Not just refereeing: Solskjaer reveals what let Man United down vs Chelsea

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed what let the team down in their boring goalless draw vs Chelsea.

The legendary Norwegian opted for a few surprising inclusions in the starting XI as he hoped to leave Stamford Bridge with all three points.

Scott McTominay started despite suffering from an injury and Mason Greenwood was picked to lead the line despite Anthony Martial being fit.

Fans didn’t necessarily have an issue with either decision and in the end, it wasn’t a defining reason for why United couldn’t get the win.

Solskjaer feels a lack of quality is ultimately what caused the result and it’s safe to say that is what was the most obvious.

Interestingly enough, Solskjaer had called for his players to show composure and quality on the ball, asking them to beat Chelsea’s high press and passing out of the defence.

Unfortunately that didn’t happen at all and Manchester United failed to hold onto the ball well, turning over possession frequently and struggling to find the likes of Marcus Rashford or Bruno Fernandes in dangerous areas.

It’s clear Solskjaer’s men have work to do if they want to beat the big teams and while a point in hindsight might look good, fans can’t help but feel like it was an opportunity missed once again.

"It's cheeky"- Solskjaer makes brilliant claim after refereeing error vs Chelsea

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was clearly not impressed with the standard of officiating vs Chelsea and believes certain decisions didn’t go his team’s way due to some outside influences.

The legendary Norwegian watched on as his players dragged their feet to a drab 0-0 draw vs the Blues as their poor record vs the ‘Big Six’ continues.

United have not impressed against the likes of Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City this season, particularly in comparison to last season.

Solskjaer will hope to solve the pattern of issues soon but while he admitted his players could’ve done better in the final third, he made sure to let his unhappiness with the referee be known.

The Red Devils saw their gap to fierce rivals and league leaders City extended to all but end whatever hopes were left for a title challenge.

Solskjaer has consistently hinted and warned that other managers were talking about what was going on with Manchester United a little too often for his liking.

The former prolific striker had hoped that would end the string of poor refereeing but instead, it continued and arguably got worse.

That is why he opted to discuss it this time more honestly and openly, piggybacking on Luke Shaw‘s blast of the referee too.

Man United talisman shocks fans with horrific performance vs Chelsea

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes was perhaps not at his best vs Chelsea but he may have been even worse than initially anticipated.

The Portuguese magician has easily been the club’s talisman since arriving but his performance in the drab draw with the Blues was shockingly below his usual standards.

United overall were pretty poor and it was a continuation of their disappointing form vs big six sides, failing to win against any of their opponents and scoring just one goal.

Rival fans often claim Bruno isn’t a world-class player because of his performances vs big teams but it’s clear to see this is a team issue and not a player issue.

Nonetheless, the former Sporting Lisbon man’s display was not pretty at all and if it were anyone else, they’d probably be subsequently dropped from the starting XI.

Bruno is known for being a risktaker but given how Manchester United couldn’t seem to hold onto the ball, it may have paid off to be a bit more reserved than usual today.

The brilliant playmaker is normally the man who unlocks stubborn defences for Solskjaer’s men but against Chelsea, he probably did more damage than good.

The only positive to consider is that it was an uncharacteristically poor performance and so it’s unlikely fans will see a repeat again.

Luke Shaw blasts referee for stunning revelation after penalty denial

Luke Shaw says he’s very confused as to why Manchester United weren’t given a penalty in this afternoon’s encounter with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The incident happened in the first half when Callum Hudson-Odoi appeared to handle the ball in the area and the VAR called play back a few seconds later.

In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Shaw sensationally admitted he overheard the referee explaining why he had not given the spot kick to Harry Maguire: ‘The referee even said to H [Harry Maguire], I heard him say, “If I say it’s a pen it’s going to cause a lot of talk about it after,” so I don’t know what happened there.’

Shaw also asked why the referee had stopped the game if it was not a penalty. ‘I don’t understand why he’s stopped it, if he was going to stop you’d think that maybe he was going to give a pen, because we had the ball, we was attacking.

‘So it’s confusing with this VAR because if it’s not going to be a pen then they might as well just carry on the game, they might as well not stop the flow of the game’.

The idea that the referee might have decided against giving a penalty for fear of what would be said afterwards – presumably on social media and by journalists and pundits – is troubling and shocking. Quite simply, the referee should call the decision he believes is correct, regardless of how it might be perceived.

It also suggests that Mr Attwell had Jurgen Klopp’s January comments about United penalties in the back of his mind. The Liverpool manager famously said ‘Man Utd had more penalties in two years than me in five-and-a-half years,’ and many believe that this has influenced officials against United in subsequent games.

Horrifying statistics emerge after Man United's drab draw with Chelsea

Manchester United fans were right to be displeased following the disappointingly boring clash vs Chelsea which ended in a goalless draw.

Supporters weren’t just unhappy with the result or the missed opportunity to close the gap to Manchester City but also with how this type of performance was becoming a pattern this season.

United did not look like a team who wanted to get all three points and it could be argued their two best spells in the match came at the ends of either half.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a bigger issue to deal with, however, as his players have come up short pretty often against the bigger teams this campaign.

This pattern is probably what could’ve costed them putting in a proper title challenge and what allowed City to run away with the league.

These results are simply unforgivable as Manchester United scoring just one goal is pretty unacceptable all things considered.

Given how the team have scored more goals than anyone else in the league, it’s clear they have firepower in other matches.

Their performances this season will likely be enough to score a top-four finish but if they want to make that breakthrough to become a title-challenging team then these are the matches that shows the difference.

Unsung hero wins our man of the match - United player ratings vs Chelsea

Manchester United played out a toothless 0-0 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge this afternoon. Here are our player ratings for the game:

(A score of 6 is around average.)

David de Gea 6 – Had nothing difficult to do, but did nothing wrong for once.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 5 – Looked a bit tired and disinterested.

Victor Lindelof 7 – Made an excellent interception to prevent what would have been a certain Timo Werner near miss.

Harry Maguire 6 – Did nothing interesting of note. If only he could do that more often.

Luke Shaw 6 – Starting to go off the boil after his excellent recent run of form. Think the waistline is beginning to expand a little.

Scott McTominay 6 – Rushed back from injury, but why? Tries his best, but other than the odd brilliant game, he’s looking more and more like the next Darren Fletcher.

Fred 6 – Another hard worker in a team full of worker bees.

Dan James 6 – Another worker bee, this one’s a fast little bee, but spills all the honey and then does that face that says ‘oooh I was so close there getting that honey into the hive.’

Bruno Fernandes 5 – A poor game by Bruno’s standards. I know he says he isn’t getting tired, but what other reason could there be for that dismal showing?

Marcus Rashford 5 – Another tired-looking performance, produced nothing creative at all. Didn’t even do his ‘receive ball, run straight at goal, get tackled’ routine.

Mason Greenwood 6 – You felt sorry for Mason, the service was worse than the Paddington to Cardiff Central line.

Substitutes

Anthony Martial 5 – Did nothing much to report, but I’m knocking a point off the average of six for just looking so bored, surly and sulky when he came on.

Amad Diallo 9 – Insightful of Solskjaer to bring on the Ivorian with 30 minutes to go and was rewarded with the most brilliant hat-trick …. oh wait, no, I was just dreaming. He didn’t come on.

Edinson Cavani has made quite an impact since his deadline day arrival at Old Trafford, but how much do you know about our other South American players, past and present? Take our quiz below to find out!

This dreadful team selection pattern will cost Man United titles and trophies

Should how much money is spent or has been spent on a player determine whether he should be in the Manchester United starting line-up or not?

It is an assumption that has crept into the general discussion about who can and cannot be dropped, or sold, that bears further inspection.

The first case relates to the goalkeeping situation. There is constant debate about whether David de Gea or Dean Henderson should be United’s number one going forward and regardless of which side you fall on in terms of ability, an issue that keeps coming up is de Gea’s wages.

‘Perhaps Solskjaer is not yet ready to have the Premier League’s highest paid player sat on the bench – what could yet prove an insurmountable obstacle given that De Gea still has over two years to run on a £375,000 a week contract and, on those terms, would be practically impossible to offload,’ says The Telegraph’s James Ducker, in one of those typical analyses.

‘Maybe it is a battle Henderson – for all his talents – is simply unable to win because of that.’

In other words, nobody is daft enough to pay him what we are, and we can’t pay someone that much money to sit on the bench, even if he is making bad mistakes that are costing United points.

The second case relates to Harry Maguire. It is generally agreed that his centre back partnership with Victor Lindelof is not strong enough and that United need to sign a world class defender to complement Maguire’s style and compensate for his weaknesses. Again, regardless of where you stand on the debate of whether Maguire is better than Lindelof, or Eric Bailly, or even Axel Tuanzebe for that matter, it is generally accepted that because he is the world’s most expensive defender, he cannot be dropped no matter what.

The thing is this. Let’s say you were a general, defending your position against invading troops. You have two cannons and there’s only room for one. One you spent a fortune on, but it has the tendency to misfire and the pin keeps getting stuck. The other cost you next to nothing, it isn’t as flashy but it does the job and does it well. Which one would you choose?

It’s a no-brainer isn’t it? So why should it be any different in football?

What’s done is done. Maguire cost £80 million, it’s irrelevant now. De Gea will cost another £39 million until his contract expires, nothing can be done about that. But when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer comes to pick his side before every game, or when he comes to choosing who he buys in the next transfer window, if he has those things in mind when doing so, then he is not acting in Manchester United’s best footballing interests.

It is also debatable whether choosing players based on investment is even in the club’s best financial interests. On the surface of it, dropping De Gea or Maguire (if Solskjaer indeed wanted to) would be a public acknowledgement that they are not valuable assets. Their market values would go down, so United’s balance sheet would be affected. But what if their poor play costs United a place in the Champions League (around £15 million), or qualifying for the knockout stages (another £10m, approximately), or even reaching the final (approx. £15m more)?

An increase in one Premier League place at the end of the season is worth around £2 million. So if a bad defence costs United, say, 3 positions in the league, that’s £6 million right there.

Then there is the fan interest, merchandising sales, club membership and, once Covid is over, ticket sales. All are affected by how well the team is doing.

It is almost certainly true that no club will match the ridiculous salary that Ed Woodward quite inexplicably offered to De Gea in July 2018 that I wrote at the time would come back to bite United in the backside. But is that reason enough for him to keep his place ahead of Henderson?

Let’s say that in June, a team was willing to pay De Gea £100,000 a week and pay £5 million for him. United could buy out his contract for £39m – (£10.4m salary + £5m fee) = £22 million. Better than him sitting on the bench for two years and costing £39 million. But even that is better than playing him because he is costing £39 million when he is making costly mistakes.

As for Maguire, the situation is even simpler. There is really no value to protect. His contract runs until 2025, by which time he’ll be 32 years old. So resale value is not an issue. There is no reason whatsoever to keep him in the team just because he cost so much. That decision has to be made on merit.

Whether or not either player will keep their place on merit, going forward, remains to be seen. But we should stop bringing their transfer fees, wages and transfer values into that debate and into that decision.

Why clever Solskjaer has to rely on Mr Unreliable against Chelsea

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come in for a lot of criticism from fans for persistently selecting an off-form Anthony Martial this season. Questions have also been asked as to why United waited nine months to sign Edinson Cavani when he could have been added to the ranks in last January’s transfer window instead of Odion Ighalo.

However, there is a creeping realisation that one of the main reservations back then – Cavani’s injury record – was actually a very good reason to be wary and is becoming a problem as we cut into the meat of the 2020/21 season.

If we look at Cavani’s record over the last two years, there is only one instance where he goes two months without injury – October and November 2019. The other gaps in the record include the two off-seasons and the Covid-19 lockdown.

source: Transfermarkt.com

The Uruguayan has already had five separate injuries at United – plus the initial Covid-19 quarantine and an admittedly unfortunate three-match ban for his social media faux-pas – and is now on the treatment table again. He picked up a knock in training that Solskjaer seemed to think would be shaken off quickly, but which has seen him miss four games already – and he has yet to even resume training. It is looking likely that such an innocuous knock will result in at least six games being missed.

The 34-year-old’s propensity to pick up injuries might not have been such a problem had Martial continued his fine form of 2019/20. Most people assumed that the Frenchman would spearhead the United attack this season and that Cavani would be used rotationally and/or as an impact sub. But because of Martial’s poor performances, he has made himself the first choice centre-forward of the United side and now his absences are felt strongly because there is little by way of an alternative.

This is why Solskjaer has been doing right by continuing to push Martial to play through his bad patch and regain his form. The manager knows that he needs to be firing, because Cavani – or his body – simply won’t be able to take the strain of leading United’s line to the end of the season.

There are alternatives, of course. Marcus Rashford has plenty of experience as a centre forward but has proven to be a more effective weapon on the left wing. Mason Greenwood is a natural centre forward but is still a teenager, still perhaps physically not at a robust enough level for the role and has scant experience of playing up top at Premier League level. The next generation of youngsters – the likes of Joe Hugill and Charlie McNeill – are tremendously exciting but far from ready. The fact is that there is no backup.

A formation change could provide the answer. Rashford and Greenwood could play as twin strikers, but this would require a shift in formation to 3-5-2, with the full-backs providing the width. 4-4-2 would not work without Bruno Fernandes being pushed out to a wing or deeper into midfield, neither of which the boss is likely to want to do.

So, in all likelihood, Martial will lead the line today at Stamford Bridge and Solskjaer will just hope, again, that something in the Frenchman’s brain clicks and he starts to fire again. That is United’s best chance of resolving the problem and, presumably, the reason that the manager is selecting him so persistently despite his abject performances.

‘Anthony knows what we want, and he is working really hard to do well for the team and that’s what is pleasing me the most when I see him every day in training,’ Solskjaer said ahead of today’s game.

‘He is not going to sit down and wait for things to happen, he knows he will have to make it happen himself and we encourage him, we coach him, and we know he has going this quality and class.

‘Everyone goes through difficult patches from time to time and I think we saw again tonight, he is working hard and that is the main thing.’

Man United can employ brilliant weapon to win all three points vs Chelsea

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has a remarkable record vs Chelsea and it’s absolutely crucial he starts the fixture to keep it up.

The young Englishman has been one of the club’s best performers this season, notching up double digits in both goals and assists.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clearly feels Rashford is a key part of his team as well, with the player having played close to 3000 minutes across all competitions.

There are many who feel the academy graduate could even go a level higher despite his remarkable statistics so there’s certainly plenty to look forward to.

One aspect of Rashford’s game that many appreciate is his ability to step up in big matches and it seems he favours Chelsea plenty in that sense.

Rashford has often played as a left-winger for Manchester United this season but with Edinson Cavani out of the tie, he could lead the line.

Anthony Martial is another option but it wouldn’t be a complete surprise to see the former play as a striker while the latter as a winger.

Either way, it’s likely they will interchange positions as they so often do and that could be the key to ensure Rashford adds to his goals and assists tallies.

Man United youngster opens up on his future amid concerning rumours

Manchester United prospect James Garner has admitted he’s open-minded about his future as he continues to enjoy a successful loan spell with Nottingham Forrest.

The young midfielder is one of those expected to have a bright future and many fans see him as Michael Carrick‘s true heir.

Garner hasn’t enjoyed a proper breakthrough under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and instead has been spending his time on loan with Watford in the first half of the season and the aforementioned Nottingham Forrest in this second half.

Given United’s injury crisis in midfield with the likes of Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek and Scott McTominay all out, having the 19-year-old might’ve proven useful at this time.

Fred and Nemanja Matic are the last two natural senior midfielders left and should either one pick up a knock, it could spell trouble for Solskjaer.

Rumours have been floating around that Garner could leave permanently to secure first-team football more regularly, perhaps because his pathway into Manchester United’s senior team looks a little crowded.

However, those at Old Trafford still highly rate him and will surely want to hold onto him regardless of the rumours.

Garner’s current contract with United runs out in the summer of 2022 so there’s a decision to be made about him this summer.

United turn to bargain basement centre-back after giving up on top target - report

It’s looking increasingly likely that Manchester United are looking for a cut-price centre-back this summer as they appear to have cooled interest in what was another top target.

Having reportedly dropped their pursuit of RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano weeks before he signed an agreement to join Bayern Munich, they are now said to be backing away from their next favourite, Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, due to his asking price.

Kounde was widely touted to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s proposed addition to the centre-back roster, but with Sevilla reportedly unwilling to listen to offers, his €80 million (£69 million) release clause is considered too high a price to pay by the Red Devils.

As a result, a third favourite has now emerged in the form of Villareal’s Pau Torres. According to Eurosport, ‘Torres might yet emerge as a more realistic target at centre back. He is reported to have a release clause of around £43m which seems to be about the maximum we should expect United to spend on a defender.’

The Reds have been linked with the 24-year-old a number of times in the past and Solskjaer is reportedly keen to get a left-footer, but there is a big problem: United need a pacy centre-back to compensate for Harry Maguire’s lack of speed, and Torres is not it. In fact, in some ways, it could be argued that he is too similar to Maguire and/or Lindelof to provide the right blend.

Other names that are reportedly on the shortlist include RB Leipzig’s Ibrahima Konate, Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic and Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings.

Sancho or Haaland? Dortmund CEO admits transfer likely in candid interview

Manchester United seem to be finally getting the upper hand in their Jadon Sancho transfer pursuit, but the door to Erling Haaland is also opening wider.

Sancho was the Red Devils’ main target last summer but they failed to start negotiations before Borussia Dortmund’s deadline and were, in any case, never going to approach the €120 million that the Bundesliga club were demanding.

We reported here last week that United have now put their plans to sign the winger on hold as they are pleased with the progress of Mason Greenwood and Amad Diallo in that position.

And now, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke appears to be trying to lure them back in again by dangling a carrot about his club’s need to sell players.

‘The money that we are losing at the moment we will not be able to regain anytime soon,’ Watzke told Handelsblatt.

‘I reckon that it will take at least five years to reach the status quo before the corona crisis in terms of liabilities.

When asked specifically if the club would need to sell players to reduce their debt, Watzke admitted it might be possible.

‘In the midst of a pandemic, I am now ruling nothing out,’ he said.

‘But it is not necessarily the aim. The most important thing is the financial balance: that we have a strong team on the field and at the same time are economically stable.

‘If we’re going to play the entire next season without spectators, we must certainly think about giving up a player. Asking banks for credit lines just to avoid selling a player is not going to be our way.’

The comments could equally be applied to another United target, Erling Haaland. The Norwegian prodigy has a €75 million (£65m) release clause that comes into effect in June 2022. Dortmund know that their prize asset is worth much more than that – Transfermarkt’s value is €110 million (£95m) – so a question arises as to how much one extra season of Haaland’s goals are worth to Dortmund.

Watzke’s words suggest that the club may be prepared to sell him this summer if the right offer comes along and logically, anything in excess of that £95 million would surely be considered.

According to The Mail, ‘it has been claimed Sancho’s asking price now stands at £88m’, but in the current climate is would seem likely that United would be looking to pay significantly less than this, even though they were reportedly willing to pay around £90 last summer.

Watzke’s Handelsblatt interview is the clearest indication yet that one of the two players will be sold this summer. Whether it turns out to be Sancho or Haaland remains to be seen, and could also depend a lot on Manchester United and how much they are prepared to pay for each.

4-2-3-1: This fantastic United line-up will tear Chelsea apart

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is sweating over the fitness of key players ahead of tomorrow’s crunch Premier League clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Juan Mata, Paul Pogba, Hannibal Mejbri and Phil Jones are definitely ruled out and Dan James, Scott McTominay, Edinson Cavani and Donny van de Beek could join them.
It is a game where the manager will pick his strongest available eleven, so if Cavani and McTominay are fit, they will almost certainly start.
Despite the excellent form of Eric Bailly and Dean Henderson in the two legs against Real Sociedad, the boss seems to retain more faith in David de Gea and the Harry Maguire-Victor Lindelof centre-back partnership, so we expect them to be reunited for the trip to London.
There is a possibility that Solskjaer will go with three at the back and include Bailly as well. This was a common tactic last season in big away games, but he has only employed it twice this term – against PSG and RB Leipzig – with the latter potentially having deterred him from ever trying it again. So on balance we think he’ll stick with 4-2-3-1.
Mason Greenwood should get the nod ahead of Anthony Martial as the fourth attacker alongside Cavani, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes. If Cavani doesn’t recover in time, Anthony Martial’s form has been so bad that he will probably not replace him. Other options are to push either Rashford or Greenwood up top and bring in Dan James (if he himself has recovered) or Amad on the left or right wing, or to go with that three at the back discussed above, with Rashford and Greenwood as twin strikers and Shaw and Wan-Bissaka providing the width.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted XI for the game:

Poll: Over three quarters of fans believe this man should be United's number 1

More than three quarters of Manchester United fans believe that Dean Henderson should be the team’s first choice Premier League goalkeeper for the rest of this season, according to an online poll.

Followers of The Peoples Person Facebook page were asked to choose between the two stoppers and around 2,000 votes were received.

At the time of writing, over 1,600 fans (76%) had voted for Henderson and only 505 (24%) had voted for De Gea.

Comments in favour of Henderson included:

‘Henderson is our future and he needs to be our No1. De Gea has lost his edge and he is static and makes too many mistakes. Sell him while he still has value.’

‘His record lately has been better than De Gea so why not give him a run in the team see what he’s made of? As for the guys saying it’s only against lesser teams, that isn’t his fault, he can only play against the teams he has been selected against.’

‘I think Henderson should at least be given a run of games based on his form. It’s only fair. I’m not saying replace De Gea forever, just see if Henderson can maintain his form over 3-4 consecutive games.’

‘De Gea is a bottle job, too scared to get out and command his area like you saw at Everton against Calvert Lewin – cost us 2 points. Henderson is a better all round keeper and will keep on improving.’

‘Henderson is the future, hence if we have the option to keep only one of them, that should be Henderson. Also not to forget how De Gea almost left for Madrid. We should cash in and Deano should be our no.1 from next season. De Gea aint getting any better.’

‘Time for Henderson to get more game time. De Gea has been brilliant but … teams evolve and Henderson has done enough to be given a run of games.’

‘We should … give Henderson the rest of the season in the league to prove himself, with games against City, Chelsea and other top teams coming up we could get an indication of what he’s capable of.’

Comments in favour of De Gea included:

‘One hand of De Gea is better than two hands of all English goalkeepers alive.’

‘De Gea all the way. That lad is one of the top keepers in the league.’

‘For how many seasons has David carried United on his back single handedly? Don’t compare David with Henderson.’

‘De Gea has had a wobble in the last two years but I think this season he has been really good and he saved us from losing against West Brom.’

Four out, four doubtful: Solskjaer reports major injury crisis ahead of crunch Chelsea tie

Juan Mata, Paul Pogba, Hannibal Mejbri and Phil Jones are definitely ruled out of Manchester United’s crunch away Premier League tie against Chelsea on Sunday, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and four others are doubtful.

Speaking at the press conference after last night’s Real Sociedad game, the manager said:

‘Juan will unfortunately be out for a couple of weeks, so he missed tonight.
‘We hope that [Scott, Donny and Edinson] can be available for the weekend but I’m not sure. Paul is still out for a few weeks, unfortunately.’
The boss also confirmed that Daniel James needs assessing after coming off in last night’s game.
Eric Bailly gave Solskjaer good reasons to keep him in the side for the Chelsea game after another commanding performance that won him a place in the Europa League Team of the Week for the second time in a row.
‘Both of them [Bailly and Lindelof] played really well,’ the manager said when asked who would partner Harry Maguire going forward.
‘We’ve got Eric, Victor and Harry, three very good centre-backs that I can rely on and Axel as well, so I’ve got four to choose from.
‘Axel played in midfield this evening but sometimes it’s the opposition and sometimes it’s the form. I think the two of them will keep on playing, maybe playing together as well.’
Solskjaer also had words of encouragement for under-fire Anthony Martial, who put in another drab performance last night and who has now scored in only one of 14 games since New Year’s day.

‘Anthony knows what we want, and he is working really hard to do well for the team and that’s what is pleasing me the most when I see him every day in training.

‘He knows he will have to make it happen himself and we encourage him, we coach him, and we know he has going this quality and class.

‘Everyone goes through difficult patches from time to time and I think we saw again tonight, he is working hard and that is the main thing.’

'A departure could follow': time running out for Solskjaer to make key change - report

A seventh clean sheet in his 12th start for Manchester United last night gave goalkeeper Dean Henderson yet another reason for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to give him a regular spot in the starting line-up.

‘Solskjaer has repeatedly shown fidelity to a goalkeeper who has a wealth of credit but now appears more fragile than a record of five PFA team of the year nominations would suggest,’ says The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell of first choice stopper, David de Gea.

‘The question lingers about the circumstances required for Henderson to get a sustained run.’

There are few if any better instinctive shot-stoppers in the world than De Gea and those spectacular saves are what get goalkeepers noticed. But when comparing De Gea and Henderson, that is perhaps the only area in which the Spaniard is superior.

(1) Consistency

Consistency is arguably the most important attribute of all for a goalkeeper. It is a position where a mistake leads to conceding a goal more than any other. In this area Henderson is way ahead of De Gea. Since the 2017/18 season, the Spaniard has made nine direct errors leading to an opposition goal, against Henderson’s two.

One of those two for the England man unfortunately came in one of his three Premier League games for United, against his former club, Sheffield United, but that came from trying to control a badly-judged backpass from Harry Maguire early in the game. However, it could be that the error left Solskjaer a little concerned as to whether he was replacing one error-prone keeper for another and Henderson has not played in the Premier League since.

It is not just about that ‘errors leading to goals’ statistic when it comes to consistency, either. De Gea has made several dubious contributions, including failures to claim the ball, weakness in the challenge and errors that did not lead to goal.

‘Solskjaer is quick to highlight De Gea’s impressive interventions, such as the double save to Mbaye Diagne at West Bromwich Albion… But familiar issues are persistent in De Gea,’ Whitwell notes.

(2) Command of the area

De Gea is and always has been very much a goal-line keeper and in truth, even at his peak, command of the box was always lacking to some extent. But that recently seems to have gone from bad to worse.

‘In that same game at the Hawthorns De Gea declined to come for Conor Gallagher’s cross that finished on Diagne’s head inside the six-yard box,’ says Whitwell.

‘For the visit of Everton De Gea melted to a challenge with Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Against Sheffield United De Gea was nudged off the ball for Kean Bryan’s goal in a way that may have been a foul but also betrayed the Spaniard’s supine approach to the rougher side of goalkeeping.’

Henderson, on the other hand, is not afraid to come off his line. In the dying minutes of yesterday’s match, a commanding leap to pluck the ball from around the penalty spot seemed a simple and yet effective breath of fresh air in the United defence.

(3) Motivating and organising

This is huge tick in favour of Henderson. Empty stadiums allow the cameras to pick up a lot of the players’ interactions and the Whitehaven man is one of the most vocal around. If memory serves correctly, nobody has ever reported overhearing De Gea shouting anything, but it is a constant theme with Henderson.

‘ Come on boys, we f—ing go, let’s f—ing go,’ he was overhead shouting at the start of last night’s game.

‘Come on Shola, express yourself!,’ he was heard yelling to United’s 17-year-old substitute.

‘Win this header,’ he bellowed at Axel Tuanzebe.

‘Early on in Thursday night’s return leg Henderson diffused a tense situation as the ball dropped behind Alex Telles by screaming to claim, and the rest of the match was marked by his vocal instructions,’ Whitwell summarises.

(4) Penalty situations

Few penalties get past Henderson, whilst few do not get past De Gea. It was in the 2015/16 season that the Spaniard last saved a penalty – although he will judge himself unlucky in the opening game this term when he did save from Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew, only for the VAR to rule that he had moved off his line.

Henderson has saved eight in that same period and whilst last night’s embarrassing miss by Oyarzabal was not a save, as Whitwell notes, ‘some credit should be afforded to Henderson for halting his dive as Oyarzabal shuffled. It seemed to perturb a player who had scored all 18 of his previous penalties.’

(5) Shot stopping

Even though this is De Gea’s forte as noted above, the Englishman’s statistics this season are better than the Spaniard’s. Henderson has a 78.6 percent save ratio and has conceded 0.14 goals over the expected, compared to 61.8 percent for De Gea and 2.40 over expectancy.

Rumours coming out of Old Trafford are that Henderson will not wait around again next season as De Gea’s understudy and will ask to leave if not given a fair crack of the whip in the Premier League. ‘There are people at Carrington who believe … a departure could follow,’ Whitwell reveals. ‘At least one Premier League club is actively monitoring developments.’

It could be a case of now or never for Solskjaer to give the 23-year-old the run in the side he so craves and the opportunity to prove that he is the future of Manchester United in the goalkeeping department.

Four out of four take-ons: Man United man steps up vs Real Sociedad

Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has stepped up for his team at the right time with his solid performance vs Real Sociedad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are facing an injury crisis in their engine room with the likes of Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba all doubts for the club’s next fixture vs Chelsea.

Matic is one of United’s most experienced players but is still often someone who the legendary Norwegian trusts in difficult moments.

The Serbian midfielder has had to wait for his time to get consistent starts but seems to have grasped the opportunities with both hands.

Matic hasn’t set the world on fire but what he has done is show he’s a reliable figure and if he can put in more similar performances then there’s no doubt he still has a future at the club.

His statistics are varied and it’s arguably what made his performance so impressive as he wasn’t afraid to play long balls forward but still maintained a good passing accuracy.

He proved he can successfully take on his opponents and yet win the ball back superbly with his seven recoveries and two interceptions.

With question marks still remaining over his teammates’ heads in terms of their fitness, Matic has come to the starting XI at the right time.

100% aerial duels won and six recoveries: Man United man shuts out Real Sociedad

Manchester United star Eric Bailly returned to the starting XI vs Real Sociedad and it’s safe to say he reminded fans, once again, why he should start more often.

The Ivorian defender is clearly a top player but question marks over his fitness has forced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to not play him as often as he likes.

Many supporters feel Harry Maguire and Bailly are the club’s best centre-back partnership but unfortunately it isn’t one they’ve seen too often.

Against Real Sociedad, the former Villareal man played alongside Victor Lindelof as the towering Englishman was given a rare night off.

Bailly played well, keeping a clean-sheet and showing he’s a good partner regardless of who he’s playing alongside.

100% take-ons and 100% aerial duels won is the single most perfect way to sum up the type of player Bailly is.

Unpredictable yet solid, the 26-year-old just have to prove his fitness over a long enough period to completely win over his manager.

Unfortunately, Bailly is running out of time as it’s believed the club have prioritised the centre-back position for the summer.

He’ll have to do something remarkable between now and the next transfer window to ensure he can salvage his career, otherwise, he’ll either be sold or just used as a squad player.

Solskjaer reacts to Shoretire performance, reveals expectations for the season

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is certainly pleased with Shola Shoretire and spent plenty of time praising him following his European debut.

The academy product broke a nearly 40-year-old record to become the youngest player ever to feature in European competition when he was brought on vs Real Sociedad.

United’s own Norman Whiteside was the one who held the record and fans are hoping it’s a sign of the better things to come.

Shoretire is highly rated by those at Old Trafford and supporters even wanted to see him play the whole 90 minutes.

However, Solskjaer has opted to protect the young winger as much as possible and it’s a decision that should bring long-term benefits.

It’s certainly a lot of positives for Shoretire and fans will be watching his career develop closely.

He’s known to be a winger and so his competitors are the likes of Juan Mata, Mason Greenwood, Daniel James, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Amad.

It’s safe to say the right-wing position is up for grabs so if he can string together a bunch of good performances, there’s no reason why he won’t get to hold onto that role.

For now though, it seems likely fans will get to see plenty of him from the bench instead.

Solskjaer provides insight into which key Man United men will be fit for Chelsea

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has cleared up who may or may not be available for the upcoming clash vs Chelsea.

The legendary Norwegian was speaking following the drab 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad and so fans were hoping for some positive news.

United are currently battling with a bit of an injury crisis at central midfield with the likes of Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek all facing their own issues.

Solskjaer opted to play a midfield partnership of Fred and Nemanja Matic vs the Spanish side and the former was even substituted for Axel Tuanzebe, such was the desperation.

The Red Devils will need as many first-team stars as possible fit for their crucial match against the Blues this weekend.

Fred and Matic are a solid enough partnership to hold their own vs Chelsea but the concern is going forward as it is often too defensive of a double pivot to be of any offensive use.

This means the pressure will be on Manchester United’s attackers to hold up the ball well and be creative outlets at the same time.

That has been a struggle at times this season so hopefully either the players aforementioned are available or Solskjaer can get Fred or Matic to be more penetrative than usual.

Two brilliant performances and two dreadful ones: United player ratings vs Sociedad

Manchester United battled out a 0-0 draw against Real Sociedad in the Europa at Old Trafford this evening to progress to the Round of 16 of the competition 4-0 on aggregate. Here are our player ratings for the game:

(A score of 6 is around average.)

Dean Henderson 7 – A seventh clean sheet of the season for Henderson and some authoratitive shouting and catching. Looking like a safe pair of hands at the back and a good vocal presence.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Should have been rested from the start, looked tired.

Eric Bailly 8 – Another majestic performance from the Ivorian. Hands down United’s best centre back if he can stay fit.

Victor Lindelof 5 – A clean sheet yes, but didn’t look terribly safe and cost Tuanzebe his goal with his mid-air foul.

Alex Telles 7 – Another good performance from Telles. Defended well and put in some good crosses. Would just like to see him take a few more chances going forward as he used to do for Porto.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Steady Eddie performance from Mr Reliable.

Fred 6 – Looked to be enjoying a bit of freedom to get forward but then got involved in niggly fouls and had to be subbed to save a sending off.

Mason Greenwood 7 – Some nice moves and nearly scored a classy goal, but it wasn’t to be.

Bruno Fernandes 7 – Was so unlucky when he hit the bar and played well for the time he was on.

Dan James 4 – Conceded a ridiculous penalty early on that, if converted, could have made life difficult. Did bring out a good save from the Sociedad keeper, but otherwise offered little.

Anthony Martial 3 – 90 more minutes without a goal and absolutely lacking any form and confidence. Solskjaer’s determination to play him through his bad patch doesn’t seem to be working and he should really be given a few weeks away from the side to regroup.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford 7 – Did well, put in some great passes and crosses, but why was he risked with the tie won?

Axel Tuanzebe 8 – Played really well in an unfamiliar role and was very unlucky to have his brilliant headed thunderbolt ruled out for a foul by Lindelof. Hope to see more of him on the back of this.

Brandon Williams 7 – Was also impressive after a slightly shaky start. Had the energy to close down anything coming down the right and looked good going forward.

Amad Diallo 6 – Didn’t get much chance to express himself but showed a couple of nice touches and helped out defensively.

Shola Shoretire 6 – Didn’t get on the ball much.

Edinson Cavani has made quite an impact since his deadline day arrival at Old Trafford, but how much do you know about our other South American players, past and present? Take our quiz below to find out!
