The performance overall offered encouraging signs, despite the defeat – Arsenal were better throughout, but a late capitulation and defeat will offer scant consolation.
Goalkeeper Bernd Leno suffered a nasty looking knee injury to compound a miserable week to the league restart for Arsenal. Fans will hope the German is back before long, but tensions bubbled when match-winner Neal Maupay clashed with the stopper, ending his day.
Nicolas Pepe who was pretty irrelevant throughout, came to life with an absolute perler in the 68th minute, opening the scoring and seemingly setting the Gunners on their way to a first win of the Premier League restart.
However, Brighton equalised not long after, a ricocheted ball ended up going in by Seagulls captain Lewis Dunk on the 75th minute.
Then in the 95th minute, Neal Maupay scored the winner, with all but the last kick of the game, leaving Arsenal in 9th on 40 points. The Gunners could fall into the bottom half should results for Burnley and Crystal Palace go against them.
Mattéo Guendouzi could face retrospective action from match officials for confronting match-winner Neal Maupay, which likely stemmed from the initial clash that injured goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Arsenal are back on the south-coast next Thursday with a trip to St Mary’s Stadium to play Southampton.
