Arsenal have announced the signing of Flamengo defender Pablo Mari on a loan deal for the remainder of the season with an option to buy in the summer (via Arsenal.com).
It’s taken a while but Arsenal have officially made their first signing of the January transfer window.
There was always a feeling that Mikel Arteta wanted to improve on his squad of players and finally, we have the confirmation that this has happened.
Arsenal have finalised a deal to sign Pablo Mari, the 26-year-old defender from Flamengo on a loan deal for the remainder of the season.
The deal can be made permanent in the summer if Arsenal wish with a reported price tag of around £4.2 million touted for the defender.
Earlier in the week, David Ornstein claimed that it was Arteta’s preference to sign a left-footed centre back and the Spaniard has got his wish.
Mari is Spanish by birth and spent a few years as a Manchester City player but his time was largely spent on loan at various clubs.
“Pablo is an experienced player who will provide us with additional defensive quality,” said Arsenal’s technical director Edu of the deal.

“We have been monitoring Pablo’s career for a while and we are very pleased to have reached agreement with Flamengo for him to join us initially until the end of our season. Together with Mikel and his coaching team, we are all looking forward to seeing Pablo in an Arsenal shirt.”
It’s an interesting deal. Pablo Mari is highly thought of in Brazil and could represent a good piece of business for Arsenal. The 26-year-old is a talented player and the Gunners have the benefit of an effective trial period with this loan deal. Let’s hope it works out for the best.
