Inter Milan have expressed a keen desire to sign Matteo Darmian over the summer transfer window, according to reports from Italy.
The defender appeared destined to join Juventus last year, stating in the summer a desire to return to Italy – a move which has for some time felt inevitable.
He has only made five appearances in all competitions this season and his last start – the only one received under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – came against Reading at the start of January.
And according to Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato, Inter have been underwhelmed by full-back Cedric Soares, who moved to the San Siro on loan in January, and view Darmian as an ideal replacement in the summer transfer window.
The full-back, who joined Man United in 2015, has existed on the periphery of proceedings for most of his Old Trafford career. And it is telling that, while new contracts have been handed to the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling and Scott McTominay, United have so far decided against renewing Darmian’s deal.
Should the club decide against extending Darmian’s contract, he would be able to join Inter for free, and provide United with further reason to invest in the full-back position.
