Scholes explains what United must do to beat Liverpool on Sunday

Paul Scholes believes Man United can win the title this season, but they must overcome their fear of playing against elite opposition.

Last season, United’s record against other top six sides was impressive, winning seven out of 10 Premier League ties, but the side dropped too many points against lower-ranked opposition. So far this term, the situation is reversed, with United having failed to register a single win so far against top six opponents in five attempts – four of which came at Old Trafford.

4/10 Spurs (H) 1-6
24/10 Chelsea (H) 0-0
1/11 Arsenal (H) 0-1
12/12 Man City (H) 0-0
26/12 Leicester (A) 2-2

‘It feels strange to say it, but I actually do think United can win the league because it’s been such a weird season,’ Scholes told ESPN.
‘But it’s all about winning the big games now. They haven’t done that yet.
‘People can say they won at Leicester on the final day of last season to qualify for the Champions League, but that wasn’t a big game like going to City, Liverpool or Chelsea and winning when it matters.
‘United have lost four successive semi-finals and were knocked out the Champions League with a really bad defeat against RB Leipzig.
‘That failure to win big games has to change if they are to win anything, but there’s no better place to start than at Anfield. United will never have a better chance to win at Anfield.
‘United have the players to go and win at Anfield, but this is the moment when they have to show they can deliver in the biggest games. They haven’t beaten any of the so-called Big Six this season and they won’t win anything until they do.’
Scholes believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have the ability to win the big games but need to have more belief and the ability to raise their game.
‘Psychologically, United just seem to lack belief on the big occasion, but they are also coming up against better players, so it’s much harder to beat those teams if you don’t have everybody performing to the top of their game,’ he said.
‘But when you do win against your rivals, especially away from home, it is massive for confidence — yours and theirs. When we used to go and win at Arsenal, we knew it would be a dagger to the heart to win at their place.’
‘They have some tough games to come at Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal, but it is their away form that has put them top of the table.
‘If they can win those games, they will have answered the question about winning when it matters. And they’ll go a lot closer to winning the title by doing that.’
