offer on the table for him.

A flawless centre-forward’s performance against Roma last night, in which he scored two goals, provided two assists and drew a penalty, underlined the Uruguayan’s importance to United even more, as Solskjaer revealed after the game.

‘He knows I’d love to have him for another year,’ the boss said.

‘I understand it’s been very difficult for him. I’ve promised him Old Trafford and Manchester is a different place with fans in.

‘We must try to get that feeling that Manchester is a good place to live. I’m doing my best. Hopefully nights like this help him see himself here for another year.

‘We don’t have to sell it to him — it’s about how he feels coming in every day; the team we are creating, he’s part of it.

‘But he has to feel it, scoring those goals with fans. We’ve got the best fans, he’s a goalscorer and there’s nothing better than celebrating in front of them at the Stretford End.’

Fans agreed.

‘Give him £100k a week extra I don’t care,’ one fan tweeted. ‘His help this season alone was worthy of a £150 million price tag. Not only is he performing on the pitch, he brings so much leadership and knowledge to the dressing room, his workrate is insane.’

‘I’m on my knees for him to stay man, what a player he’s been for us recently. Really turned it up a notch in the past month or two’ said another.

Others said.

‘Be a travesty if he doesn’t get to experience a full Old Trafford. We need to keep him.’

‘Ole’s system comes alive with an out and out number nine and Cavani has shown it time and again! Keep him or improve on him!’

‘Get his family whatever they want. We can’t replace such a player.’

‘Definitely needs to be here one more season, the crowd will go absolutely nuts for him.’

Solskjaer channels his inner Ferguson with sensational post match fighting comments

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lept to the defence of his team following the remarkable performance vs Roma.

The legendary Norwegian appeared to channel his inner Sir Alex Ferguson by inspiring his team to a sensational second-half display.

United headed into the break 2-1 down but finished the clash 6-2 in what was an iconic European night at Old Trafford.

Whatever Solskjaer said at half-time certainly worked, with Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani grabbing a brace each.

Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba also netted an effort each in what was a stunning attacking performance that was thoroughly deserved.

Solskjaer is certainly spoilt for choices in certain positions and it is a difficult job finding a balance in terms of structure and yet having to fit all his best players into the same starting XI.

Against Roma, Pogba and Bruno both featured to devastating effect, both playing key roles in the big semi-final victory.

The World Cup winner started on the left-wing to accomodate the former Sporting Lisbon man in attacking-midfield.

Pogba’s ability was not diminished either and Solskjaer may have stumbled upon a brilliant formula for the team’s long-term future.

With the season coming to a close, there’s no better time than now to have found the perfect way to bring the best out of his team.

Masterclass: Man United star puts Roma to the sword

Manchester United star Paul Pogba certainly repaid Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith in him with a stunning performance vs Roma.

The talented Frenchman played on the left-wing and it didn’t show in the slightest as he helped his teammates dominate against the Italian side.

Pogba has had his fair share of critics and with his contract running up next year, it’s left lots of room for rumours.

Solskjaer must want the World Cup winner to stay but it seems he’s taking his time to think things through for now.

If United are to enjoy any long or short-term success, Pogba will need to be involved as the team are a far different side when he’s in it.

The Red Devils needed to find a way to squeeze Bruno Fernandes and Pogba into the same XI and it’s safe to say they’ve successfully done so.

With the former Juventus man higher up the pitch as well, he’s helped his side dominate from a more influential position in terms of goal contributions.

In midfield, Pogba was forced to sit deep and dictate play rather than get into the opponent’s box but on the left-wing he can do a mixture of both.

5 chances created, 5 goal involvements: flawless football from United's main man

Edinson Cavani put in a sensational performance for Manchester United this evening as they crushed Roma 6-2 at Old Trafford in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final.

Cavani’s whole performance was imbued with swagger and panache and he was at the heart of five of the six goals that United scored.

His superb pass set up the first goal for Bruno Fernandes, then he added the second himself just after half-time with a right-footed shot into the top corner of the net. He then scored again in the 64th minute.

It was the Uruguayan who drew the foul in the 71st minute that led to Bruno Fernandes’ coolly taken penalty and Cavani again in the 86th minute setting up substitute Mason Greenwood with a world-class cross-field pass with the outside of his boot.

In all, Cavani achieved 89% pass accuracy and had seven shots of which four were on target. He created five chances and made four recoveries in addition to his five goal involvements.

With reports claiming that the 34-year-old is homesick and could leave United this summer to return to South America, tonight’s game was a complete demonstration of why the Red Devils cannot allow that to happen. On this performance, it is clear that the club must do whatever it takes to keep him at Old Trafford for that extra season.

Bruno Fernandes instrumental in Manchester United’s big win vs Roma

Manchester United have their talisman Bruno Fernandes to thank for their destruction of Roma in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final tie.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men completed a remarkable comeback win, crushing the Italian giants 6-2 and the Portuguese magician was central to it all.

United started off the match brilliantly by taking the lead early but somehow found themselves heading into the break 2-1 down.

Whatever Solskjaer said at half-time inspired his players perfectly as they ran riot in the second half to all but secure their spot in the final.

The Red Devils needed someone to step up and it’s clear they could rely on the ever-reliable Bruno to lead them to glory.

At a time when it could be argued Bruno’s form has dipped, he stepped up at a crucial time to potentially drag his team into a final.

Often accused by rival fans as not being a big-game player, the former Sporting Lisbon man certainly silenced his critics.

United definitely need Bruno fit and firing as the season comes to a close and they look to secure some silverware as well as a second-place finish.

With Paul Pogba playing on the same field, Solskjaer may have found the perfect way to fit them both in without sacrificing either of their talents.

Three incredible performances as United run riot over Roma - player ratings

Manchester United beat AS Roma 6-2 tonight in the first leg of the Europa League semi final at Old Trafford. Here are our player ratings for the game:

(A score of 6 is around average.)

David de Gea 5 – Never came off his line. Organisation lacking compared to Henderson. His woeful penalty record continues.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Better going forward, but being caught stranded upfield was one of the reasons for Roma’s second goal.

Victor Lindelof 5 – Must take some responsibility for Roma’s second, and the gaps between him and Maguire reared their ugly head too often again.

Harry Maguire 5 – Another player who was partially responsible for the second goal and played Dzeko onside in the second half which was lucky not to be punished.

Luke Shaw 6 – Excellent again going forward but must be at least partly responsible for that Roma second when he failed to keep the line.

Scott McTominay 5 – Didn’t do much to protect the defence, didn’t do much to support the attack, just anonymous yet again.

Fred 5 – Ditto the above. McFred works so tirelessly but it takes two of them playing to do the work of one holding midfielder.

Marcus Rashford 6 – Quiet game from Marcus. Ran down a few dead ends and still looking like he’s only 75% fit.

Bruno Fernandes 9.5 – Back to his best. Brilliant display from Bruno. Two goals, two assists and an almost telepathic connection with Cavani.

Paul Pogba 9 – Was involved in nearly everything positive that United did. Ruled the show along with Bruno and Cavani. Unlucky to concede the penalty. Superb overall.

Edinson Cavani 9.5 – You will not see many better centre-forward performances than that. Two goals, two sublime assists … a joy to watch.

Substitutes

Mason Greenwood 8 – Improved the right wing straight away when he came on and buried the tie with a classy finish.

Nemaja Matic 7 – Looked a class above Fred when he came on for the Brazilian for the last few minutes.

Juan Mata 6 – Had little chance to affect the game.

United hope to slash top target's asking price in half under one condition

Edinson Cavani’s future could be the key to deciding whether Jadon Sancho joins Manchester United this summer, according to 90min.com.

The Uruguayan striker was signed on a one-year renewable deal in which both parties have the option to continue. And while United are believed to be keen to extend the deal, Cavani has been reported to be hankering after a return to South America.

Reporter Jamie Spencer claims that if Cavani leaves, the Red Devils’ priority for this summer’s transfer window will be a striker. But if the 34-year-old can be persuaded to stay, Sancho will once again be the club’s top priority.

‘90min understands [United] believe their best option is to sign a new winger and have Cavani stay on,’ Spencer says.

‘Jadon Sancho remains their first choice for the position.

‘The Old Trafford club also remain hopeful they can persuade Cavani to stay for another season.

So far, so good. But then comes the ouch.

‘United believe they could secure a deal for potentially even just half the previous asking price because of the circumstances. The potential issue of Dortmund missing out on Champions League qualification for next season will only hurt their finances and force their hand.’

The suggestion that United believe they could land Sancho for around £50 million – half of last summer’s minimum asking price – seems totally unrealistic but also, coincidentally, around the maximum transfer budget that was reportedly agreed by Joel Glazer and Ed Woodward last time round.

This means that if Cavani stays, this summer could be a replica of last, with United and Dortmund locked for months over negotiations in another round of whose d—k is the biggest, something that will not go down at all well with United fans and which could disrupt Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preparations for the new season.

From Italy: United to battle Chelsea for free transfer of world-class star

When the dust settles after the battle between Dean Henderson and David de Gea over Manchester United’s goalkeeping gloves, the winner could find that he will be having to compete all over again with Gigio Donnarumma.

The AC Milan star, widely considered at 22 to be one of the best keepers in the world, has reached an impasse with his current club over a contract extension and could be set to leave for free in the forthcoming window.

Both United and Chelsea have been linked with the Italian international and the Rossoneri have now given the player an ultimatum – sign now or walk, according to Tuttosport.

‘Thirty days. Milan, albeit not in writing, have given an ultimatum to Gigio Donnarumma and above all to his agent Mino Raiola: by the end of the [Serie A] championship on 23 May, the goalkeeper and his agent must give a definitive answer to the renewal proposal contract sent some time ago,’ Tuttosport explains.

‘The Rossoneri do not want to wait any longer. At the end of the championship Donnarumma will join the national side for the European Championships and certainly will not have the time and mind to negotiate.

‘At the same time, Milan will have to begin to concretely set up for next season and decide at that point whether to go for Mike Maignan, the 25 year old goalkeeper from Lille.

‘After several phone calls and video conferences with Raiola, AC Milan put €8 million [£7m – £135k per week] on the table for 5 years.

‘[This] would allow Donnarumma to be both the highest paid footballer in Milan and the Italian with the highest salary in Serie A.’

Tuttosport claims that Raiola has cocked a snook at Milan’s offer and has not even responded to it. The former pizza chef is reported to be demanding €12 million (£200k per week), although could settle for £168k per week, an amount that ‘he could receive – or has already been offered? – from some clubs around Europe.’

‘The club, however, has made its offer and will not move from there, there will be no upward auctions,’ Tuttosport continues.

‘Donnarumma has always made it clear that he wants to stay at Milan, but in practice he has not yet forced his hand with Raiola to accept the club’s proposal.’

Dealing with Raiola yet again is unlikely to be something that United will want to do after the circus created around Paul Pogba and Erling Haaland. On the other hand, a free transfer of one of the best keepers in the world for a contract less than half the value of De Gea’s could be seen as a no-brainer for any club worth its salt.

United’s new director of football lays down the law on transfer strategy

354

Manchester United’s new director of football John Murtough has opened up on what kind of transfers fans can expect moving forward.

The club have made a couple of restructuring decisions in terms of staff and what’s been going on behind the scenes and it meant two new positions opened up.

Darren Fletcher was promoted to technical director as part of the changes and Nicky Butt left his role as head of first-team development.

Some feel the latter departed the club due to clashes with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and given how he spoke out against the formation of a European Super League, it’s possible those rumours contained some truth.

Fans are curious to see what the new appointments will mean for United’s summer transfer dealings and time will tell whether it will yield the right results or not.

According to Manchester Evening News, Murtough said: “The recruitment department need to focus on bringing in players for tomorrow, those who have potential and for today, those who are ready to play for the first team now.

“The scouting team work closely with Ole to produce options for consideration based on the type of profile which Ole feels that the team needs. Ole has a veto, because as a club we will not sign a player that a manager doesn’t want.

“The club has always backed its manager in the transfer market. It’s evident from what’s gone on over the last two or three seasons that there has been a structured and disciplined approach to player recruitment.

“The transfer market will be challenging in the next 12 months but when the right players are available, which fit our profile, for the right values, will be in and around those opportunities as and when they arise.”

It seems Manchester United’s potential strategy will be to make long-term bargain buys with the occasional major transfer sprinkled in.

It wouldn’t be farfetched to assume fans should expect more Amad-type signings than regular Jadon Sancho deals, particularly after the impact of the global health crisis.

Murtough certainly has a lot to prove in his new position and will have the spotlight on him from now on to deliver the type of players needed for long-term success.

Man United left in dangerous limbo over key player's future

Manchester United have reportedly made no movement yet to clear up Edinson Cavani’s future according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

The experienced Uruguayan appears to be no closer to either leaving or staying at the club than he was roughly a month ago.

Cavani’s father had stated back then that his son wants to return to South America to be closer to his family and has no interest in staying in England.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has still let his feelings known publicly, insisting he would love for the former PSG man to stay.

However, it seems no official decisions have been made yet, leaving United in an unwanted limbo over Cavani’s future and the striker position.

#mufc have not received any official or final position from Cavani yet, so #mufc board are still waiting to have a new meeting at the end of the season with Cavani to decide together about the future.

Recent rumours have claimed Manchester United are looking for a striker this summer but there are no clear indications if it’s in replacement of Cavani or in addition to him.

If the prolific forward stays and Anthony Martial is presumably still deemed as a striker by Solskjaer then it could mean too much competition for one spot.

If Cavani leaves then fans would be getting what they wanted with a strong attacking force but they will lose out on his ability and experience.

Man United fans told who the 'biggest priority' is this summer

Manchester United have reportedly not given up on a centre-back signing despite handing Eric Bailly a new deal but it has aided them in their bid to sign a striker.

The Ivorian international was rewarded with a new contract as his old one was getting close to running out and his future seemed up in the air.

United nipped the issue in the bud but fans weren’t all too happy with the decision as the club handed a four year deal to an injury prone 27 year old.

Whether or not the club will feel validated, time will tell and it seems they haven’t given up on a new centre-back just yet.

Logic would dictate it means the Red Devils would only sign a new centre-back if the appropriate player pops up for the appropriate price, rather than forcing the issue and splashing big.

A striker being the club’s priority suggests they feel Edinson Cavani is leaving and a world beater in that position would be needed.

The People’s Person covered a report on Tuesday that Bailly’s new deal will make it easier for Manchester United to go all out on a striker like Erling Haaland or pursue other attackers such as Jadon Sancho or Jack Grealish.

Given all the corroboration across the board, it looks like this is the club’s new transfer strategy, though some fans might feel Dominic Calvert-Lewin isn’t the stellar signing they need at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer delivers brilliant fitness news ahead of Roma clash

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Marcus Rashford should be fit to face AS Roma in the Europa League semi-final first leg at the Stadio Olimpico, Rome, tomorrow.

Speaking at today’s press conference ahead of tomorrow’s game, the boss confirmed that the England man is over the worst of his recent struggles with a foot injury.

‘Marcus, we’ve managed him and we’ve had to manage him quite a while really,’ the boss said.

‘Last year he had his back, then his shoulder, which he’s recovered really well from and I think he’s gone through the worst of his foot as well.

‘And he almost played a full game against Leeds, he’s available for selection tomorrow and I think he’s happy with his progress.’

Solskjaer also confirmed that there were no other injury concerns ahead of the game, saying ‘we didn’t lose anyone after the Leeds game, which was a great preparation for us.’

Luke Shaw was also speaking at the press conference and confirmed that he will play, with Alex Telles, who is usually used in Europa League fixtures at left back, almost certain to be the one to make way.

The fact that Shaw confirmed his own participation was a source of amusement to the manager, who quipped ‘I was going to ask Luke if he’s picked the team already.’

Tomorrow’s match could see United face old boys Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, both of whom are fit again after injury. Former City man Edin Dzeko will lead the line for the Italians but former Chelsea star Pedro will be missing with injury.

The game kicks off at 8pm tomorrow (Thursday).

'Frustrated' United midfield star pushing to leave at end of season - report

Jesse Lingard has decided against returning to Manchester United at the end of this season and will push for a permanent move to West Ham.

The Academy graduate did not feature in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans in the earlier part of the season, being limited to just a handful of cup games before being snapped up on loan by the Hammers in January.

Since then his form has been exceptional. The 28-year-old has scored nine goals and registered four assists in just 11 games. He has also been called back into the England squad and has even been thriving in the centre-forward role for David Moyes, a position in which he had only ever played four times before.

And according to Eurosport, Lingard is enjoying himself so much in London that he has chosen to stay rather than return to Old Trafford.

Jesse Lingard is almost certain to push for a permanent move from Manchester United this summer,’ the outlet says.

‘His loan agreement with West Ham United ends after this season but it is understood his new lease of life in London is convincing him that it might be time to leave Old Trafford for good.

‘Lingard was frustrated and unimpressed by the lack of faith Ole Gunnar Solskjaer showed in him before letting him out on loan in January.

‘West Ham have tried to accelerate a decision from United over a full-time move, given his brilliant form, but United do not want to make a decision until the summer. West Ham know he is happy at the club and are convinced that if they qualify for Europe he will be happy to explore a long stay.’

Moyes has already made it clear that he would like to keep Lingard at the club but the price tag could be the only stumbling block. Transfermarkt.com values him at just £13 million and while the Hammers would probably stretch to nearer £20 million, that could still fall short of United’s valuation, which is believed to be closer to £30 million.

United’s interest in the Hammers’ holding midfielder Declan Rice could provide a solution if a player-plus-cash deal can be agreed.

4-2-3-1: United will breeze past Roma with this superb line-up

Manchester United should be almost at full strength for tomorrow’s Europa League semi-final first leg tie with Roma.

Apart from long-term absentees Anthony Martial and Phil Jones, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to have few other concerns, with Marcus Rashford’s ongoing ankle problem the only known issue.

The manager will provide a news update at his press conference this lunchtime but given all is well, he is likely to field what he believes is his strongest side for this game despite the small matter of a Premier League tie with Liverpool awaiting the Red Devils on Sunday.

David de Gea would seem to now be the Europa League keeper and should keep his place in goal, which means Dean Henderson will drop to the bench.

One possible question mark is the left back position. Alex Telles is usually given the nod in Europa games while in-form Luke Shaw is rested, but as it’s crunch time now it is more likely that the boss will stick with the England man.

Despite an underwhelming performance at Leeds, Scott McTominay and Fred will probably occupy the twin holding midfield positions as usual. With Bruno Fernandes in the hole and Edinson Cavani up front, this leaves the two wings up for grabs, with Rashford, Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood all in contention.

If Rashford is fully fit, the manager will no doubt pick him and Pogba, with the unfortunate Greenwood dropping to the bench. This would see Rashford playing on the right and the Frenchman on the left.

A youthful bench will also include Amad, Shola Shoretire and Anthony Elanga. Hannibal has also been training with the first team but is ineligible for the ‘B’ list for Europa League games.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted line-up for the game:

16 year-old Norwegian wonderkid weaves Man United vital win

Manchester United’s under 18s started the day in a good position at the top of the Premier League North table, but the pressure to win was on, with rivals Manchester City only two points behind.

Sunderland, meanwhile, were bottom and looking to cause an upset.

The home side started the game well, scrapping and winning duels in midfield. United were given an early scare when a long ball was played from defence to attack and center back Ryan Bennett’s pass back to the keeper was short and was latched on to by Sunderland striker, Harry Gardner. His prod past United goalkeeper, Dermot Mee, rolled just wide.

Sunderland’s early intensity lessened, however, and United passed themselves into the game more.

On the 14th minute, Charlie McNeill scored his 20th goal of the season after 16 year-old Norwegian, Isak Hansen-Aaroen carried the ball from his own half at pace, from the right of midfield inside, and played it into the run of Alvaro Fernandez from left back. The Spaniard squared it to Hansen-Aaroen, whose glanced shot was cleared off the line, only to fall to McNeill at the back post. McNeill smashed it into the roof of the net.

For a period after the goal, United passed it short well and controlled possession with Hansen-Aaroen, Dillon Hoogewerf and McNeill heavily involved but Sunderland pushed back and started to create chances.

On the 25th minute, midfielder, Caden Kelly picked the ball up in space on the left, just outside United’s box, and hit a strong whipped strike on target. The shot was tipped over by Mee.

United’s winger Emile Forson nearly scored in the 34th minute, arriving into the box and getting on the end of Martin Svidersky’s cross. His header was just over.

A minute later, Hoogewerf received an elbow from his own man and went down for treatment. After the stoppage, the game became scrappy again.
Forson nearly had a goal again on the stroke of half-time. He put the ball in the net, from a good run in behind and cross from McNeill, but it was flagged just offside.

The second half started more comfortably for United than the first. Their midfield three of Charlie Savage, Svidersky and Hansen-Aaroen moved it around well and in the 50th minute, McNeill nearly had another.  Another good run and cross from Fernandez from the left, the ball bounced before arriving to McNeill. He wasn’t able to steer his close-range header on target.

The Red Devils dropped their intensity after that and Sunderland created chances.

Gardener again got in behind and was one-on-one with keeper Mee on the left of the six yard box, but he pulled his shot into the side netting.
United’s captain, Will Fish, pulled off some vital defensive blocks to keep Sunderland out.

On the 68th minute, Zidane Iqbal came on for Forson for United and made a difference.

The game swayed back and forth, however, and Sunderland made the breakthrough in the 70th minute.

They gained territory in United’s half and won a corner; the set piece was well taken. Sunderland’s captain, defender, Josh Baggs was most alive in the box and powered his free-header in, moving towards the near post.

It was a shock for United, but they responded by instantly upping the tempo.

On the 75th minute, after good, quick interplay between Hansen-Aaroen, Iqbal and McNeill, United won a corner. It was met with a good header at the keeper from Fish. Fish struck the rebound at his own man on the ground and the ball deflected fortunately to Fernandez who poked it in in the six yard box. The regained lead was a relief.

Three minutes later, United cemented the points. Hansen-Aaroen and Fernandez were heavily involved again down the left. Fernandez’ whipped cross found Hoogewerf free at the back post and his header went into the top right corner.

Sunderland showed spirit and continued to pressure and create chances at times. Fish cleared one off the line but United also hit the crossbar at the other end.

With a minute to go, Hansen-Aaroen capped off a brilliant performance with a superb solo goal. In space on the right again, McNeill hit a hard, low ball to the edge of Sunderland’s box where Hansen-Aaroen picked it up. He executed a typically nimble dribble through three defenders, shifting it onto his right in the box, and shot low to the keeper’s right and in.

It was a hard fought win in the end, despite the scoreline.

Man United forced to rue past transfer window mistakes ahead of this summer

Manchester United reportedly face quite the battle to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho as the race for his signature heats up.

The sensational Englishman has been on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s radar for a long time and reports of a potential transfer have not quietened down despite the global health and financial crises.

United aren’t expected to make multiple major signings but it’s believed they can spend big on one player, supplemented by other squad fillers.

That one big player seems to be Sancho this summer but it seems it won’t be as straightforward as in the last campaign.

The Red Devils appeared to be the only ones capable of signing the versatile attacker last year but this time around, things are different.

Manchester United might rue their inability to sign Sancho last summer as they opted to not fall prey to Dortmund’s large price tag.

However, if the competition for his signature this year drives his price up anyways then it would seem silly and as though it was all for nothing.

Although Liverpool are keen on Sancho, if they fail to qualify for the Champions League themselves then it’s unlikely he will make the move to them.

Dortmund’s own qualification hopes will definitely play a role in their asking price for the brilliant winger and United will be hoping they fall short this season.

The good and bad news in Man United's latest transfer strategy update

Manchester United fans have been delivered good and bad news involving the likes of Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish after Eric Bailly’s contract extension was made official.

The Ivorian international’s deal was to expire soon and it was clear a decision needed to be made about his future ahead of the summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer chose to hand Bailly a four-year deal, perhaps alongside the new director of football John Murtough and technical director Darren Fletcher.

United fans are hoping for a busy summer after the appointments of those two staff members in particular and it will be interesting to see how they do.

Meanwhile, it seems Bailly’s new deal has freed up some attention and the club are seemingly focussing on Haaland, Sancho and Grealish.

The good news for fans is that it seems the club are going to address a weakness in the team; the bad news is that it seems it will come at the expense of another.

Bailly’s extension shouldn’t have stopped Manchester United’s search for a top centre-back and it’s disappointing that it has to be a one or the other decision in the first place.

At this rate, the club will never be able to truly catch up to covering their weaknesses as they will always be plugging holes instead of ensuring they don’t surface initially.

Unsettled Man United star's future cleared up amid potential departure

Manchester United star Alex Telles has reportedly made a decision on his future at the club amid growing whispers of a potential departure this summer.

Those earlier reports claimed the talented Brazilian wanted out of Old Trafford due to a lack of minutes enforced by Luke Shaw‘s remarkable form this season.

It was understood that Telles was joining as a genuine competitor for first-team football and so was taken aback by how little he’s played.

The attacking left-back was a regular back when he was plying his trade in Portugal, meaning he isn’t used to warming up the bench.

In public Telles hasn’t complained, even praising the competitive relationship he shares with Shaw and it seems that positivity has meant he wants to stay.

In fairness to Telles, he has looked decent when given an opportunity to impress, even playing well on occasion.

Unfortunately for him, Shaw is undroppable at the minute, meaning he will have to step up a level if he wants to dethrone his teammate.

A squad with real depth is something Manchester United fans haven’t wanted for years and the left-back position is certainly something they don’t need to worry about.

It would be a shame when such depth is finally at Old Trafford that one of the players would want to leave so it’s a positive Telles is willing to stay and fight for his place.

Man United edge closer in potential sensational transfer for world-class player

Manchester United may have been given the perfect chance to pounce on Real Madrid’s sensitive situation with Raphael Varane according to reports.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to have the World Cup winner high up on his transfer shortlist but many felt it was an unrealistic deal.

Varane has been at Madrid for the majority of his career now and is a guaranteed and consistent starter for Zinedine Zidane.

On paper there’s no real reason for the talented centre-back to leave but it’s believed he’s not been happy with the attempts to retain his services.

Madrid’s financial struggles have been well documented and it’s something United could play on, even without going over the top for Varane.

The multiple rejected contracts and the decent transfer fee mean it is possible that the Red Devils secure Varane’s signature this summer.

However, there are many factors involved in such a transfer and fans have been burned in the past by Madrid and their apparently unhappy stars who end up signing new deals and staying put anyways.

One reason for why it might not work for Manchester United is if they blow the majority of their budget elsewhere, such as on Jadon Sancho who has been a long-term target as well.

"It's a risk"- Man United fans react to club's latest announcement

Manchester United have made the news of Eric Bailly’s contract extension official and it seems it’s rubbed a few fans the wrong way.

The talented Ivorian’s deal was set to run out soon before this new contract and there were concerns the club could lose him for free.

United have nipped those rumours in the bud by tying Bailly down but it’s left some supporters wondering whether it was a smart decision.

The former Villareal man has had his fair of injuries since arriving at Old Trafford and that has meant he’s never truly been a reliable option over an extended period of time.

The silver lining in the deal is that Bailly could have opted to leave the club but wanted to stay on and repay Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith in him.

Fans would react to this news in a rather disappointed manner:

The concerns from fans are completely natural and Bailly has a lot to do to prove he was worth the gamble Solskjaer took.

It wouldn’t be crazy to think the club may have partly handed the aggressive centre-back a new deal because of a need to protect his value and potentially sell him on for more.

Manchester United have adopted a sell first, buy later transfer policy so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Bailly leave soon regardless of his new deal.

Although it wouldn’t be a surprise if he ended up seeing out his new contract either.

The single positive Man United can take from drab draw with Leeds

Manchester United fans didn’t have too much to shout about in their clash with Leeds United but Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were at least the silver lining in that grey cloud.

The defensive duo have developed remarkably over the course of the season, particularly the former who is definitely gaining plaudits that are well deserved.

Wan-Bissaka was also named the man of the match of the fixture vs Leeds which shows exactly just how the game went.

Although the right-back has his weaknesses, it’s safe to say he’s a far more offensive threat than he has been in the past and as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has pointed out, he can get even better.

The Red Devils have long been lacking serious candidates in the full-back positions so it’s a positive change in recent history that they’re overflowing with talent in that department.

Shaw is more or less the complete full-back and his only task now is to maintain the high level of performances he’s managed through this season.

Wan-Bissaka is less from the finished product but his robustness in one v one situations makes him rather invaluable at times.

The former Crystal Palace man will need to learn from Shaw in terms of what is required from a Manchester United full-back but there certainly are signs he can go on to be a top player.

Swedish billionaire enlists three Arsenal legends to help buy club

Swedish billionaire enlists three Arsenal legends to help buy club

Just over a week has passed since the uproar surrounding the Super League emerged, but talk of outing Arsenal’s owners Stan Kroenke / KSE continues to be a hot topic – the deep unrest is seemingly not going away anytime soon.

According to a report from Sky Sports News on Monday, the co-founder and chief executive of the world’s foremost music streaming service Daniel Ek, has thrown his hat into the conversation to bid for the club should KSE put it up for sale.

On top of this potentially huge news, Ek also wants to draft in legends such as Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira to be part of the process – a smart PR move to get fans instantly on-side.

Ek is worth around £3.38billion and has supposedly been a keen Arsenal fan for many years with his recent post confirming so;

Arsenal’s current ownership revealed mid-last week that they had no intention of selling up at the time and were going to be push to make the fans a bigger part of the conversation.

United poised to take four-year gamble on star player's fitness - report

Eric Bailly is close to agreeing a four-year extension to his Manchester United contract, according to ESPN.

Rumours of the 27-year-old leaving the club had been mounting after a deal had not been agreed with just one year remaining on his current contract.

It was reported that Bailly wanted assurances over his playing time, with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof seemingly the preferred starting partnership of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, ESPN’s sources claim that there has been a breakthrough in negotiations and that the Ivorian is set to sign a four-year extension to his current deal.

‘Sources have told ESPN Bailly is satisfied he will get opportunities if he stays fit,’ ESPN reports.

‘The club have had concerns about his injury record after making just 37 Premier League appearances since the start of the 2017-18 season.’

The report follows another breaking over the weekend which claimed that Luke Shaw is about to be handed a five-year extension with a hefty £40,000 per week pay increase.

But as reported here in regard to Shaw’s extension, the length of contract reported for Bailly makes little sense from United’s perspective.

Bailly has had a horrific injury record and it is surely wreckless of United to give him such a lengthy deal without him first proving his fitness.

This season alone has seen the defender absent with six different injuries or illnesses, including Covid-19.

Many United fans would argue that Bailly is the club’s best centre back, but his constant bad luck injury-wise makes any contract of longer than one or two years a huge gamble for the club.

Bond villain: how Ed Woodward's brilliant Super League plan turned to dust in his hands

Manchester United’s outgoing executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has become embroiled in a political scandal over the last 24 hours following reports that he met with Prime Minister Boris Johnson to seek reassurances that the government would back the European Super League.

The ESL, a closed-shop league of the world’s best sides, fell apart within 72 hours of being announced after Manchester City and Chelsea crumbled under public pressure and pulled out.

Some of that pressure came from Downing Street, with Johnson condemning the proposals immediately they came to light. The PM said ‘It’s not in the interests of football… How can it be right to have a situation in which you create a kind of cartel? … What we want to do first of all is back the FA, back the Premier League and hope that we can thwart this proposal before it goes very much further.’

However, over this weekend a story emerged that Woodward had visited 10 Downing Street and met with Dan Rosenfield, the No10 chief of staff, who gave him assurances that there would be no opposition to the plans.

This has sparked a political row, with shadow Culture Secretary Jo Stevens saying ‘Yet again, Johnson’s integrity and honesty are in question …The public has a right to know what exactly was promised to Manchester United by both officials and the prime minister.

‘If Johnson gave the European Super League his backing and then publicly turned on the plan then the British people deserve a full, clear and immediate explanation and apology.’

So what exactly happened?

According to The Sunday Times’ Caroline Wheeler, sources say that Woodward did indeed meet Rosenfield, who did give him his assurance that it would be safe to go ahead. Unfortunately for Ed, though, the Number 10 man failed to communicate this to the Prime Minister.

‘It is alleged this was done without consulting PM … Woodward went back to people planning SL + effectively said the PM’s chief of staff had given project the green light,’ Wheeler tweeted.

‘Positive noises from Downing Street were understood to have been communicated to those behind the ESL on the Saturday, and was apparently important in the final decision to launch. This has been denied by Ed Woodward.’

Poor Ed. He clearly thought he’d dotted all his i’s and crossed all his t’s. Millions had been paid to lawyers to reassure the plotters that there could be no legal challenge against their proposals. Downing Street had given him their assurance that they would not stand in their way. Woodward must have been thinking, ‘what could possibly go wrong?’

The revelations also make a mockery – as if anyone believed them anyway – of last week’s reports from usually reliable sources such as The Athletic claiming that Woodward was opposed to the whole Super League concept and ‘was not supportive of the scheme, he was obliged to go along with his employers.’ It was Woodward who was at Downing Street, nobody else. It was Woodward who assured UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin that he fully supported the new Champions League, just a day before the ESL was announced, leading the UEFA man to brand him a ‘snake’. It was Woodward’s old firm, JP Morgan, that was financing the whole ESL project.

Far from being an unwilling participant, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that Woodward was the central figure in the whole fiasco, sitting on his big leather chair like a Bond villain plotting the downfall of English football.
