Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo could be about to leave the club in this transfer window.
The 30-year-old has had countless injury problems over recent years and has not played a game for the first team this season.
A loan move to his home club in Argentina, Estudiantes, did not work out as planned last January as he only played one game before lockdown.
Both club and player were desperate to extend the loan into this season but United refused, as they wanted to sell Rojo before his contract expires in June.
But now another Argentinian side, the country’s most successful club and current league leaders, Boca Juniors, have opened talks to sign the centre-back.
‘The bomb exploded this Monday afternoon when social networks were flooded with information that broke all the metrics: Marcos Rojo‘s environment confirmed that there had already been contact,’ reports Argentinian outlet Olé.
‘His experience at Manchester United and in Europe (he was also at Spartak Moscow and Sporting Lisbon), added to the fact that he played two World Cups and three Copa Americas with the National Team, make him a difficult name to ignore’.
‘Rojo himself has acknowledged that [Boca’s director of football Juan Román] Riquelme had communicated with him before he closed the negotiations with Estudiantes.
‘Marcos is a faithful admirer of Riquelme and even on his social networks he was seen with the blue and yellow shirt and the number 10 on the back with the name of Román.
‘And what’s more, Riquelme talks with him frequently, they speak quite regularly.’
The question, the outlet admits, is whether Rojo will be able to join Boca this month. They hint that the English media may be misguided in their claims that Rojo would prefer to stay in England, where he has been linked with Newcastle and Sheffield United. It is certainly well-reported that he put all the pressure he could on the Red Devils to allow him to stay at Estudiantes in June, where he felt settled with his wife Eugenia Lusardo and three daughters.
The ball is clearly in United’s court. The club will try to get some cash for the player in this window but it could be that he will be allowed to leave for Argentina at the 11th hour if they are unable to clinch a paying deal elsewhere.
